now at 5:00, under investigation, two asian women stabbed while waiting for a bus in san francisco, a live report on how the victims are doing this morning, and what police are saying so far about the attack. plus, taking water restrictions to the next level. one agency putting more pressure on customers for everything from washing your car to showering. new rules they're facing as drought conditions worsen across our state. facebook about l decide whether today to let donald trump back on the social network. >> and good morning to you on this wednesday. thanks so much for making us part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm san francisco, where two asian-american seniors were stabbed while waiting for a bus. the stabbings happened in daylight, along busy market street with a lot of people nearby. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live in san francisco this morning. cierra, police are already calling this a random attack but what else are they saying this morning? >> reporter: yes, good morning. those two women, one 85 and one 65 years old were simply waiting for the bus at fourth and market as mentioned, a busy intersection, when police say they were stabbed. we are learning more information about the extent of their injuries. an official with the city says one of the women was slashed across the back and elbow, another through the arm and to the chest. that woman needed surgery to treat her injuries. both were transported to san francisco general. police were able to locate a

weapon and using security cameras in the area, were able to locate the 54-year-old san francisco man suspected in the stabbings, about two hours later they found him on the 600 block of eddy street. right now police are not ruling this situation a hate crime, although they said they are not ruling it out. we will continue to follow this story, both on any charges filed against that suspect as well as any health updates for the two women victims of this latest attack. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay". >> quite frightening, thanks so much, cierra. police in san jose looking for a driver involved in a deadly hit-and-run, this happened a little before 10:00 last night in south san jose, on koozer road near princeton plaza mall. video from the scene shows what appears to be a mangled segway device. police are not saying if the victim was riding it before say was a pedestrian. a lot of people are calling

this the first sign of things to come when it comes to our climate in crisis. bun way area water agency laying down new drought related rules you need to know before watering your lawn and your plants. "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live in san ramon. other water providers are watching this one closely. >> reporter: that's right, marcus. so far, new rules apply to different communities, but since the state is experiencing severe drought in certain counties, every resident may want to start doing his or her part. marin water has already implemented restrictions such as not washing cars at home and no power washing houses or businesses but last night it increased restrictions after a late night vote the marin water boar to cut back using sprinklers to two days a week, drip irrigation three days per week. in addition pools and spas will have to be covered to minimize water loss. marin's reservoirs are at approximately 50%, usually above 90% this time of year.

now low water levels throughout the bay area have many water districts concerned. east bay mud is asking customers to cut back 10%, and san francisco is considering restrictions, but leads the state in water conservation. in santa clara county, so far water restrictions are recommended but not yet required like marin water district and since we're seeing some warmer weather ahead, people at home should start looking at ways to conserve water for sure. reporting live in san ramon, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> sharon, thank you. now the 2019 kincade fire now under the legal microscope in san francisco. a federal judge yesterday heard arguments on whether pg&e violated its criminal probation when it sparked the fire, which destroyed 174 homes in sonoma county. the probation is tied to the pg&e criminal conviction in 2016. last month sonoma county prosecutors charged pg&e with multiple counts tied to the

kincade fire which may have started from faulty equipment. pg&e denied committing any new crimes and the next hearing will take place next month. we have new details on a fast-moving grass fire in solano county along westbound interstate 80 at the american canyon road off-ramp. it started when a woman pulled off the road with car trouble and a fire started under the hood. the wind carries embers into the dry brush along the freeway, burning about five acres. luckily no one was hurt. young teenagers and preteens are one step closer to getting the shot. president biden says if the fda approves that expansion he'll make some 20,000 pharmacy sites available for the shots. it's a move some stanford doctors agree with. >> for the 12 to 15-year-old children the pfizer vaccine has worked quite well demonstrating no cases of covid in the vaccinated children and ten

fund-raising plan and overcome critics' concerns that the money could be better spent. pittsburg leaders aproved a long-term plan to provide driverless shuttle cars between b.a.r.t., bus and amtrak stations. these are the renderings of the cars which people will be able to use through an app or even a kiosk along the routes. the city will be working in partnership with private company to roll out the cars which may be fully operational by the end of the decade. 5:07 on your wednesday morning. cinco de mayo as well. what are your plans for today? right now still early as we take a live look outside this morning waiting for the sun's arrival, no doubt going to warm things up. we had beautiful afternoons but a little tad on the warm side. let's see what we're in store for today, kari. >> we'll have another warm day so as you're getting ready to head out, take in the cool air, we're feeling right now. pleasant hill heading to work

