summer if vaccine goals are met and as nbc's miguel almaguer explains, the success of the campaign may hinge on a door to door initiative. hey, miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so far around 149 million americans have received at least one vaccine dose. dramatically driving down hospitalization rates in major cities, including here in los angeles. officials continue to stress vaccinations are the key to moving forward. be but some remain reluctant. this morning sign of progress as the nation races to reopen amid a blitz to get more americans vaccinated. and now the promise our future can more closely resemble the pre-covid past. >> we are not out of the woods yet but we could be very close. all of us are getting fully vaccinated and continuing our prevention efforts can help us turn the corner on the pandemic as early as july. >> reporter: top health officials say the country can achieve the president's goal. 70% of americans with at least one vaccination by july 4th.

but as the number of doses administered now dips to half what it was in april, reaching the reluctant requires more intense face-to-face efforts. i think they've got incentives now. >> reporter: in neighborhoods, laundromats and grocery stores, vaccine ambassadors are going into the community and trying to make shots less scary and more convenient. >> the greatest fear that we find is the fear of the unknown. >> reporter: in kansas, some business owners are offering incentives, from wellness points to burger deals. >> i thought there was just a great way to get people excited. >> reporter: in new york, the traditional sounds of summer are returning sooner than expected. with yankee stadium and the mets citi field admitting larger crowds later this month. los angeles is also moving into the state's less restrictive tier. >> i'm excited. i i'd like to get back out and come into places like this. i'm fully vaccinated, so it's good.

>> reporter: health experts are now saying rather than expecting a national level of herd immunity the u.s. may see some regions enjoying higher levels of protection. in san francisco where about 70% of adults have received at least one vaccine dose, new covid cases are down to roughly 26 per day. this morning a shot at hope for one city and a nation eager to move forward. new this morning, pfizer announcing they will be providing vaccines for athletes at the tokyo olympics this summer. the push is expected to begin by the end of this month while the hope for fully vaccinating every delegate by the time they arrive, the company says the doses will be donated and won't impact the country's current vaccine supplies. also news about moderna. and they are talking about a booster shot and how effective it may be. what do you know about that? >> reporter: moderna announced

its booster shot. a third dose given about six to eight months after the initial two-dose vaccine is showing to be effective in clinical tries against highly contagious variants. many experts do believe booster shots will be necessary going forward. >> miguel almaguer for us. thank you. also new developments in the battle of the fu battle of the future of the republican party with her own leadership role in jeopardy congresswoman liz cheney penned an op ed to the "washington post" and in it implores her fellow republicans to turn away from former president trump and what she sees at his dangerous lies about the election. we've got two reports. we'll start with nbc's chief white house correspondent peter alexander, peter good morning. >> even as liz cheney faces all but certain removal from her number three house republican leadership post she is pushing back against her party effectively saying it is not worth trying to keep the job if that means lying about the 2020 election and in that sharp new essay,

president trump but still remain loyal republicans, we don't have a place in this party. we are worthless we are not worth fighting for. >> so peter, how does this play out? what's next in this leadership battle are there enough votes to replace congresswoman cheney. >> reporter: house republicans could vote as early as next we say to expel cheney from that leadership position. they say they do have the votes. it was three months ago that the house republicans vote instead support of her in that position. it shows how quickly the republican party is changing in support of president trump next wednesday, the same day that vote could happen is the day that president biden is set to host leaders from both parties including mitch mcconnell and kevin mccarthy >> peter alexander, thank you very much. meantime, the former president is also going after facebook following the decision by the social media giant's oversight board to uphold his ban on both facebook and instagram. nbc's senior washington correspondent hallie jackson has

that part of the story hey, hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hi, hoda, good morning. that decision by the facebook oversight board has implications beyond just what happened to former president trump's account. as it fuels the debate here in washington and around the country about whether the government should step in and rein in big tech's big power facebook fury this morning with new reaction from the former president's conservative allies after the social media company's oversight board upheld donald trump's suspension from the site, at least for now >> they do whatever the heck they want. they don't ask permission. they don't follow their own terms. they don't actually have any rules that they follow, and they censor conservatives. >> they've gotten too big. it's time they're broken up. >> donald j. trump just got a huge boost from facebook, which basically canceled him making him a martyr. >> reporter: and former president trump warning the social media companies that have banned him, facebook, twitter, google must pay a political price.

