they'll want to seek out full approval that's what's happening here with pfizer. i expect that with moderna soon. it's great we have so much safety data, that it really does mean it is now time to get the full approval for a lot of americans, i think this is the confidence that they need to go ahead and get the shot i do think it'll translate to more shots, as well. >> a lot of folks are returning to work, cities are opening up, and a question is looming, can businesses mandate that their employees get the shot how will this fda approval play into that equation >> yeah. even with the emergency authorization, we've seen businesses, universities mandating, so they can even with the eua. now with full approval, i think you'll see more companies feel a lot more comfortable mandating they know if they mandate the vaccines, workplace is going to be much safer to return to i do think this will influence a

lot of companies and schools to mandate the vaccine in a way that i think will make opening up our country much, much safer. >> yeah, which is what everybody wants, to open it up safely. dr. jha, we appreciate your time this morning thank you so much. >> thank you now to that dramatic end overnight to a hostage standoff at a bank in st. cloud, minnesota, that played out over more than eight long hours nbc's kathy park joins us with the latest on this good morning to you. >> reporter: craig, good morning to you yeah, this tense and frightening ordeal all started pretty much in the middle of the day, when police responded to a report of a possible robbery incredibly, after it all ended, best possible outcome they could have had. eight hours of terror ending in relief, after a suspect held five people captive at a wells fargo bank in st. cloud, minnesota. police say officers were called to the bank earlier in the afternoon by a manager. >> we received a panic alarm, indicating a bank robbery was in process.

male customer who was disgruntled about a prior transaction. >> reporter: the suspect began to take hostages. other customers had fled, but five employees were stuck. four hostages were released, and a fifth made a run for the door. >> we had contact with the suspect. in every way possible, including writing notes and putting them up against the drive-through window. >> reporter: police and fbi eventually entering the bank and capturing the suspect without incident. he was identified as ray rico mcneary, who posted on social media during the standoff. he's now in custody, and the town breathing easy as the hostages are safe. this morning authorities and the community are relieved and grateful. >> peaceful resolution, the best possible outcome we could have had. >> reporter: mcneary does have a criminal history. it is not clear if he was armed during the incident, and we learned law enforcement tried to

make contact with him in every way possible, even placing notes against the bank's drive-through window. craig? >> kathy park for us, thank you. let's move now to a story that rocked a quiet community in idaho. a sixth grade girl in custody this morning, charged with opening fire at her school in a shooting that injured three people. nbc's erin mclaughlin has the very latest. good morning. >> reporter: hoda, good morning. authorities aren't releasing the name of the suspect, saying only that she's a sixth grader. in a small town where it happened, 95 miles southwest of yellowstone national park, the shock has been intensified by the child's young age. and the fact that female school shooters are so rare. multiple shots rang out in this idaho middle school early thursday morning. police say a sixth grade girl who had a handgun in her backpack pulled the trigger. the rounds hitting two students and a school custodian. >> each of these individuals sustained non-life-threatening extremity injuries.

>> reporter: police say the girl was disarmed by a teacher. krista gneiting's father telling nbc news she sat the girl down and gave her a tight hug. the girl repeatedly asked krista to take the gun and kill her. krista continued to hug her tight until the police came. >> this is the worst nightmare a school district could ever face. we prepare for it. we're never truly ready for it. >> reporter: footage from the scene shows a man being wheeled out on a stretcher, as anxious parents gathered nearby. >> when i dropped her off at the school this morning, i never imagined this would happen. >> reporter: traumatized students and parents struggling to cope with the shock. a mother recalling the moment her terrified 13-year-old called her. >> my eighth grader had called me and said that there was an active shooter in the school, that she had heard three gunshots right next to her classroom. she had heard a friend of hers may have been shot. then she said, i love you. i got to go, bye.

>> reporter: while the investigation is ongoing, prosecutors say they aren't ruling out the most serious charges. >> once the investigation is completed, we will be filing appropriate charges, possibly including three counts of attempted murder. >> reporter: this morning, this normally quiet community's sense of calm shattered. as for a possible motive, officials say it's still early in the investigation, but they are looking into reports of the suspect posting a threatening video on tiktok days before the shooting. some of the other key questions, where she got the gun in the first place and whether anyone was specifically targeted. police also say the shooting incident was captured by the school's security cameras, but the footage will not be released while the investigation is under way. hoda? >> thank god for that hero teache erin mclaughlin, thank you. now to the escal good morning. >> craig, hoda, good morning. things have reached a boiling

mama! happy mother's day. good morning. it's 7:56. i'm marcus washington. here's what's happening now. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez. today the contra costa district attorney's office is expected to announce no charges against officers involved in the death of miles hall. hall was killed by walnut creek police in 2019, after his family called 911 saying he was behaving erratically and holding a metal pipe. video footage shows hall rushing officers when they arrived. one officer fired bean bags and officers fired real shots when he continued to run past them. the city of walnut creek agreed to a $4 million settlement with hall's family in september of 2020. the family says they expect to speak after the district attorney's announcemen i've been going over the april jobs report and it's terrible.