going to start out with light jacket weather but you'll not need the jacket later today. look at our trend going from 55 degrees at 6:00 to some low 80s by lunch time. so i probably find some air conditioning for lunch, maybe you'll hit up a good mexican restaurant today. now we're going to see our temperatures reaching into the low 70s for oakland, but then we have low 90s for antioch and fairfield so you can see the spread in temperatures. we'll talk about the changes ahead coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> kari, looking good. i have one spotty got to check on that once again in the south bay. let's start with the contra costa county drive. we have a disabled vehicle westbound highway 4, the arrow is pointing in that direction not because i'm pointing to the hazard sign. it's there near willow pass road blocking part of one lane that's the direction the commute will build closer to 6:15 but the slowing starts there. right now just watching it carefully, the slowing through 84, that's eased up, now that it's reopened from overnight

roadwork on schedule between 680 and mission boulevard, 84 is reopened and will continue the overnight closures there. a little slowing, recovering now from north 101 through san mateo. the crew clearing around whipple but we'll check on that again and over here, i noticed still have the slowdown southbound 101 approaching blossom hill, they're finishing up work in that direction, tomorrow night and -- tonight and tomorrow night, next two nights the northbound side with closure at blossom hill, they probably have to finish stuff up a little bit later than 5:00 a.m. a possible solution to california's housing crisis. still ahead at 5:25 on "today in the bay," the 3-d printed housing communities that may be on the horizon, and the waste it's said to help eliminate. it is decision day for facebook, today's the day that the company and its oversight board will decide whether or not to let donald trump back on the site. we'll have the latest. and how many of you hate being put on the waitlist when

south bay, we will see our temperatures in the mid-50s at 7:00. at 9:00 we're at 64 degrees. you see where we're going here. it's going to heat up again today, reaching back into the low 80s, but it's going to be beautiful for the outdoor activities. we'll talk about some cooler and windy conditions in our forecast, coming up in a few minutes. one overnight outdoor activity is roadwork. looks like that might have finally cleared, judging by the sensors on my map in san jose. 101 north bay moves smoothly. a few more headlights south at speed, san rafael all the way down to the golden gate bridge. good morning, very happy wednesday to you as well. it is decision day for facebook, a company itself in the past has had a significantly negative effect on our democracy. in less than an hour, facebook's oversight board, a group of independent experts appointed by faith bike, will decide whether

to let donald trump back on facebook. he was removed after the attacks on the capitol and the capitol police by his supporters. in fact, trump was kicked off all the major social networks. yesterday his website showed off a new blog that looks a lot like twitter but he's the only user. it contains many of the falsehoods he's repeated in the past. the "wall street journal" reports that facebook has actually started to warn advertisers the oversight board may order the company to reinstate trump's account. facebook says it will abide by the board's decision. twitter has banned trump permanently. treasury secretary janet yellen rattled the markets a bit yesterday after she said higher interest rates may be needed to battle inflation. she then backtracked on that. yellen doesn't control interest rates but knows a lot about them. she used to be the fed chair. we get a sneak peek of friday's monthly jobs report in a few minutes, adp which

processes private payrolls shows us their numbers. america's been creating nearly 1 million jobs a month as the recovery continues to be very strong. and the end of an era, the chicago mercantile exchange is doing away with the last of its open outcry, where broker traders scream and yell and use hand signals as well to trade commodities back and forth, replaced of course by computers. the market had scaled back open outcry pits, now it's shutting them down forever. marcus and laura, a life time ago, i used to work on the other one, the chicago board of trade and i still remember this meant buy, like give me, and this meant sell, push away and you did price and quantity, i can't -- i remember this is 100 and this is at the market but that's about all i remember and it doesn't matter, because my job was replaced by a computer, too. >> i just remember from the movies, i thought that was so cool to watch. >> in both "ferris buehler" and

"trading spaces" that one is a classic. >> absolutely. thanks, scott. >> scott mcgrew, still has the moves. new this morning, if you want to get into business with a famous actress, now you can. actress jessica alba's honest company is going public after pricing its ipo. the company sells diaper, nursing products through its website costco and target. the offer values the company about $1.5 billion. oh, one of those why didn't i think of that? trending adam sandler speaking out about the now viral video showing the actor walking out of an ihop. >> this has probably happened to all of us. the clip posted last month on tiktok by a 17-year-old hostess there, apparently didn't recognize the actor due of course to the beard and the mask we're all wearing now. sandler and his daughter walked out after being told that there was a 30-minute wait.

