"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in san jose with how it could get a

little bit easier, tell us about it. a lot of people are having a tough time, kris. >> reporter: a lot of people are hitting the refresh and you may have to do that this weekend because it's hard to get a vaccine with so many more people available. in santa clara county things might start to get a little bit easier. there were a lot of folks trying to get those vaccine appointments yesterday, the first day that people 50 and up were eligible. they found folks were checking state, county, retail sites. we did that yesterday for you as well only to find very few appointments that were booked really, really fast. santa clara county in particular has been struggling with supply. the number of vaccines flat over the last couple of weeks but now the county is able to open first those appointments again because next week the county is going to get 80,000 doses, a 38% increase

on top of an allotment headed to kaiser. >> weer told the vaccine supply should increase by the middle or end of april and well into may. >> we're thinking of a dre trip to fresno but i don't want to take a shot away from somebody's county when my own county should be taking care of me. >> reporter: so the good news for her is that she's not going to have to drive to fresno after all because she ended up getting an appointment closer to home. so all of that refreshing worked out for her. you might be feeling the same guilt she was feeling about getting a vaccine in another county but you should know this. under the federal vaccine program, the vaccines that pharmacies get, retail locations get, they don't come from the county so you're not taking somebody else's vaccine in another county. those vaccines are coming from the federal stockpile so that might make you feel better and you're not breaking the rules by doing that.

you're wracking up a couple extra miles on your car. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a tour of our state so to speak. thanks so much, kris. when it comes to vaccinations the system must be working. all the talk of introducing a fourth vaccine is looking like a non-starter and this morning an exclusive new inside look at how one vaccine is made, showing the process is actually getting more efficient. cierra johnson joins us live in san francisco this morning. really great to hear with so many people planning to gather for easter weekend. >> reporter: yes, good morning. it's really the weekend of two stories. as you mentioned, pfizer some big news coming out of pfizer, they're reducing the number of days it takes to produce their vaccine but the other big story, easter weekend for many people, this is the first holiday where folks have been vaccinated as well as some counties have loosened some of those covid restrictions, but national health advisers are urging folks

to stay safe this weekend, and to not gather in large groups. this as nbc releases new data. cases are up by 12% nationwide. hospitalizations also up and the average number of deaths now top 900 per day. so for those looking to celebrate this weekend, what do experts consider those safe activities? the cdc is urging virtual church services, outdoor celebrations and for those of you with little ones looking to do an easter egg hunt, cdc recommending you to limit it to your immediate family. >> this will end. we need to hold out just a bit longer and give vaccines a chance to really g in this. >> reporter: some good advice there and on the vaccine front, new this morning, nbc received an exclusive look at the production at a pfizer vaccine production plant, the company saying they have reduced the amount of time it takes to make

that vaccine from, get this, 110 days to just 60 days. really good news on that front, they're able to crank out more vaccines for the folks who need them. it's crucial we stay vigilant. some folks may have completed their vaccines and some of the restrictions have been loosened. it's crucial that everyone remains vigilant, practice that social distancing, handwashing, everything we've been doing for more than a year so we avoid the spikes like we saw after thanksgiving and christmas of 2020. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> yes, good advice, because it is tempting, everybody starting to get a little lax and we can't do that. thanks, cierra. right now everyone as we've been saying over the age of 50 is eligible in california to receive the vaccine but take a look at this. contra costa county, that is the exception, because 16 and up is the age requirement there within that county. but a little less than two weeks from now, all other counties are

expected to do the same thing. eligibility expands to everyone 16 and over on april 15th. now the white house has now designated an impressive march employment report out that we told you about this morning. great report there, job creation already front and center at the white house with the long-term mission to get more americans back to work and seems to be working but will republicans support this plan? "today in the bay's" tracie potts has the latest from washington. >> reporter: today's unemployment report follows president biden's promise to produce millions of infrastructure jobs. >> it is about winning jobs in america. >> reporter: five cabinet members are promoting his american jobs plan and the 28% corporate tax hike to pay for it. >> there are corporations in this country that have made billions of dollars in profits and paid zero, zero in federal taxes. everybody knows that's wrong. >> reporter: the senate's top republican says his party won't

