5:00 am
at lowe's first annual springfest. home to any budget. home to any possibility. now at 5:00, the rush is on. every californian 16 years and up now eligible for a covid vaccine. overnight, many staying up late, slamming online appointment systems. this morning, our crews are fanned out across the bay area, testing all those sites as well. what they're finding out, just ahead, as "today in the bay" continues right now. good thursday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm washington. the change means 18 million more people immediately qualify to get that shot. however, the governor's office says that some of these people may have already received the vaccine due to their job or health condition, in either case will there be enough vaccines
5:01 am
for everyone? >> here's where the supply stands. california just received under 2 million doses of moderna and pfizer vaccines this week. next week, the state will receive 1.8 million doses. but for now, it may be tough to still book that appointment. of course, the appointment scheduling process is also changing. >> let's turn now to consumer investigator chris chmura with some strategies to help you grab your appointment as soon as possible. >> let's start with the state's website. myturn.ca.gov. the department of health says you don't have to register or prove eligibility. you can just start searching for an appointment. we found if you do a little more digging, you can find other available sites or open appointments. here's where to dig. start with your county's public health office and other counties, too. they might have information about mass vaccination sites. we searched santa clara's website and found lots of open
5:02 am
shots in gilroy, appointments we did not see on the state website. so checking with public health offices is key. you can also search pharmacy websites, they're getting more doses and adding more appointments, too. >> our goal is to be in every store. >> the federal government sends see vass supply notifications. see vass applies what's called a social vulnerability index and selects locations and updates its appointment system. cvs says it does that regularly but we saw the biggest batches of appointments open each night, overnight, generally around 1:00 a.m. people grabbed them fast so you might have to stay up late or get up early to grab one. >> we absolutely are encouraging everyone to check regularly and not to feel defeated or feel like there's no vaccine left. >> walgreens says it updates inventory weekly but wouldn't tell us what day. one message we've heard loud and clear is pharmacies do not accept walk-ins. >> we are actually not allowing anyone to come into the stores and recommending that people don't do that. >> you must have an appointment
5:03 am
to get a covid-19 vaccine at a pharmacy. that being said, consider calling nearby pharmacies to see if they're keeping a local standby list for no shows or leftover vaccine. you don't get much notice but you might get seen much faster. it worked for my colleague arlen fernandez at telemundo 48 responde. >> try owhat i did and other people did, call local pharmacies and see if they can put on a waiting list. it was worth my time. >> if you get the mderna or pfizer vaccine you'll need a second shot. ask the nurses at the first appointment to set your second appointment. side note if you travel a long distance toet get your first shot you don't have to travel back to the same location to get your second. good luck. when we learn more, we'll have it for you right here. let's continue our team coverage on the open eligibility.
5:04 am
>> "today in the bay's" reporter cierra johnson is live in burlingame this morning to explain why some are turning to specialized facebook groups trying to land that coveted shot, sierra. >> reporter: yes, good morning, marcus and laura. i had a chance to speak with two administrators of a facebook group, san francisco covid-19 vaccine help. one of the pieces of advice they offered to spread a wide net, use multiple resources to try to secure your vaccine. right now i have the state myturn website and cvs as well as walgreens. their facebook page boasts more than 5,700 folks trying to find a vaccine and offering advice on how successful they were. the page is updated frequently about the openings in san francisco as well as the surrounding area and group members are encouraged to share any bits or tips or tidbits
5:05 am
they've learned along the way. both women say it has been an honor to help folks and they offer a little bit more advice as well. one of the other pieces of advice both of the women offer is if you see a vaccine to take it. don't assume it will still be there when you come back. so if you're on the walgreens site, you see an open appointment, try to get it as early as you can. she said oftentimes folks have to register and when you come back, the appointment is gone, so in addition to casting a wide net, grab an appointment if it works with your availability and get it as early as you can. i'll be out here all morning checking the website and offering more bits of information from the women from ebook page. one more piece of advice, join a facebook page and join several of them, because something that may be posted to one website may not be posted to another social media page. we're live in millbrae, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> it looks like these days everyone is looking for advice and teaming together saying go here, do this, grab that.
5:06 am
so we'll see what we can get. thanks a lot, cierra. more details look at where the vaccination rate stands so far. just under 40% of adults in california have received at least one shot. 23% of adults are fully vaccinated. >> be sure to stay with "today in the bay," and our team throughout the morning for the updates. also, make sure you follow us on social media, we're there posting about any of those vaccine appointments that we find, as well as sharing helpful tips and links and tweet or even tag us if you need some help or we'll find an appointment that you are constantly checking on our social media. another large bay area school district struggling with distance learning about to welcome its children back into the classroom. alum rock schools in san jose were lagging due largely to funding issues. financial issue for the district, the superintendent told us about a month ago that she needed $9 million to reopen safely. she got about a third of that and later on this morning, we're going to be able to tour one of the schools to see how that money was spent. the district, which serves more than 11,000 students and has 28 schools said it was really struggling to find the money it needed to even get kids back into the classrooms part-time. meanwhile, some of the wealthier districts like palo alto were already reopened. the governor expressed frustration yesterday, that some districts were late in reopening. >> we could do this safely, we know that. we know that. there's no substitute for that enrichment, that comes from being in school. >> reporter: alum rock returning just about one-third of its student body to the school we're

secure vaccine appointments across california, millions more now eligible to book shots, but a big overall question, will supply meet demand? the expert advice you need to know as "today in the bay" continues. >> a very good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. at the stroke of midnight, things changed and eligibility now opened to all californians over the age of 16. 16 and up and right now many people are hitting that refresh button on their browser hoping to snag one of those appointments. we have live team coverage this morning, first we go to "today in the bay's" bob redell keeping his eye on the state's revamped myturn page. are there any appointments available? >> reporter: unfortunately it doesn't appear there are many. myturn.ca website, i typed in zip codes for the south bay, peninsula, sf, the north bay and
5:32 am
i had no luck. that doesn't mean they're not there. i'm telling you i was not able to find them. when i entered addresses or zip codes for brentwood and livermore the eastern parts of alameda and contra costa county respectively, i did find plenty of appointments in stockton at the stockton arena. this is for this morning. here is 8:30, 8:45, 1:30 in the afternoon but i'm not exactly sure why -- my impression is you have to live in the eastern part of alameda or eastern contra costa county to get these appointments, but if you live in sf or maybe in the south bay, you can give it a shot as well, it just did not pop up for me. yesterday the stanford covid-19 clinic in emeryville. one woman drove all the way from san jose to emeryville to get her shot. >> i'm very relieved. i didn't think i would get it this early. >> i feel relieved. you know, it's kind of an emotional thing to decide to get one and i'm glad i did.