this week, sandler tweeted about that saying "for the record, i only left the ihop because the nice woman told me the all-you can eat deal didn't apply to the milkshakes." making fun of it all. look, even hollywood stars get turned away from the biggest restaurants like ihop. >> got wait in line. >> no special treatment for him. i don't think -- everybody's got to wait, right? >> yes. >> yes. >> no matter how many movies you make. you wait behind me, sir. >> there you go. you don't have to wait for the forecast. kari's got a look at it right now. first come, first serve. >> yes, and it's going to be another warm day. let's get a look at that forecast, as we're waiting on the sunrise. we have to wait on that, but we can already see that the sky is clear and we're going to have another sunny day. seven-day forecast coming up in the bottom of the screen. check out your microclimate, as

we head over toward the east bay and get a look at brentwood, with our forecast, and heading out to the park early in the day, 6:00 we're at 57 degrees. now we go from the upper 50s to the low 80s. by 11:00 you can see how fast is it heats up. get out there early. we'll see a high of 86 degrees in morgan hill today and not too bad in cupertino. milpitas reaching 83 degrees and we're going to see a cooldown as you head into oakland today and you'll have more of that ocean breeze picking up, so that's what's helping to keep some of the bay cool but for the valleys from the tri-valley into the delta, it's still going to be very warm today, reaching upper 80s and low 90s. check out the cooldown near the coastline, half moon bay reaching 59 but 79 in pa lpalo .

it's all about where you are in terms of what weather you'll experience, that's our microclimate. we'll see dry conditions, a little bit of a cooldown as the storm system panspasses to the h of us. as it moves by it's going to be windy the next couple of days. for the weekend we have the warmup once again and still not talking about any rain here in the seven-day forecast. so as we look at our high temperatures, upper 80s today, and then we get a break, we can turn the air conditioner off, heading into tomorrow, as well as friday. those winds will be gusting but if you're making outdoor plans for mother's day, plan on it being warm in some spots. our valleys reaching into the mid 80s and a little bit warmer for early next week. we'll see temperatures continuing in the 60s in san francisco. nice but breezy over the next several days. mike, any problems right now for the morning commute? >> i'm having a problem resolving two things here, kari, because the report from caltrans says crews are on scene in san jose but as we look at the map

the arrow shows you southbound 101 is green once again, passing by blossom hill, the area we saw the slowing. i think the crew is just clearing the last few minutes and just a couple of minutes of two extrawork over there, thank you for doing that. in san mateo the slowing cleared northbound 101, i believe that crew cleared along other sections for 101 for the overnight crews without any problems. getting through the east bay, we're looking at the contra costa county drive, a little slowing shows up around willow pass road but the incident has cleared with a disabled vehicle so that's better news. let's look at travel times. the top number was slower. we're getting recovering about a minute as we have that crew clear from the last lane approaching concord, and approaching the golden gate bridge, the southbound direction with the headlights moves smoothly across the span and into the city. northbound just that bus, hey, look at that, plenty of space. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 5:20 and next here on "today in the bay,"evmk■ "nbc bay area

welcome back. new technology could soon lend a helping hand to california's housing crisis. two companies are using robots to build the first 3-d housing community ever in the u.s., in southern california with a completion date of spring of next year. one leader at cal's turner center for housing innovation says any innovation that can be brought to the site should be explored. >> the cost to build housing california is so high that anything we can think of to lower that cost of housing is going to be really important. >> one of the companies behind the project is already building 3-d homes in parts of the bay area. check out the full story on nbc

lx, 11-15 over the air, channel 185 on xfinity cable or any time on lx.com. it's 5:24. the covid-19 vaccine record card, the closest thing that we have to universal vaccine passport. >> it's important, but what if your info on yours is wrong? consumer investigator chris chmura is going to show us how to fix that. >> jennifer wrote us because the clinic that gave her her vaccine wrote "tracy" on her record card. tracy is her middle name. she wanted to know how to correct that. we went straight to the cdc. vaccine recipients can access their vaccine record by contacting their vaccination provider. for many that will be easy but in jennifer's case and a lot of other people she went to a mass vaccine site. she wasn't able to contact them and lots of them aren't going to be there forever. they might already be gone. so what do you do? the cdc says if you cannot contact your vaccination

