trump for his lies about the 2020 election. >> i will do everything i can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near . >> reporter: minutes after cheney's removal by a voice vote, the former president lashing out at her as a bitter, horrible human being after the vote, trump ally jim jordan insisting you can't have a conference chair who recites democrat talking points. cheney's likely replacement as the third ranking house republican, new york congresswoman elise stefanik >> i'm focused on unifying the conference and beating democrats. >> reporter: stefanic is a moderate turned trump loyalist who has echoed the former president's election falsehoods. we asked house republican leader kevin mccarthy about that. >> does that not complicate your efforts to find common ground with president biden >> the conference will decide, but i don't think anybody is questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election. i think that is all over with.

>> reporter: in an exclusive interview with lawrence o'donnell, president biden was asked about the turmoil. >> liz cheney, mccarthy thing is above my pay grade i have enough trouble figuring out my own party all the time, let alone republicans. >> reporter: as for those comments by leader mccarthy, it is worth noting that numerous republican lawmakers have questioned the legitimacy of the election results in recent days including stefanik the vote to replace cheney will take place tomorrow right here on capitol hill. >> kristen, thank you. as mentioned just moments after that vote, congresswoman cheney joined me for an exclusive interview sharing her immediate reaction everything that led up to that moment and what she sees as a must win fight to restore her party. >> can you take me inside those moments for you when you lost your leadership position >> well, you know, i -- it was not a surprise it was really about something that's much, much bigger than,

you know, the republican conference in the house. it's a moment where we have to decide as a party, you know, whether we're going to embrace the truth. >> you're looking at your republican colleagues in the eye. how did it feel? what was that like >> you know, i was very honest and i told them i have real affection and admiration for most of them, and you know, i love this institution, and we all have been put here in this moment by history, and history is going to judge us >> three and a half months ago there was a vote on you, which you overwhelmingly won, 145 votes to 61. today it was just a voice vote it wasn't even close what what happened what changed >> >> for reasons i don't understand, leaders in my party have decided to embrace the former president who launched that attack, and i think you've watched over the course of the last several months the former

president get more aggressive, more vocal pushing the lie, and i think that's a really important thing for people to understand this isn't about looking backwards. this is about the realtime current potential damage that he's doing, that he continues to do >> some of your colleagues say, though, we supported you before congresswoman cheney you made your point. now drop it. let's focus on the future. >> well, it's an ongoing threat. so silence is not an option. >> you've made statements since january 6th. you fist bumped president biden at the joint address to congress do you think there was a last straw where you lost the support of your republican colleagues? >> i think it's very important for all of us, republicans and democrats to get back to the days where we engage on substance and where we don't treat our political adversaries as enemies i think that the nation demands th

i also think that there is real concern among a number of members of my own party about a january 6th commission, and i think, you know, i've been very public that that commission needs to be bipartisan it needs to look only at january 6th and the events leading up to it, not at the blm and antifa riots last summer, and i think that that kind of intense narrow focus threatens people in my party who may have been playing a role they should not have been playing. >> do you think there were members of congress who were complicit in the attack and that a commission could uncover that? >> you know, i don't want to go that far each time we have something happen in this country that is that kind of a crisis, we have a commission, and there is no reason why there should be any resistance to doing so in this case >> what does it say about former president trump that he will not accept this loss >> that he's unfit you know, that he never again

can be anywhere close to the oval office. >> how far are you willing to take this? would you run for president? >> i think that it is the most important issue that we are facing right now as a country, and we're facing a huge array of issues, so he must not ever again be anywhere close to the oval office. >> but my question was would you run for president to stop that >> i'm going to do everything that i can both to make sure that that never happens but also to make sure that the republican party gets back to substance and policy >> before i drop it, will you rule out a run for president >> right now i am very focused on making sure that our party becomes again a party that stands for truth and stands for fundamental principles that are conservative and mostly stands for the constitution and i won't let the former president or anybody else unravel the democracy. >> whatever it takes >> whatever it takes >> one of the things that your

