"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in sunnyvale with more on where those teens can start getting the shots today. kris? >> reporter: hi there, marcus and laura. this might be a tough choice for families. a recent survey found that only 19% of parents say they would definitely not vaccinate even if schools require it. that means about 80% of parents are either ready right now or will be ready very soon to vaccinate their kids. cvs, walgreens, rite aid say they will be ready. the first appointment we could find is for monday. i was a bit surprised how fast santa clara county made those appointments available yesterday. same day yesterday that the cdc gave the green light to the pfizer vaccine. santa clara will vaccinate at mass vaccinate sites, mobile sites, and the county is working with pediatricians to get them ready to vaccinate their

patients in the doctor's office which might make parents feel a little bit better. contra costa county tells me they're booking appointments for kids 12 and up at all county sites. parents can also walk up. additionally on may 18th they're going to offer the pfizer vaccine at a handful of school sites. marin set the goal of vaccinating at least half of the 14,000 kids in the age group in their county within the next week. that's a lofty goal. in napa county, st. helena hospital will begin vaccinations as well. san francisco will have appointments starting at 8:00 this morning and the city's health department held a virtual town hall meeting for parents who had questioned the doctors on the panel, parents themselves. >> want to clarify the emergency use authorization does involve careful attention to safety. it does not mean there were corners cut or we didn't look at

he announced june 15th could be the day the economy here in california reopens and later said the mask mandates could be lifted that day. the governor walking back to modify the state to explain that only outdoor mask mandates may be lifted. the governor offered the clarification we will have some mask guidelines and mandates but is hoping sooner or later that will be lifted as well. dr. anthony fauci suggests it may be time to relax some of the indoor mask mandates as more folks here and around the country get vaccinated. locally they are hoping local leaders decide to make restriction changes based on metrics like we've been doing since the beginning of the pandemic. >> you couldtill recommend it but a mandate context of a public health emergency.

what are those metrics? >> reporter: potentially loosening mask rules comes as the governor faces pressure in a recall push. according to a new poll by governmental studies at uc berkeley 36% of respondents support recalling newsom and 52% approve of his performance. that rating of approval down from 64%. as we inch closer to that date of june 15th we'll, of course, stay in close contact to see if there are any announcements of loosening of restrictions. laura? >> cierra, it has a lot of people already talking about it this morning. i even posted on my twitter page. i want to know what you think about governor newsom's announcement. will you feel comfortable without a mask in june or not?

it's already to see 116 i put the option can't wait to ditch your mask or maybe masks are a way of life. thanks again, cierra. california seeing cases of covid in people who have been vaccinated. more than 3,600 cases reported since january. of those some 150,000 were hospitalized and at least 20 died. they don't know if covid-19 was the case of people dying. the percentage of people getting sick after getting fully vaccinated is very small. turning to the violence in the middle east, here are live pictures of gaza city where the conflict continues to rage on.

new video of explosions that lit up the night sky in northern gaza. earlier gaza's hamas rulers bombarded towns with rockets. they say 65 people including a number of commanders have been killed since the clashes started. the death toll in israel has been put at seven. rallies supported both sides in the bay area. a rally drew dozens in san jose a live look at sfo this morning where a flight to israeli suspended. united airlines, delta and american airlines have all temporarily suspended flights after tel aviv's airport came under rocket attack. passengers have been given travel vouchers instead. the fallout over the

colonial pipeline cyber attacks continue. the biden administration now taking steps aimed at making sure this does not happen again. the president signed that executive order strengthening forces. they were shut down for five days but will take several days for the supply chain to return to normal. gas buddy says 74% of the stations are without fuel. gas prices are skyrocketing but is unrelated to the shutdown. it's because we are returning to normal post-pandemic and more people are hitting the roads on a daily basis. so this is something we all know very well. it is expensive to make it in the bay, but according to new data the perspective of what it means to be rich is going down. an average person living in the bay area needs a net worth of nearly $4 million to be

fossil fuels which is the opposite of what tesla is trying to do to help the world and the environment. this is the second time musk has disappointed the cryptocurrency crowd. a character played by musk called dogecoin a hustle. wall street on a three-day losing streak. we may be able to break it this morning. futures are up. word of the day was inflation as we got the cpi. today we get the ppi, the producer price index. we're not expecting happy news. it would appear the higher prices are a hangover from covid. harder to get raw materials so that's driving prices up. that should go away eventually. the other challenge is the startlingly small number of jobs created last month.