support it. >> the last thing the economy needs is a big whopping tax increase on all the productive sectors of our economy. >> if you raise the taxes are you going to push jobs out of the country. >> reporter: more people are trying to get into the country. last night the government reported just under 5,000 children still in border patrol custody including two toddlers, sisters caught on video as a smuggler dropped them 14 feet over a border fence in the dark. >> these are unaccompanied children that are showing up at our border, and every day our border patrol agents are out there with compassion and just taking care of these children. >> reporter: senator joe manchin wants to close the border for 90 days. >> sending that message that we're not going to be taking people into this country until we get our ability to make sure we're able to do it and do it right. >> reporter: tracie potts, nbc news. an effort by angry parents to remove three san francisco school board members is now officially under way. recall organizers this week

received petition approval meaning they can now start collecting signatures. the recall targets three board members including allison collins, who is suing to hold on to her position. the remaining board members have not served long enough to qualify for a recall. organizers have 160 days to collect the required signatures to hold a recall special election. the earliest date for that would be late november. the earliest date -- will be late november, yes. >> thanks, laura. developing this morning, we got to tell you something that's happening at the university of san francisco leaders are investigating a possible hate crime. someone left a noose hanging on a campus balcony. the incident happened this week and the university says the student responsible was already removed from student housing, while that investigation continues. it's not yet clear what the student's motives were, but black students on campus tell us they still don't feel safe. >> i do feel like it put me on

edge a lot. every time i walk down the stairway, you can sort of just look up and see the balcony in which the noose was placed. >> the school sent an email to students wednesday, one day after the discovery was made and says that it's not satisfying what the university has done to handle this incident or even others. the group started a petition demanding that the student be identified and expelled, and that the school do more to combat racism. baseball is back in oakland with a great night for a baseball game, especially seeing fans in the stands for the first time in 18 months. there were some lowlights, though. we'll spare them because the a's had a little bit of a problem with houston. let's just say inside the stadium not everything went smoothly as well namely the app that fans use to order their concessions. it crashed. a lot of angry fans were left hanging by the surprise curveball, they cried foul. >> we're leaving because there's no option to buy any food or drink. >> i was going to try to order

well, good morning and a good good friday to you as well. the markets are closed today in observance of the holiday, but the bureau of labor is testifily laboring and it just released the march jobs reports and it's great. 916,000 of our american friends and neighbors gained new jobs last month. that sent the unemployment rate down to 6%. more than 3 million americans are looking for jobs but nearly a million a month you can see how quickly we're recovering. president biden will speak about the great jobs number later this morning. he had this scheduled before he knew what the numbers would say. he does not get a sneak peek ahead of time. politico reports president biden asked his education secretary

whether it would be legal to cancel $50,000 in student debt for each student rather than his original $10,000. we'll talk more about it as we talk politics at the back half of the hour. the rapper known as ice cube is angry at the stock picking app robinhood. o'shea jackson filed a lawsuit saying robinhood used his picture without his permission and it implies he endorses the app. he does not. you can see it here on their website on a newsletter, a still from one of his movies. jackson is not shy about what he thinks of robinhood. he says in his lawsuit "robinhood is the antithesis of everything that ice cube stands for. it represents corporate greed on a massive scale. robinhood used ice cube's image and likeness to promote horrible products and services, the last thing in the world which ice cube would attach his image and likeness." wells fargo is getting

involved in politics a little bit. the ceo releasing a statement saying now the bank supports declaring election day in november as a national holiday. marcus and laura, there has been a push to do that. the say if you make election day a day off, people will take monday off, go on vacation and not vote at all. >> that's possible. i could -- like i'm think being it. i'm like for a lot of people vote something so important, we know some don't vote but still, i'm trying to think it through. all right. >> and people are supposed to get time off to vote anyway. >> right. >> they are, that's right, supposed to get time off to vote and there's the argument with the national holiday, you take a national holiday like martin luther king day, a lot of people are still working, there's no reason to think they wouldn't, if they're working some jobs work that job, holiday anyway. >> hopefully they can early vote. >> we have to remember, it's a privilege and you know, that's

your voice. very important. >> a lot of people shed blood for us to vote. always vote. 6:17 for you this morning. new for you, "the mercury news" stanford is investing claims hackers stole personal data from the school of medicine. it's not clear what information was stolen or how many were affected. the hack is part of a larger cyber attack and universities as well as organizations, all of which use the palo alto based file sharing service. we reached out to stanford for comment but they have not gotten back to us. trending this morning an unusual catch for customs agents at jfk airport. they stopped a man they say was trying to smuggle in nearly 30 finches and look at this, they were stuck inside those hair rollers. agents say they made the discovery sunday in a suitcase belonging to a man from guyana. he said he was just trying to get to new jersey. he was not a u.s. citizen, he was fined $300 and also sent

