wednesday morning. i'm here in washington, hoda is holding down the fort in new york. >> yeah, it is a busy morning, a lot of the big news is unfolding right where you are at the nation's capital. >> it's a good day to be here in washington. this is where the action is. it all begins with this morning's closed door secret ballot vote by house republicans on whether to oust liz cheney of her leadership post, but she is not going quietly delivering a defiant speech last night from the house floor. and in the meantime, the cdc panel also here in washington is voting today on the final approval of pfizer's vaccine for kids between the ages of 12 and 15. >> savannah, i know there's a lot of major focus in washington and up and down the east coast on that pipeline cyber attack. demand for gas, prices at the pump now spiking. we're going to have the very latest just ahead. let's begin with the fate of the number three house republican, liz cheney, and what today's vote means for the future of the party. we've got two reports, let's get
7:04 am
it started with nbc's chief white house correspondent kristen welker. >> reporter: good morning to you. congresswoman liz cheney is now out, but she isn't going quietly. in remarks after a voice vote to remove her, cheney defended herself, and in a dramatic speech overnight, cheney said she won't be silent in the face of what she sees as a threat to the nation's democracy. now, it marks a remarkable shift. in february, cheney won her leadership status easily, but today the votes against her were overwhelming. sources tell us the voice vote was quick and cheney did not challenge it. a source in the room says cheney walked up the center aisle of the auditorium straight through the group that had just voted her out. it is a pivotal moment for cheney and the republican party. >> reporter: congresswoman liz cheney now officially ousted from her leadership position. >> i think that the party is in a place that we've got to bring it back from. we cannot be dragged backwards
7:05 am
by the very dangerous lies of a former president. >> reporter: removed with a voice vote by her republican colleagues this morning after she condemned former president trump's falsehoods about the 2020 election and voted to impeach him for inciting the january 6th capitol riot. last night, cheney issuing a stern warning on the house floor with this scathing message for her republican colleagues, who continue to back mr. trump in their efforts to win back the house. >> remaining silent and ignoring the lie emboldens the liar. i will not participate in that. >> reporter: cheney's support has collapsed in recent days with house republican leader kevin mccarthy endorsing trump loyalist new york congresswoman elise stefanik to replace cheney. >> when you're a leader and people lose confidence in you, you can be fired and that's what's going to happen tomorrow. >> reporter: but some republicans still defending cheney's right to voice her opinion. >> i believe if we need to express something, we should feel free to express it.
7:06 am
>> reporter: cheney casting her fight as a battle for the heart and soul of the republican party and the nation. >> we must love america so much that we will never yield in her defense. that is our duty. thank you. >> reporter: now, congresswoman elise stefanik has officially launched her campaign for the leadership position. cheney also vowed to do everything possible to ensure that former president trump never again gets anywhere near the oval office. for his part, mr. trump is responding this morning calling cheney, quote, a horrible human being with no personality. meanwhile, this week more than 100 republicans, some of whom are also trump critics are threatening to form a third party if republicans don't reform away from what they are calling the radical elements of the republican party. now, just taking a step back, there's concern that the party should be focused on battling president biden's agenda. savannah. >> all right, kristen welker, thank you.
7:07 am
and joining me here in washington, nbc's capitol hill correspondent kasie hunt. it's good to see you in person. i mean, look, it's all over but the voting, everyone expects including liz cheney herself to be ousted this morning. a couple of months ago she survived a no confidence vote. she had 145 republicans voting to keep her in leadership. how much has that support collapsed? how lopsided is this vote going to be? >> i think it's changed pretty dramatically, but i do think that the tally today is going to tell us something interesting about all of those people who have in private said that they have concerns about former president donald trump and whether or not they are actually still willing to say we believe what liz cheney is saying. i mean, that's kind of the message it would send. i think it would say she's got some work to do in building support. if she wants to take the next step, whatever that is for her, she is going to need some allies. if this vote shows she's got none, that's a problem.