5:33 am
>> i'm happy to have the first and can't wait to get the second over with. >> reporter: santa clara county just received 300,000 doses from the federal government. people snapped up those appointments almost immediately, and san mateo county, there's a shortfall this week of about 5,000 doses due to the johnson & johnson freeze and a relatively small shipment from the state because of the two factors right there. the health department there suggests people on the peninsula check out large medical groups like stanford or kaiser, or pharmacies for availability. reporting live, bob redell "today in the bay." >> bob, during the commercial breaks i've been jumping online as well. going to vaccinefinder.org gives you hope there are some appointments out there but looks like as you were saying as well it took me to a cvs site but lists every availability in the entire state of california, but it kind of shows you might have to drive to madeira or king
5:34 am
city, maybe you want to take a trip to the central coast arroyo grande. a lot of people would have to travel if they want to get an appointment right now. >> and on the cvs website we saw an availability in brentwood, clicked on it, and it took you to the stockton arena. my daughter got her shot at the stockton arena on sunday, because she was eligible, so there are definitely appointments available. i just don't owe know what the criteria is because we don't live in the central valley. we live in eastern alameda county and we were eligible to go there. >> you are eligible, chris chmura went to bakersfield. there's some in taleri, so maybe time to see different parts of our state. i see a road trip to bakersfield maybe in the future. thanks, bob. >> wow, yes. okay, look, so we want to bring in consumer investigator chris chmura now because i actually spoke to him to try to find out tricks to help you find
5:35 am
the vaccines. okay, chris, a lot of people looking for convenient and easy way for vaccine appointments. do you have tips or tricks? >> good morning, marcus. the key is to search everywhere you can. here's where we've been searching. first the state's official website myturn.ca.gov. if you don't find any appointments there, don't give up. just move on. look to see if your local public health office has any open slots or information about mass vaccine sites. check if w your health plan, lots of people online reported good success with that route. finally check with the big pharmacy companies and consider doing your search overnight. we noticed the number of available appointments at cvs was greatest at 1:00 a.m. costco just added more locations but it's been offering the one-shot johnson & johnson vaccine. that's on hold. so it might be even more
5:36 am
difficult to find appointments there. now, speaking of finding appointments, local might be an issue but we've seen wide open availability outside the bay area. >> speaking of outside the bay area, a lot of people are talking about driving long distance to get that shot. chris, you went to bakersfield. how far does one have to go to get this shot? >> i guess it depends on how quickly you want to get a shot. if you don't want to wait, you might find some open same-day appointments in the central valley or mass vaccination sites that will take walk-ups, that's what my wife and i did, a walk-up mass vaccination site, no waiting, just eight hours of driving because they opened up availability. we found it by looking at public health websites, county by county, until we found a mass vaccine clinish that didn't
5:37 am
require an appointment. in and out in an hour. >> you see online different versions, one is better than the other. can you choose the vaccine that you want to get? >> yes and no. some clinics and pharmacies say you'll get whatever they have on hand. some pharmacies have been giving customers an option during the appointment setting process. the johnson & johnson vaccine once it resumes or the two-dose pfizer or moderna shot. >> if you get the vaccine, the two-dose vaccine you need the second appointment for that one. so is it going to be difficult to book that one after you get your first shot? >> it might be. before you leave the clinic that's giving you your first dose, ask them to set your second appointment. if they won't or can't, you'll likely have to hunt again, and that's what happened to me. we didn't get a second shot set up so we later contacted the health system that ran our clinic, it made an appointment closer to home, thankfully. the health plan rep. said they could see availability about a month out but pharmacies are only publicly sharing a few days out. so as more and more people are getting shot one, there's going to be more competition for shot two so i'd recommend checking occasionally or often after your first dose to see what's available for your second. if we see changes or hacks to
5:38 am
help you with that process, we'll let you know. >> never thought with getting the second shot having to search again. good to know, thanks, chris. >> you're welcome. >> certainly some helpful information. from your vaccine hunting to what to do with your vaccine card, our consumer investigator chris chmura has those tips for you as part of his how-to series. find them on our streaming platforms, website or youtube channel. look for our how-to playlist. s.w.a.t. teams surrounding a home in connection with a shooting near san jose. a suspect is believed to be barricaded inside right now. it's all in connection with a shooting that happened about 12 hours ago not too far from aloni middle school. one person was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. a section of north fourth street remains closed right now. >> consideration of demanding that mayor foppoli resign as elected at-large mayor of the
