kris, a certain discovered dead, a lot of questions with this one. what are you finding out? >> reporter: right, this is a person who was found dead in the roadway, so we believe this person was struck and killed by a car. redd i would city police are not giving us a lot of details. you can see behind me it is still an active crime scene. we are at the intersection of el camino real and roosevelt. the crash seemed to have happened closer to lincoln. what you need to know is el camino is closed between maple and roosevelt, where we are this morning. we believe this was a vehicle versus pedestrian crash. we don't know whether or not any driver stopped to cooperate or whether any driver has contacted redwood city police. what we have behind us is a lot of different businesses, none that would have been open around the 2:30 businesses, we suspect there is going to be surveillance video that will hopefully be able to

use for the police department. when we get more information what happened here and to this person we'll let you know. we are awaiting for the arrival of the coroner on scene. mike inouye has your work around if you're trying to get through redwood city, el camino real is now closed in this stretch. mike? >>ert that, kris, between roosevelt and maple and that's a few block stretch there, the critical divided roadway, state route 82, talking about your alternate is adams, a much smaller street one block to the west, only one block away but as traffic gets more congested, please be very careful if folks you use that shortcut-through because it is much narrower, only one lane in each direction there. south of there through palo alto southbound 101 slows still toward the san antonio avenue exit there. a disabled big rig blocking one lane, a tow truck has been there for hours. everything else is standard. backup slowing over at the san jose area and the bay bridge

toll plaza starts to move back up as well. to you. thanks so much. we're keeping an eye on your forecast this morning a live look across the area. the fire danger remains high this morning, so dry and hot lately. concerning. >> meteorologist kari hall has been tracking all of this for us and kari seems that we're getting to this pattern of when it comes to the threat of those fires, as things start to heat up. i saw in the forecast like 90 degrees today in some spots. >> yes, so it's that and we've had such dry vegetation, a lack of rainfall, and we keep getting these high wind events so we're using all of our cameras like this one from alert wildfire, looking from cummings sky way toward martinez for the potential of grass fires that could spread rapidly, because of the red flag warning. mostly in the hills, but of course we've seen them spread into some of the low-lying areas in the delta as well and it hasn't been hot and dry as our

temperatures reach back into the 90s in some of the warmest spots inland, and all of these red shaded areas are included in that red flag warning, and has been extended through 6:00 tomorrow evening, and we are going to see humidity levels dropping at times into the single digits. we do have that as a high fire concern for today, so we head over to our "today in the bay's" bob redell live in dublin, with an update on that red flag warning that has been extended through tomorrow evening, bob. >> reporter: good morning to you, kari. the red flag warning for the east bay valleys and hills behind me and the mountains the north bay, that was a red flag warning supposed to expire in an hour at 6:00 this morning but the meteorologist at the national weather service extended it another 36 hours until 6:00 tuesday night because the conditions are so dry and so hot as you've been mentioning. to dry in the north bay in american khannian the newell

open space is temporarily closed as a precaution to keep anyone from sparking a wildfire. danny pham and ami takizawa recently moved to american canyon after they were evacuated from their home in san jose last year due to the scu fire. they chose american canyon because it's not close to mountains and figure it's a little safer from wildfires. >> i know that everywhere california is starting with fire. last year we stayed near the sacramento area, it was so bad there, so i choose here because there was the water. >> actually we do construction so every time there's a fire, it always affects us with the smoke in the air. it seems like it's a fact of life that we are going to have to start dealing with. >> reporter: fire departments in the region have been mobilizing equipment and fire crews to strategic spots across the bay area. they've been doing that since last weekend. this week in lafayette, that city's emergency preparedness commission will meet and