provider directly contact your state health department's immunization information system. in california, you can call 1-800-578-7889 and press 6 to talk to someone. when we called the iis agent said jennifer could go to her doctor who could correct the card or issue a new one. the department of health confirmed that advice. the doctor can also, and this is really important, update the database so show tracy wasn't vaccinated about you jennifer was. when you get your shot remember jennifer's case. the cdc recommends 15 to 2030-minutes of down time for side effects after the shot. during that time, look at your card, confirm everything on it is accurate and if it isn't, speak up right there. 5:26. and it's graduation day for students at dominican university in marin county. the school holding a drive-through ceremony for students and families. more than 200 cars are expected to drive through the center of campus starting at 1:00 p.m.,

differentiate them from governor newsom, as "today in the bay" continues right now. wednesday morning, happy cinco de mayo. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. president biden announces a new goal in the fight toned the pandemic getting at least one vaccine dose to 70% of americans by the fourth of july. a big part of the strategy is making the vaccine more accessible. >> and expanding it to kids as well. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live this morning taking a look at the new strategy. good morning, kris. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. the vaccine rates are starting to decline across the country and also here in the bay area, but that's not necessarily bad news. that just means that so many people were willing and able to get vaccinated early on that now we're talking about reaching some folks who maybe haven't been able to get to some of those mass vaccination sites. so the next goal of getting 70% of people to have at least one dose of the vaccine by the

fourth of july will take making more vaccines available at pharmacies, also it will take getting kids 12 to 15 vaccinated as soon as the fda authorizes it, which could come within a few days. >> when you get to 70%, you are going to have a substantial impact on the number of cases per day which will translate into a diminution to the number of hospitalizations and deaths and you'll see what we can do as a society the guidelines restricted at a certain level are much more liberalized and people will be able to really approach getting back to some form of normality. >> reporter: so another part of that strategy is shifting away from the mass vaccination sites like levi's stadium and the coliseum there in oakland and toward pharmacies and then local vaccine locations, where people can get them within their communities, without having to make an appointment.

today alone we know they're doing that in anderson elementary school in san jose, a walk-up clinic in concord at meadow homes elementary school and ambrose recreation center in bay point and the benicia senior center doing that. there are more communities around the bay area that are doing vaccine clinics specifically for 16 and 17-year-olds, because they have to get the pfizer vaccine that is the only one that's authorized for use in their age group. laura, marcus? >> kris, before you go, a lot of people are wondering why there's a push to vaccinate younger kids, if they really don't even seem to get very sick and you're concerned about their health. >> reporter: absolutely. we have kids within that age range so we've been listening very closely and so far, it looks like the data shows that they don't get sick, but they still can transmit, and because they like to huddle together and it's hard to keep them apart when they're playing sports and in a classroom situation, the

advice is really that it would be good to get them vaccinated because then they're not bringing it home and taking it into the larger community. by the way, that can't happen unless it is authorized by the fda. the fda is considering whether or not it is safe enough to do that and we expect that decision within the next few days. laura? >> want to make sure it's safe for our kids. that's so point. they're our future. thanks, kris. >> reporter: absolutely. a live look at l.a. and san francisco, both cities just given the green light to move into the yellow less restrictive covid-19 tier. this move marks san francisco as the first county in the bay area to do so. almost all the other counties still in orange. solano county is in the red tier. starting tomorrow, nearly every business in san francisco will now be able to open indoors in some capacity. mayor london breed and house speaker nancy pelosi making that announcement yesterday. under the yellow tier, bars can open indoors for the first time in more than a year, but capacity is capped at 25%.