president biden met on his infrastructure bill. biden says that will create more jobs. and out of a job, "the wall street journal" reports apple has parted ways with antonio garcia martinez after a number of apple employees complained about his hiring. he had written a book a number of years ago about his time at facebook and in that book called "chaos monkeys" he had several passages demeaning to women like this one. most women in the bay area are soft and weak, cosseted and naive despite their claims of worldliness and generally full of nonsense. he didn't use the word nonsense. i looked around on my bookshelf to see if i could find it. i could not. i looked back at the reviews of the book. this would have been 2016. "new york times" review of books, that kind of thing, it's astounding they weren't pointing that out back then. would revied

ooking great except the slow drive, of course, kicked in from antioch through pittsburg bay point and into concord. just under a half hour, take highway 4. looking at the rest of the bay and a smooth drive for most of the spots. nothing too unusual. the south bay looks really good. we have seen some slowing there and we do have that car still over on the right shoulder but someone has arrived to help. that will be more distracting going over the water. our forecast, of course, and climate in crisis, what's under the water. right. so we have a lot going on here. let's look at our south bay high temperatures for today. a little bit cooler. much more of the fog as you showed on that shot looking at the bridge. the seven-day forecast is up at the bottom of the screen. check it out as we head over to the east bay with a look at today's high temperatures and

we'll be anywhere from 84 in antioch. 74 in fremont and 70 in vallejo. to the coast some upper 50s in some areas. that fog lingers in daly city. more sunshine in palo alto. we'll top out at about 74 there. san francisco, 53 in the marina and we'll see the highs in the 70s and 80s for much of the north bay, but up to 90 degrees today in ukiah. as we go into the weekend we're going to see some spotty rain. it's not the rain weep needed and not what we hoped for. we'll see less and very few of us getting in on the chance. we'll also have to watch out for the possibility there could be some thunderstorms which, of course, will be bad news. models right now really not agreeing. we'll see temperatures continuing in the 70s for the inland areas. at least it stays cool. san francisco also keeping it cool with highs in the 60s with breezy winds at times.

now as we turn to our climate in crisis, our climate is really showing those signals that things are changing. and we are looking at what's happening just below the surface of the ocean with a look at what's referred to as the rain forest of the sea. it's our coral reefs. they provide food and shelter to about 25% of marine life and known for their bright color and interesting shape. that color is fading. we're seeing that happening at an alarming rate. it's called bleaching. it's happening looking at the before and after picture, you can see the bright and beautiful colors of the fish and the bleaching that has occurred. we're thinking some of the main causes would be ocean acidification as the ocean absorbs more carbon dioxide and harmful chemicals like oxybenzone that is in sunscreen

information about it at the time except this is a two-alarm fire. we have a crew on the way to the scene. of course we'll bring you the latest information as soon as we get it. also breaking, a 12-year-old girl killed in an apparent shooting in antioch. police confirmed it happened about 7:00 last night at a home along oakhaven way. this is video from the scene from the citizen app. officers say the victim was found with a gunshot wound in an upstairs bedroom. sadly, she died at the scene the police are working to identify a suspect and what possibly could have led up to the shooting. no arrest have is been made. >> police arrested two people in the mugging of an 80-year-old asian man. bob redell joins us live. both of the young suspects including the 11-year-old boy, just 11 years old. >> reporter: one of the

suspects, an old boy, a 17-year-old boy, police say they are suspects in other crimes as well. police arrested the young boys in connection with the mugging of an 80-year-old asian man. you could see them struggle. a third person walks over but doesn't intervene. instead you can hear hill laughing as he walks back to the getaway car. they believe the one laughing wearing the colorful jacket is the 11-year-old boy. police said he was driving a vehicle that had been carjacked monday, two days after the robbery. police say the group is suspected of a second strong arm robbery that took place this weekend but even with so many possible charges they say it's unlikely the 11-year-old will be sent to juvenile hall.

