today we are moving you forward in the fight against the pandemic. we've got live team coverage. cdc is announcing new mask guidelines and one local school district is bringing its graduating high school seniors back today for in-person learning. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live in san francisco. how did the district finally reach its decision? >> reporter: good morning, laura. the decision was made over the weekend and if you think back to your senior year of high school, i think back to mine and every moment seems so precious, the last track meet, the last homecoming dance. the class of 2021 in san francisco unified school district gets to come back to their school to walk the halls at least for a couple of days. as i mentioned that deal involves the oldest students in the san francisco unified school district, solidified over the weekend, in all about 500 high school seniors are expected to return to the classroom. it won't be like what we saw with some of the younger students, taught in the traditional sense but receive

assistance from seechers completing final projects or online learning and the return won't be consistent, likely the students deciding to return may only do so for about three days between today and the last day of instruction on june 2nd. the district could gain millions in funding for having students return before that may 15th deadline. while parents weigh whether it's worth sending their seniors back into the building, fremont unified school district says they have no plans to restart in-person learning but rather resume in-person learning in the fall. that move is not sitting well with some parents, in a group they filed a lawsuit "the mercury news" reporting can t is called the fremont parents for reopening, filed the lawsuit last week in superior court. the group claims the students are suffering academically and socially from doing the online learning. the district told the mercury news they have not seen the lawsuit so we'll follow that

story. both ends of the spectrum, some students returning, others fighting for their students to get back in the classroom. we're live "today in the bay." >> all right, thanks for the la palo alto schools are now offering covid vaccinations for students. appointments start this sunday all at palo alto high school. everything is booked, however but the district is partnering with safeway pharmacy to provide more shots, more vaccine events are in the works at other campuses. each vaccine clinic will offer about a thousand shots. >> continuing our team coverage, today is the first day after the cdc surprise announcement to end mask mandates for fully vaccinated. chris pollone, a lot of good news for a lot of people. >> yes, soon the nation is going to look a lot different as fully vaccinated people shed those

we just heard from our capitol hill team that that vote is actually under way right now to replace liz cheney as the conference chairperson for the republican party in the house. elise stefanik from upstate new york expected to be a shoo-in backed in by former president donald trump but yesterday texas republican chip roy announced he was going to run as well. they both spoke to the republican caucus last night, but leadership seems to indicate that stefanik has plenty of votes. it's a secret ballot going on right now. we'll know in 20 or 30 minutes whether she did win. >> never a dull moment. chris pollone in washington, thank you. >> 6:06. new video this morning of a new wave of missile strikes in the middle east. >> you hear and see it there, the explosions rocked gaza city as israel kept up with the relentless bombing campaign with the tanks and troops amassed at the border. hamas also continues to fire back into israel. so far there are no signs of letting up. here is a satellite view of the damage in gaza, the past few days have called for the most intense fighting israel has ever had with hamas. more than a hundred people have died. san francisco's chief of police doing some damage control, after officers mistakenly shot and injured a car burglary suspect. during that virtual town hall last night, chief bill scott apologized saying the officer did not intend for that gun to fire. he released surveillance video showing 23-year-old xavier pittman getting shot in the wrist while plain clothed officers moved in with guns drawn. >> the shooting of mr. pittman quite simply should not have happened and i want to say to friends that i'm deeply sorry.

>> pittman's attorney welcomes the honesty of admitting that mistake but not ruling out taking legal action to receive compensation for his client. the state's new attorney general says he plans to take a fresh look at a case involving an unarmed man killed by vallejo police officer. rob banta says office will conduct an independent investigation involving monterrosa. an officer mistook the hammer for a gun. the solano county d.a. recused herself citing public arrest and distrust, a decision the attorney general is criticizing. the d.a. says the a.g. is playing politics. accusing him of telling her one thing and then announcing another. monterrosa's family say they feel hopeful about the new development. happening today, b.a.r.t. is organizing a film screening tied to its not one more girl

