right now at 4:30, mother nature turning on the air conditioning. take a look, carl the fog hugging the coastline in san francisco. the good news here, it's cooling things down a bit, which means fire danger is subsiding, at least for now. the wednesday forecast is straight ahead as "today in the bay" starts right now. good wednesday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. all right, mike, keeping an eye on that commute for us this morning, but first we want to start off with the forecast. meteorologist kari hall is taking a look at that and a

slight cooldown today, kari? >> yes and it's so great to see we'll be making progress over the next couple of days. as you get up and about to head out the door, we're taking a live look outside in dublin. here's what we're expecting, the natural air conditioning kicks in with that fog near the coast, it will help cool us off in some of the valleys today but we'll also at times have gusty winds and we are watching saturday for the chance of some isolated storms, we're going to be talking about that in the forecast, as we take a look at the highs today, some of us still warm. antioch reaching 90 degrees. compare that to the 58 we'll have for a high today in half moon bay so wide-ranging temperatures, more on that coming up in a few minutes. mike, what's going on right now for the commute? >> kari, in case folks heard about on twitter or over the radio perhaps, a crash in milpitas that has cleared from northbound 680, all the activity but there may be some flares. look at the map we're talking

about northbound 680 around jaclyn. that's by the mini golf course on the eastern side of the northbound side. that is clear as far as the lanes go. 84 is not clear, the overnight construction that closes that stretch between alvarado niles threw fremont and rest of contra costa early drive for highway 4 is clear. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. happening today, the cdc is expected to discuss covid-19 vaccination guidelines for teenagers. its advisory committee plans to discuss whether to recommend pfizer's vaccine for children 12 to 15 years old. it comes following the fda's approval of the vaccination for that age group for emergency use this week. we'll have much more on this story coming up in our next hour. now to easing restrictions in the bay area. san mateo county entering the yellow tier just four hours ago, at the stroke of the only two counties in that yellow tier >> that

"today in the bay's" scott budman breaks it down for us. >> reporter: on a beautiful day to eat outside, jihan bihari is excited to invite people back inside and that has many local businesses actively looking to hire. >> we're actually hoping to bring a bigger staff back. >> reporter: after several ups and downs, san mateo county is headed to the yellow tier and business here is starting to heal. >> so we are getting some calls from people that are willing and able to come back to work and new people that are entering the workforce. >> finish line is in sight. >> reporter: the change means restaurants, gyms, movie theaters, hotels, card rooms and wineries can let 50% of their customers inside. county officials credit the more than three-quarters of residents who have gotten at least one vaccine shot and those who have continued to follow the rules. >> people have done an

incredible job wearing their damned mask. >> reporter: now many of those who have stayed outside say they're ready to go back in. >> it's nice to have the option to go inside, when this weather is starting to creep up, get pretty hot so it's very encouraging. >> reporter: and among the places you can go, inside bars, up to 25% of capacity and you no longer have to order food to drink. in redwood city, scott budman, "nbc bay area news." san jose hospitality workers laid off during the pandemic are one step closer to getting their jobs back. the city passed an ordinance to supplement a state law aimed at rehiring 700,000 employees. it will give them the right to reemployment if their jobs become available again. in addition, it gives those workers extra protections when they return, such as taking time off to care for a sick family member. and grocery store workers in san francisco will continue to receive special hazard pay for the next six weeks. county leaders voted tuesday to

extend the emergency ordinance until june 15th. this is when governor newsom is expected to fully reopen california businesses. the $5 an hour pandemic pay increase extension was set to expire in seven days. mayor london breed still needs to sign that emergency order. another california police department mourning a fallen hero. officers in stockton last night held a procession for jimmy ng, who died and shot during a domestic disturbance call. a fellow officer shot and killed the gunman. he was a fire-year veteran of the force. he leaves behind a wife and three children. this was the second shooting to take the life of a california law enforcement officer in the span of just 24 hours. a central coast detective died monday in the line of duty. he was a bay area native. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd spoke with friends and family overcome with grief. >> i considered him a personal friend.

he was a dedicated officer, a talented detective, and most importantly a loving husband and father. >> reporter: that loving husband and father's life cut short when shots were fired while police attempted to serve a warrant for stolen property in san luis obispo monday morning. detective luca benedetti was killed, another officer injured. >> each of you come to work knowing any day something like this to happen. even still, these incredible men and women brave these odds. >> reporter: detective benedetti was born in san francisco to italian immigrant parents. the 37-year-old spent many years as a young boy in this san bruno neighborhood. ed cruz remembers. >> nice people. very believe, you know, what's happened. >> reporter: cruz says he lost track of benedetti once he moved to the central coast to attend

cal poly, while he studied engineering, but his true career passion was law enforcement. he started his career with the atacadero police department, joining the san luis obispo team in 2012. his dedication quickly turned to his two young daughters and his wife. i spoke to his father-in-law, who lives in concord, who is devastated. he says he wished he could change places with him. the police department's poa set up a go fund me page with a goal of $100,000. donations are pouring in. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." we're also following a developing story affecting the east coast, but could soon spread. millions of people dealing with a gas shortage. experts anticipate even more fuel shortages today this is because a major pipeline was shut down after a cyber attack. it will take a few days to get the pipeline running again. experts say the gas shortage could spread to the southeast.