mr. trump was initially suspended in the aftermath of the january 6th riots. >> we will never give up we will never concede. >> reporter: for his posts fanning the flames of conspiracy theories. >> go home, we love you, you're very special. >> reporter: facebook said the initial ban was justified, they say the vague penalty of indefinite suspension was not appropriate, calling on facebook to clarify its own rules and giving the platform a six-month window to put a time limit on the suspension, permanently disable mr. trump's account or perhaps let him back on. will be clear and proportionate. thomas hughes is the director of the oversight board. do you believe facebook is a partisan organization at its core >> i can't say whether they are or they aren't what i can say is there needs to be greater transparency and predictability. >> reporter: the new decision highlighting the power of platforms like facebook and whether the government should do more to regulate them. some lawmakers pointing out the

line between protecting free speech and rejecting disinformation democratic senator elizabeth warren tweeting trump should be banned for good, but facebook will continue to fumble with its power until congress and anti-trust regulators rein in big tech >> when 65% of americans get some or all their news from facebook and google, shouldn't there be some rules of the road? >> hallie you mentioned the former president saying these companies must pay a political price. so has the republican party responded? >> reporter: on the state level they have in some ways you've got the republican-led legislature in florida that just passed a bill to basically punish tech companies that deplatform political candidates. in texas you have the republican attorney general there launching an investigation into five tech companies for their bans of mr. trump. that actually led twitter to file its own lawsuit asking a federal court to hternal editorl policies so definitely a si tthisver on this issue, hoda.

>> hallie jackson for us thank you. now to murder convictions overseas that involve americans. craig's here with more on that story. craig, good morning to you. >> good morning to you as well a jury in italy late wednesday found two young americans guilty in the killing of a police officer in rome. and that jury sentenced the pair to life in prison. a collective gasp heard in the courtroom as those decisions were announced nbc's kelly cobiella joins us on the case good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the jury deliberated just over 12 hours before handing down the guilty verdicts on all counts for both of these california students the two admitted they were trying to buy drugs in rome back in july of 2019. and it didn't go as planned. elder looked stunned as the verdict was read, guilty of murder and extortion the 21-year-old father calling

out i love you as american students elder and 20 year old were led out of the courtroom in handcuffs the widow of the police officer they were convict of killing in tears calling the trial long and painful. the officer was a newlywed just back from his honeymoon in july of 2019 when he was killed on duty in rome, stabbed 11 times while investigating a cocaine deal gone wrong. italian media say this video unverified by nbc news, shows the suspects running away. police arrested elder and natalia at their four-star hotel hours later and said hidden in the ceiling panel was the murder weapon a seven inch military knife elder brought with him from the u.s. in court elder admitted to stabbing the officer in self defense saying they thought the

police officer and other were thugs, not police officers in plain clothes. >> that night was the worst night of my life because i took a man's life >> this morning both american students to face much of their young lives in an italian prison, both handed the maximum life sentence. elder's italian lawyer calling that shameful. a lawyer for churchillo's family saying the sentence reflects reality. elder's american lawyer telling us. >> the verdict was a shock we're confounded by the verdict both in its lack of reason and lack of compassion, and all the blame was laid at their feet and that's not justice in italy. that's not justice in america. that's not justice in any country. >> reporter: elder said in court that the officers never identified themselves, churchillo's partner said they did. they will appeal the verdict and sentence, but if that sentence

lanes cleared about 7:40. it's been a busy 12 hours for firefighters in eastern contra costa county. this is new video showing a grass fire at the marina in antioch, about ten acres burned. and a fire last night in discovery bay burned some 15 acres and right now crews are at the scene of a fire in bethel island. we don't have any video yet but firefighters tell us it is burning in a marina and a handful of boats are in flames. we have a crew headed there right now. conditions are not making it easy for the concerns when it deals with these fires. yeah, we have such dry vegetation, some winds picking up. our inland areas in the mid-70s. we will heat up again this weekend with our valleys reaching into the mid-80s. gusty today with highs reaching into the 60s in the forecast and continues into next week, marcus.

this is being closely monitored here on earth for good reason. >> yeah, debris from a chinese rocket launched last week is falling back to earth. here's the problem, no one is quite sure where it's going to land and it's going to happen in a matter of days. >> nbc news anchor joe fryer joins us with the latest. >> reporter: hey, good morning, debris from that carrier rocket is coming, but u.s. space command said they won't know exactly where it's headed until a few hours before it hits earth's atmosphere this morning a massive piece of space debris is hurdling around the earth. it's eventually expected to break apart and plummet toward our planet in the coming days. the problem is no one is exactly sure where it will land. >> we are certainly tracking its location through u.s. space command. >> reporter: last week china launched a rocket carrying part of its new space station, typically similar rockets are designed to safely fall into the ocean after they launch.

