7:12 am
welcome back. it is time for our weekly discussion with chuck todd, nbc news political director and moderator of "meet the press." hi, chuck, good morning to you. great to see you. >> good morning. >> this week, we saw republican liz cheney continuing her efforts to turn her party away from former president trump, and that now seems to be turning on her. you have two republican guests
7:13 am
on today, one who might want to run for president in 2024 perhaps against donald trump. what's the consensus on sticking with the former president or going against him? >> both bill cassidy and larry hogan want to choose door number three, they want to figure out how to keep trump supporters without donald trump and that's been the conundrum. one of our panelists noted, they haven't been able to, the republican party hasn't been able to figure out how to promote trumpism without trump and donald trump doesn't want them to figure that out. he wants the idea of trumpism doesn't exist without him, that ace he wants to call home, is that it doesn't tolerate dissent, and it certainly sends a message that liz cheney, who voted with donald trump more
7:14 am
often than elise stefanik, who is going to replace her looks like, proves the party is only about one thing, fealty to donald trump. they don't know how to pierce through this information ecosystem either that perpetuates this big lie. i mean, the problem is, the president's supporters only watch misinformation and then they regurgitate it back to their elected leaders, most decided to appease and respond to them rather than try to explain that they're wrong, and it puts us in the position where we're at, but you can almost hear the frustration in both cassidy and hogan that they're losing this argument. >> before we let you go, on this mother's day, a lot of people want to get out in california. 44% of the population is vaccinated. you're lucky to have dr. anthony fauci on quite frequently. what does he say about where we are and how things look as we head into summer? >> well, we're in goodshape.
7:15 am
i think we could be in better shape, right, and the issue of breaking through this vaccine hesitancy bubble. it's clear, like you know, i asked him, why are we only setting a 70% bar by the fourth of july? seems frankly easily achieved, when the real issue is we need to get above 80, but it's clear that they don't -- they know that they have not been able to break through this 25% to 30% bubble of vaccine skeptics, and dr. fauci admits, look, whether it's himself, other members of the government, people like you and i, key camera, and the media, these folks aren't listening to us. they've got to figure out who will they listen to and maybe the coercion tactics are the way we have to go, which is all right, free beer or what they're doing in my kid's school, can't go to prom unless you get vaccinated, things like that. >> fascinating. all right, we look forward to seeing all of those interviews as always, chuck, thanks for joining us this morning for a
7:16 am
preview. we hope you join chuck for this morning's "meet the press," he'll have exclusive interviews as mentioned with louisiana senator bill cassidy, and maryland governor larry hogan, who might be running for president in the near future. also an exclusive interview with dr. anthony fauci. we hope you just stick right here for our newscast and tune in to "meet the press" at 8:00 a.m., right after us. now to our coronavirus coverage, where it was back to the ball game, at the home of the atlanta braves, it came with an added perk a vaccine offer to every ticketholder. it's one way sports teams and stadiums across the country are encouraging people to get vaccinated. it was the first time the stadium was at full capacity in more than a year. right now, more than 112 million americans are fully vaccinated, that's roughly a third of the population, but across the board, the pace mentioned. back here locally, new details about one of attacked in san francisco this past week.
7:17 am
85-year-old chue fong ang's grandchildren shared this video on her go fund me, it shows her alert, waving, smiling in the hospital. they say their grandmother wanted to thank everyone for their support. ang was one of two women stabbed by 54-year-old patrick thompson on tuesday. her lung punctured. she underwent surgery and now recovering in the icu. thompson was supposed to be formally charged on refused to . he has a long history of mental illness and was hospitalized almost immediately after the attack, currently being held without bail. the unsettling wait for chinese rock space debris to hit earth is over. china's space administration announced yesterday evening that pieces of the huge rocket landed in the indian ocean near the maldives, as expected, most of the rocket burned up on re-entry into earth's atmosphere but some debris did come down in the ocean. one of the hundreds of islands
7:18 am
that make up the maldives maybe have pieces of that debris. there was som that the debris could rain down on populated areas including here in the u.s. unfortunately, we avoided that. china has a long history of letting pieces of its space equipment come down wherever they happen to land. perfect time now to turn to our climate in crisis coverage. foster city is one step closer to better protect the community from potential flooding. foster city started working on the project in october. the goal is to build a wall near the san mateo bridge to ensure that foster city doesn't become a flood zone. crews recently completed phase two of that project and did it ahead of schedule. construction is expected to be fully complete in 2023. time to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda, who is in for vianey, who surprised her mother in los angeles for mother's day but rob, it's great to see you.
7:19 am
you have a serious microclimate forecast to get to as we remain under this red flag warning. >> absolutely, and happy mother's day to you, as well, kira. >> thank you. >> as we watch the forecast, overall it's going to be quite nice, if you go outside, maybe get a brunch in this morning, the hill top areas, that is our top concern, for the north bay and inland east bay. we'll see temperatures today running towards the 80s and maybe near 90 degrees in the dry north winds are top concern for the end of the weekend. outside right now, gorgeous start to the morning, san francisco numbers currently in the low 50s. a little hazy around the bay area right now, before the wind picks up, you got that morning temperature inversion, which kind of traps some of the dust and smoke around the region. san jose 56 degrees. similar tri-valley, 55 in livermore and our last stop takes us to walnut creek, where it's a relatively mild 60 degrees and for mom's day brunch plans around walnut creek, you got numbers in the 70s, before lunch time, and then later on
7:20 am
today, the upper 80s near walnut creek, though hotter temperatures likely from concord over towards fairfield, see a chance of the numbers closer to 90 degrees. san jose about 82, 70 in san francisco and 76 degrees in oakland. so here's what we're watching closely, the north winds pick up, watch how the humidity numbers especially around napa and concord begin to drop off. now, at times yesterday, those numbers dropped to single digits, i don't think it was a coincidence that we saw the grass fires and other fires popping up inland around the times we saw the humidity levels drop off. today as you see there, dropping off into the teens and maybe the single digits on top of the hilltops around napa county and contra costa county. so we're having another push of these north winds today, but back off a little bit towards the afternoon but notice by 11:00 tonight you see the time stamp there upper right, we're going to see one more burst of the north winds at least into early monday and you can see it will be the north bay hills and the diablo range that likely sees about the most of the wind
7:21 am
speeds. so this particular red flag warn something going to follow us into monday morning through 6:00 inland mountain ranges of the north bay, and the east bay, watch these temperatures trending a little hotter. look at san jose, monday into the mid 80s and as you head farther inland, fairfield looking at more low 90s and even san francisco and oakland warming up to seeing some 70s and 80s into monday and tuesday. so the temperatures are going to trend up as the winds start to come down slightly into the new week. so you got numbers around san francisco in the 70s, second half of the week, things do begin to cool off and for our valleys, looking very similar, at least the north wind should back off a bit, as we get into tuesday and wednesday, we'll see some cooling onshore, sea breeze, the ocean air conditioning cooling us off as we head towards next weekend. the good news is the north winds will back off a little midweek but the cooling trend heading toward next weekend. back to you.
7:22 am
>> thank goodness. hope we survive today without more of the fires we saw yesterday. rob, see you again soon. 7:21, much more ahead on "today in the bay." coming up, a new pledge to remove racially insensitive work in ballet. we'll introduce to you the grassroots group making it all happen in two minutes.