different view of the golden gate bridge than everywhere else in the bay, at least as far as the other bridges go. we hardly see the bridge. we know it's there. one set of headlights headed south from the north bay. we'll talk about what we see up there as well as i show you the sensors and more on the maps. let's check in with bertha. >> hi, good morning. not so foggy on wall street. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. but we are seeing signs that we're going to open in the red again after the dow suffered its worst day since february closing counsel by 473 points. the nasdaq nearly closed in positive territory. [ bell ringing ] it reversed more than 2% of losses on the day, just fractionally under the even mark. overall the market has been under pressure lately because of fears of rising inflation and today we're going to get a key gauge of an inflation when we get consumer price index.

consumer prices are expected to have increased last month again after we saw a big spike back in march. the supply of shortages of goods and computer chips and some commodities also expected to continue. we've got a lot of pent up demand as the economy recovers. meantime, ebay is now allowing users to buy nfts on its platform, making the digital collectibles side by side with physical collectibles. nfts will be listed by trusted sellers, trading cards, music, entertainment and art. they hope to expand the policy and tools in the future to allow more items after gathering feedback. hennessy is anticipating a post covid renaissance as consumers flock back to reopen bars and restaurants and splurge on pricier drinks to celebrate. the company which owns moet,

>> yes, absolutely. all you have to do is take a short drive for today because we have temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to the 90s today, so yeah, it's going to be a pretty wild across the bay area. this is typical of springtime and as we head into summer, as we see that fog over san francisco right now, this is what we'll see lingering for a while and even some of those clouds reaching into some of the inland areas, so we may start out with some clouds in the south bay, but we're going to get some clearing today. sunshine and temperatures reaching into the low 80s. we have some mid 80s for the south county. we're still up to 86 in morgan hill, so we're going to be very warm there, and once again, some spots reaching into the 90s. we'll see that in antioch but you compare that to the low 80s we'll have in fremont and some low 70s for oakland today. still a breeze picking up for much of the peninsula, and the coastal areas in the upper 50s, while palo alto still warm, up

to 80 degrees today for san francisco. we're mostly seeing temperatures in the mid-50s to the mid-60s for today, and then for the north bay, we're at 70 in mill valley, but 92 in antioch, or rather that's ukiah today. once again talking about those warm inland temperatures. all right, let's talk about the weekend because we are going to see the potential of some showers. sounds great, right? it's been so long since we've had some rain and some of the models trying to get on board with some rain moving in with the cooler temperatures, but here's the problem. if that rain evaporates before it hits the ground, we may just be left with some thunderstorms and lightning, and so this is what the models are showing. some rain possible for some areas like we head over toward oakland, maybe a tenth of an inch of rain, maybe higher for los gatos and part of the santa cruz mountains. the problem is the rainfall

totals. it's on the low end and there could be some lightning, which could possibly start some new fires. we're going to be watching saturday very closely, because we are going to see a lot of changes here. we're also going to have some gusty winds, especially on friday, and then again early next week, but you can see that our temperatures will be cooling off, and we're going to only see those highs in the upper 70s and low 80s over the next several days. san francisco stays in the 60s all throughout this forecast. now, mike, are you seeing any changes out there for the morning commute? >> a little bit of a change, but it's not necessarily the traffic flow on my maps. the big view, traffic flows pretty smoothly. notice one squiggly red line traditionally been there, this is the third week now overnight closures through alvarado niles use 680 and mission, state route 238 alternate into or out of sunol. it will clear up by about 5:00,

heard about no delays. contra costa county looks great at speed for highway 4 through walnut creek, out of antioch so that's a longer drive but notice over on the left side that yellow, the highlighting there novato, petaluma, that's fog registering. we saw it at the golden gate bridge and a live look shows you a camera over in san rafael, the top of the screen, you see that? coming over the hill, a little glow, some low clouds in the background, that's what you will encounter through the north bay. it's not a surprise for the drivers, just use appropriate caution. back to you. >> thanks, mike. turning to the pandemic this morning, the bay area may be approaching a major turning point in our efforts to reach herd immunity. >> experts say it doesn't mean covid will disappear, but it will have a harder time spreading. nbc bay area's jean elle has more. >> i think it's quite likely that in june, july, we'll reach something that looks a lot like herd immunity. >> reporter: ucsf epidemiologist dr. george rutherford says the

bay area's low transmission rates and high vaccination rates will make it the first reenlgor no california to reach herd immunity. it doesn't mean covid-19 will disappear but it does mean it will have a harder time spreading here. >> it's important, because we'll be able to control transmission indirectly by having so many people immune to the virus, so that it can't find new hosts. >> reporter: rutherford says as long as a high number of 12 to 15-year-olds get vaccinated he expects the governor's plan to reopen the economy june 15th to come at a good time for the bay area. with no wall around the region, and cases likely to come in, experts say don't expect covid-19 protocols to disappear. >> yes, so i do think there could be a step wise relaxation of the physical mitigating measures. >> reporter: while capacity levels will increase as reopenings continue, stanford infectious disease specialist dr. dean winslow says mask also still be needed at many indoor

events, even if you're vaccinated. >> it's about 95% effective, and i think until even a much higher percentage of the population that we have now are immunized that we will need to continue to at least wear face masks during indoor gatherings. >> reporter: dr. rutherford agrees masks are in our future. >> i think here we're only talking about mass crowd events, especially those that are indoors, possibly some that are outdoors like baseball games. >> reporter: while herd immunity doesn't eliminate covid concerns, it reduces the likelihood of mass outbreaks and the need for social disruptions like shutdowns. jean elle, "today in the bay." too little, too late. the backlash governor newsom is receiving from his opposition over his new plan to end homelessness in the state. but happening now, pope francis is delighted to resume his weekly general audience with members of the public today.
