he said he was robbed for his watch and that he tried to take his wallet. >> right now at 4:30, another disturbing attack in the bay area against an elderly asian man. what the suspects got away with and the action the state's top prosecutor is taking to crack down on hate crimes. moving into yellow, the bay area county set to head into the least restrictive coronavirus tier today. we're breaking down what this means for you. plus, long lines, even gas shortages in some cities across the country. the fallout from the cyber attack of a top u.s. pipeline is far from over.

"today in the bay" starts right now. a very good tuesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we'll look at that weather for you in just a bit. first we want to start out with the commute for you. mike, how is it looking out there early this morning? >> good marcus and laura. we see green sensors all around the bay bridge, on the bay bridge a disabled vehicle reported slowly moving toward the san francisco side. traffic is moving relatively smoothly around the rest of the bay. you have to move around 84, can't cut through alvarado niles, state route 238 are options. south bay and peninsula no delays. things look standard for the commute. kari, what do you have? >> it looks pretty standard here in the weather department but we

are also still watching that red flague to the potential of another day of breezy winds, another day of low humidity and another hot day. this will be the last day we deal with this for a while. winds will be picking up, more of a westerly wind especially near the coastline and parts of the bay but we'll see that wind turning more northerly for the north bay as well as the east bay and that's going to keep it very dry as we go into this afternoon. winds don't look as high. we'll continue to watch this and talk more about that wildfire danger all throughout the morning. laura, marcus? we've got to talk about it, because it is so concerning, kari. it continues this morning the threat of fire with the dry conditions you just mentioned. crews in san rafael working into the night to put out a small vegetation fire, it happened about 5:00 last night, not too far from san quentin, with the winds fanning the flames,

firefighters say they were prepared for anything. >> there was no threat to any structures, although we were prepared in case the wind changed directions. we had the height at the peak about 40 firefighters throughout marin county who were here to assist san rafael in fighting the fire. >> the fire was contained to about five acres. san rafael used the incident to remind people to sign up for emergency alerts and be ready to evacuate if needed. download our mobile app, get up-to-the-minute news and weather reports form your area. police in san leandro are looking for the robbers who targeted an elderly asian man, an incident captured on security video. the victim was simply out for a weekend walk. as "today in the bay's" terry mcsweeney reports, this is just the latest sign of a significant spike in crimes targeting asian people. >> reporter: about 4:00 saturday afternoon two hooded masked young males knock an 80-year-old asian man to the ground on

acapulco road in san leandro. a third member comes up but does not get involved. there's a struggle and finally all three get back into a dark sedan and drive off. a neighbor who does not want to be identified came out when he heard the commotion. >> he said he was robbed for his watch and they tried to take his wallet but luckily he wasn't seriously injured. >> reporter: the crooks took his fitbit. this neighbor heard him tell police his thoughts on a motive in addition to robbery. as the thieves are leaving, you could hear the sound of their laughter. [ laughter ] >> he noticed it's been going on a lot in the bay area, and he said he did feel like he was targeted due to being asian as well. >> reporter: the robago family said they've stolen this family's peace of mind. >> pay attention to the surroundings. normally that wasn't the case, i could walk freely down the street and not have a care and now unfortunately it's something that i have toactor in when i go out.

>> reporter: recently, san leandro police released some startling crime stats. violent crimes against asian-americans jumped 283% between 2019 and 2020, and that's in a stay that is 36% asian-american. another caualty of shrye lent attack and robbery the innocence of the rabao children, aidan and alia. >> with things like this we have to explain to our kids why people make certain choices or decisions and why we have to be superer alert on an evening walk as a family even. >> reporter: terry mcsweeney, "today in the bay." a follow-up for you now, a man accused of stabbing two elderly asian women at a san francisco bus stop last week is due back in court thursday for a bail hearing. 54-year-old patrick thompson pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges. barring new evidence, hate crime charges are not expected to be filed. one victim was stabbed in the chest, still in the hospital,

