prince philip at the age of 99. a live look at buckingham palace, where the royal announcement was just posted. we expect to see crowds showing up, they drop off flowers and other items at the gate. prince philip was just two months away from his 100th birthday. the royal family says the husband of britain's queen elizabeth ii passed away in his sleep at windsor castle. the prince was queen elizabeth's closest confidant. the couple married for more than 73 years. prince philip was just released from the hospital after undergoing treatment. british prime minister boris johnson spoke about his death earlier this morning. >> it is to her majesty and her family that our nation's thoughts must turn today because they have lost not just a much-loved and highly respected public figure, but a devoted husband and a proud and loving father, grandfather, and in

recent years, great grandfather. >> so many tributes coming in, the duke and duchess of sussex tweeting condolences, the royal family releasing a statement "it is with deep sorrow that her queen majesty has announced the death of her beloved husband, his royal highness, the prince philip, duke of edinburgh." their message, "rest in peace, your royal highness." taking you back out live to buckingham palace once again, you see the crowds growing there, much more coverage of the loss in this british monarchy coming up on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m., right after "today in the bay." our other top story, the suspect in the attack of an elderly asian woman in san francisco is due in court today and his attorney will be trying to show with video evidence why the crime is not a hate crime. 6:03 am
>> reporter: good morning to you, marcus. the suspect's public defender says he himself was the victim of an attack before that. san francisco public defender eric mcburney says it shows his client steven jenkins who was homeless was assaulted by several people in different directions, suffering more than 40 blows to his head before he could get away. in the other video, jenkins takes a swing at xiao zhen xie who in turn fought back. the public defender says that while it seems there has been an increase in crimes against asians and pacific islanders, this is not one of them. >> i see what other people see in the news, so it does seem that way, does appear that way. i have heard accounts from other asians who had similar experiences.

as we've been reporting in less than a week, vaccine eligibility is opening up to anyone 16 or older in california. but there are a lot of questions surrounding whether an employer can require you to get one. one legal expert says the answer still isn't clear. he says the vaccines are fda approved only for emergency use, which makes company mandates difficult. >> both the cdc and the fda have pretty much stated that these are voluntary. >> he says travelers, shoppers and restaurant patrons could be required to show proof of vaccination, however, he expects many of the questions are already making their way through the courts. 6:05 right now. it is almost time to play ball. pull out those jerseys, show your black and orange. the boys are back at oracle park. this season opener for the giants will be the first game of the park since the start of the pandemic, and like just about

every other aspect of our lives, things are going to look a little different. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson at willie mays plaza live this morning with the changes that fans can expect. one thing that probably remains the same, cierra, is that excitement that literally you can feel in the air when you're out there. >> reporter: yes, good morning. it is still really early but we can feel the excitement we've seen staff members coming in on their bikes and scooters, everyone just really with a smile because today is the day the boys are back, excitement is going to fill the air in just a matter of hours, but we are still in the middle of a global pandemic, so with all of that excitement will come some changes just to keep everyone safe. so to start with, how many folks will be inside? right now it's 22% capacity, which akin to about 9,000 people. before you get inside a couple of things you need to confirm, show that you are fully vaccinated, and 14 days out from the final dose, that's an
6:07 am
important bit of information to remember, and if you have not been fully vaccinated or don't have that card, a negative covid test no more than 72 hours old is also acceptable for admission. once inside, things will continue to look a little different. fans will be seated in those socially distanced pods within the park, and they come with specific entrances, concession stands and restrooms and i know food is always a big deal when you go to any park. the organization urging fans to order their concessions using an app and then you will go to that designated zone to pick up your food, so if you haven't been to a game in a couple years, today will look a lot different than the games you've seen in the past and as you can imagine, the staff members are also excited. some of them have been working from home, they haven't been with this great backdrop we have here so i have mario aliotto, vice president of business operations and a little birdie told me he has been here for about 40 years, started as a bat boy, and he is still with us.
6:08 am
that is the ultimate climb, in my opinion. i guess first question your personal feelings you've been here for many so your feelings specifically? >> i appreciate that. we're excited, this is an opening day it will be different than any we've seen in years and there's something about opening day where life feels good again and we've all been through so much over the last year and to be able to get together, bring this ball park, our community comes back together and see a ball game, even if it's the no the way we're all used to, there's just something just positive about that, as we kind of get out of this together. >> reporter: and i know opening day there's always a special part at the beginning. talk about the opening ceremony. what can we expect for today's opener? >> first. itch pitch is 1:35 but the ceremony starts at 1:00. this one will be special. we've all been through so much. we're going to unveil this theme of resiliency and whether it's our community in the bay area, our employees, our team, our fans, we've been through a lot and we really want to pull everyone together under that word of resilience.
6:09 am
we'll have a lot of health care workers. we always have our surprise first pitch today, but i will say the first pitch definitely fits in the theme of resilient, so it's going to be just a moving ceremony but at the end of the day, we're excited, because baseball is back and yes, you're right, 8,900 fans all together but the last time we had fans in the ball park was september of '19 which was bruce bochy's last game so it's been a while. we're excited to be back again. >> reporter: we ran out of time but he did mention something that was very important, apparently there's a couple hundred extra tickets that have been released. >> right. >> reporter: we are able to access those. >> go to sfgiants.com. we have a couple hundred left, they're great locations because the visiting team is not going to use their comps, so check it out. you may get lucky and come to the ball game. >> reporter: you still need to be prepared with the proof of vaccination or that negative covid test so if you already have that in your pocket it could be a good opportunity to catch the first home game of the season. a lot of excitement,
6:10 am
everything's all lit up. you mentioned you could see the stadium from the bay bridge, so very exciting stuff out here. i'll be out here all morning, live in front of oracle park, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> i love it. it's always a lot of fun. we love everything they do on opening day. the possibility if you can get in there and gets tickets, thanks so much. if you're staying at home, grab your crackerjacks, nbc sports bay area is your home for today's home opener. special giants coverage is kicking off at 12:30 this afternoon, right ahead of that first pitch set to take place a little after 1:30. going to be a great day, marcus. >> great day indeed. she was saying you could see the stadium from the bay bridge. take a look at the toll plaza right there this morning. we told you last fall the bay area toll workers and cash toll will never come back. that's now going to apply to all bridges in california. the state is already headed that way with the pandemic just speeding things along. mike, we've noticed a lot of changes when it comes to the road weis during the pandemic. >> yes, we've had consistently