the 49ers are teaming one santa clara county in an effort to get more teenagers vaccinated. the team will hold a news conference at noon to announce the plan. tomorrow through thursday in addition to getting the shot, some teens will have the chance to visit the team's locker room at levi's. the first 100 teens in line receive gift cards to starbucks and chipotle. a dj will be there to liven up things up, no appointment is necessary but teens must live in santa clara county. with more and more people getting the vaccine, we are seeing an increase in travel plans for summer getaways. joining me is dr. supriya narasimhan. she is chief of infectious diseases at santa clara valley medical center. good morning, how are you? >> good morning, it's a great day. how are you? >> i'll doing well, let's get right to it. right now a lot of people are making plans for summer

vacation and that is because so many people are getting vaccinated and we've seen a good number right here in california but do you think that we've hit a wall because we're seeing less people getting vaccinated nationwide? >> currently we're having a 95% show rate in our vaccination sites around the county, so locally at least i am cautiously optimistic that we will not hit a vaccination wall. >> there are a lot of people hesitant to get the vaccine and especially parents when it comes to their kids. pfizer's looking to get that age younger than 16. so what do you say to the people who are hesitant to get vaccine, adults and parents hesitant to have their kids get the vaccine. >> right. so what i would tell the parents and their children both is that these are extremely safe vaccines. they have studied rigorously and we couldn't have anticipated better efficacy or better safety. for adults who are hesitant, i would say they need to talk to their doctors about their concerns about their fears, because it is better to be

closed because of a deadly crash. 101 is all open through palo alto. a bigger backup at the bay bridge, slow out of richmond through berkeley. we'll give you the latest coming up. >> good morning. happy monday to you as well. that fuel pipeline that was attacked by hackers over the weekend is still shut down. more than 5,000-mile-long pipeline moves gasoline and jet fuel from texas up the east coast to new york. hackers infiltrated the system and demanded a ran some to undo the damage, not clear if the colonial pipeline company has paid that ransom but it is clear the pipeline is not open yet. as for gas prices, they're unaffected so far. the rest of the u.s. is warning they could see $3 gas. we wish we could see $3 gas. aaa says a gallon of regular costs on average $4.10 in california, that's up about six

cents from last week but the spike came before the shutdown. you can see how low it got in the worst days of the pandemic. california has no gas coming from the colonial pipeline, in fact, much of the gas we use here is actually oil we pulled out of the ground in california, but if gas supplies get low back east, our prices could go up, because gasoline is fungible, that is you can move it from market to market, seeking the best price. gas is gas. now i've said in the past, no matter who is president, presidents really cannot affect gas prices, either up or down. what they can do is increase supply. we'll talk about what mr. biden is doing to increase supply as we talk politics, in about 30 minutes. elon musk was on "saturday night live" over the weekend. he mentioned dogecoin several times. you might think it would drive the price of the currency up but it went way down because he called the cryptocurrency a hustle.

77 and 80 degrees at 1:00. the seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen, as we talk about these wind speeds today. so this shows the winds in miles per hour and these arrows show you what direction it's coming from. when we get winds coming in from the west that brings in slightly more humidity, but we see for parts of the north bay and some of our inland valleys we have more of a northerly wind and that's very dry and the winds continue to pick up where we see the bright colors show where some of the greatest wind speeds will be so you can see that's happening in parts of eastern contra costa county, into tonight. as well as parts of the north bay, especially in the hills and mountains as you go up in elevation. we're still looking at some gusty winds tomorrow, at the same time relative humidity levels are dropping. take a look at these numbers we're expecting as we go into this afternoon. so concord's going to see a relative humidity at 7%. that is extremely low. that just dries out the vegetation more, acts as a hair

dryer as we get those high winds gusting up as well as these hot temperatures. so we're up to 92 degrees today in napa. 82 in oakland, warm there, 85 in palo alto and san jose reach into the low ninlts in parts of the inland east bay. we are going to see some changes as the week goes ahead. the high pressure moves out of the way, quickly an area of low pressure drops in, that's going to give us some cooler temperatures in time for the weekend, but we could see high pressure is right behind that. so we continue on with more dry weather. we'll see those inland spots as we look at spots like danville, and morgan hill reaching up to 90 degrees today. 91 tomorrow, and then we make progress towards some cooler air but as we do so it's going to be windy especially friday and check out the weekend, mid-70s for some of our warmest spots, for saturday and sunday. i'm looking forward to that. mike, you've been tracking some breaking news, is it looking any better there in redwood city? >> you know, kari, kris sanchez