critics say is that instead of talking about president biden, we're talking about liz cheney, that that is really at the heart of what this vote is about and why they want you out of leadership. >> look, i've been very clear that i think president biden's policies are dangerous you know, every single day i'm fighting against those policies and will continue to do that my view is to be as effective as we can be to fight against those things, our party has to be based on truth >> to be a leader in the republican party right now, do you have to buy the lie? >> i think it's important for those of us who refuse to do that to be willing to stand up i obviously believe that the republican party policies are much better for the country, but i also know that we cannot convince people that they should put their trust in us if we are building our party on a foundation of lies >> what is the hold that president trump has on the party? >> well, it's very dangerous. >> how dou you explain it? >> i think it's a cult of personality, and i think people

were betrayed and misled by him. it's a real betrayal now that he's willing to try to unravel the democracy to get back into power. >> 70% of the republican party right now believes president trump's lies about the election. so if you're out of lock step with the party, why should you be in leadership >> leadership is about leading, and it's about telling the truth, and it's about making sure that people understand how important these fundamental principles are, and i think that that is incumbent upon anybody who's elected, upon anybody who's in leadership to tell the truth. >> will you run for rere-electi? >> absolutely. >> do you think you can win? >> absolutely. >> the trump political team is actively looking to coalesce around a primary challenger to you. what is your message to them >> you know, bring it on i -- as i said, if they think that they're going to come into wyoming and make the argument that the people of wyoming should vote for someone who is loyal to donald trump over

somebody who's loyal to the constitution, i welcome that debate >> are you the leader of the opposition in exile right now in the republican party >> i intend to be the leader, one of the leaders, in a fight to help to restore our party, in a fight to bring our party back to substance and principles and in a fight to make clear that we won't participate in the really dangerous effort that's underway >> a lot of people frame this as a battle for the soul of the republican party, but you're out of office. trump is ascendant, hasn't that battle been waged and won? didn't trump win it? >> actually, i'm in office and he's fair. you're out of your leadership office. >> that is true. but, no, look, this is the i think opening salvo in that battle, and it's a battle we have to win because it's not just about the republican party. it's about the country, and it's about whether or not we're going to respect our electoral process.

should or could be criminally charged? >> i think that that is something the department of justice will decide. i think it's very important that the investigation that the department of justice has underway be allowed to go wherever it leads. i think the american people have to know. >> your father, former vice president dick cheney is a veteran of a few political battles himself. what does he think about the stand that you're taking >> i talk to him every day usually, and you know, i'm just immensely, immensely proud to be his daughter i learned from him the importance of having the courage of your kwconvictions. i learned from him to stand up for what's right people say, well, this is courageous i'm not landing on omaha beach, you know, that's courage this is duty >> do you think he's proud to be your father on this day? >> i know he is. >> our conversation with congresswoman cheney actually, i also asked her

and cities across israel overnight. jewish israelis attacking arab residents, arab businesses in one instance dragging a man they believed to be arab out of his car and beating him on the street at the same time, arab israelis have been attacking jewish residents at their businesses and at least one synagogue all this while those air attacks continued. palestinian group hamas sending hundreds more rockets towards israel overnight israel responding with air strikes. now, president biden has now weighed in on this as those death numbers rise seven israelis dead, 83 palestinians among the casualties president biden said that israel has a right to defend itself but also a duty to avoid civilian casualti casualties the white house is sending an envoy to the region. but just this morning, the israeli defense forces said they're continuing their buildup at the gaza border craig.17 minutes past

it hit her, yeah. >> we're going start this half hour a bit of good news after the nearly week long colonial pipeline crisis. this morning the pipeline finally back up and running after that devastating cyberattack. >> but it is going to be several days befored major -- days before the major fuel source for the east coast is at full speed. nbc chief correspondent back with our update. good morning >> reporter: good morning to you. back behind me is such a perfect example of why panic buying played a huge role in those long lines we were sieeing. this was yesterday, it was completely packed. long lines today it's easy to get gas across the street, those stations have gas as well, and the only thing that's really changed is the news that the colonial pipeline is up and running, and that news could not have come soon enough. in some cases these outages were becoming unmanageable. this morning the colonial pipeline is up and running, but

