thank you for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> talking about california's vaccine rollout, people across the state 50 and older are eligible. there's a potential big catch. health leaders warn in most cases there's already a long line of people waiting to roll up their sleeves because supply is not meeting demand. if you haven't started hunting yet, get going if you want to get that vaccine. >> appointments are already limited and there will no doubt be a surge in the number of people scrambling to sign up. >> but doing some really smart research right now as you start your day may put you closer to the head of the line. take a look at your screen for a moment. consumer investigator chris chmura is showing us how to use some online tools to book your shot. >> reporter: this is the third time we've made a how to get a covid vaccine video because so

much is changing so fast. since the floodgates are basically open now we're going to run you through some of the official and unofficial places you can use to hunt down where and when vaccine appointments are available. your best bet might be researching both, maximize your chances of getting a slot. begin at vaccinefinder.org. it spots availabilities by zip code and radius. green dots are place that is have open appointments. you can trust it. it's an official project of boston children's hospital supported by the cdc. california's official website is myturn.ca.gov. if it doesn't have open appointments, check with your local public health department. if you're a member of a big health plan, check to s if it has open appointments. pharmacies like safeway, walgreens and cvs are offering vaccine appointments, too. you can book directly with them online. some folks online say batches of new open appointments are posted each night at midnight. we asked cvs about that.

new appointments open at various times of the day. we watched over a few hours. the system seemed to update about every 30 minutes. midnight came and went with no big change. but then we saw a spike around 1:00 a.m. the number of cvs locations with open slots statewide shot from just 15 to 149. then a steady morning drop-off. they were almost all gone by 10:00 a.m. some unofficial websites like vaxxmax.com and vaccinespotter.org might help you do the leg work. they combine availability data into lists or maps that are simple to use. you don't even have to register. you can just search. what about doses left over at smaller clinics and pharmacies? my colleague, scott budman, reported that the website dr.b created a clever, unofficial standby list. clinics are encouraged to report extra vaccines to them. then if you sign up dr.b will

send you a time-sensitive alert to snag a surplus shot. if you enroll at hidrb.com. we recommend you read the privacy policy at the bottom of the website. so that's how to get a covid-19 vaccine part three. if, when everything changes again and we have to make part four, we'll have it for you right here. well, this morning as you book your appointments for yourself or your loved ones, we have you covered. our team is fanned out on computers across the bay area all online testing the system to let you know maybe you can score an appointment right now. we'll be checking in with them all morning long. to cierra johnson. you have to be pretty patient and be constant, it seems like, cierra. >> reporter: you have to bring a little patience with that eligibility pool opening up to

potentially millions more folks in the state. i'm doing this as a hypothetical situation. i am not in the eligible category just yet, but information as if i am and i'm focusing -- >> okay, well, it looks like we lost cierra there. we'll check in with her a little bit later. by now contra costa county is used to the crush of a big demand. they widened access to the covid vaccination to anyone over 16. county leaders say 50,000 people under 50 have registered since tuesday and that's more than 1,500 requests an hour. they're urging anyone who is eligible to sign up on the county health website. the phone lines for appointments are swamped but they say everyone will get their appointments within the next few

weeks. a look at how many people are vaccinated by county. 58% of the people living in marin have had at least one shot. santa clara is only at 36%. now if you need some help or information with the vaccine you can head over to our website, nbcbayarea.com, click on how to get a vaccine appointment at the top of the page. developing right now, we are hoping to learn more later this morning about the shooting at a southern california office complex yesterday that killed four people. authorities say one of the dead was just a child. another person injured. it happened in the city of orange, not too far from disneyland. authorities say the suspect is in custody and was also injured by gunfire. it's not clear if the gunman knew the victims. new details as well in the brutal attack of an asian woman in new york city. the attacker caught on camera kicking the woman in the stomach

knocking her to the ground and repeatedly stomping her on the face. it was tough to watch. police say the suspect, brandon 2019. he murdered his mother in 2002. >> wow. rallies and vigils continue across the bay area calling for unity against asian-americans and pacific island violence. teenagers in alameda organized a candlelight vigil last night. several dozen people pledged solidarity. >> the community needs to hem protect and defend us, and we as asian-americans have to step out of the shadows. >> a group of executives are ta. several signed on to a letter published in "the wall street journal" pledging to raise $10 million. a live look at oakland

coliseum, and baseball fans have been waiting more than a year for this moment. it is opening day with real live fans. back in the stands are the people waiting to see the game live and in person. for the first time since 2019. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live for us. kris, this already has really been making opening day like no other. people are just so excited. >> reporter: right. it's going to be an experience like no other opening day for sure, but what it will lack in the general traditions of opening days of the past we will make up for in the excitement we get to be here at all. now as you mentioned it's been more than a season since fans were in the stands. you saw the cardboard cutouts up in the seat. while players were playing here that was the only in-person encouragement for the players. with alameda county in the orange tier and distancing

