and things happened. what we're doing is uplifting the courage of these mothers. we come across vacant homes on a daily basis when we're organizing. there's an empty space. there's an empty space. >> mothers for housing. we plan to take and occupy vacant houses from speculators that are just sitting vacant. we believe families living on the street deserve to be there. >> and you can start bingeing "the moms of magnolia street" today on roku, apple tv or our youtube channels. right now at 6:00, a different kind of a race for a vaccine. everyone over 50 can now book an appointment, and that means the pool just got a whole lot larger. how many times will you have to hit refresh if you try to book online? >> we have live team coverage and helpful tips for you and your loved ones as the new mad dash gets under way. plus --
6:01 am
>> that was hit well. center field. >> that's right. play ball. oakland a's fans getting ready for opening day at the coliseum. the big changes you can expect if you're a fan in the stand today. all of it avoiding contact. good thursday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. well, this morning it's a big day on tap for california's vaccine rollout. that's because starting this morning people over 50 anywhere across the state are eligible to get that vaccine. in the bay area one potential big catch. health leaders warn in most cases there's already a long line of people waiting to roll up their sleeves because supply just isn't meeting demand. >> if you haven't started hunting just yet you may want to get going on that. more people are eligible, appointments will be harder to come by. >> but doing some smart research could put you closer to the head of the line. take a look at your screen.
6:02 am
consumer investigator chris chmura will show us how to use online tools to book your shot. >> reporter: this is the third time we've made a how to get a covid-19 vaccine video because so much is changing so fast. we're going to run you through some of the official and unofficial places you can use to hunt down where and when vaccine appointments are available. your best bet might be bulk, maximize your chances of getting a slot. begin at vaccinefinder.org. it plots availability on a map by zip code and radius. green dots are places that have open appointments. you can trust it. it's an official product of boston children's hospital supported by the cdc. california's official website is myturn.ca.gov. if it doesn't have open appointments, check with your local public health department. if you're a member of a big health plan, check to see if it
6:03 am
has open appointments. you can book directly online. some folks online say batches of new open appointments are posted each night at midnight. we asked cvs. a rep says they open at various times of the day. we watched over a few hours one night. the system seemed to update about every 30 minutes. midnight came and went with no big change. but then we saw a spike around 1:00 a.m. the number of cvs locations with open slots statewide shot from 15 to 149. then a steady morning drop-off. they were almost all gone by 10:00 a.m. some unofficial websites like vaxxmax.com and vaccinespotter.org may help you with the leg work. they comb multiple sites and then combine availability data into lists or maps that are simple to use. you don't even have to register. you can just search. what about doses left over?
6:04 am
my colleague scott budman reported that the website dr.b created a clever unofficial standby list. clinics are encouraged to report extra vaccine to them. then if you sign up dr.b will send you a time sensitive alert to snag a surplus shot. you enroll at hidrb.com with your mobile phone number and other info. if that concerns you, we recommend reading the privacy policy at the bottom of the website. that's how to get a covid-19 vaccine part three. when or if everything changes again and we have to make part four, we'll have it for you right here. >> keeping tabs as everything changes. this morning as you try to book an appointment for you or your loved one, we try to get you covered. we have a team working online testing the systems to let you know where you can score an appointment. we'll be checking in with them all morning long. first to cierra johnson in san
6:05 am
francisco ininspecting the retail websites this hour. how is it looking? >> reporter: we're in burlingame now. throughout the morning we have been keeping tabs on the websites focusing on the retail side of getting that vaccine with three specific businesses. we're focusing on safeway, cvs and walgreens. right now i am not eligible based on the age, but hypothetically we're going to use my age of 50 to try to secure an appointment. so if you have used that my turn california website, at the bottom of the page it offers retail options. one of the first ones that popped up was safeway. this is the page it takes you to, actually the parent company, albertson's. you would insert your zip code and then it would show the availability. right now it's not showing much availability actually in the san francisco area but there is good news. it does say this appointment availability is updated in
6:06 am
intervals of 30 minutes. i've updated it about three times now and there's still no availability, but it is nice encourage you to refresh the page. in cvs and walgreens, there were no appointments on those sites either and did not offer the disclaimer of when they would post new appointments. i've been still refreshing there. continue to search even if the page does not prompt you to. one of my colleagues did have luck securing a vaccine at one of those retail stores. it was raj mathai. he did secure a shot at walmart. take a listen to what he had to say. >> okay, everyone, it worked. after a few days of unsuccessfully trying to book a vaccine appointment, i finally got one listening to our own reporters. there's that sweet spot we were reporting all day. wait until after midnight. here i am after the 11:00 news. it is past midnight. i went online and, bam, wouldn't you know, three appointments
6:07 am
available right at the walmart right near my house. i booked one next week. i'm good to go. good luck. wait until after midnight. >> reporter: so some good news there for him. he mentioned checking in those off hours. right now it is pretty early so if you're an early bird or a night owl those may be prime times based on his research and what some of our experts have been saying about securing a vaccine. again, nothing in the three retailers i've been checking, but there are some additional resources you can use to try to secure a spot. in chris chmura's package he mentioned bots. they are not as we would traditionally thinking of them gathering up appointments and spread to someone else. these bots comb through the available appointments in the bay area and present to you a list of appointments you would be able to select from. we have a list of some of those bot-type sites on our website that you can use. still, check wherever you can.