7:08 am
>> she has the support, she's been saying the same thing all along. what changed? why does she no longer have the confidence of the republican conference? >> what changed is that kevin mccarthy, the minority leader wants to be speaker of the house, and she continued to speak out in a way that concerned him and other members that she might stand in the way of that, that it might cause the former president donald trump to get involved in the process in a way that would hurt kevin mccarthy's hopes of doing that. that's two pieces. one is you got to win seats in the house, but two is he'll need the support of former president trump if he wants to actually be speaker. so mccarthy turning on liz cheney really did hurt her in this way. however, it's also really raised her profile. and my question going forward is what is she going to do with the platform she now has? i think her focus is on making sure that former president trump doesn't end up back in the oval office. >> yeah, and the question of course in washington, you always ask next is who will replace the person who's just been purged. elise stefanik, the congresswoman from upstate new
7:09 am
york has got the support of the top two republicans, mccarthy and scalise in the house. some republicans on the far right of the conference aren't so sure about her. is this going to be a coronation? >> it seems as though she's got a lock, but we are going to have to wait a couple of days to find that out, which tells you that there are some concerns here. this is a person who, frankly, ran for a swing district, someone who is allied with the establishment of the republican party, and who became a trump supporter during impeachment. she has really switched dramatically, and her voting record is not as conservative even as liz cheney's. >> kasie hunt, always good to have you with us. thank you so much. hoda, we'll send it to you for the moment. up and down the east coast long lines at the gas pumps following that crippling cyber attack on the nation's largest fuel pipeline. more than 1,000 stations in the southeast have reported being out of fuel. nbc's new senior national correspondent tom yam mas joins us from charlotte, north

carolina. hey, tom, good morning. >> good morning to you. the gas station just behind me opened an hour earlier. the good news is they have fuel when you see those lines forming. just across the street we saw several stations out of gas, and in a new development this morning, colonial pipeline has its website back up and running. that could be a potential new step in the right direction. >> reporter: this morning, gas and patience running low at the pump. >> i have been here now for an hour and 15 minutes. >> reporter: emergency declarations issued in four states with more than 1,700 gas stations from florida to maryland out of fuel. it comes on the heels of that crippling cyber attack against a critical fuel source. >> all the gas stations closer to where i live were completely empty. >> reporter: americans up and down the east coast on the hunt for gas overwhelming some stations. >> do you think people are panicked or do you think people are trying to figure everything out?
7:11 am
>> i think it's probably some panic like the toilet paper issues a year ago. >> reporter: cars bumper-to-bumper here in the carolinas and stretching down streets in florida. >> check out the line. >> reporter: nationwide, gas prices reaching their highest point in nearly seven years, despite the spike in price and demand, the white house and experts are preaching calm. >> don't be hoarding gas. if you don't really need it, then don't buy it. >> reporter: but with the colonial pipeline still mostly down, the region that relies on the 5,500 mile system for its fuel is feeling an impact. >> my fear is you have these gas shortages, it's going to cause a lot of problems for people. >> reporter: at some stations in south carolina on tuesday, cars were turned away. >> we're out of gas. >> reporter: and according to gas buddy, nearly 60% of the gas stations in metro atlanta are out of fuel, but these pumps in tennessee have plenty. >> as of right now, there's still -- there's still a good supply out there, and there's no need to panic. >> reporter: the long lines,
7:12 am
though, already causing a domino effect in some cases. >> you want to get groceries, but you can't get groceries, why? >> because i cannot -- look, you see the line? >> reporter: all of this pain at the pump as 34 million americans plan to buckle up and hit the road for the big memorial day weekend. >> yeah, i guess tom, one of the short-term goals is to avoid panic buying of gas. are there ways that you can conserve gas on your own? >> reporter: there are, hoda, and aaa has some tips for our viewers this morning. first, try to run a bunch of errands at once. if you have to go to the grocery store, the pharmacy, pick up the kids from school, try to do that in one shot, and also, avoid busy traffic times. hoda, i've got to be honest with you. i've been speaking with these drivers, last night, this morning, they're telling me that it's very difficult because the average commute time is 30 minutes in america. a lot of these people drive long distances to get to work, and they don't want to get stuck or miss work. hoda. >> i just want to say one more thing before we let you go.
7:13 am
it's so great to have you back at nbc. your very first spot on the "today" show. we miss you. you haven't aged a bit. so welcome back to nbc, honey. >> i will definitely take that, thank you, hoda, feels great. >> all right, savannah, over to you. >> yeah, welcome, tom, we're really glad to have you back . also this morning in washington, the biden administration is facing a new crisis on the world stage, the escalating deadly violence between israelis and palestinians it's the worst it's been in seven years. nbc's kelly cobiella has got the very latest. kelly, good morning to you skblort g >> reporter: good morning to you. more israeli air strikes on gaza this morning, unrest overnight in israel with spreading the nuch number of dead is rising, and there are warnings this could spiral into a full scale war this morning splexplosions in ga smoke and flames rising from