requirements the coliseum can now open up at 26% fans in seats. masks and social distance will be required, concessions will be cashless, and mobile delivered right to fans in their seats. no tailgating will be allowed in this parking lot or any of them. a 9-year-old nicholas family will be here. over the last year the family battled covid. the grown-ups worked essential jobs while the kids took on distance learning. watching the a's from home was a bright spot, but the family says they can't wait to watch in person. >> i think this is going to be a new normal but it is night to get back just some part of what we had before the pandemic hit. let's hope for a win on thursday and hope for a great season and we make the playoffs again. >> reporter: that little guy nicholas only 9 years old. for most of us one year without

near record breaking temperatures. and we have possible chances of rain moving in. i'll have the full forecast in just a few minutes. mike? we're looking at an easy drive right now. the bay bridge toll plaza. come off the overcrossing and may be blocking one lane. we'll check chp. so far they've had nothing to say. we'll follow this as the commute builds. a very happy thursday to you as well. today was the day that united airlines employees were to learn about furloughs. they can go to work this morning not worrying about them at all. the notices that united had given the california state government that it might cut workers starting today called warn notices are now irrelevant because the federal government stimulus action helped save airlines. no fooling on this day. american airlines says it will bringre fleet

by late spring just checking that airline's website sjc, rou had been cut during the pandemic. the tsa says more than a million people checked through security each day, most days in march. google says it will start letting employees return to work if they want starting in aim, though it'll be purely voluntary. we've seen several companies say their future is entirely home. others like google say it will be a mix, but no question the future of america's offices has changed. security company cloudflare looking to sublease an entire building on south and market. apple will no longer make siri's voice default to a woman's voice. you've long been able to choose the gender for siri, but if you did nothing, it was a female choice. check crunch says it will be effective the next update for ios and two new voices to choose

to the altamont. earlier crashes on 580 in the eastbound direction. the same thing for 84 as you're making that cutthrough avoiding the dublin interchange. volume is building there and through the maze no problems. there is still that disabled big rig at the bay ridge toll plaza. i'm tracking that. the golden gate bridge looks fine. vianey, i could have used cool fog. what do we have today? >> another warm day. unless you're around the coastline, you're definitely going to notice how hot it's going to get in the interior valleys. san jose a beautiful start to our morning. it's not sunny yet but it will be. clear skies in walnut creek as well. let's take a look at the current temperatures and i want to show you the 24-hour temperature change. san jose in the 50s. san francisco at about 60 degrees. but it's slightly cooler, and a lot cooler around the coast in some spots, including half moon bay. we're about 20 degrees cooler.

now as we head into the next couple of days, that ridge of high pressure that brought all of this heat is going to start to move east, and we're going to start to notice an onshore flow. tonight we'll notice some cloud cover. milpitas, 85. in through the interior valleys. oakland, 85 in concord. if you're going to be heading to san francisco, something to note. yesterday san francisco hit a record of 81 degrees. the previous record was 80 degrees set back in 2011. santa rosa, 83 degrees. how are we looking today compared to our record highs? santa rosa predicted high of 83. the record is 84. a good possibility we might hit concord expected to see record highs. and san francisco might miss it by a few degrees but we'll have to wait and see as we head into the evening. inland temperatures will start to drop into friday, saturday and sunday and, yes, we do see a chance of rain into the start of the next workweek. back to you.

welcome back. developing in minneapolis, this is the fourth day of former police officer derek chauvin's murder trial getting set to begin shortly. in court yesterday prosecutors showed video of george floyd moments before officers arrived. one of the first people to notice the interaction between floyd and police broke down and became emotional on the witness stand. >> when he kept saying i can't breathe and when he said, mama, you're killing me, you're killing me. that's what i kept hearing. >> another witness, the store

cashier, told jurors floyd seemed high during the brief conversation. he says that he's the one who actually identified floyd's $20 bill as likely counterfeit. that's what led to the manager to call police. new details investigators have determined what caused tiger woods' suv to crash in february, but so far they're keeping quiet about it. l.a. county sheriff says there are privacy concerns and permission will be needed first from tiger woods in order to release information about that crash. woods broke his leg suffering serious injuries. he's now recovering in florida. well, coming up next, rolling up the sleeves. governor newsom now at the front of the line for a vaccine shot. we're going to tell you which vaccine he's receiving and why he's not the only one checking his calendar. plus, are you worried about those dangerous side shows in your neighborhood? one city about to take aggressive new action including a big crackdown and more dedicated officers.

