"today in the bay" starts right now. a very good tuesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike is keeping an eye on the roads but first a start with meteorologist kari hall with a look at the forecast for us on this tuesday. >> good morning. and yes, we're starting out with a mostly clear sky, another cool morning. here is a live look out there in walnut creek with a temperature of 52 degrees, not bad at all. our sky clearing as we go into today and a little bit cooler compared to yesterday. that cooling trend continues as we get a stronger ocean breeze and san jose only reach the mid-60s but we'll see mid-70s for concord and santa rosa. we'll look to more changes in our forecast, coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking like for our early morning commuters? >> it's looking like it's early.

it's light, the big view of the bay, green sensors except for highway 84 cutting through between basically niles canyon and sunol, the windy part. use 068 in mission, state route 238 until just before 5:00 should be clearing in the next 15 to 20 minutes perhaps and go on again overnight and the rest of the week. no problems toward the bay bridge. contra costa early, easy start. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 4:32. the jury in the derek chauvin trial preparing to enter their first full day of deliberations. all eyes remain fixed on the courtroom where 12 men and women are tasked with determining the guilt or innocence of the former officer charged in the death of george floyd. >> unrest hitting minneapolis for yet another night as

businesses here in the bay area are boarded up ahead of the murder. here's "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd. >> we are cautiously optimistic. >> reporter: brian dixon, manager of callavera restaurant in downtown oakland says being optimistic is a healthier state of mind but being cautious has become his reality. >> we had our windows broken out friday night. we are a black-owned business, fully supportive of the protests themselves and the message, but it hurts to have physical damage done. >> reporter: tanya hollands says she's not sure if the black-owned business sign in her window kept her restaurant from being damaged. >> but i do understand the anger and the frustration, because sometimes we have to speak louder just to be heard. so that's a way of speaking loud. >> reporter: on friday, windows were shattered, cars destroyed at a dealership. a police officer and civilians hurt by rocks and bottles, close to 300 people angry about men of color being shot and killed by

police. businesses in san francisco are not taking any chances. they are boarding up, too, while the police department cancels days off for officers as the nation waits for a verdict in the chauvin trial. after nearly six hours of closing arguments, the seven men and five women on the jury began considering charges against the former minneapolis police officer in connection with the death of george floyd. deliberations ended at 6:00 p.m. our time, without verdicts on any of the counts and will resume despite the outcome. oakland mayor libby schaaf is calling for calm. >> we are running various scenarios to prepare for the announcement of the derek chauvin verdict. we're very hopeful that justice will be done.

>> ellen kleitsburg says a guilty verdict would be the first step toward justice. but -- >> if they don't achieve a conviction in this case i think the world and all of us need to wonder what does a police officer have to do before he will be held accountable for the violence that he bestows on an unarmed human. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." more details for you even before a verdict, there is already talk of an appeal. comments by congresswoman maxine waters could provide grounds for an appeal for chauvin's defense team. over the weekend the southern california congresswoman urged protesters in minnesota to get more confrontational if chauvin was not convicted. chauvin's lawyer asked the judge to declare a mistrial over waters' statements arguing she prejudiced the jury. the judge denied that request but did say waters' comments could be grounds for the defense to appeal a guilty verdict. congressman kevin mccarthy

tweeted that he would introduce a resolution in the house to censure waters for her comments. stay with us for continuing coverage on the derek chauvin murder trial. when the jury reaches a verdict nbc news will break in with a special report. 4:35, seemingly we are turning the corner in the race to vaccinate. thousands of appointments have opened in the bay area. the oakland coliseum and leeveigh's stadium among those locations with those open slots. despite the progress, how close are we to herd immunity? "today in the bay's" ian cull has some answers. >> reporter: tonight and throughout the day, vaccine appointments were open for the taking. you could even book one tomorrow at the oakland coliseum and multiple south bay sites like levi's stadium. 4,000 doses were injected today. the county expects to double that number the rest of the week and it says demand is not slowing down. every appointment is getting filled. >> the challenge of getting an

appointment hopeful live has passed. >> reporter: more than half of california 16 and up has at least one covid vaccine shot. 31% is fully vaccinated. dr. george rutherford says we still have a ways to go for herd immunity. >> well over 50%, most likely over 60% or 70% until we really are going to see the vaccine levels themselves stop transmission. >> reporter: he says the vaccine progression of nearly 1 million shots in californian arms every three days should get us there. >> i think the governor has asked several of us close to herd immunity by june 15th and that would include adolescents assuming that fda authorizes the pfizer vaccine down to 12 years of's a not unrealistic goal. >> reporter: i other regions around the country,

