"today in the bay" starts right now. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike inouye will give you an eye on the commute but first the friday forecast headed into the weekend meteorologist kari hall is tracking the digits for us. >> good morning, we're starting out with our typical morning across the bay area, nice and cool. a few clouds here and there but this will be the last day that we'll have temperatures in our valleys reaching into the 60s and 70s. it heats up tomorrow and we have the concerns of the high fire danger especially for solano county and areas off towards the east so we're watching that, as you get ready to head out the door for your commute in the south bay.

expect it in the 50s. until 11:00 in the low 60s so we'll talk more about that in the forecast coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute around the bay area? >> kari, we have one concern getting away from the bay bridge, but it's in the caldecott tunnel. let'z look at the map eastbound 24, counter commute and the commute even light right now. i circled it there. one bore has one lane that might be affected, a bumper i think from an earlier crash. everything else is very calm through contra costa county, no problem. early drive out of antioch or across the carquinez bridge and benicia bridges, there is the closure there in the alvarado niles area. we'll talk about that coming up. breaking news while you were sleeping, a police officer injured after being struck by a car in the south bay. police say it happened after that officer had been involved in some kind of incident with another car and then got out of his cruiser. it unfolded about 12:30 this morning in the east san jose foothills near alum rock park. the officer's injuries are not

life-threatening and a suspect is in custody. pete suratos is speaking with police and will have a live update top of the hour. developing right now all lanes back nope pittsburg following a late night freeway shooting at about 10:00 at night on highway 4 near the pittsburg bay point b.a.r.t. station. two people were shot, no word on their conditions or the status of the investigation. all westbound lanes were closed until midnight. this is the third shooting on highway 4 in the past eight days. d.c. cloud cover county's district attorney expected to formerly clear the walnut creek police officer who shot and killed a young man who years ago. officers killed miles hall in june of 2019 during what family members say was mental health crisis. they tell us the d.a. will make the announcement later today. body camera video showed hall refused to drop a metal pole and officers later say they felt their lives were in danger. family members also plan to hold

a news conference. to the pandemic. the moderna is highly effective for children between 12 and 17 years old. researchers studied 3,200 subjects and found the vaccine was 96% effective and with few if any side effects. the vaccine is currently authorized for adults 18 and older. as for pfizer's vaccine, the fda is expected to grant emergency authorization soon for children between 12 and 15. will schools require students to receive their shot before returning to the classroom? "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd looks at the idea. >> this is the vaccination hallway. >> reporter: dr. melissa mcnamara started the work in april. she and her army of volunteers have given over 1,000 covid-19 vaccinations to those eligible in her contra costa county community. now she and dr. naraji are pushing forward, making it easy for parents of 12 to 15-year-olds to make an

appointment to get a shot if the fda gives the approval. >> it's important. you know especially as these variants come out, it's really, really important to get these kids covered. >> as a parent of two teenagers, for me to feel safe for my child to go back to school, i want my kid to be vaccinated. >> reporter: some school districts in the bay area are also encouraging staff and students to get vaccinations. the oakland unified school district is one of them. >> we're reaching a point where there's some vaccine hesitation and we just want to remind everybody that this is a medicine that is going to help keep you safe. we have no plans to require vaccinations. >> reporter: and that's because school districts here inicalical cannot legally require students to get a covid vaccination. encouraging them to do so is okay. right now all 50 states have at least some vaccine mandates for children attending public schools and some private schools, but the covid-19 vaccination is not on the list. once the shot is approved for

children, some states may add the covid-19 shot to the list, but here in california, that will have to be done through the court system. >> there is the goods. >> reporter: dr. mcnamara is meanwhile getting ready. she feels teens need to be protected. >> if you have a vaccination, the chances of you not having a significant and adverse outcome is just better. >> reporter: cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." >> and more details a new poll suggesting not all parents are enthused about getting their child vaccinated. three in ten of the parents of children ages 12 to 15 said they will get their child vaccinated immediately after the vaccine is authorized. 20% will say they'll do so only if the schools require it. one in four say they will definitely not do so. >> let's go where the slow

rebound for the convention business continues to hurt the city, hit the city where it hurts the most in the wallet. "sf gate" reports in 2019 the travel and convention business industry brought in $11 billion. last year mostly wiped out and this year there are at most ten conventions planning to come to san francisco, this after the largest remaining one scheduled by the american college of rheumatology just canceled it for november. it would have brought in some $30 million. new details, san francisco leaders are reportedly ready to extend the hazard pay for grocery store workers. city's $5 an hour hike is supposed to expire may 19th but "the examiner" reports supervisors will vote to extend it through the middle of june. a live look on capitol hill, this is where president biden is expected to speak later today about the economy and the soon-to-be released april jobs report. the president is trying to build momentum for his agenda with key meetings on his infrastructure

