in the bay area. a sigh of relief for many as it was an emotional journey to get to this verdict, why they say the fight for change is still not over. "today in the bay" begins right now. >> good tuesday morning -- wednesday morning it is. thanks so much for joining us. >> ah-ha. >> on "today in the bay," i'm marcus washington. >> good gosh you're right, it's wednesday, i'm laura garcia. let's get a look at the wednesday morning forecast with meteorologist kari hall. good morning to you. >> good morning. it was so windy at times yesterday afternoon, but the wind starting to calm down but you may find a breeze picking up every now and then this morning, as we head out in walnut creek, right now it's 52 degrees. our sky stays clear and it's going to be another really beautiful day. take a look at all of our highs around our microclimates in the bay area. temperatures in the low 70s in santa rosa. also some low 70s for the south bay and the tri-valley. we'll talk about some of that rain in the weekend forecast

coming up. mike, how is the commute looking? >> right now it's very light around the bay. we'll take a live look in the north bay. san rafael southbound 101 with the headlights sparsely populated here and we're talking about this because just south of there on the map i marked a crash blocking two of the four lanes you see. now these cars were able to get by single file and the live shot we had and that's why there's no slowing getting closer toward the split with 580 toward the richmond-san rafael bridge if you head toward contra costa county. everything smooth over there but still call out the winding section of 84 with the closure. we'll talk about that more coming up. back to you. this morning, former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin is in jail awaiting sentencing in a minnesota jail. yesterday a jury convicted him of all three counts of murder and manslaughter in the death of george floyd. >> nbc news's chris pollone has more on the reaction to what many call a bittersweet victory.

>> reporter: in minneapolis people gathered late into the night to reflect. ♪♪ the gathering more muted, more solemn than the raw release of emotion outside the courthouse when the verdict became known. bursts of joy. >> it was just a beautiful moment when we finally got to see somebody get at inch of justice. >> reporter: and relief. for george floyd's family, the quest for justice personal. >> i just miss him so much. i'm so hurt right now, god but i'm so happy. >> today we are able to breathe again. >> reporter: the jury, seven women and five men deliberated just ten hours before convicting former minneapolis police officer derek chauvin on all three counts. >> as to counsel one unintentional second-degree murder while committing a felony find the defendant guilty. >> reporter: chauvin led away in handcuffs to await sentencing as spontaneous celebrations broke out across the country. for some a prayer answered, notend anding they say but a step forward. >> we got to keep fighting.

i'm going to put up a fight every day because i'm not just fighting for george anymore. i'm fighting for everybody around this world. >> reporter: a fight for accountability and a fight for equality in the eyes of the law. chris pollone, nbc news, minneapolis. it was a quiet night in the bay area, feeling of calm here and across the country. >> "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd has more from oakland on what could be a moment in racial justice and policing. >> reporter: in downtown oakland, the only people gathering are police, the verdict in the derek chauvin trial leaving behind a blanket of relief. that same relief was felt at liberation park in east oakland. >> i feel justice is served but it's not one of those things where you can celebrate. >> reporter: a processing moment for the people here to digest that a former minneapolis police officer was found guilty on three counts of murdering a black man.

>> while we get excited, i temper my emotions because i know it's just a matter of time before this same thing repeats itself and the outcome won't be the same. >> we're still in the back of daunte wright and taser taser, so this is not a victory. this is a wake-up call. >> reporter: a wake-up call even though justice was served in this case. >> we the jury in the above-entitled matter as to count one, unintentional second-degree murder while committing a felony find the defendant guilty. >> reporter: guilty on this count, and two others, which include third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter against derek chauvin for killing george floyd. some members of floyd's family with an emotional reaction from their home in houston. >> yes! >> reporter: emotions for this family, because of what history has shown, according to civil rights attorneys john burris. >> rodney king was a start. george floyd was sort of the end of that example.

>> george floyd resounds because it was on video, so was oscar grant's and so was rodney king's, right, and we saw some reform after rodney king, and we're pretty much in the post oscar grant moment right now. >> reporter: that moment according to grant's uncle, cephus johnson, needs to bring about change. >> we need to move forward to really bring about some changes starting policing and use of force. >> reporter: history has shown those changes are happening slowly, as we see black men and women like breonna taylor being killed or beaten by police. for many people, today's verdict was like a wake-up call. professor james taylor sees this moment as hope for the future. >> the entire american system at least minnesota was on trial and it worked very well this time. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." >> the verdict is triggering mixed emotions for south bay families affected by police violence.

