i'm phillip mena. >> glad you're with us i'm frances rivera breaking news near minneapolis where police enforced a curfew on the second night of protests. 40 arrests were made overnight some officers were hit by debris and reports of looting at five businesses these protests are in response to the death of dante wright shot by police his family is expected to speak at a press conference today along with attorney ben crumb and members of george floyd's family >> overnight kamala harris tweeted dante's family needs to know why their child is dead they deserve answers new details have been revealed the officer was identified as 26 year veteran of the force kim potter body camera footage was released meagan fitzgerald has this report first a warning, you may find the video disturbing >> body camera video shows the

moment when 20-year-old dante wright, a black man was shot and killed at the hands of police sunday afternoon wright was pulled over for driving with expired tags and police discovered he had a warrant out for his arrest >> that's why they were removing him from the car and making custodial arrest. >> police chief calling this an accidental shooting. >> it is my belief that the officer had the intention to deploy the taser but shot mr. wright with a single bullet. >> wright then drove off crashing into another car. his girlfriend was in the passenger's seat when he was pulled over and his mother on the phone. >> the police officer come to the window get out of the car daunte says why. he says, we'll explain to you. a minute later i called and his girlfriend answered and said that he's been shot. >> reporter: hundreds of protesters took to the streets

outraged marching to the brooklyn center police station where the situation escalated. police deploying rubber bullets, tear gas and flash bangs the officer now placed on leave as the mayor calls for her termination. >> i do fully support releasing the officer of her duties. >> reporter: the police chief saying the officer is entitled to due process this taking place just outside of minneapolis, a city already anxious as jurors will soon decide the fate of ex-officer derek chauvin. >> our thanks to meagan fitzgerald for that report. turning now to the latest in the trial of derek chauvin where the defense is set to begin calling witnesses. nbc's gabe gutierrez joins us from outside the courtroom good morning, gabe. >> reporter: good morning. dramatic final day of testimony for the prosecution. i was inside the courtroom as multiple jurors were attentive and taking notes during otherwise dry medical testimony,

but it was george floyd's brother who broke down in tears on the witness stand about ten miles from the unrest last night in brooklyn center. >> this is obviously a high profile case. >> reporter: derek chauvin's attorney asked the judge to sequester the jury. >> one juror is a resident of that particular city and other jurors who have connections to brooklyn center. >> the judge denied the motion. >> i understand the argument from the defense that this now puts them in even more ill at ease, but i think sequestering them would only aggravate that. >> the prosecution then called its 36th witness, dr. jonathan rich, chicago cardiologist. >> i believe mr. george floyd's death was absolutely preventible. >> he testified that george floyd's death was caused by low oxygen levels induced by chauvin's restraint. >> george floyd did not die from a primary cardiac event and he

told the court he'll invoke the fifth amendment to not answer whether he provided floyd drugs. the prosecution will rest today and the defense will take center stage. frances? >> tense days ahead. gabe thank you. the president and vice president will meet with members of the congressional black caucus today president biden's $2 trillion infrastructure plan is at the top of the agenda along with police reform in the wake of the deadly police shooting in minnesota. for the latest, let's bring in alice barr good morning what can we expect from today's meeting? >> reporter: good morning, phillip. this is the second day in a row that president biden is bringing lawmakers to the white house and, yes, he's focused on this massive infrastructure program, roughly $2 trillion price tag. he's trying to shore up support for that yesterday he met with a handful of lawmakers from both parties trying to break through stiff republican opposition and also

to the scope of the plan which goes beyond traditional infrastructure like roads, bridges, even broadband internet the top senate republican mitch mcconnell has called it a grab bag of leftist liberal priorities you have a sense of how fiercely they're pushing back the president doing what he can to try to shore up any potential bipartisan support and get all the lawmakers he can on his side that brings us to the meeting with the congressional black caucus and because of the folks he's going to be meeting with, we can be certain there is going to be a focus on police reform adding to that urgency, of course, this shooting in minnesota of daunte wright what we expect to see is the president declaring where he wants to go on police reform he made promises on creating a commission and making it a priority it's more of a legislative focus and they want to back the george

floyd justice in policing act and have more broad ranging and widespread police reforms. expect to see more of that today. >> current events pushing that to the forefront thanks. one student dead and a police officer injured after a shooting inside a tennessee high school the tennessee in knoxville where police found the gunman in the bathroom erin mclaughlin has the latest developments. >> reporter: a community on edge after a shooting at a high school in knoxville, tennessee there are at least two gunshot victims including a police officer. one male pronounced dead at the scene, another detained for further investigation. >> pray for that situation and for the families and the victims that might be affected by that in our state >> i was really glad to have the opportunity to meet with the officer who was hurt and he's conscious and in good pirits.

in the nation's new pandemic epicenter. in detroit patients are waiting hours for an open bed, many 55 and younger. more infections in the first week in april than all of february. >> there is light at the end of this tunnel but we know that we have seen a recent rise in cases. >> reporter: the governor, who's refusing to issue new mandatory restrictions, is instead asking the government for a larger vaccine supply but the cdc director warned that alone won't stop the surge. >> we know that the vaccine will have a delayed response. the answer to that is to really close things down. >> reporter: though the nation just vaccinated a record 4.6 million americans saturday, this week the country is on pace too inoculate 3 million a day after an 86% decline for the johnson & johnson decline following a manufacturing mixup.