a bit more cloud cover in through the afternoon, but right now, look at san jose. what a stunning shot, as we start to see the sunrise over walnut creek. current satellite radar right now you can see no rain in sight, so i'll talk about what's going to happen with that in a bit but we are seeing some fog. look at santa rosa, down to about a quarter of a mile when it comes to fog, novato down to five miles. same for half moon bay and how about the current temperatures right now, 40s and 50s, so a mild start, will make way for a comfortable afternoon. daytime highs for today in san jose 75, oakland 66, palo alto 72 and temperatures around the coastline will be a little bit more normal for this time of year, 50s and 60s. speaking of the rain, it looks like that system that we were monitoring that could have brought us a chance of rain for monday is going to stay off on the coast, going to stay in the pacific, which means our chances for rain have continued to decrease, which of course as you all know we need it. speaking of needing rain, the

latest drought monitor yesterday released that we are at least 90% of california -- the 98% of california is severely dry. hopefully we get rain into the second week of april. enjoy the cool weather this weekend. mike? >> yes. definitely take advantage of the great weather but we definitely need that water. out on the roadways, we have this. the live look at the san mateo bridge. notice something different about this shot, if it's still there, oh you know what? it just cleared. there was a veil of red that would blink on and off indicating there was something near the camera, a service crew. as we look at the map it's in the middle of the screen, no slowing and it cleared, that's great. south bay there is an issue, disabled vehicle south 880 at baskham, may be an issue getting out of of the slow lane i'm tracking that and the volume 580 westbound withed headlights is fine. tail lights may slow early in the afternoon as folks make their way to tahoe and central

how far would you go for a covid-19 vaccine in miles? >> consumer investigator chris chmura found many open appointments if you're willing to drive. he actually shows us where and how to cover the cost of getting there because it may be a long haul for you. >> on the first day of people 50 plus being eligible for the covid-19 vaccine appointments dried up fast, but if you expand your search and commit to a road trip, you might be able to find appointments that are available

with little or no waiting. take a look at cvs. we found 11 locations with open appointments. bakersfield, chico, clovis, fresno, han ford, kingsburg, madeira, porterville, sangley and weaverville. it's been like this a week. we know because we've been watching. because we're from a different county we called cvs to confirm they'd actually give us the vaccine. they said yes. before you hop in the car, we recommend you make the same confirmation call. if you're rolling your eyes, i get it. any of these 300 or 400-mile round trips will cost you serious time off from work, and gas money. it's four bucks a gallon now but let me help with those. first, your boss might pay you during your drive. many companies are offering paid time off to get the covid-19 vaccine. in some cases, it's actually required. listen to this, from the department of industrial relations. if your employer requires you to obtain a covid-19 test or

vaccination, then your employer for the testing or vaccination including travel time. ask your boss or hr. that's one part done. now what about gas money? uncle sam might lend a hand. >> if you're driving, you know, to prevent or mitigate a health issue, that's deductible. >> it's 16 cents per mile, for a 394-mile round trip drive from san jose to chico that's probably a $63 tax deduction. to try to get it, record your miles and keep proof of your vaccination appointment for your 2021 taxes. >> you want to have accurate records of the date that you traveled and the purpose of the travel. >> one final note about safety. we asked stanford health care about driving a couple hours right after you get the vaccine. one of its infectious disease doctors said this. if you have someone to accompany you to your vaccine it's a good added layer of reassurance in case you have a reaction.

this is video from our own melissa colorado. one neighbor according to the "east bay times" says cars are triple parked in front of his driveway he needs to walk blocks away to receive anything from delivery trucks and the city says emergency responders also have this trouble getting down the snarled lakeshore avenue on the weekend so it could be a safety issue. the city called for more police presence at lake merritt on the weekends. vendors can be seen selling alcohol in makeshift underground bars and tents and trash is a big problem, after nights of partying. the city council discussed ways to try and provide permits for the vendors who sell jewelry and goods on the weekends but for now they want to focus on controlling the mayhem that's going on the weekends. reporting live, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay."