"today in the bay's" chris pollone reports from washington. >> reporter: president joe biden taking his case for spending reo the people. >> i'm ready to do compromise. i'm not ready to do nothing. i'm not ready to have another period where america has another infrastructure month and doesn't change a damned thing. >> reporter: the president speaking thursday in louisiana, a state he lost to donald trump by 19 points. still the president found a willing listener in the republican mayor of lake charles. >> i don't care if it's president trump, president biden or president kanye west. if they are here in lake charles and they can help us, i will there to break bread with them and to try and accomplish some things. >> reporter: the president banking that his $2.3 trillion bill is popular with democratic and republican voters, building supports to put pressure on congressional republicans who have said they're intent on derailing his agenda. >> i'm anxious to stop the biden

advice about gusty winds. the bay bridge, altamont pass and the san mateo bridge they reported all three of those overnight but that's not unusual and nothing else as far as problems go. look at the big box trucks, bigger boxed trucks moving smoothly so that's a nice drive for the peninsula. back to you. people in two north bay towns may want to be on the lookout. take a look at your screen right now. sonoma county over the past week, bears have been spotted wandering around at least two of the nearby homes. >> as "today in the bay"'s jodi hernandez reports people are urged to make smart decisions if they see a bear. >> reporter: folks in this catadi neighborhood say they have a lot of wildlife passing through but this is a first. a bear paid a visit the other night and now the neighbor's on party alert. this is the surveillance footage a catadi couple woke up to monday morning, a bear strolling right past their front door.

>> i was shocked. absolutely shocked. i do not expect a bear at all. >> reporter: they say the bear wandered around their yard. >> somebody from behind was able to push this gate open. >> reporter: it may have even though the gate had been held closed with bricks. they immediately called police and warned their neighbors. >> i know it's probably a friendly bear, but i'm not going to take a chance. >> reporter: just a few days earlier, another sighting took place in neighboring sebastopol, and once again, a resident's camera captured an image. police in both cities are urging people to be on guard. >> we haven't seen any signs that the bear is being aggressive or anything like that, but if you do see the bear, we recommend that you obviously stay away from t don't approach it. >> you don't expect a bear, yeah. you do not. >> reporter: neighbor steve enos says he'll keep an extra close eye on his chickens. many speculate the bear may be

here is a live look outside, i don't know if you can see that but that little crescent move over the hills in san jose. as you get ready to head out the door hopefully you're not too distracted by that. high temperatures in milpitas expect a high of 71 and 76 in gilroy. for the east bay we have some upper 70s today, concord reaching 78, 70 in fremont and some upper 60s in oakland. it's still going to be cool, with the clouds and the fog hanging around half moon bay and for san francisco, we'll see those highs reaching into the low 60s for this afternoon up to about 62 degrees in the mission district and our north bay temperatures reaching 74 in sonoma. so we do once again talk about all the changes ahead, so just enjoy the weekend, out there at oracle park it's going to be chilly and dropping into the upper 50s by the end of the giants game so hopefully you're dressed appropriately, able to enjoy that for the limited few that are able to get inside.

take a look at our forecast, and what we're expecting for the weekend, high pressure moving in by mother's day, and that' dry some changes in our temperatures and also the winds picking up, so we'll start to see those high winds gusting once again. we're going from 75 today to 88 tomorrow. so you can see how warm it's going to be and it just stays hot as we go throughout this forecast into next week. mike, any changes out there for the morning commute? >> not as extreme as those changes in days i think temperature highs there. looking toward the roadways, things are calm but most probably know about as we look at the big view, green sensors and the bottom of the screen a new crash just reported on 101, just shy of 680 in the overpass there, it's also already on the shoulder without any slowing. we do have this, not slowing, you can't go there, highway 84 for the last three weeks the

closure overnight and they usually pick it up before 5:00, haven't heard about delays. 68 to mission is your alternate. very mild traffic out of the altamont pass, no real slowing there around grant line road. vasco at speed from the top of your screen coming down out of brentwood, byron, discovery bay and contra costa at speed including the long drive highway 4 out of antioch toward concord. thanks, mike, a tug-of-war is brewing reportedly in sacramento whether or not to fund distance learning next fall. this year the state wave rard daily on site teaching hours which districts normally need to qualify for funding. governor newsom vowed to reopen schools 100% next fall but "the chronicle" reports lawmakers are debating if allowances should be made to compensate for students choosing to opt out. distance learning in one form or another may be here to stay. after being hit hard by the pandemic, restaurants across

california now face a new challenge, hiring back employees. one restaurant owner outside of san diego says she's been in a booming business since reopening her doors again. she could make even more if she could hire the same amount of staff that she had before covid, but she's at a disadvantage due to federal unemployment assistance. >> when i put out the ad for hire, very few people respond. the few that do respond and say they're going to come and interview, very few arrive. you should not make more on unemployment than you do at work and that's the problem. >> in the meantime, a marketing professor at san diego state university says some former workers might be using assistance to switch careers. staffing shortages should return to normal by summer. >> millions of californians are getting an extra boost from the state after filing taxes. more than 2 million people received a $600 golden state stimulus check.

nearly 6 million californians earning less than $30,000 qualify for the checks. payments may take up to 45 days deposit and checks have been sent out to those who filed their taxes through april 23rd. the festivities in full force for the say hey kid. next on "today in the bay," what you can expect if you're heading to oracle park for tonight's giants celebration for willie mays, and the bay area superstars wishing him a happy birth day. happening now, california's dmv plans to stop offering written drivers license tests in many other languages. according to "the sacramento bee" it will be offered in english, spanish, armenian, chinese, hindi, punjabi and vietnamese. right now it's 25 different languages and the news comes after the directive issue last week but so far there's no time line on when this will take effect. we'll be right back. 4:53.
