"today in the bay" starts now. good monday morning. brand new work week. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll get to the fire danger and the forecast in a moment. first we want to start with the commute. mike, how is it looking? >> first headlights on, folks, make sure they're working before you leave the house and get onto the road which with green sensors. good stuff south bay along the peninsula and east bay no problems. tri-valley you're at speed except for the altamont. right here northbound 101, just approaching the tiburon exit we have a crash, looks like everded north toward the san rafael area and coming out of concord no delays, highway 4 is at speed. the benicia bridge might have been gusty, kari, speeds

overnight but what do you have? >> it's still pretty windy in some spots, mike, a big concern for most of our microclimates again today, as we now have this red flag warning that continues through tomorrow evening, that means that we will have a high fire danger. we have this very dry northwesterly wind blowing across the central valley and through the delta and that's going to increase the chance that any sparks that do get going in any vegetation could spread rapidly because we are not only seeing these high winds but some hot temperatures and low humidity so there could be a faster rate of spread of any sparks today. we have to be really careful as our temperatures today reach 92 degrees in fairfield. we'll see a high of 91 in antioch. oakland today cooler, reaching 80 degrees there and 7 in san francisco. we can see there will be a wide range in temperatures across all of our microclimates. very high fire danger once again for some spots today. we're watching dates throughout

morning. >> that's right, kari. speaking of that fire danger, staffing up, fire crews will be on alert as fire danger looms. sergio quintana has more. >> reporter: the strong winds died down tonight. earlier residents said there were strong gusts. earlier today a small grass fire that broke out near vacaville, it was knocked down pretty quickly by firefighters. two and a half acres of charred grass. this used to be a government missile bunker. >> when i seen it, the whole hill was already black. >> reporter: julia cooper was returning home from a walk when she saw the charred grass and firefighters mopping it up. it was a relief. >> it was bad. it was a heavy, heavy wind. it wasn't just a breeze like you have now. it was gusts and wind. >> reporter: that is part of the reason why cal fire is getting ready. >> every unit throughout northern california, to be more specific, is staffing upadditio

danger, because so much of the state is also seeing drought conditions. in fact, cal fire spokesman robert foxworthy says people should hold off on something they often ask homeowners to do. >> right now in the conditions we have, this isn't the time for the public to get out and start doing those outdoor brush clearing vegetation removal type projects. >> reporter: instead, he says people should be getting their go bags ready just in case a fire breaks out nearby and evacuations are issued. sergio quintana, "today in the bay." firefighters are out looking for hot spots after a small fire in the santa cruz mountains and started at noon yesterday. it burned about seven acres. no cause yet but firefighters are not ruling out a possible flare-up from last year's massive czu fire. more detail

firefighters across the state already busy, cal fire crews battling several fires. the biggest is the southern fire, this one burning in san diego county. it started yesterday morning and so far about 3,000 acres have burned. containment stands at zero, at least three structures have been destroyed by the flames so far. another great resource for the changing condition is kari's twitter page. she's tweeting out updates about the winds and potential fire dangers as well. follow her, her handle @karihallweather. now to the pandemic and happening today, contra costa county offering two new places to get covid vaccines. the county opening walk-in vaccination sites for anyone who lives or works in the county. now through thursday go tomenta in concord or through next sunday visit john missionary

baptist church and this is in richmond. and happening today, the free vaccine shuttle provided by ac transit will temporarily return in oakland. the shuttle takes riders to the oakland coliseum vaccination site free for every 15 minutes from the coliseum b.a.r.t. station between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m., the service will be offered today through next sunday. let's take a live look at san francisco this morning. it's looking more like the city could move to the least restrictive yellow tier this week, if that happens, restrictions would loosen on friday. the biggest change that bars that don't serve food can finally open indoors at 25% capacity, indoor gyms, rooms ca at 50% capacity. outdoor live events are allowed at 67% capacity. marin county also meet that

criteria to move into the yellow tier as well. health leaders say they're not predicting anything and they're waiting for the state to make the final call. just a few hours, andrew brown, jr., will be laid to rest in elizabeth city, north carolina. he was shot and killed by deputies earlier c month. as sam brock reports, his funeral comes and calls for justice get louder. >> reporter: in north carolina, family members and friends of 42-year-old andrew brown are demanding accountability and answers. over the weekend there were peaceful demonstrations. the protesters using the power of their words and feet as in a matter of hours, andrew brown will be laid to rest in some of the most high-profile figures in the social justice movement ready to shine a brighter spotlight on this issue, the story coming up on "today." >> activists plan to march for a man who recently died in the custody of alame da police

journal" reported verizon was exploring a sale of assets, aol and yahoo! declaring them nearless worthless with a write-off back in 2018. verizon sold tumblr for an undisclosed amount in 2019 and sold "huff post" to buzzfeed. and the company will spend $40 million to improve policy enforcement of in an insider investigation of etsy violating rules, weapons, fake covid-19 treatments, elephant ivory and homemade items passed off as homemade. etsy uses automated, manual and community reporting to find violators on the site. >> i'm glad they do that. or sell things on etsy. thanks, frank. bracing for budget cuts. still ahead on "today in the bay," the financial fallout one bay area city is dealing with

good morning monday. oh yeah, taking a live look at the golden gate bridge, one car, two cars, off the going going as we get started with the day. 4:46, dark and early this morning, but we want to get a look at the forecast for you, stepping outside this morning, a little cool for me but not too