>> thanks so much, sharon. 6:32. developing right now in fremont, the investigation into a deadly police shooting happened last night at the hyatt place hotel on west warren avenue. investigators say a special firearms task force team was trailing a man with outstanding warrants. two detectives approached. police tell us they first released a police dog then it turned deadly. >> the sequence of events i know the k9 was deployed before the shooting and at the time that the k9 was deployed, that's when the suspect produced a firearm and when the officers shot him. >> the man died at the scene. police have not released his name. none of the officers involved were injured. this is fremont's second deadly police shooting in eight days.d for the vaccine in san francisco.t least their first vaccination shot. now in six weeks' time, it should be more tha mayor london breed expects the

rate to reach 80% by mid-may more than 60% of the residents over the age of 65 are now fully vaccinated. san francisco is ramping up vaccination efforts for seniors living in chinatown. the city plans to vaccinate 1,000 public housing residents through a mobile vaccination clinic over the next two weeks. health leaders say throughout the city, 80% of people 65 and up have received at least one dose of the vaccine, but the vaccination rate is about 65% for seniors living in chinatown. this morning, we're tracking a new hate crime investigation. this one in los gatos. police chief there says a filipino woman was working near los gatos boulevard and garden lane, when a man on a bicycle came up behind her, pushed her and yelled a racist comment. in a video statement he adds these attacks on asian-americans >> as a person of asian and pacific islander descent, i am

watching with shock and dismay the continuing acts of violence and hate directed towards people who look like me. it is happening all across our country, but i'm here today asking for your help with a hate crime that occurred in our own town. >> fortunately the victim was not hurt. new this morning, one executive order that reportedly may not be going anywhere once the pandemic is over. california's rule allowing distilleries to ship their products directly to consumers. governor newsom issued that order to help keep struggling small-time companies in business. the "sacramento bee" reports a recently introduced bill would make the order permanent and allow craft brewers in and out of the state to ship to california residences. wineries have been able to ship their products in the state for years. happening today, another popular outdoor destination becomes available to visit once again. pacifica pier has been closed since mid-january because of the damage due to pounding surf during the winter storms.

standards. 56 degrees on saturday, monterey 58 by sunday and seeing an increase in the low clouds around the coastline. 67 degrees for santa cruz today, so today still is okay. we're going to be comfortable. by the weekend it will get cooler so something to keep in mind there. if you're not heading to the beach, you might be headed to a wine tasting supporting the local wineries. we'll be in the 70s today and then 60s by tomorrow, so that's about a ten-degree drop, 20-plus if you compare it to the past two days really. now napa valley maybe you're headed over to the tahoe area, and they did get some stuff from our previous storms but now we get a little bit of cooling headed into the weekend, 62 degrees on sunday, and then by monday, dipping back down into the 50s which is more seasonable for this time of year. no matter where you g the weather will be great, it's cooler and we'll notice more cloud cover and fog around the coastline especially in those early morning hours. so enjoy your weekend.

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joins us live in san jose and there's a little hope, you say, may get a little easier? >> reporter: yes, but you know, just think back to the days when you would try to get a really cool concert ticket and you would have to keep going through ticketmaster, searching and searching and looking and looking, you know, those are the skills that you're going to need this weekend as you try to get a covid appointment. although, it is going to start getting easier for some folks. we heard some folks did get some appointments yesterday, the first day of eligibility for 50 years and up. we also heard a lot of frustration, though, from people who were toggling back and forth between state site, county site, retail sites only to find few appointments that were snapped up in the blink of an eye. santa clara county in particular has been struggling with supply with the number of vaccines that they've gotten over the last week remaining flat, but the

county is now able to open first those appointments again because next week it's getting 80,000 doses, that's 22,000 more, 37% increase over the last few weeks, and that's on top of an some people are planning road trips, two other counties where pharmacies have vaccines and maybe you're like a lot of people and you feel a little guilty about that, wondering if you're taking somebody else's vaccine if you're travel into the central valley, where they've gotten, had heavier cases. the answer is this. those vaccines are coming from a different source so you're not taking somebody's vaccine in fresno. you are taking it from the federal allotment. so you might feel a little bit better about that and you're not breaking the rules. so it may be time for a road trip if you have time for that. if not, just keep hitting "refresh" on your browser on your senator phone. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right, thanks so much,

kris. we've got some new details coming to light about the suspect in the mass shooting at an office complex near disneyla four people died in the city of orange. investigators say gonzalez chained the front and rear gates of the office building with bicycle cable locks, went inside and killed four people, including a 9-year-old boy. one man lost his mother and father. he says his parents were both loving people. >> just super loving, very loving mom, same with my dad, always put others in front of her and was always a very happy character. >> what a loss. his sister was also shot. she's in critical condition. police now say the suspect knew the victims. he was also injured by gunfire. breaking news coming in and it's encouraging news on the job front. the u.s. added 916,000 jobs in