so is the ongoing scramble for fuel across several states the shutdown the result of that cyber attack as well as panic buying at the pumps leading to major fuel outages the run on gas leaving thousands of stations empty and drivers desperate to fill up won't get a quick fix. colonial pipeline saying in a statement it will take several days for the product delivery supply chain to return to normal >> all the gas stations are empty. >> reporter: for drivers in the southeast, that return to normal can't come soon enough. >> i've never seen anything like this have you >> lines everywhere. you got to get it where you can get it i guess. >> reporter: this station in alabama, not sure how much longer they can last. >> we have gone through over 2,300 gallons a day. our normal average day we go through about 1,200 gallons. >> reporter: the gas crunch also affecting commercial truck drivers. big rig operators here in charlotte tell me they're just

trying to get on the road, in some cases deliveries are getting delayed. >> how long have you had to wait >> hour and a half. >> reporter: even some fuel truck drivers whose job it is to refill gas stations told us they had a tough time finding fuel. so just like drivers are looking for gas, you a fuel truck transporter is also looking for gas? >> yeah, yeah. >> that's crazy. >> yep, it's crazy >> reporter: from full to empty, stations throughout the region have run out of. officials trying to discourage hoarding and urge safe storage as panic buying continues. one agency posting on twitter, do not fill plastic bags with gasoline and never pour gasoline over or near an open flame and as some drivers hustle to find gas, they might be paying more nationwide the average price per gallon recently topping $3 for the first time since 2014, as gas and oil experts say the issue now is satisfying demand >> all right, tom, back to the

cyber attack on that pipeline. so the white house is trying to prevent these kinds of things from happening again, so what kind of steps are they taking? >> reporter: that's right. so president biden signed an executive order wednesday. here's what we know about it so far this morning apparently there's going to be a new strict standard on the cyber security of any software that's sold to the u.s. government. that's number one. they're also going to set up an incident review board. think of those go teams for the ntsb when there's some type of accident, they're going to set that up when there's cyber attacks like we just saw with the colonial pipeline. finally a new order requiring all federal agencies to encrypt data we're going to see how this works. in many cases we've seen hackers seem to always be one step ahead of governments >> all right, tom llamas for us there in north carolina, thank you. when we come back on this thursday morning, savannah's one on one exclusive with ellen degeneres on the same day she revealed that the next season of her talk show will be her last season. >> we chatted exclusively about

so what are you whipping up for us today >> oh, i am whipping up -- oh let me get everything on. i've got a little bit of olive oil. this as nice lemony herbie pasta with nice fresh beans. what we're going to do is we're going to get a pan going with a couple tablespoons of butter so let me get the heat up and get this melted. and into that you are going to throw some shallots. one shallot. and that's all nice and chopped easily shallots are really easy that way. get that stirred up. while the shallots cook, you're going to slice up some garlic. now, usually i like to grate garlic into any meal that i'm making, but i want to see the slices of garlic in here, and they get really beautiful and soft and creamy, and they just melt right into the pasta. so i've got the pasta already going, just plain old spaghetti, the good stuff, good old fashioned spaghetti that i grew up on.

so while this sautes a little bit, we're going to get a little bit of chili pepper, red pepper in here, and this is going to soften up in the butter and olive oil. as that softens up, the pasta is really ready to go because i put it in when we first met you guys, very, very beginning, like 45 minutes ago you're going to use the nice hot pasta water and throw in your snap peas. and you're going to give them a really quick blanch in there so while those guys blanch, and this guy rises up, you're going to throw in a little bit of heavy cream, and this is going to give you a really beautiful, creamy sauce it's just a couple tablespoons, it's not much. i love that i'm hearing all these mmms one of these days we're going to be together and you're going to be able to actually taste it. while that cooks down, i'm going to turn this heat down because i don't want to boil off all the cream. then you're going to grab some pasta water out of your pot
