state are trying to bounce back as covid restrictions ease. the uptick in foot traffic some are seeing and the help on the way for those still struggling, as "today in the bay" starts right now. good wednesday morning to you. thanks for waking up early with us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike has an eye on the roads in a bit but first it is hump day. meteorologist kari hall has a look at that forecast for us. >> good morning, waking up headed out the door let's head to the east bay with a live look in walnut creek, and it's right now 52 degrees. a little bit warmer than it was yesterday at this time, and it will be a warmer afternoon. we can see how fast that warmup starts to happen, as we go toward 9:00, 10:00, 11:00 where we'll be in the low 70s which is warmer than we were yesterday. so we're looking at some highs reaching into the 80s in some of our inland valleys. san jose will reach 80, while santa rosa will see a high of 79

degrees. we'll talk about another warm spell in the forecast as well as some gusty winds, that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> looking pretty calm. some folks are getting started with the longer drive, concord, walnut creek, lafayette, moving smoothly. alameda county the closure, overnight all week again, miles canyon basically use 680 to mission to get around that in either direction headed out or into the fremont area. the rest of the bay pretty calm. send it right back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. the nation is waiting for president biden's first joint address to congress this evening. here is a live look at capitol hill where he's expected to highlight achievements in his first 100 days in office and push congress to take action on jobs and legislation to help families. their ballot when it comes to this year's special election to recall governor newsom. the date before that election not clear. city leaders are planning to possibly add races for city attorney and assessor. long time city attorney janice herrera announced plans to move into the public utilities commission but the confirmation process will take some time. now to the pandemic. for months we've been talking about injections. now the covid treatment is coming in the form of a pill. pfizer says its new drug could be available by the end of this year. it could dramatically change the landscape of how we battle this virus. "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney explains. >> reporter: pfizer's experimental oral drug to treat covid-19 at the first sign of illness is now being tested on healthy humans. the company's ceo making this bold prediction when it will be available to the public. >> if all goes well and we implement the same speed we did so far and we are and if

regulators do the same, and they are, i hope by the end of the year. >> reporter: it would be the second anti viral therapy for covid-19 joining remdesivir, given intravenously with symptoms. the new drug would be in a pill. >> someone comes in with covid, hadn't gotten vaccinated and don't feel well, this would be given as an oral agent, keep them out of the hospital and it would prevent hopefully getting sick with covid. >> reporter: this new drug is in a class of medicines called protease inhibitors which stop the virus from getting a protein it needs to replicate. dr. gandhi has seen what thisser this i can can do with hiv. >> anti virals for hiv targeted against these same proteins, revolutionized hiv. it turned it from something that had high morbidity and mortality to a completely manageable infection. >> reporter: the people we spoke to are in awe of the science and

open to this potential new treatment. >> if it prevents you from getting covid at all, compared to lying in the hospital, be on a ventilator, this is nothing, yes. i'll be totally open to it. no doubt in my mind. >> reporter: dr. gandhi reminds us the new treatment is only in the initial trials and far better than treatment is prevention, which is why she advises all of us to get the vaccine. in san francisco, terry mcsweeney, "nbc bay area news." another northern california county is moving to the less restrictive yellow tier. mendocino county just above sonoma being in the yellow tier means that bars that don't serve food with open at 25% capacity. indoor gyms, wineries, tasting rooms can open at 50% capacity, and outdoor live events are allowed at 67% capacity. marin in san francisco counties are likely to move into the yellow tier next week if they keep their case rates below 2 per 100,000 people and positivity rates below 2%.

a live look in san diego, where businesses bouncing back as the pandemic tapers off. it's not just from locals. merchants say visitors are starting to return in popular tourist areas adding to the boom. >> reporter: i do believe people are feeling a lot more relaxed, inside and outside, wherever they're going and making people happy and they want to come out and see color again and beauty. >> of course the reasons for the rebound are two-fold, with more people becoming fully vaccinated, cases are also down significantly from some of the peak numbers that we saw in san diego. starting today, small businesses across california can start applying for the final round of stimulus relief from the state. those qualifying businesses can receive between $5,000 and $25,000 in grants, part of $2 billion in new state money available. the businesses better act