march, way over the estimates closer to 600,000 and the highest amount in months. the unemployment rate dropped to 6%. that's down from february's 6.2%. analysts say that hiring is surging with the economy recovering. president biden will speak about those job numbers this morning. >> and scott mcgrew, those numbers are just as much a surprise to him as anyone else. >> that's exactly right. the president does not get an early peek at the jobs number even if he's president. he waits just like the rest of us and normally there's also a pretty long waiting period when he learns about the numbers and when he can speak about it. not every president always followed that rule, but the markets aren't open today anyway. president biden held his first full cabinet meeting thursday, socially distanced. as you saw. he assigned some of his cabinet secretaries to take charge of the infrastructure plan and make sure the money america spent tod

materials. the plan also has money to reinvigorate american manufacturing, including chip manufacturing, the shortage of chips of course affecting all kinds of industries. now to do all this, america's going to have to come up with trillions of dollars, and as you might imagine, mitch mcconnell doesn't like that. >> with a combination of massive tax increases on businesses and individuals and more borrowing, to add even more to the $2 trillion national debt. >> reporter: now there are a couple of clarifications that need to be made there. the national debt is more like $28 trillion. i think he just misspoke, and the proposal does not include raising taxes on people, individuals. it would raise taxes on corporations. as for that debt, debt is bad,

but it's not clear the american public cares. president trump came into office promising he would erase the debt in eight years, but it nearly doubled even before the pandemic. speaking of erasing debt, politico reporting that president biden asked his education secretary whether it would be possible to increase the amount of debt forgiveness for every student from his proposed $10,000 to $50,000. student debt is one of the big drags on the economy, and affects people of all ages, including the number of people who are able to buy houses because they're still paying off debt which in turn affects older people and their ability to sell that very same house. president biden has been under a lot of pressure from the left to increase debt forgiveness. we'll be watching to hear what the president says about that really, really solid march jobs report, we're talking about it on twitter as well. you'll find me there, i'm @scottmcgrew. >> thanks. new this morning, one north bay city is helping better prepare residents for the upcoming fire season and with the growing drought conditions, it may be more of a challenge.

santa rosa received a fema grant to provide thousands of weather radios which can alert people to extreme knsz or evacuations, given away for the next two months for people in the most high-risk areas. the first giveaway is next week. go to the city of santa rosa's website for more information. i want you to think about it this. in a normal season baseball teams play 162 games. >> not a bad way to look at it especially if you're an a's fan because last night the a's opened the season with a dud. certainly the big highlight was the 12,000 or so fans actually in the stands. on the field, it was close until the sixth inning, when the astros scored two runs to make it 3-0. houston ended up taking that 8-1. but they're back at it tonight at 7:00 p.m. giants fans should probably morning, perhaps more so because their loss was downright painful.

we're seeing cooler temperatures, which means you don't have to worry too much about beating the heat before making it out the door. san jose look at that sun, starting to peek on through, and definitely going to see a beautiful day ahead. this is a pretty shot of walnut creek, a little bit of an orange glow there. let's look at doppler radar and satellite. high pressure is king over the last couple days and an onshore flow that will switch things up, drop our temperatures down, it's going to bring back that marine layer and we're starting to see some of that fog. santa rosa down to about a quarter of a mile visibility, half moon bay down to about five miles of visibility so definitely notice more fog action out there. in addition to that, cooler weather today. no record-breaking temperatures expected for today, that stretch has ended at least for now, anyway. san jose 75 degrees. oakland 66. concord 75, and notice half moon bay san francisco and santa cruz. santa cruz has been pretty warm this week, back down into the

50s. if you didn't get a chance to hit the beach when it was hot, it's going to get cooler this weekend. what about the rain? well we were monitoring a system that was going to bring us the possibility of maybe seeing a chance of showers on april 5th, which is next monday but it looks like that low pressure system is going to pretty much stay out in the pacific, which means our chances of seeing, if any, rain, are starting to diminish, and we need it. the latest drought monitor revealed over 99% of california is abnormally dry. 90% of california under some ex drought and any time we see drought conditions like this, unfortunately it could signal the start of an early fire season which we never want to see and in addition to that, reservoirs are looking dry compared to where we're supposed be at this time of year, around 72% and our four reservoirs in the state of california. sunshine the next couple weeks but let's hope for rain the second week of april. mike? >> all right, vianey.