california are now eligible for the vaccine. the cdc granted emergency use authorization for anyone 12 to 15 years old. santa clara and contra costa. they plan to vaccinate half of its children within a week. in napa county stmt helena will begin as well. parents can book those appointments through the state website. and for more details now the vaccines are slightly up again across the country with more than 2 million shots. that's the first time we've gone above 2 million shots. the struggle continues to get blacks and latinos vaccinated.

one-third of blacks and latinos have gotten their first shot in comparison with more than 50% of asian and white americans. happening today in santa clara county. the water rate hike, averaging about $4 monthly was approved earlier this week. the money will go to expanding the reservoir. protesters are calling for people to speak out at the meeting on those rate hikes. we could use the rain. a little cooldown this weekend, kari? >> we will see some cooler temperatures and then as we take a look at our forecast in muir woods keeping the highs for saturday and sunday if you're going there. l.a. more sunshine. temperatures warmest on saturday reaching 75 and a bit of a

have to see the guidelines and mandates but is hoping those will be lifted. dr. anthony fauci suggested it may be time to relax some of the mask mandates as more people get vaccinated. they hope to base them on metrics like we've been doing most of the pandemic. >> you want to lift an indoor mask mandate. a mandate is in the context of a health emergency. >> reporter: this announcement comes about loosening mask mandates in that ongoing recall push. 36% of respondents support that recall. 52% approve of his performance. that is down from 630%. we'll continue to keep an eye on what the governor is saying

regarding masks wearing both indoor as well as outdoor. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> i was curious to see if masks would be a way of life for people. i put a poll out on social media. 182 of you say you're probably going to ease into it, the majority, i should say. about 18% say masks are a way of life. oakland lost the raiders to las vegas and now the a's may be considering the same thing. the city's mayor says they've been in talks with the mlb. the news comes after it was reported this week the league gave its blessing for the a's to start looking for another home. the billion-dollar privately financed ballpark would go up near jack london square. a live look out at the current home of the coliseum.

you see it right there. the ballpark out there. karl the fog you could see in the live shot. >> we could see it and it's been helping to cool us off but not bringing any rain. that's been the problem all this season. the drought monitor does remain unchanged when we had the big update. and we're seeing that continue for now. we need to conserve water. we have to make it through the dry summer months. we won't see too many changes from here on out as we go into our dry summer months. the seven-day forecast as we look at where we're headed for today. we do have more of that ocean breeze cooling down our temperatures. we're staying in the 60s in san francisco and observing, some mid-70s for palo alto and 80 in

livermore. it will be hot but santa rosa will reach into the low 70s. as we go through the forecast we've been watching a couple of changes here with the possibility of isolated showers. possibly a few thunderstorms. and it looks like the change of where that system will track across the bay area basically putting us on the low end or very slight chance of even getting any rain. we're watching out for those thunderstorms as well. at least our temperatures will be cooling off. some breezy winds. san francisco will stay in the 60s and the gusty winds kicking up at times. mike, you've been watching the roads. >> we have your slowdown on the east shore freeway. coming down through pittsburg and bay point and really jamming

concord police are telling people to avoid the area of asbury drive near clayton road. it's all shut down in the area, so avoid it. more breaking news this morning. this from contra costa county, a 12-year-old girl killed in antioch. this happened last night at a home along oakhaven way near black diamond mines regional preserve. this is video from the scene of the area, from the citizens app. the officers say the victim was found with a gunshot wound inside the home. an investigation is under way right now what happened here. well, now to the possibility of vaccinating your children. it actually starts in just a few hours. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been following this for weeks now and it seems like it's taken forever to get here. we are at the moment this is a tough call for a lot of those families. >> reporter: right. families will have to decide for themselves but it does appear a lot of them are ready to move forward and so are bay area

counties. you can book an appointment for your kid 12 and up but in a lot of our bay area counties there's no need to wait. santa clara county's appointment site started offering appointments within hours. santa clara county will vaccinate kids 12 and up at community based mobile sites and are working with pediatricians to get vaccinations into those offices as well. contra costa county tells me they're booking appointments for kids 12 and up right now but in coco county can you walk up to the sites there. on may 18th they will offer pfizer vaccines at a handful of sites. marin county set the goal of vaccinating at least half of the 14,000 kids in the age group within the next week. napa county is offering vaccines at st. helena hospital. appointments will start at 8:00 this morning as well. kids can get their vaccination at pharmacies like cvs, walgreens and rite aid. the first appointment was for