bad. 52 right now, kari, so not bad starting out this morning. >> not bad at all. it's still windy in some spots especially through the delta and we've been talking about this red flag warning really concerning to see especially this early in the season, when we're in spring and we're already talki need. you need a red flag warning the criteria is issued about 12 levels dropping at 15% or less also doesn't help t wend ar getting temperature in some s in the low 90s and that's what we've seen in parts of solano county, across much of the central valley, where all of this is lit up in red. where the red flag warning continues up until 5:00 tomorrow evening and during this time, we could see some wind gusts picking up and we can even tell looking from a distance that the vegetation is so dry. add in those winds, here is a look at the wind speed forecast

coming in from the north which drops humidity as it continues to move over land. it's not a moist ocean breeze that comes in from the west so we do see winds picking up today, and we'll see those gusts at about 25-plus into the afternoon. the rest of the bay area seeing those winds at about 15 to 20 miles per hour, so still quite windy today and we need to be really careful, look at the range in temperatures at 92 for a high in fairfield. napa, martinez reaching 87 and low 80s for parts of the south bay as well as palo alto. san francisco reaching the low 70s this afternoon, which is quite warm but we will cool down as the high pressure continues to move off towards the east over the next few days. by the end of the week into the weekend it will make way for some cooler air to come in, finally giving us a chance and a weather, and then also the winds do still stay breezy. we'll be watching that storm system staying to the north of us, unfortunately still no rain here as we go through the

seven-day forecast. take a look at all of these days, where we are expecting high winds. inland areas in spots like gilroy and santa rosa reaching into the mid 80s today and tomorrow, going toward the end of the week, going to feel much nicer finally feeling like spring with temperatures in the low 70s. we'll see that continuing into early next week. san francisco coming out of those 70s and then some low 60s by the end of the week. mike, you've been watching the roads. any problems popping up? >> no, but we did get a warning from chp, gusty winds for the benicia bridge. we'll talk about that bridge in a second. i want to show you the big view in green sensors as you expect on a monday, 4:49. we'll zoom out toward the al month pass where sometimes we get wind and warnings from chp there. kari talked about gusty conditions possible at times, altamont pass looks fine. from the top of your screen it's vasco still under 20 minutes from marsh creek road down to 580, no problems, no disturbances there, and the bottom number there coming off

the benicia bridge south 680 walnut creek under ten minutes, easy drive at the limit, no problems, no delays through concord and that's a great drive. getting over toward the bay bridge same thing for the travel times so we take a live look at your span and westbound those taillights away from us over on the incline moving nicely without delay and no backup at the toll plaza. too early. back to you. >> thanks, mike. president biden is hitting the road this week to sell his plans to shore up the nation's infrastructure and help families recover from the pandemic. both plans come with high price tags. congressional republicans are balking at the cost while signaling negotiations over the plans will ramp up this week. "today in the bay's" chris pollone is on capitol hill with the latest. >> reporter: as president joe biden takes his american family answer jobs plans directly to the american people, the white house is also working behind the scenes to drum up congressional support. >> we're going to work with republicans. we're going to find common ground. >> reporter: now republicans sounding eager to strike a deal. >> if the white house is willing to work with us, this say the p

trillion for the white house infrastructure bill, the families plan $1.8 trillion. the white house says it will increase taxes on corporations and the wealthy to pay for it. >> no family earning under $400,000 will pay a penny more in taxes and we've been aciduous in sticking to that pledge. >> reporter: rolling back the trump tax cuts could kill economic growth and will try to scale down the scope of both bills. >> we have to wrestle with, can we spend $6 trillion to $6.5 trillion and raise taxes by $4 trillion to $4.5 trillion and create a better answer. my answer is no. the american government can't be responsible for everything. >> reporter: president biden walking a tight rope trying to get ten republicans to vote for his plans while keeping progressive members of his party

happy. chris pollone, nbc news, washington. the recall election date announcement will likely not happen before next month, over the weekend during the convention for california's democratic party, vice president kamala harris talked about white house support for governor newsom. she and the president both support him 100%. meanwhile, costs for a special election will not be known until next month at the earliest, pegged anywhere from $81 million to $400 million, depending on the amount of covid related precautions. caitlyn jennerer under fire from the transgender rights community and it's from comments she recently made to tmz opposing transgender competing in girls sports in schools. jenner is the 1976 olympic decathlon gold medalist who later came out as transgender in 2015. she is now running for governor. jenner in the past came down the trump administration for

discriminatory actions against trans people even though she was a trump supporter. palo alto budget planner is planning budget cuts for the next year, impacting libraries, community services and public safety. the police department lost 11 positions last year and right now the proposed budget would eliminate another five officers. councilmembers still need to approve that budget. the new fiscal year begins on july 1st. it's not just cities still struggling to get by. many businesses are reeling from the pandemic. next here on "today in the bay," the all new round of relief many can start applying for later today. and happening now, california's receiving $1 million from doordash to encourage people to get the vaccine. that donation comes in the form of $25 doordash gift cards given out to those vaccine participants, and it's all to get more people in those underserved communities vaccinated. cal oes is giving out gift cards

4:56 and a lot of hope in san francisco riding on the resumption of the cruise business. the centers for disease control recently suggested it may allow ships to set sail this summer. "the examiner" reports that would be a huge boost in revenue. the port of san francisco has seen a nearly 50% drop over the million over the next five years. nearly 200 arrivals have been in san francisco since the no port