and netflix tonight. united airlines reporting a $1.4 billion loss in the first quarter of the year, as business travel simply remains weak. it was slightly worse than wall street expected. bookings are rising for united ahead of the peak summer vacation season and expects the trend grow stronger as more get vaccinated. united, americans and delta depend on business and international travelers from revenue and profit and no one is sure when those customers will come back. apple is hosting its first virtual event of the year today. analysts expecting some new ipads and maybe new color versions of the imac. apple could show off air tags which are coin-sized tracking devices you can slap on anything you want like a phone or luggage and track it to make sure it doesn't get lost. it could also be hints about the new airpod 3 wireless ear buds

that may be launched in a separate event this summer. with your cnbc morning report, i'm brian sullivan. >> thanks, brian. now to a live look at sfo this morning. the u.s. state department adding more countries to its do not travel list. listen up, here. it's boosting its guidance to include 80% of the counties worldwide due to the covid-19 pandemic. there are 34 countries on the list, chad, kosovo, kenya, brazil, argentina and haiti. getting to 80% would mean an additional nearly 130 countries added. if highis in your travel plans, you're not alone. since october of last year, the state has seen close to 2.5 million travelers through its safe travels hawaii program. according to sf gate, almost 75% were visitors to the islands. tourists who participate must agree to a ten-day mandatory quarantine or must present a negative covid-19 test taken 72

good morning. it is 4:48. a live look out at oakland, a little dark in some of the places but hey, the lights are shining and it is time to go -- look at the car on the road there. uh-oh, that means we have to turn to mike inouye and look at what traffic is looking like across the bay area. >> thank goodness you spotted that car, one fewer cars i have to watch for. phew! let's look at the rest of the bay area, nine counties, as we look at the roadways, we see what we'd expect, the green sensors. over on the peninsula, i had my eye north of san mateo, southbound 101 coming out of millbrae and burlingame a crash reported. the chp reports three lanes are blocked but you see no slowing on the sensors, this has been there since before the commercial break so almost ten minutes total south of sfo. i'll say the lanes are probably clear but watch it as you pass south of sfo and head down the peninsula. over on the east bay looking forward highway 84, still closed for the overnight roadwork, as

the squiggly part, the arrows show you alternate south 680 north mission or vice verse is a, depending if you're coming in or out of fremont and niles from the sunol area. looking farther over, where we expect to see the slowing and we have that out of the altamont pass for west 580, where the chicklets are slow, just past the merge from 205 and 580 and clearing before you get to greenville, arrow at the top of the screen is vasco coming out of brentwood, byron, discovery bay, just about 17, 18, under 20 minutes from marsh creek road to 580, what folks in the area like to see, the bottom number right here. vasco road itself 18 minutes as we talked about, and then highway 4, easy drive out of antioch from the antioch bridge over to 242 and headed through concord. no problems for contra costa county as far as the drive goes. early commute at the top of the screen, highway 4 through rodeo and down the east shore freeway, and the arrow shows you over there the bay bridge toll plaza, which is an easy drive right now, no backup there or over

across the north bay as we look at san rafael and a smooth flow of traffic. zooming out, there's one bit of construction as you come into petaluma, not a major issue. highway 101 moves smoothly as does the rest of the north bay and things are calm as far as the breezes go but much more detailed report, let's check with kari. >> good morning. get ready for some cooler temperatures and breezy winds today. take a look at our highs for this afternoon, we'll reach up to 67 degrees in oakland. 59 in san francisco and some low 70s in martinez. we'll reach into the upper 60s in livermore, as those winds pick up later today. as we go through the forecast, we do have a lot of changes headed our way. we are going to see still some high pressure and some dry weather continuing as we go into the next few days, and then as we go into the weekend, we'll be watching a couple of storm systems still well to the west of us, but as it moves in, it will bring in some rain chances, starting out for the weekend on sunday, and then there could be another chance of rain right

behind that, as we are seeing a change in our weather pattern so some much needed rain a possibility for us as our temperatures reach into the upper 70s for the middle of the week. it's going to be warm but check out how much cooler it will be this weekend. only reaching into the low 60s and of course once again we'll be watching out for those rain chances. i'll have another update coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks so, kari. 4:52. condolences are pouring in from political leaders across the country after the death of former vice president walter mondale. he served as vice president under jimmy carter. he also made a presidential run in 1984. he made history by asking a woman, geraldine ferraro to be his running mate. mondle lost to ronald reagan, former senator, ambassador and minnesota attorney general. mondale was 93-year-old. vice president harris tweeted

steph and his younger brother seth embrace before last night's game. seth plays for the 76ers, who down the stretch were simply living in steph's world. with the game on the line, steph took over, hitting several key three-pointers in the final minutes finishing with 49 points. the warriors ended up beating the 76ers 107-96. there's some brotherly love there. also last night the san francisco giants were taking on the philadelphia phillies. the giants won, the game 2-0 on this home run by brandon belt. the real story, an adult fan scrambling to try to get that ball there, goes over one of the rows and landed straight on his backside. insult to injury, he didn't end up getting the ball. yeah. we'll be right back.
