in minneapolis for closing arguments in the derek chauvin trial as "today in the bay" starts right now. a very good monday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. let's get a look at that weekday forecast for our monday. meteorologist kari hall has a look at that. >> good morning, so we're getting you started with a look at your commute from the east bay. let's check out martinez. we'll start out with some low 50s here and it's going to be another beautiful, sunny day but not as warm as yesterday. let's go through some of these temperatures, very quickly here, as we go toward noon, we'll see some of those upper 60s and low 70s, but not as many 80s inland. we'll talk about our cooling trend and that chance of rain in the forecast, that's coming uhm. mike, any problems for early morning commuters? >> not right now but i heard they are with the rain we'll come back to you. back to the maps i see green

sensors. smaller incidents south bay milpitas no big deal a crash clearing for a while in san mateo. bay bridge an easy drive and coming out of contra costa county in the north bay, no delays. back to you. breaking news this morning, we have liftoff the first time today. first powered flight on another planet. these are the pictures that we see right now and this, that new video from inside as they're cheering on in the mission command center as it all happened. but that picture is so cool, they were able to see the ingenuity actually lifting off there and the mars rover actually capturing that photo for us, that touchdown on mars earlier this month after disconnecting from the perseverance rover but certainly a great day for out of space exploration. >> very exciting. happening today, thousands of bay area kids heading back into the classroom for in-person learning this morning in

oakland. their return comes despite an ongoing impasse between teachers and the district. students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in oakland unified's phase two, joining younger students already back in class. the district is reassuring parents the stalled negotiations will not affect returning students. some issues still have yet to be resolved, including agreements on safe reopening accommodations and work schedules. we reached out for an update on the talks but so far haven't heard back. in san jose, the east side union high school district is expected to welcome back all of its students, anyone who is still concerned about returning in person is still able to learn remotely. in the meantime, in the east bay, all west contra costa unified campuses also reopened today. the district plans to implement hybrid learning plans combining in-person and distance learning with in-person support opportunities available for students monday through wednesday. certainly been a headache for people trying to get that covid vaccine appointment as well. it's so coveted but now there's a little light at the end of the

tunnel. new appointments are opening up across the bay area. >> and with that good news comes some concern, this is a new trend that really could signal a potential fourth wave. here is "today in the bay's" sergio quintana with more. >> reporter: finding appointments for shots is still a bit of a challenge for some parts of the bay area, but there are plenty to be found if you're willing to do some hunting and driving. public officials like san francisco supervisor matt haney have been taking to social media this week to understand direct people to sites like the stanford vaccine clinic in emeryville. >> if you login to the myturn.ca.gov website you'll see the oakland coliseum site has lots of appointments open for monday, tuesday, wednesday and thursday. >> it seems like we are on track to get most californians vaccinated by probably the middl is also doing good when it comes to inf infections have remained pretty flat for the last two weeks. still, public health experts would like to see them decline, but there is some concern with

infections in other parts of the country. >> we're also seeing that the growing trend of young, healthy, unvaccinated people, because they're not vaccinated yet, people are among some of the sickest especially in michigan. >> reporter: and in colorado this weekend, a warning about a rise in infection and positivity rates there. >> we are seeing what appears to be the beginning of a fourth wave of covid-19 in colorado. >> reporter: according to the cdc, there's a gap when it comes to vaccine distribution across the country. states like california and others in dark blue on this map are doing well with shots in arms. lighter blue states are falling behind, reminders that more needs to be done to pull out of this pandemic. sergio quintana, "nbc bay area news." this vaccine appointments are being released in santa clara county. those appointments are for anyone 16 and older who live or work in santa clara county. if this applies to you, you are urged to make an appointment at

sccfreevax.org. among those appointments released are 10,000 for next week. a big turn in the race to vaccinate. the cdc announcingose of the covid-19 vaccine, that translates to almost 131 million people. here in california more than 25.5 million have been administered, more than half of the state's population. the peninsula doing quite well when it comes to the number of people vaccinated fully. you can see it here in green. 65% in san mateo county. marin approaching the 50% mark. most of the region in the mid-30s to the 40s. santa clara lagging a bit, just 31% of people in that county are fully vaccinated. if you are one of the people st a vaccine appointment we're trying to help. consumer investigator chris chmura is vaccine hunting, has