not move into that home temporarily, somewhere you've always wanted to live. well, airbnb is all not immune to that same behavior. it tells investors it has way too much bay area office space and wants to get rid of a lot of it. just like its customers are working from home and new places or at least the regular houses, so, too, are airbnb's employees. now while we're talking about company's financials, i thought this was interesting. doordash says its sales tripled, which you would expect during the pandemic, but it continues to lose money. it didn't make a profit in recent months so as many people ordered in, it wasn't making profits and the end of the pandemic is coming. cooler heads have prevailed on wall street, i gave you that warning earlier this week and inflation numbers would be tough and they were, and we saw lots of losses on the markets. now an uptick on thursday as you see and even if the markets move higher today we'll probably still see losses for the week.

the big question is, is this inflationary period temporary or permanent? and most economists that i have talked to say no. best example of that is used cars. prices are way up on used cars, because people are getting back on the road, there's a shortage of new cars because of the whole chip shortage. the spike in used cars isn't going to be permanent. used cars won't be expensive forever, one would ran. reason. the same goes for ketchup and paper towels, et cetera. marcus and laura, i assume you're familiar with the story of the guy who invented post-its, the sticky notes from 3m. we were talking about this earlier. the story the way i heard it, he was at choir practice, his bookmarks kept slipping out so he invented a sticky bookmark that wouldn't damage the pages. that story is only half true. the fellow on the right there,

6:26. this is new video of a small plane making an emergency landing on a highway near chicago. a pilot and three other passengers were on board. not clear what went wrong but the plane touched down on the highway, hitting the center divide but no cars. the good news here, no one on board was seriously hurt the trial for three former police officers charged in the death of george floyd is delayed. the judge pushing the start date from this august to next march to give some space after the sentencing of derek chauvin who was convicted last month of murder and manslaughter. his sentencing is scheduled for june 25th. while chauvin faces decades in prison, experts say defendants with no criminal history often receive far less time. today attorneys for bill and melinda gates will take part in a divorce hearing in seattle. fortune estimated to be more than $120 billion.

>> straight to "today in the bay's" bob redell in pleasanton. bob, where is the bay area with the new cdc assessment? >> reporter: not clear yet, marcus and laura. nbc bay area did reach out to a number of bay area counties, alameda where i'm at, contra costa, napa, all three say they are still waiting for guidance from the state, the california department of public health wrote this, you could see it on your tv screen. the state is reviewing the new cdc guidance on masking requirements with over 33 million vaccines administered and one of the lowest case rates in the country, california continues to encourage all eligible californians to get vaccinated as the state looks to fully reopen on june 15th. until then, californians are supposed to continue to wear masks indoors and follow the guidance issued by their local health department until told otherwise. yesterday the cdc announced anyone in america fully vaccinated, about 117 million people that they no longer need to physically distance or wear a

some major retailers are starting to weigh in. you heard from cvs this morning? >> reporter: yes, cvs issued a statement the pharmacy saying we're evaluating our in-store mask policy based on the latest cdc guidance, the safety of our employees, and customers will continue to guide our decision-making process, so they like other businesses at least in this instance have not yet made a decision on what they're going to allow or require in their stores. laura? >> big decision indeed. >> something we'll all keep in mind. >> thanks, bob. governor newsom delivering his final budget proposal to state lawmakers. governor newsom set to lay out miss plan for californians and ask lawmakers to sign off on more funding for struggling businesses and free transitional kind gart on it all california

families. the budget must be approved by the end of june. california's much maligned employment development department experiencing a massive backlog in unresolved jobless claims. "the mercury news" found as of last week, more than 1 million workers have filed claims, still awaiting payment and it also is about 25,000 more than the week before. according to the edd dashboard. california so far recovered less than half of all the jobs that have been wiped out since the pandemic took hold. also today san francisco district attorney jason oudin is holding a virtual summit to address the spike in crimes targeting asian-american and pacific islander. it is called prevention and protection, keeping our aapi community safe. boudin expects to talk about the crime spike across california and the nation and talk about what constitutes a hate crime. and if law enforcement really has the tools to prosecute hate crime cases. that event is open to the public