the other is now at home recovering. happening today, san mateo county is expected to move into the yellow tier, according to supervisor david canepa, the second bay area counselee to move into the least restrictive coronavirus tier. here are the changes coming to the peninsula. bars can open indoors for the first time in more than a year. capacity at 25%. gyms can increase capacity to 50%. wineries and tasting rooms can also reopen at 50% capacity. the fda is authorizing emergency approval for the pfizer vaccine for 12 to 15-year-olds, a huge step toward vaccinating almost everyone who wants a shot. the fda is on board but what about parents? here's "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd. >> reporter: counties throughout the bay area have been waiting for thisties and clinings are getting ready. >> we opened up the clinic for

booking last week in anticipation of this moment. >> reporter: that moment is almost here for rheumatologist melissa mcnamara. >> this is our pfizer vaccine. >> reporter: they've been giving vac convenients to adults since april. they recently opened up appointments for kids 12 to 15. >> we had about 90 people who got signed up over the weekend. >> reporter: and that number is growing. >> i'm getting parents asking me going, so are we doing it? i said yes, we're doing it. >> reporter: dr. naraji's two daughters, 12 and 14, understand the significance. >> i'm excited because i get to finally have a more normal summer and my friends want one, we all want one. >> reporter: marin county public health has been preparing to give shots to 12 to 15-year-olds but two more authorizations have to happen here in california before it can start giving the vaccine. >> we still need to wait for the

cdc to meet and then the western states advisory group to meet so we're ready to start vaccinating on thursday. we have appointments teed up and available at the ferry terminal in larkspur in marin county. thousands of clinics are open. >> reporter: this group will be given the same dosage as adults. the fda approval for kids comes at santa clara county is pushing to get more teens to roll up their sleeves. the county is offering teen vaccination nights at levi's stadium with incentives like locker room tours and gift cards to encourage young people to get a shot. meanwhile, mcnamara says she's prepared to give about 500 shots to adolescents at her clinic on saturday. her goal is to try and reach herd immunity as soon as possible. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." taking a live look in los angeles, where like here in the bay area, more health experts expect the city to reach herd

immunity from covid this summer. vaccines may not be running low in l.a.'s vaccination sites but turnout apparently is. just like here in the bay area, yesterday was the first day of no appointments required. workers say the only thing they were really missing was a high number of people. 4:39 and headaches are persisting for drivers across the east coast. a cyber attack temporarily suting down the nation's largest fuel pipeline. the ransomware attack hitting colonial pipeline which carries 45% of the east coast fuel from texas up to new york. american airlines confirming it is adding stops to two long haul flights out of charlotte, north carolina, to conserve fuel. gas stations seeing long lines, some are running out of gas. one man in north carolina posted this video to twitter as that state remains under a state of emergency due to the fallout. many fear the issue could drive up prices.

traffic should be building up right now, it's very calm but we have seen a bigger morning commute in the north bay, no problem, southbound 101 san rafael headed toward the golden gate bridge without a problem. we'll check on what's going on in the east bay coming up. but first we check in with frank. >> good morning i'm frank holland from cnbc. wall street is set to open up lower, the nasdaq dropping by 2% as investors punished big tech stocks. sam amazon and netflix falling 3% and tesla lost 6%. the valuation of the stocks which helped lead the market off the pandemic lows last year are likely stretched tight. investors are weighing how much of the economic recovery is already priced into the markets. facebook wants to make sure you read the article that you're about to share. it's going to test a pop-up asking users if they're sure they want to share an article they haven't opened. it will prompt them to read the

a very good tuesday morning to you, as we take a live look outside across the golden gate bridge span, folks making their way across early this morning as it's only 4:48. if you get a jump on the day it is cooler than we've been ending up in the afternoons, it's been a little bit warm. i feel like summer is trying to creep into our spring, kari. >> yes, it's been here. it seems like we really haven't had much of a spring and we're going to have some cooler temperatures heading through the forecast. we just have to make it through a couple more days of this warm weather. so as you're heading out the door in oakland, you may not even really need a jacket even though we've seen temperatures starting out in the mid-50s. we know it's going to warm up