oakland, but inland towards concord, and fairfield again near 90 degrees today and again for the inland east bay locations, same areas as yesterday, diablo range, north bay hills, red flag warning will follow us all the way until 6:00 on monday, and we could see temperatures rising a little bit more into the new week, closer look at that in our forecast coming up in about 15 minutes. back to you. >> rob, see you then. check on poor mom out there and make sure she's still resting. it was a busy saturday yesterday for firefighters across the bay area, as rob was detailing. the dry, hot windy continues led to burning a combined hundreds of acres across the bay area. first a fire burned right next to san jose municipal golf course. our own terry mcsweeney was at the scene. you can see he videoed these in san jose. firefighters say it burned a few

"today in the bay's" marianne favro continues our coverage. >> reporter: a hot 91 in concord, add dry conditions, humidity plummeting to just 7%, high winds and the last time a red flag warning was issued this early in the season was in 2013. that concerns richard mathre of concord.
7:33 am
>> it is try. we haven't had the rains, the hot air and just drying out everything. it's combustible, almost implosive. >> reporter: a few hours earlier a grass fire interstate 680 north of benicia burned 45 acres, a reminder how quickly flames can spread. rosenburg rodriguez was using a lawnmower in the area and believes he knows how it may have started. >> the metal blade they spark. >> reporter: rodriguez says on the next pass, he noticed something was wrong. >> as soon as i turned it on and then do another line the section and when i come back with the second line, that's when i see the fire started. my buddy just showed up to give flames away from buildings.stop firefighters reminding people tonight to be extra cautious when working around the home during these red flag conditions. the fear of a severe fire season

in 2018. back to the fire in san jose, that is our own terry mcsweeney, went to the fire line, he posted all these images on twitter and provided a live update. our team of reporters and anchors is constantly posting on social. follow us even when we're not on the air. a triple shooting in the south bay, happened just after 10:30 last night on nordale avenue in san jose near kelly park. three men were shot, one with life-threatening injuries, the other two non-life-threatening injuries. no arrests made. we'll continue to update the story as we learn more. we are learning more this morning about a special city council meeting in alameda to address how police respond toio after he was detained and restrained by police. they say he was found intoxicated in the park.
7:36 am
the gonzalez family and activists say officers escalated the situation and used unnecessary excessive force. during yesterday's special city council meeting, the council took action to quickly implement police reform measures. one of the recommendations is to shift 911 calls away from police, it's unclear how soon those changes will take effect. now to a look at this structure, it could be a new iconic landmark in the south bay. the san jose city council has given the green light for it, but there are both financial and environmental concerns. here's more from our business and tech reporter scott budman. >> this san rendition of the breeze of innovation, th submissions, and was just approved by the san jose city council to become the city's landmark. the plan is to build it near the arena, at arena green, but not until officials studied the

you may have heard statistics that california lost residents to more affordable places to live. in 2020, the golden state had a net loss of 1le 2,000 residents the first time in decades. time to bring in nbc base area political analyst larry gerston, hi, larry, good morning to you. has california lost its appeal and what does this mean politically? >> first, happy mother's day to you, kira enaall the other mothers out there. the hardest job and hopefully the most rewarding. we have lost population, certainly this last year, not a lot, half of 1%. it's not the kind of thing that i think people need to worry about. the fact is the state's grown over the past decade but we didn't grow as much as other people have, as other states have. we're going to lose a member of congress, 53 to 52 but believe you/me we're way ahead of texas a distant second at 38 and beyond that, florida is a distant third at 28. >> so does it mean anything to
7:47 am
go from 53 to 52 house members? >> it does. it's going to be tough. simply because of two things, one, losing a seat means that some districts have to, some way or another consolidate and secondly, the biggest growth in the state has been in the interior, so everybody in northern california is going to have to have their districts move to the east and toward the south, a lot of juggling but that's what's going to happen with the state's redistricting commission. >> come later this year, excuse me. >> there's been talk that high income earners particularly those in tech have also left the state, not just people looking for a more affordable place to live. what do we know about that, why are those high earners leaving? >> we have to fine tune that, high tech earners and high wage earners are leaving the bay area, particularly san francisco, quite a few, several tens of thousands over the last