told me there's no further update from the police doing the investigation on el camino real. it's still closed between roosevelt and maple. now, even though your alternate is one block to the west it's a much smaller roadway, allow yourself some extra time if you have to reroute and go slowly through the neighborhood. el camino is closed right there for that one section. palo alto 101 reopened no problems, no slowing there after the disabled rig cleared from san antonio. there's slowing here the top number down the east shore freeway jammed up down berkeley basically out of richmond and in toward the berkeley curve, a disabled vehicle or crash at powell, that slowed things down here that held folks up and kept them away from the bay bridge toll plaza a backup that's forming but not as heavy as we see some folks again slowing through berkeley holding up over there. that's a benefit actually from what we typically see at the been been. if that's confusing i'm sorry.

nbc bay area responds to a san martin woman with a dryer problem. >> good morning. irma maura told us she's been drying her laundry on a clothes line even though she spent $1,048 on a brand new dryer. she shared problems of loud noises and a drum getting stuck as well as her attempts to get both home depot and lg to help her out but irma says all her efforts were not getting her closer to actually drying her laundry in her dryer. so she contacted us. our team contacted home depot. it took action and refunded irma $1,048 so she can buy a new dryer. we requested a statement from the situation, but did not hear back. irma did the right thing here. when you discover a problem with a product right after delivery, remember, you have two possible avenues of resource, the

this morning on el camino real, we are at roosevelt. it happened about a block behind us at lincoln and now el camino real is closed between roosevelt and maple, so you will have to work around that. we don't know who this person is who was struck and killed in the roadway but we are waiting for the coroner, so we know that notification of the next of kin also has to happen in the next couple of hours or so. there are a number of different kinds of businesses here along this thoroughfare and there should be a lot of surveillance video, hopefully if that driver has not come forward to talk with police, police will have surveillance video to work with because it say busy thoroughfare. if you take this route through redwood city you'll need a work-around for some time to come. mike inouye is your best bet to help get you where you into ed to go. >> all right, kris, thank you. thank you for the update as well. folks f that is where you're driving through redwood city,

major divided roadway there, state route 82, el camino real. take you to the map as kris said the scene will be active probably for hours this morning, so there is one block over adams street. take that but use caution and allow extra time through the area, maybe five to ten minutes possibly just to take it easy, a much smaller roadway. safety first. now the rest of the peninsula moves slowly. 101 through san jose the second burst of traffic hit into the sensors and now slowing easing up. the bay bridge toll plaza much lighter as the earlier accident cleared from powell and the toll plaza backup is now building back toward the berkeley curve. over to you. >> thank you very much, mike. so we're also tracking this continued fire dateorologist ka over this for us this morning. kari, what are we looking at condition wise today? >> it's still going to be hot and dry, very low humidity, and

we know the vegetation is already dry. this is one of over 700 cameras in a network across the state that show that we are starting out with a clear day once again, but we also use this to detect any wildfires that may spark and this is looking at craiger peak toward clayton this morning, and so as we go into today we're watching these inland areas, the hills especially in our mountains and parts of the east bay and the north bay. winds will gust up to in some spots 60 miles per hour, especially in the mountains and then the relative humidity levels during the middle of the day drop to 10% or less. with these conditions any fires could spread very quickly. we have to be very careful today and that's something we'll continue to monitor. i'll have another weather update coming up in a few minutes. >> sounds good. we'll check back with you. 6:33 right now. california is receiving tens of billions of dollars in new federal relief money. the question is, what do you do with all that cash?