for full fda approval for its covid-19 vaccine this as the number of new cases falls to its lowest point in months but officials are still coming up with creative ways to get even more americans vaccinated nbc's blayne alexander is in atlanta with the latest. good morning, blayne >> reporter: creative indeed hoda, good morning to you. from truist park, this is the hope of the atlanta braves when they opened their gates for the games this weekend, they're expecting to welcome the crowds at nearly 100% capacity. the largest numbers they've seen in more than a year. but for everybody who has a ticket this weekend, they're getting more than a seat they're also getting a covid vaccine shot for anybody who wants it as you mentioned, of course, this comes as we're seeing a major development on the vaccine front. pfizer is applying for full fda authorization, and that's notable. before, it had only been approved on emergency use basis. but if this is approved, it would mean possibly changes in the ways that you receive this vaccine. for instance, rather than government distribution, doctors would be able to order it and

the bus themselves a south carolina community breathing a sigh of relief this morning after a terrifying school bus hijacking ended without any injuries >> i've never received a call that scared me as much as the call i got this morning. >> reporter: authorities say early thursday, 23-year-old army trainee jolan colazo grabbed a rifle and hopped a fence passing motorists called 911, but the suspect spotted a school bus picking up kids. >> the trainee got on the bus, dressed in his p.t. clothes with a rifle, and told the bus driver he didn't want to hurt him, but he wanted him to drive him to the next town. >> reporter: there were 18 elementary-aged students on board. this frightening footage shows the suspect pointing his gun at the bus driver >> his weapon did not have ammunition, but to those in the community, those on the bus, would not have been aware of that >> reporter: authorities say the bus driver used his active shooter training to de-escalate the situation, and the children

35 years in the classroom for barb hine, delighted to be teaching first grade. >> everything is new with the kids they discover things every year, it seems it's the same things. their world is just enlightened, and the light bulbs click on i get to see that every day. are you ready? >> reporter: one day about a year and a half ago, barb's light bulb clicked on. she noticed something amiss. >> on really bad weather days we'd have recess inside. when he would get very active, he'd lose color in his face, and he'd sit down, and it was hard for him to play. >> reporter: he is harrison connor something of the apple of this teacher's eye. >> he is an amazing little guy he is so much fun in class he loves to learn new things >> reporter: the epitome of first grade. >> you could have 100 of him in the classroom. >> reporter: barb notified the

principal and school nurse. >> because most of the kids, they are sweating. they're dripping their faces are beet red here he is, pale, sitting down, and it just wasn't right >> reporter: the nurse informed harrison's mom, then school closed for christmas break you come back from christmas break, and what? >> one of these little guys from my class walks in the doorway, makes a beeline to my desk, and says, mrs. hine, harrison is on a helicopter ride to the hospital >> reporter: what was wrong? >> he was diagnosed with leukemia >> reporter: with harrison too sick to come to school, barb made sure he didn't lose touch with his class >> i always did story after recess time, so we'd call him on the zoom meeting, read a story, and he'd get to listen to that story. and see his friends. everybody is yelling, "hey, harrison." it was like he was there. >> reporter: then came the

pandemic schools closed but in the fall, conneaut valley reopened harrison was still stuck at home and often not up to cyber sessions. >> here we go. >> reporter: into that void stepped guess who. so you're teaching first graders full time. >> yes >> reporter: then after school, you'd go to harrison's >> yes >> reporter: every day >> every day ♪ >> reporter: classic rock blasting on the radio, barb can't wait to get there. the 20-minute drive blows by masks, plexiglass, a shield, protection, yes, barriers, no. >> it was a joy. because i knew he wanted to learn. he couldn't wait he was so excited. he'd have his off days if medicine was causing him to not feel up to it, but we made it through. he always did his best

>> reporter: he's so lucky to have you >> i'm lucky to be his teacher i'm the lucky one. >> right >> oh, my gosh >> i was there, and it brings me to tears good news about harrison is he's in remission another year and a half of treatment, though, before they hope he is all the way out of the woods. about barb hine, one point, i said, do you feel you helped save his life? and she said no, no. she was the most reluctant person in years that i've had the opportunity to interview it's not about me. it's about how this school came together everybody is harrison strong she goes to the second grade teacher, gets the lesson plan, goes off, teaches. if there is something amiss, somebody else in the school takes somebody else's place. it is everyone coming together to make sure this kid gets better. >> i mean, barb is extraordinary.
