many silicon valley companies are making plans to have employees return to the office. all new data showing just how many are catching on to the growing trend. "today in the bay" starts right now. at 4:30, we begin with breaking news, and it is big. u.s. regulators reportedly call for a pause in the use of the johnson & johnson vaccine due to blood clotting issues. the cdc and fda released statements just within the last half hour. health officials say so far more than 6.8 million doses of the j&j vaccine have been administered and there have been six reported u.s. cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot. officials add these adverse cases appear to be extremely rare. the cdc is meeting on wednesday to review those cases. we'll, of course, continue to follow this breaking news and we're looking into what this means as on thursday california is opening up vaccine

eligibility to anyone over 16. big news day. good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm sierra johnson in for marcus washington. we'll get to traffic in a moment, but first let's start with our forecast. here's meteorologist kari hall. >> good morning, and we are starting out with nice, cool temperatures and a mostly clear sky. it's going to be actually a cooler day with our temperatures reaching into the 60s and 70s, but you'll also notice a more gusty wind at times, especially near the coastline and in the hills where we can see those gusts at 30 to 40 miles per hour. but our dry weather continues in the forecast, and really not seeing any chance of rain here for at least the next week. we'll talk more about that as well as our temperatures in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for early morning commuters? >> well, kari, not rain like you said, but maybe a little fog. at least, that's what the chp says so we're going to check out the view. they only report when a cruiser

drives across the bridge, for instance. it's circled on the left-hand side. smooth drive there. but farther north we do see our weather registers fog that impacts the north bay. be advised maybe there. usual spots. no surprises right now. we'll check on the tri-valley coming up, laura. back to you. >> thanks so much. developing now a second night of unrest in minnesota where police shot and killed an unarmed 20-year-old black man. demonstrators gathered near the brooklyn center fire department the. law enforcement and crowds continued late into the night. cameras were there as people appeared to loot a dollar general and boost mobile store. officials say about 40 arrests were made. the city's mayor called for calm and said he would do everything he can to make sure justice is served. >> i don't know if any of you know me personally, but if you know me, i want you to

understand that i'm going to do absolutely everything in my power to make sure that justice is done. >> some officers were injured during the demonstrations. they suffered some minor injuries. it's not all happening just in the midwest. the bay area as well. we've got some video to show you. demonstrators gathered outside san jose police headquarters last night. they lit a small fire and held signs reading, justice for daunte wright. the prosecution is soon expected to rest in the murder trial of derek chauvin, the officer accused of killing george floyd. >> we're hearing reports from vallejo from families who struggle to make sense of both of these deaths. >> i'm fearful because i recognize that that could have been my child. >> reporter: victoria adams is reacting to the shooting death

of daunte wright. this body camera shows how everything unfolded when wright was pulled over on a traffic violation. officers said he had a warrant for his arrest and he tried to run. that's when the officer reached for what she thought was her taser, according to the chief of brooklyn center, but instead pulled out her revolver and fired a shot, killing wright. the president of the east chapter of the naacp said her son believes this can happen to him. >> he was told early on that when he encounters an officer to make sure that he pulls out his registration, driver's license, to make sure that he puts them on the dashboard. >> cesius johnson said his son grant didn't have that chance when the officer mistook his

weapon for a taser. >> the two weapons are different, the weight is different, the color scheme is different. >> reporter: he says making that argument is a poor excuse. meanwhile, the daunte wright comes at the start of the third week of the derek chauvin trial in minneapolis, the prosecution nearing their end of their presentation to the jury with both experts saying emphatically that it was police, not george floyd's heart or drug use, that caused his death. as the trial appears to be heading to the jury, police in los angeles and oakland are calling for calm. >> we hope that there is no community unrest and that we can peacefully assemble. >> reporter: adams says she is filled with fear watching black parents' inability to protect their children from becoming victims of police shootings. >> we need to step out and do more and make sure that we can help them as they go down this path. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, today in the bay. well, in two days the covid

vaccine will be available to everyone in the state who is 16 and older. and as you might expect, there is some confusion here in the bay area, and with this morning's breaking news about johnson & johnson about having to pause its shots. there will be even more questions. san jose supervisor matt haney is fired up about the vaccine rollout and how the san jose department will only issue vaccines to county residents 50 or older or those with health problems. however, other bay area counties where 16 and older are eligible are coming to town rolling up their sleeves. >> it's currently available to contra costa and san mateo residents, and i'm happy for them. but it says if you work in san francisco, you're not eligible, and that just doesn't make any sense. . >> they say when they expanded the age to 16 or older, they

couldn't expand to every zip code. some may have to wait until thursday to book an appointment. haney calls that response outrageous. here's a breakdown of all the counties allowing 16 and up right now. it includes contra costa county, l.a. county. those are the counties in orange on the right of your screen. santa clara county in green at bottom of your screen, they're allowing 16 and up to start scheduling their appointments for the 15th. sonoma and napa and sonotta and marin, they will have to wait to book their appointments starting tomorrow. lastly in yellow, right here, san francisco as we mentioned, it's vaccinaing adults 16 and up only in 12 special zip codes, a community hit hard by the virus.