governor newsom will today appear in the east bay to try to provide some answers. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live in san francisco this morning, cierra, the governor thinks we can emerge from the pandemic stronger than ever. >> reporter: yes, good morning. that is exactly the headline they are using to tout today's 10:00 press address. it's taking place as you mentioned in the east bay and alameda county. right now the governor's office is being tight-lipped what the plan entails and what the governor will be touching on at that meeting. the governor did take to social media to reveal that expansion to child care that happened yesterday that expansion would include adding 100,000 child care slots, investing millions into child care for california and also revealed it would include $200 million in support for career pathways for the home health care workers and millions in state funds to support child care providers. the announcement did not provide a time line or any basis of

where that money would come from, so not only are we discussing that child care, newsom will be in town to discuss what will help us emerge from that pandemic deficit. this coming as newsom and lawmakers work to create a budget deal to shrink that anticipated budget shortfall from the start of that pandemic, as you can imagine in 2020, california saw its finances were greatly impacted by the coronavirus, so in just a couple of hours, we should have a better idea of how the governor plans to spend potentially millions of dollars, a lot of it coming from the feds during the pandemic, how the money will be allocated and how you could see a change in your life. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, cierra. 6:35. the bay area has among the best covid vaccination rates in the entire country. take a look at this chart. according to the cdc, data published in "the chronicle"

every bay area county except solano has had at least 50% of its population with at least one dose. herd immunity may still be a long way away due to limited vaccine access in other parts of the world. bay area health leaders say their focus now is getting as many people injected locally and life can return to normal if they say enough people are vaccinated. a reported reprieve for outgoing san francisco high school seenors stuck at home distance learning in their final year of grade school. according to "the chronicle" they'll have a chance to return to camp thus friday for a final few weeks of school ahead of their early june graduation. the teachers union approved the plan over the weekend, enough teachers agreed to help resume in-class learning and means the district will qualify for a portion of the state pandemic funding tied to high school reopening any time before may 15th. the state is making some progress in students returning

to the classroom, many are not taking the option. 84% of california middle and high schoolers have the option to return to some form of in-person learning, according to state data published in the "l.a. times." just less than half of those students at schools that are open have returned to campus. new details this morning, sonoma county supervisors are ready to approve a new resolution condemning sexual violence and supporting survivors. the measure would strengthen the vetting for new hires and appointees. it comes in the midst of the ongoing scandal in windsor surrounding mayor dominic foppoli. in that case, added a new twist over the weekend with another woman, a former mayor of the town came forward over the weekend to "the chronicle" about her experience. the report does not reference foppoli by name or the town scandal. a drunk driver who killed a chp officer parked in his patrol car christmas eve three and a

half years ago will learn his fate today. last fall, jurors convicted 24-year-old mohammad ali. he faces 15 years to life for the death of andrew camilleri. in 2017 he was traveling more than 100 miles per hour on interstate 880 in hayward, when he slammed into camilleri's car. the officer's mother is expected to address ali at today's sentencing. turning to our climate in crisis, sonoma county leaders are looking for public cooperation in dealing with the drought but in some areas, the measures are becoming more drastic. tomorrow, supervisors will consider a resolution asking for voluntary 20% water reduction, and in santa rosa, customers reduce water usage by 15% after the city asked people to conserve. some smaller cities including cloverdale and healdsburg implemented cuts by at least 20%.

to the high fire danger we'll see today. red flag warnings continue through tomorrow, as we've seen these high winds, hot temperatures, and very low humidity in these areas shaded in red. that continues today. for more on that, head over to "today in the bay's" bob redell live in dublin where the red flag warns has been extended. bob? >> reporter: the decision by meteorologists for the national weather service that red flag warning was supposed to expire about 45 minutes ago at 6:00 this morning. they decided to extend this morning until 6:00 tomorrow night for another 36 hours for the tri-valley behind me, the east bay hills, other valleys in this area, also for the areas in the north bay because the conditions are so hot and dry, as a matter of fact, conditions are so dry the newell open spaces in american canyon is temporary closed as a precaution to keep anyone from going in there and accidentally sparking a wildfire.