again today and we'll head into the low 70s by 11:00, that trend continues to go up for today and so we've also had the concern of the fire danger and the grass fires, we've seen sparking all over the bay area, and we're going to see that continue through today. seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen, as we talk about the very low humidity we've had, but it's getting a little bit better. yesterday i was seeing single digit relative humidity numbers and it's still pretty low today but we are making some progress towards some more humidity and a breezy wind and what's been blowing around in all of that wind because it's been so dry, a lot of pollen, but we've seen mostly walnut and pine and cedar pollen. what am i allergic to right now, this is it. oak is high. grass is as of now still pretty low, as we go through this forecast we're starting out with our south bay high temperatures going to see the highs mostly in

the upper 80s. so yes, it still feels like summer again today, and then for the east bay, we're heading back into the mid-90s and for oakland 78. daly city in the mid-60s. we'll see some 60s in san francisco and mid-70s as well and our north bay temperatures head up to 90 in sonoma, while clearlake will see highs reaching into the low 90s. we're still watching that fire danger, but it looks much better and cooler as we head toward the weekend, but it will still be windy over the next several days. mike, you've been watching the roads. any problems popping up? >> you know, so far not really, kari. we have what's been planned, the roadwork. let's look at the map overall, looking at the green sensors all over the bay. i should show you the big view next, south bay, peninsula, south county moves nicely. the squiggly section alvarado niles 84 typical closure, should be picking uhm any second. haven't heard about delays. 680 and 4 into sunol or out of

sunol down to one lane overnight for the next couple of weeks as they try to widen the interchange and we need more smooth traffic. contra costa county looks great for the speed sensors, giving you samples for longer drives. highway 4, vasco road moving at speed toward their destinations and a live look out there for the peninsula, you do have roadwork as well top of the screen the tail lights showed great tapping headed past to willow and more construction toward san mateo. back to you. >> thanks, mike. a follow-up three men charged in the murder death of ahmud arbery are due in federal court to face federal charges. all the charges dealing with murder, this is after 25-year-old black man ahmaud arbery was chased and shot. in addition to state counts they face in february, the 2020 murder of arbery, the three face

federal hate crime and attempted kidnapping charges. in north carolina a man is expected to view body cam footage today, andrew brown, jr.'s family has been shown one 20-second clip from one body cam video after the shooting of brown by deputies. it has sparked several protests and calls for police reform. voters who sign petitions to recall governor gavin newsom still have another three weeks or so to remove their signatures, barring an unlikely scenario that the total number then falls under the required threshold, state lawmaker also begin debating the date to hold a special election. secretary of state dr. shirley webber believes a realistic time line falls between late october and december. >> the lieutenant governor is the person who would identify when we would have the election and some 60 to 80-daytime frame in which the election could occur. >> because the recall is a full

election process, it will cost the state a lot of money. dr. webber pointing out while she definitely supports voters exercising their rights, the reality is only six months after the recall election voter also head back to the polls for the 2022 gubernatorial primary. more details several other candidates are looking to run against newsom, including republican businessman john cox, former san diego mayor kevin faulkner and caitlyn jenner. last night jenner spoke out on cnn, acknowledged president biden as the winner of the 2020 election. >> he is our president. i respect that. i realize there was -- there's a lot of frustration over that election. >> jenner was a supporter of president trump in a 2016 election. she broke ties with him two years later saying that he did not do enough for trans people.

strung together, coming up next on "today in the bay," the homemade bow that put some southern california students into a dangerous situation and the high sea rescue that followed. plus the bay area city that could soon extend hazard pay for grocery store employees working on the front lines of the pandemic. pg&e is sending out a warn being fake utility workers trying to steal your financial information. they get that data to file fraudulent tax returns and cash them. the utility says one impersonator last month scammed a customer out of $1,000 in foster city. authorities believe there are many more cases out there. pg&e says they will never ask for financial information over the phone or email and it will not demand payments for late bills on the spot. we'll be right back. 4:54.