"today in the bay's" sharon katsuda joins us live and, sharon, a lot of it depends on which county you live in and, of course, that supply. >> reporter: that's really true, laura and marcus. right now taking a look at the contra costa health services website. it looks like it's up, but i have to tell from you personal experience the past two days when they opened it up to 60 and up eligibility, i tried to book appointments for my husband and my daughter and it was very difficult. it took hours to set up the appointment. now that it has opened up eligibility statewide to 50 and up the backlog in all counties is expected to increase. it refers you to your health care provider site to book an appointment. i tried kaiser and the page at 4:00 a.m. kept crashing, it wouldn't even pull up the page. county health experts say be patient. >> unfortunately, the supply and

season getting under way. >> reporter: it is opening day for the oakland a's but the coliseum is still a mass vaccination site and the arrival of fans not going to change that. the parking lots in the north is where those vaccination appointments will be received. one of the first 7,500 doses a day that is supposed to come to an end mid month. heavyweights dianne feinstein and alex padilla could convince fema to keep it open. vaccine eligibility expands. there is talk of alameda county taking over. the single dose johnson &

followed. santa clara's great america will reopen may 22nd. season pass are for 2020 and the previously purchased park admission tickets are now good through september. >> the giant dip earp today. for the first time the boardwalk are reopening and that includes a classic roller coaster, the wooden one. vta will start collecting fares again today. they were suspended earlier on buses, light rail and transit. limited capacity, social distancing and mask requirements will still be in place. >> happening today what may be the most critical sierra snow survey of the year. the numbers no doubt will be underwhelming but how much? vianey arana with a closer look at the numbers.

so much of the state experiencing drought like conditions. laura, i think when people think about the sierra snowpack one of the first initial questions, how does that affect us across the state? sierra snowpack does make up our water supply, it flows from the streams into our reservoirs. currently right now 60% of statewide average. we had a dry winter. any chance of rain we see coming up or snow is always a good sign. in the north we're at 6 %. in the south about 42%. hopefully a chance of rain. your weekend forecast for south lake tahoe, saturday and sunday into those 60s. the more rain we get.

you do see the san mateo bridge, taillights westbound. all the way across all three lanes. be careful, folks. try to use your signal and let folks know what you're doing. we'll let you know what the commute is doing coming up. the weekly jobless claims, first-time claims were higher than expected with 719,000 americans applying for unemployment. that's also up 61,000 from the week prior. another 3.8 million americans filed continuing claims. vice president kamala harris will be in oakland next monday. she is focusing on water infrastructure and small business relief. no word yet where exactly the events will be held. the oakland visit will be at the tail end of her trip here to california. vice president harris and her husband are flying to l.a. today. she'll stay there through easter sunday. as for those jobs president biden says there will be a lot of them. >> he's publishing for a new

infrastructure bill. the white house won't say how many jobs but we do know big government spending does create jobs. we saw it following the great recession, we saw it again in the '50s, during the great new deal, pushing for thousands to fix the infrastructure saying now is the time. >> we have to move now. i'm convinced if we act now in 50 years people will look back and say this was the moment america won the future. >> biden he's infrastructure plan would fix, for instance, 10,000 bridges in america. we've done many reports on the interstate 35 bridge in minneapolis in 2007. 13 people died. a surprising amount of money isn't for bridges or roads at all but things like home care of our elderly. mr. biden considers that part of

our american infrastructure, taking care of mom and dad at home instead of sending them away. now the president says he plans to pay for all of this with a tax hike on america's corporations. not as high as it was before the trump tax cuts but higher than now. some say that will be passed on to you in the form of higher prices. biden's first full cabinet meeting. top on the agenda today is covid-19. major corporations based in georgia are speaking out this morning against georgia's new voting law a week after it was signed. the law is supposed to make voting more secure. this is file video of georgia's governor who assured there had been no voting irregularity, not in the presidential election, not in the two senate elections. now corporations based in

georgia are speaking out now. critics point out they're speaking out now that it's too late to stop the law. black rock porsche, u.p.s., home depot on the list. delta airlines based in atlanta issued this statement. the bill includes provision that is will make it harder for many underrepresented voters, particularly black voters, to exercise their right to elect their representatives. that's wrong. coca-cola, atlanta's best-known company, says we oppose measures that would seek or diminish or restrict voter access and advocate for broad access, voter convenience, election integrity and political neutrality. on twitter this morning i posted the list of 47 states proposing voter restrictions. we're talking about it there. i'm @scottmcgrew. the embattled vice president of the san francisco school board now taking legal action to retain her control. so supporters last night rallied for alison collins who renewed

the suit seeking $27 million in damages. she claims that the board retaliated and violated her free speech rights. they stripped her of her position removing her from all committees. she argues she posted tweets when she was not yet in public office but only as a mother. some bay area leaders have another take. >> i'm a black woman. i'm a mother. i'm an educator. all of these legacies mean that i have no choice but to fight. >> how a school board member could be so self-absorbed to file this type of lawsuit is outrageous. >> her attorney is giving the school board one week to call a special session to rescind its vote. registered nurses at good samaritan hospital raising concerns about staffing levels. and they argue it may even be