but experts say in this case, the massive rocket body islled earth's atmosphere >> we're following it as closely as we can. >> reporter: u.s. space command says they're aware of and tracking the location of the rocket in space. the agency said that reentry is expected this saturday, but that its impact entry point into the earth's atmosphere cannot be pinpointed until within hours of its reentry. >> and it's going at 17,500 miles per hour, so even the smallest little change won't cause it to deviate great amounts. >> reporter: random objects plummeting toward earth may seem like something out of a science fiction movie, like in the 1998 film "armageddon". >> what hit us >> small asteroid fragments. >> this new one you're tracking, how big? >> it's the size of texas, mr. president. >> reporter: despite the uncertainty, in real life we should not panic >> the chances of you getting

let's head over to al, get another check of the weather what you got your eye on >> we've been seeing some changes in our climate we've been talking about this, we've taken a look usually the new norm, 30-year average of weather that is updated every ten years to give us our climate well, national trends weather almost everywhere, except for the northern plains is warmer than usual the united states is one degree warmer on average than 20 years ago. take a look at some of these stats. the 90-year trend, one to 40 degrees of warming across much of the united states as you look a little closer in some individual spots, for example, las vegas's average low has increased by seven degrees since the 1970s. we take a look right now in houston, they've added an extra week of 90 degree temperatures since 2010, and as we move into the northeast, new york city you see an average snowfall that's up by 4 1/2 inches from 2010 so our climate obviously is changing, and we continue to watch it

we're going to get a jump start on mother's day celebrations this weekend. that's tomorrow on "today." before we get started with our news at 8:00, guys, the u.s. may be close to a turning point in the battle against the covid-19 pandemic, but health officials caution that continued progress depends on convincing more americans to get the vaccine. nbc national correspondent miguel almaguer joins us now with the latest. hey, miguel, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. nearly 150 million americans have received at least one vaccine dose. that has dramatically driven down hospitalization rates in major cities including here in los angeles. amid signs of progress, now comes the blitz to vaccinate more people. experts believe the country can reach the president's goal of at least partially vaccinating 70% of americans by the 4th of july, but as the number of new doses administered dips roughly below 50%, reaching the reluctant will require more face-to-face efforts. vaccine ambassadors are now going person to person and even

just like, you know, hold -- not hold me but they'd touch me. i felt it. it was their personal touch that i felt the most. >> just three months ago, 62-year-old john tilletson was fighting for his life at lennoxville hospital in new york city the memories of battling covid-19 are still so fresh he struggles to find the words. >> my fever was about 105. i had all sorts of hallucinations and nightmares and they were horrible, horrible things >> his critical care nurses, andrew wong and christine take care of the sickest of patients and now john was one of them. >> with mr. tillison, the thing that i remember the most is he was kind of walking along that borderline of being very, very sick. >> i think he was a little frightened to come in, he really wanted to just get home to his family. >> but in a covid intensive care

unit where no visitors are allowed, the nurses are the patient's family, andrew wong even leaving encouraging notes for john while he slept. >> i appreciated the idea that every day these people came to work, did what they did and saved my life. >> 28-year-old brian morales of queens, new york, agrees his nurses went above and beyond to be there for him when his family couldn't. >> even though there was days that i kept crying because i needed my mom to be next to me, the moment that i needed someone to be next to me because my family wasn't there, they were. >> brian was in the long island jewish forest hills hospital for 52 days battling covid-19 on a ventilator for much of that time his critical care nurses were mts hanif and star who was 6 months pregnant at the time. they remember him vividly not just because of how sick he was,

but how young. >> his rapid response, which is something they call overhead when a patient is crashing first thing i noticed, he was my age. >> the next thing he noticed was brian turning blue. >> i remember specifically right before he, you know, we had to sedate him, his last words were please don't let me die. >> and we're praying, like god just get us through the night. give us the strength to do whatever we have coming towards us because our goal is for these people to go home to their family >> and seven weeks later after a miraculous recovery, brian morales did go home to his family and now is back at work doing what he loves. >> today every day that i wake up, i feel so excited. i feel like everything is a new opportunity for you literally to explore the world. >> and john tilletson, father of three and grandfather of nine has since written a letter to his care team. >> it was to let them know that

good morning, it's 8:26. i'm marcus washington. it's been a busy 12 hours for firefighters in eastern contra costa county. showing a grass fire here in the arena in antioch. about ten acres burned around san joaquin river. that fire last night burned 15 acres. and crews are at the scene of a fire at bethel island. we don't have video just yet but firefighters say it's burning a marina and a handful of boats are in flamed. we'll have more here, of course, at midday. kari hall is here to take a look at the current conditions across