6:08 am
safeway was offering to keep you updated on the site. a lot of folks will be doing it so check frequently to secure your spot. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> raj mentioned staying up late but i'm on the side of getting up early. i went on vaccinefinder.org and there are some in the south bay. you have to get up and get going on that. thanks so much. contra costa county is used to a crush of more demand. they widened access to anyone over 16. county leaders say 50,000 people under 50 have already registered since tuesday, more than 1,500 requests an hour. they're urge anyoning eligible to sign up. >> here is a look at how many
6:09 am
people are vaccinated by county. 58% of the people living in marin county have had at least one shot. napa is not reporting right now. santa clara county is only at 36%. 6:09. rallies and vigils continue calling for unity against asian-american and pacific islander violence. several people pledged solidarity and understanding of the complicated history in america for the aapi community. >> the community needs to help protect and defend us and we as asian-americans have to step out of the shadows. >> a group of executives are also taking new action. several signed on to a letter pledging to raise $10 million. let's take a live look at the oakland coliseum. baseball fans have been waiting
6:10 am
for more than a year for this. it is opening day with real live fans back in the stands for the first time since 2019. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez, there she is, joins us live at ring central. this has all the makings of an opening day like no other. we're so excited. >> reporter: opening day is always exciting but this year we're not going to have the regular traditions you might expect. we gain in the excitement of the fact we get to be here at all. it has been more than a year since fans have been able to put their butts in seats. cardboard cutouts and that piped in recorded cheering was the only in-person encouragement for your oakland a's. with distancing requirements, the coliseum can now open up at 26% capacity which is about 12,000 fans in seats.
6:11 am
masks and social distancing will be required. concessions will be cashless only and mobile, meaning you'll get it delivered to your seat, no tailgating will be allowed. 9-year-old nicholas thomson's family will be here. over the last year the family battled covid. the grown-ups worked essential jobs. the kids did distance learning from home. watching the a's from home was a bright spot but they can't wait to watch in person. >> i think this is going to be a new normal but it is nice to get back some part of what we had before the pandemic hit. let's hope for a win on thursday and we make the playoffs again. >> reporter: even if fans are welcome, ring central coliseum, this is still a federally run mass vaccination site and that will continue at least through halfway through april.
6:12 am
we'll talk more about what that will be like and if you have a shot what you should do to come here. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all good info. thank you, kris. coverage of today's home opener begins at 6:00 on our sister station, nbc sports california. the game starts a little after 7:00 p.m. vianey arana joins us to tell us about opening night temperatures. a nice way to start out, vianey? indeed. first pitch is right around the 7:00 hour and look at that. 70 degrees. by 8:00, 9:00, dipping down into the 60s. going to be a fantastic day to see that ball fly. if you're wondering about the giants, i know they're in seattle at an away game. first pitch, 53 degrees.

voice. it tech crunch says it will be effective for the next update of ios and two new voices to choose from. the way i look at it, there are three schools of thought. one is i don't really care and the other is i do care and should be able to make a change. the third that can influence from the very beginning is this tradition that gadgets and other devices have a female voice because in airplanes that has been the default. this is leslie schuck. she worked for boeing for decades and she's the automated voice fighter pilots hear. that has been the default. there's not a lot of scientific evidence that people listen to women's voices more than men but it's been a tradition and an understanding that pilots do. maybe they had good, strong moms.
6:19 am
>> very good point. i loved when keith morrison did -- you have arrived at your destination, or have you. >> love his voice. >> thanks, scott. well, trending this morning a very sweet moment with blink 182 drummer and his daughter. she covered up his face tattoos. take a look. >> barker's daughter is showing the new good apple foundation on her instagram so she covered the word blessed on his left cheek and the anchor on his right. can you tell? there you go. oh, wow. that is good. is that called concealer? >> that's some heavy duty foundation.