>> this should maybe help as well. happening today a new way to get the vaccine in the north bay. marin county and san rafael county health are joining forces to give vaccines. they're calling it a vaccine supersite. they said the partnership will allow them to administer 3600 shots a day. you will need an appointment, but this morning we don't know how this morning's breaking news that we just told you about from johnson & johnson may impact that, that the fda is now putting that on pause. as more and more people are getting vaccinated, some are wondering when will we be able to take off those masks. one expert thinks it could be as early as the summer. ian cull explains. >> one-third of california residents have received at least one of the vaccines. some are hoping to return to normal without masks. >> these things have to go. >> reporter: these friends will wear masks when they have to,

but can't wait until they don't need one. >> you can't hear anyone, people can't necessarily hear you when you're wearing a mask. i don't really like it. >> reporter: disease expert dr. monica monte says the masks could be lifted on its one-year anniversary of june 19th. >> i think we have to come up with clean metrics for anything we do. the metric that makes the most sense is when everyone in the state has the opportunity to get a vaccine who wants one. >> reporter: but what about for kids who aren't eligible yet? dr. conte thinks they'll be able to ditch the masks before they get shots. she points to a study in israel where 60% of the population is vac natured. >> what the experiences from these two other countries have shown us, if you mask adults, the cases go so low that it drops any transmission in children. >> reporter: and she thinks the

mask mandate won't be lifted all at once. >> so one thing the health department can do is stop the mask mandate, give it a little more than a month, and then take off the indoor mask mandate. >> paula schnur who got the vaccine says she'll continue wearing hers even after the pandemic. >> i'll continue wearing mine forever because it's been nice not to have a cold, a flu or anything else. the giant salesforce tower is gearing up to reopen. employees can continue to work from home through 2021 if they choose, or they can volunteer to return to the iconic tower in may. they said to come back, you have to be vaccinated. facebook, google and intel said their employees do not have to be vaccinated. new this morning, a bay area council poll finds the practice is four times higher here now

the cdc and the fda that they are recommending a pause in the j&j vaccine. johnson & johnson right now the biggest drag within the dow jones industrial average off about 2.5% here in the pre-market. all of the markets have been in a relative calm the past week as they've set into a kind of lull in the earnings season which kicks off tomorrow. we'll get a look at consumer prices which expect to flow a bit of inflation picking up last month, largely due to an increase in gas prices. the ceo of virgin atlantic is warning of a long-term hit to business travel. he tells the financial times that he expects corporate travel will be 20% lower over the next two years compared with pre-pandemic levels. and he questions whether business class will ever completely recover. airlines have reported strong demand for leisure trips, but there is concern the industry will lose some of the lucrative business customers forever due

to remote working and business technology like zoom, slack and teams. they make business travel accounts for about 75% of revenue on some flights, so that would be a big hit for the airlines. meanwhile, apple reportedly developing a new device that combines parts of apple tv with a home speaker and camera for video calls. if that sounds familiar, apple might be looking to catch up. they're working on a smart speaker with a visual similar to the hub. they would likely have hardware to fill a variety of roles, including playing games, streaming video and music, voice assistance and video calling. apple has not updated its smarthome products since 2017. those are the latest headlines from cnbc. sierra and laura, back over to you. i think they would have a long haul to catch up with the already established devices, because i'm not sure that i would switch over at this point.

>> no problem getting up early. we'll check with mike in just a moment. hey, kari, another nice day ahead? >> yes. in fact, it will be a little bit cooler than it was yesterday, but it's also going to be a little bit gusty as we go into this afternoon. let's get you started with a look at the commute in the tri-valley and it's already going out there. we'll be in the upper 50s at 11:00 and it's going to be a great day to enjoy more time outside, go to the park. let's head over to martinez and we will start this morning with some upper 40s here at 9:00. we're at 55 degrees if you're out walking then, or if you wait until a bit later, we'll see those temperatures in the 60s at 11:00. we've been talking about the winds picking up today. by late morning we'll start to see those winds at about 20 to 25 miles per hour, even a little bit more gusty in the tri-valley as we look at livermore. we are going to, at times, have

those breezy winds. but notice the direction of the wind coming in off the ocean, so that's what's going to help cool us off quite a bit for today, and at times those gusts in san francisco could reach 35 and close to 40 miles per hour, so those gusty winds start to taper off later on tonight as we go into the next couple of days, that low pressure that's keeping it gusty will be moving away. but still that high pressure remains and it's going to keep that pressure dry and actually gives a boost in our temperatures on monday. here's a look at the 7-day forecast. enjoy the cool weather with the ocean breeze, but one direction shifts. we'll see those temperatures getting a big boost in the 80s and even reaching the mid-80s by early next week. so we go from spring to summer all within the course of seven days. mike, how is it looking just going to work this morning is this. >> i don't have quite as much

variety as you do, kari, but let's take a look at that bay bridge shot. laura was talking about how beautiful it was, but i was watching very closely. those taillights do bunch up a little built around the bend. somewhere around the tower, there is a bridge crew blocking your left lane. you see the red and blue lights. they're getting ready to move a car that's there. this is approaching the tower getting over toward treasure island in the westbound direction on our maps. westbound off the toll plaza, though, and for the east freeway is an easy drive. a disabled vehicle southbound. it has moved off the freeway and your times for the highway are fast. we're following capitol police officer william "billy" evans will lay in honor at the capitol rotunda today.

the capitol police and member of congress will attend the viewing in the rotunda for officer evans' remains. president biden is expected there as well. officer evans was an 18-year veteran of the capitol hill police who was killed in the line of duty april 2nd when a man ran his car into a capitol barricade and got out of the car wielding a knife. a southern california lawmaker now looking for transparency when it comes to recall drives, meaning he wants recall subjects to be able to know who signed the petitions to remove them. the state measure would allow politicians to see the names of those seeking to oust them but not make them public. and it comes too late to apply to the newsom recall effort, but some argue it would discourage recall signing petitions for fear of retaliation. senator josh newman was recalled before running back a seat. he said it would better ensure voters were not being duped into signing. happening now, mosques in the bay area and around the world are observing the islamic