let's check out how things are with dom. >> good morning. i am dominic chu here at cnbc global head quarters. wall street is set for a mostly lower open this morning, stocks ending flat yesterday ahead of several big earnings reports from the likes of microsoft and google's parent company, alphabet. the dow reversing a more than 100-point loss to close higher, boosted by strong data on consumer confidence, which showed the highest reading since before the virus pandemic. in focus for traders and investors today, the federal reserve wraps up a two-day policy meeting this afternoon. the fed is not expected to take any action on rates but may defend their policy to let inflation run hot. we also get earnings from boeing, ford, facebook and apple as well. starbucks says u.s. sales recovered from the pandemic. sales at downtown city locations are lagging those in the suburbs as many people have yet to return to the office. starbucks expects larger order

sizes to eventually drop off but the number of transactions to grow. the chain has been pushing mobile ordering and is increasing its to go options. and facebook and instagram are working on tools to help creators make more money. these include online shops so creators can sell items directly on the platform and get a cut of those sales of products they promote. social media companies are trying to spur the creation of more content to keep users engaged on their sites. twitter has also been testing new tools, including a super follow feature, giving people access to exclusive content for a fee, so social media trying to monetize all of us, that is your cnbc morning business report. marcus and laura, i don't know how much you guys buy online but i have been influenced a lot by those ads i see on places like instagram and facebook and twitter. >> yes, no kidding. one day if we want to buy dominic chu's tie, just there you go, you have it. >> merry christmas. >> and i get a cut.

starting out and as we take a look at where we are right now, we're about ten degrees warmer in napa so we look at some mostly upper 40s but we're already seeing some low 50s right now in oakland. as we go through this forecast, a lot of changes ahead. let's first start in the south bay, as we reach up to 80 in san jose. morgan hill will be a little bit warmer, reaching 83 degrees. for the east bay, we'll see some mid 80s in some spots as we head toward antioch. vallejo reaching 79 degrees and 75 today in hayward. going toward the coastline we still have upper 50s in half moon bay and you head over to san mateo and it's going to be 75 degrees, much warmer there and san francisco also feels a slight warmup, too, with mid-60s and the mission district our north bay highs reach up to 81 degrees in napa, and we'll see a high of 83 in clearlake. so with the 80s today, we'll do it all over again tomorrow, but at least it will be comfortable

for the giants game this evening, first pitch at 6:45 and we're at 61 degrees. it starts to cool off. the cooldown continues into the evening. if you're one of the lucky few, make sure you're wearing something nice and warm as always there at the ball park. but we are going to see still dry weather in our forecast, high pressure not budging as these storm systems pass to the north of here, but at times, when they do get very close by, we'll see our winds picking up and we'll have some of those gusty winds throughout the weekend. as we go through this seven-day forecast, we'll see some low 80s today and tomorrow, then some upper 70s for saturday, sunday and monday. notice that the temperatures only come down a few degrees so it's going to be some warm, spring afternoons headed our way, while san francisco will mostly see some mid-60s and really windy there especially for the weekend. mike, you've been watching the roads. anything new popping up? >> kari, i think not really new. overnight you get notifications new for me, is that there are some wires down and so the

roadway is closed here. highway 35 between bear creek and 17, just local through the area need to know about that and you also know the ways around there, a tougher drive. wires down, don't know when pg&e will take care of those. we're watching that. the freeways move nicely. one spot this squiggly spot on the right side is highway 84, still with the overnight roadwork, no delays reported. should be clear within the next 10 to 15 minutes cutting through niles canyon. use 680 and mission boulevard. contra costa county, the alameda county the longer drives timing them out, no delays vasco road or highway 4, drive toward concord. a massive covid outbreak could be lynched to a church in humboldt county. "sf gate" reports in the past two weeks the county reported more than 230 new cases. health leaders say the church in eureka had safety protocols in place but still some members got covid.

an investigation is still going on to pinpoint what caused the outbreak. as we move into fire season, the world's largest fire fighting plane might not be used to stop those flames. instead, it will be converted to fight the pandemic. so the company behind supertanker seen in this video here says it doesn't make enough money fighting wildfires in california and that the pandemic has created a greater need for freight aircraft that can deliver those ppes, vaccines, as well as other covid responses. so the global tanker can dump up to 19,000 gallons of water on flames or flame retardant down within six seconds. immunization campaigns are interrupted as health organizations focus on getting the population vaccinated against covid. united nations children's fund or unicef says the pandemic has interrupted the routine campaigns for measles and yellow fever. communities around the world are seeing the disparities without the routine campaigns. you can help, get the campaigns