danny pham and ami taazawa recently moved to american canyon after they were evacuated from their home in san jose last year due to the scu fire. they chose american canyon because it's not close to mountains and figure it's a little safer from wildfires. >> i know that everywhere california is starting with fire. last year we stayed near the sacramento area, it was so bad there, so i choose here because there was the water. >> actually we do construction so every time there's a fire, it always affects us with the smoke in the air. it's a fact of life we have to start dealing with. >> reporter: fire departments in our region have been mobilizing equipment and men and women to strategic spots across the bay area since last weekend. this week in lafayette, that city's emergency preparedness commission is going to meet and strategize how to prepare for this year's drought and wildfire season. that meeting is this wednesday

night at 7:00, it will be live streamed. reporting live in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. >> 6:44. happening now a hayward mother is desperately hoping for word from her son who she says has not been seen since traveling to mexico. 19-year-old manuel reyes arrived in mexico earlier april but he never showed up to a planned meeting with his sister. his mother said he was supposed to return to the bay area shortly before he vanished. reyes is a u.s. citizen and he was visiting part of the state considered one of the most violent in mexico, where many young people have been reported missing. new developments in the investigation of a shooting at times square in new york city on saturday. police identified a person of interest in that shooting that injured three bystanders including a 4-year-old girl. video of the girl carried by a police officer to safety went viral. police say farakan mohamed tried to shoot his brother after an argument and instead hit innocent people.

the victims are recovering, none receiving life-threatening injuries. it's quarter to 7:00. the white house says long haul truckers can stay on the road longer if they're hauling fuel. >> scott mcgrew, this one of the actions they're taking after a cyber attack on a pipeline over the weekend. >> yes, the largest pipeline in america, called the clonian pipeline, marcus, still shut down this morning. it moves millions of gallons of gas and jet fuel between texas and the east coast, and the worry is a long shutdown could send gas prices spiking. there's not a lot any president can do about gas prices directly, but he or she can increase supply and one way is softening the rules on how long truckers can stay on the road and the department of transportation has done that. the u.s. could use ships to move gas from texas to the east coast but there aren't that many u.s. flagged tankers and the law says ships that move between american

ports have to be american. the president could waive that as well. most people are familiar with the emergency stockpile the white house could tap that emergency reserve, and the epa could waive some of the formulation rules making it easier to move gasoline refined in one state to be used in a different state. but for right now, gas prices do seem fairly possible. it's pop the pipeline could open up soon. we'll be watching it and gas prices throughout the morning and have more on the midday news. president biden scheduled to speak about the economy later today, and this week will meet with gop leaders to try to hammer out a deal on infrastructure, meeting with kevin mccarthy and mitch mcconnell. mcconnell on the right has complained the president isn't being bipartisan but he's also said it's his top job to stop anything the president tries to do. mccarthy says he's in favor of removing fellow republican liz cheney from her leadership post after she said president trump was lying when

real. the lanes are open again. we are trying to get more information from police but at this point they have not been able to tell us much about what happened this morning. kris sanchez, "today in the bay," in redwood city. 14 months after telling their employees to work from home, some facebook employees are preparing to return to the office this morning. the company's menlo park headquarter also allow up to 10% capacity. employees can still work from home at least until july 2nd or up to a month after their office has reopened at 50% capacity. in the meantime salesforce plans to reopen its san francisco tower one week from today. that's according to "business insider." vaccinated employees will be grouped into separate cohorts of 100 or fewer people. time to keep track of what's going on with the weather, also keeping an eye on the forecast for you this morning. taking a live look at our cameras across the bay area right now. that fire danger still very active this hour. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the conditions for us.