gyms can increase their capacity to 50%. workers at an oakland trader they're being slighted when it comes to the recent hazard pay decisions, so according to oakland's side, the lake shore avenue location not covered in oakland's recent hazard pay ordin ordinance. the company dialed back on the in-house wage bump increasing availability for the covid vaccine. workers are receiving $3 less per hour than workers at the nearby trader joe's in rock ridge. the company did not respond to oakland's side. san francisco's school board members are trying to determine how to spend some $60 million coming the district's way to help offset a huge budget deficit. the district is now facing a deficit of more than $100 million, but it's reportedly receiving nearly $60 million back in pandemic related funding. $40 billion is coming from the state to support learning recovery, another $20 million is

coming from the federal government. district leaders plan to spread the money out to cover costs thr is wrapping upping for two former north bay high school classmates accused of killing a police officer in rome. in 2019 prosecutors say the two stabbed and killed an undercover? er in a botched drug deal. defense attorneys argue the stabbing was self-defense. the trial is going on for more than a year. as soon as today, closing arguments are supposed to wrap up. attorneys for convicted murderer derek chauvin are requesting a new trial. last month the jury convicted the former minneapolis police officer of killing george floyd. chauvin's attorney say the pre-trial media coverage affected his client's right to a fair trial. the request asks for a new trial and a they venue.

chauvin killed floyd nearly a year ago after kneeling on his neck for nearly nine and a half minutes. one of the players seeking to win california's governor seat in the recall election continues his multicity tour today. conservative businessman john cox is visiting six california stills this week. today's stop includes san francisco and san jose. yesterday in wine country he actually stopped outside of the famous french laundry restaurant, this is where governor newsom last fall infamously ate with associates despite the public gathering rules. >> we're going to need big, beastly changes to be made in the state. >> you saw there next to the half ton bear. 2018 newsom defeated john cox in the general election by 24 percentage points. caitlyn jenner released her

first campaign ad. this week she's supposed to start appearing on national cable news shows. a follow-up for you now in the north bay town of windsor where the voters have spoken, on the future of their embattled mayor but open town council seat. any vote to recall dominic foppoli is months away, but yesterday a special election was held for a new town council member, an election called months before the current controversy. at parent winner of yesterday's election, rosa renosa is reportedly among those demanding foppoli resign. here we go, 5:38 this morning, and what a beautiful way to just start this morning. look at this. you could see there peeks of golden gate bridge but look at the bed of clouds there. ahh, just want to lay down, snuggly soft, right? but you know what? i mean that's just keeping the temperatures a little bit cooler there in san francisco this morning, but kari, how is it going to shape up for us today throughout the bay area? just beautiful. >> carl is back.

it is so beautiful to see that and very picturesque, too. let's head inland where we're not going to get any of that cooling fog and it's going to be another warm day. taking a live look outside in walnut creek, where it's all cleared. you're getting ready to head out for work in oakland, expect it to be light jacket weather with low 50s as we go into today, you'll also get a little bit of that breeze coming in from san francisco, so we'll only make it into the mid-60s by lunch time. we'll be at about 67 dgrees in oakland. highs all over the place for the next couple of days from the coast to the inland areas. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike, we were talking about transit. how is the commute looking? >> well, you know what? i should have known better because of my experience with the commute. no problems on transit first of all but as we look at san jose i said they should be about to clear the crew and they were scheduled to. it hasn't cleared south 101 at blossom hill. suddenly the last ten minutes more slowing past the closure

republican leader liz cheney's position is in doubt this morning. cheney once again saying trump's claims that he won the election are false and they are false but her pointing that out upsets her fellow republicans. republican congressman anthony gonzalez who agrees with cheney explains "if a prerequisite for leading our party is to continue to lie to our voters, then liz is not the best fit. liz isn't going to lie to the people. she's going to stand up on principle and if that's going to be a distracting for folks, shoo he is not the best fit." "axios" reports kevin mccarthy was caught off mic saying cheney was "toast." we have not heard that quote ourselves but mccarthy not supporting cheney would be a significant blow to her leadership in the republican party. it is fair to remind ourselves both mccarthy and his counterpart in the senate, mitch mcconnell, put the blame for the insurrection at the capitol at the feet of donald trump.

the earthquake early warning system is being used up and down the west coast. the usgs says washington is the late toast review the shake alert system. the app allows people to get a notification of the earthquake seconds before you feel the shaking. the system rolled out in california in 2019, expande$ oregon in march of this year. this morning a half million more baby salmon are swimming somewhere outside the golden gate bridge. they were released in san francisco bay last night. >> that's right, the golden gate salmon association is pushing for last night's release. these salmon were never going to make it to the bay by themselves. the release is part of a larger effort that will bring 17 million salmon from fish hatcheries into the bay. experts said they'd be happy if half a million of the fish returned to spawn. >> happy swimming. you know what? every game a must win for the warriors in their sprint to the post season birth.