pets being injured, including the death of one child in march. peloton claims the notice is inaccurate and misleading and it's possible to use the treadmill as long as people follow instructions that say keep kids and pets away at all times. reports say the commission recommended recalling the tread plus and had been negotiating the phrasing with the wording and the warning with peloton for the past week. facebook plans to take on clubhouse, and is expected to announce a series of new products today. vox reports they include an audio only version of its rooms. the conferencing product facebook launched last year and an app similar to clubhouse let people listen to or interact with speakers on a virtual stage. clubhouse surged in popularity after elon musk and mark zuckerberg. it has 10 million active users.

highs reaching into the low 80s for the tri-valley and livermore 83 degrees in concord. san francisco is going to be cooler, 66 degrees and 76 degrees in san jose. the warmth continues in the north bay with ukiah reaching 85 degrees. it's still warm today but we get much more of an motion breeze and our natural air conditioning starting tomorrow. toward the end of the week the low dropping in. by the time they get here, they dry out. that's different about this it has the potential to tap into tropical moisture from a typhoon well to the west. this could boost the amount of moisture that comes into northern california and maybe bring us a better chance of rain. we'll be watching this very c closely even though the week is dry. we were looking to get rain tomorrow and we're going to see our temperatures cooling off for

the weekend into the 60s. so of course we'll have more updates on that. mike, what is the update on the morning commute? >> kari it's moving smoothly. judging by the big view the sensors look green all over the map. a couple of important spots. over her a little red squiggle , a closure for 84 coming through the niles canyon area overnight through the end of this week into next week. you have to use the reroute 680 and overnight through the 24th looking toward boulder canyon road the exit is closed for one lane because of a crash but the other lane is open. better news and the rest of contra costa county and in order smoothly before the bay bridge and related bridges. in san francisco, activists and supporters marched along the great highway in support of the

asian-american and pacific islander community over the weekend. this is because of recent attack against members of those communities across the bay area and the nation. "today in the bay's" christie smith has more. >> we are here today. this is a historic moment of reckoning on racism and violence against asian-american. >> reporter: the mage was clear along the upper great highway. >> to support our asian communities that have been struggling under the cess clags of violent crime locally in san francisco and nationally. >> reporter: the call for safety and solidarity in effort with community, faith and labor groups. there were booths with resources. scott yen came out with his family. >> it's really just about being with my kids and having them have pride. >> reporter: he says attacks against seniors really hit home. many say it's important to keep showing up.

months for entering a restricted burn area. he managed to take this of his location, another man able to determine where he was helping those crews track him down. campeon says he did not see any warning signs that that area was restricted. investigators believe a tangled parachute led to an experienced skydiver falling to her death over the weekend in the central valley. her chute never fully deployed saturday. at this skydive lodi parachute center. in t marks at least nine deaths there since 2006, in one case, the owner paid out more than $40 million to the family of a young tandem jumper who died in a fall with an uncertified instructor in 2016. when we return, we're going to turn to sports and the continuing impact from covid on the games. the warriors getting ready to welcome back fans to the chase center for the first time in

the oakland a's suddenly finding themselves on a big roll. they've now won eight straight games after yesterday's walk-off win against detroit. it stops for now. today's game at the coliseum against minnesota is postponed after the twins with four team members including two players test positive for covid. tomorrow's game still up in the air but the league will make an announcement later today. the warriors are in the middle of a road trip. when they return home this week, it will be a special homecoming. for the first time in more than a year fans will return to friday night's game against decenter. roughly 6,000 people will be allowed, but before getting in, they must be fully vaccinated or have proof of a negative covid test. let the games begin. expanding vaccine eligibility nationwide. next on "today in the bay" a live look from washington on the push the biden administration is