many gathered outside of san jose city hall. the group was in contact leading up to the decision, many expressing anxiousness, some feeling relief. >> very encouraging. i mean it's just one. it's just one but maybe it's a start. >> today's verdict was actually some glimpse of hope for anybody that's gone through what we've gone through, so it's a glimpse of hope and it proves that if you keep pushing, things can change. >> the group is part of a silicon valley de bug an organization impacted families pushing for police reform, for reform. many say they hope more cases like derek chauvin's are able to also be decided by a jury. the san francisco, san jose and los angeles police unions released a joint statement on the verdict calling it ""just." "although the verdict will not bring george floyd back, this tragedy provides all of us in law enforcement an opportunity to improve how our nation is

policed and our three police unions are committed to enacting reforms that will keep all americans safe." it's 4:37 this morning. time to take a look outside and what we can expect for the day. meteorologist kari hall of course has been tracking those numbers and temperatures for us, kari. we've got rain coming later in the week but certainly what are we expecting today? >> well yeah. it was, we're still in with the nice dry weather for now, but it's been pretty windy out there. i wanted to show you some high wind gusts that we have from the past 24 hours, and take a look at some of these numbers. san francisco had a wind gust of 58 yesterday afternoon and it was pretty gusty elsewhere, about 20 to 35-mile-per-hour winds, so we are still breezy this morning, but the winds will start to calm down and as you get ready to head out the door in lafayette, we'll see our temperatures in the upper 40s and then leading into the upper 50s by 10:00. we'll talk about that rain in the weekend forecast coming up. mike, how is the commute rolling

good wednesday morning. it is 4:41 and as you make plans for the day, make sure you're enjoying more time outside. let's check out fremont in the east bay, where we start out with temperatures at 8:00 in the low 50s. you can see that if you're heading out for lunch at that time, it's going to be at about 64 degrees and continuing to warm up this afternoon. we will talk about that rain in the forecast as well as the

airlines falling more than 8% and focus today earnings from verizon and chipotle. instagram is adding new features to prevent harassment and direct messages. you'll now have the option to not just block an individual user but also preemptively block any new accounts they may create. this could help those who are repeatedly targeted by the same people or who don't want that person to be able to find them with a new account. instagram is also adding a tool to prevent abuse in message requests separate inbox for messages from people you don't already follow. filter will allow to you automatically hide requests that contain offensive phrases, words or emojis. americans are planning to take a summer vacation maybe more than one. a new survey shows 50% of adults say they'll go on vacation at least once this summer. they say they're interested in taking a road trip and many plan to spend more than a thousand bucks. popular activities include

welcome to wednesday morning a live look outside over the biggest city in the bay area san jose this morning. waiting for the sun's arrival. we'll check in with mike in a bit. he's got a look at that morning commute. kari has a look at our forecast for today. another nice one? >> yes, absolutely. yesterday it got pretty windy but today the wind will gradually start to calm down. let's get a live look in walnut creek, starting out clear and crisp, with a lot of clear skies and temperatures that will start to warm up. beautiful day for a hike. if you're in the peninsula, expect those temperatures in the upper 40s to start a few clouds early this morning, low 50s at 8:00, and then at 10:00 we're at 56 degrees, making it into the mid-60s for today. so that's going to be comfortable as well as what

we'll see elsewhere around the bay area, as our temperatures reach up to 75, it's going to be a little bit warmer in some of those inland spots like antioch, as well as ukiah today with santa rosa reaching 71. also 71 in san jose, palo alto reaching 70 degrees and 60 in san francisco. let's talk about this rain we've all been talking about it and watching every run of the computer models. it shows that low moving in as we head toward sunday and moves on through. another one is behind that but it looks like the rain stays to the north. one chance of rain in the forecast. we could see decent rainfall totals and this could change between now and then but it is showing an inch of rain and for parts of the north bay that's not going to help us out too much with the drought but it will put the fire season at bay ands with' look at the sierra the potential of check this out,

ten inches of snow in kingvale. that could prolong our ski season and provide a little more water storage for the dry summer months as we look at our temperatures, much cooler for sunday into monday as that rain moves in. we'll keep you updated. how is it looking for the commute, mike? >> it's looking pretty calm but i need to call out this issue in the tri-valley. let's show folks the big map, because you're going to like what you traditionally see as that green sensor read around the bay. we zoom in toward fremont and sunol the cut through highway 84 the windy cut-through is closed overnight. should be opening in the next few minutes, the arrows show you both directions closed for the roadwork, same thing tonight and tomorrow night. looking at 680 to mission boulevard as your alternate. volume builds for 84 and 580 but no problems to the major feeder routes like vasco and highway 4 moving at speed.

back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. a danville police officer involved in the shooting death of a homeless man last month now faces charges in the 2018 killing of an unarmed man according to the "east bay times." it happened during a slow speed chase. andrew hall was a contra costa deputy when he shot and killed latimer arboletta as the newark man drove towards him. last month hall, now a danville police officer, shot and killed tyrell wilson. wilson was holding a knife at the time but cell phone video shows him stepping back before he was shot. hall is currently on administrative leave. wilson's family has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the danville police department. continuing coverage now of the reaction to the derek chauvin verdict. activists say comprehensive reform is what needs to happen next. "today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab has more. >> this is the first time i can recall in the nation's history where a police officer was

convicted due primarily to the testimony of other officers. >> reporter: for ladoris cordell a retired judge of california supreme cor court and former independent police auditor for san jose she believes chauvin's conviction relied heavily on testimony from officers and the minneapolis police chief himself, something she has not seen before. >> this is big, because now people around the country and particularly police officers can get the message that it's the right thing to do. >> reporter: change has been the cry of protests that swept the nation following george floyd's death and change has happened, in the form of new laws passed at the federal level by two dozen states and more than 100 cities. here in california, among half a dozen new laws is one that requires officers to be evaluated by a psychologist for potential bias. nevada now requires fellow officers to intervene if they witness unlawful use of force and new mexico now requires the use of body cameras.