with limited availability. in freemont, a homeless man is in custody, accused of attacking two women in separate incidents. officers found the suspect, alexander lomax sexually assaulting a 67-year-old woman yesterday near irvington high school. police say earlier in the day, the same man assaulted a 57-year-old woman out for a walk near the auto mall parkway. >> obviously if anybody saw anything, if anybody has any information, please contact us and also for public safety purposes, this person is in custody and we're doing everything we can to make sure this person is held accountable for what they did. >> lomax faces several charges. a man infamous for letting his tesla do the driving while he relaxed in the back seat is speaking out saying he'll do it again. >> it's very normal for me to sit in the back like that.

vaccinated people don't need to wear masks anymore. >> we brought you that live on nbc bay area yesterday but you've been reminding people quite rightly you still need to wear them where local laws or rules apply. but those should fade away fairly quickly. president biden on thursday thanking american for doing their patriotic duty and getting vaccinated. 55%, he's going to round it up to 60, of the eligible population has their first shot in. >> in less than four months we've gone from 5.5% to nearly 60% of the adults in america with at least one shot in their arm. we've gone from stagnation to an economy that's growing faster than it has in nearly 40 years. we've gone from an anemic job creation to a record for job creation, for a new administration. all of this is a product of prompt action to roll out the vaccine and boost to our

economy. >> we're going to enter a period where there will be a lot of confusing images about masks. for instance, first lady jill biden not wearing a mask, doesn't have to, says the cdc but the honor guard at the bottom of the airplane ramp there still is, because the military still requires masks. that's caused a new controversy in the house, because members of congress are still required to wear masks, because speaker nancy pelosi is still requiring it. some members say that's unnecessarily controlling because the cdc says vaccinated people don't have to wear them. but pelosi points out not everyone in congress is vaccinated, so the masks stay on. for instance, georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene has not been vaccinated. the cdc said the presence of someone not vaccinated means the rest of the group had to wear masks.

san francisco will walk the halls ahead of their early june graduation. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live with san francisco with more and the brewing lawsuit in another school district that never reopened at all. >> reporter: yes, good morning, laura. for so many seniors this year has been a roller coaster of a ride and for so many seniors, the last couple of weeks at school are just so precious in terms of memories and saying the final good-byes. san francisco unified school acknowledging that and letting the seniors return starting today. that decision was made over the weekend, in all about 500 high school seniors are expected to return to the classroom, but this return won't be like what we've seen with some younger grades. the students will be getting assistance from teachers on projects and online learning, and the return won't be consistent, it's likely the students deciding to return will only do so for about three days between today and the last day of instruction on june 2nd. the district though could gain millions by getting the students

back and having the students return before the may 15th deadline and while some of the san francisco parents decide whether it's worth sending their students back, fremont unified school district says they have no plans to resume in-person "e mercury news" is reporting fremont parents for reopening filed a lawsuit in alameda last. it claims their students are suffering academically and socially because they only had the option of doing the in-person learning so while those parents in fremont are fighting to get students back in, some students in san francisco unified the seniors will have a chance to walk the halls if only for a couple of days before school is over. we're live in san francisco, cierra johnson for "today in the bay." >> all right, what a year it's been for them. thanks so much. trending this morning the mystery surrounding an unclaimed $26 million lottery ticket is

deepening. >> so the deadline to turn it in, that's passed. that ticket was purchased at a gas station in los angeles back in november. so the employee says that a woman told workers that she put the ticket in her pocket and then washed her pants, describing that ticket. ooh. lottery officials say the claim will be investigated but if the woman does not have the ticket be out of luck. no money. if you want to bet on your luck here, you could do it this weekend, get in line for a mega millions ticket, big jackpot as you can see here on your screen. there was no winner on tuesday for the drawing jackpot so it's worth $402 million so tonight's jackpot is worth $430 million. tomorrow night's powerball drawing is worth $183 million. that's a combined $613 million if you win, and with that kind of money, you can buy a house here in the bay area.

inland through about 12:00 and then by midafternoon, numbers inland today only in the mid-70s, so really no 80s unless you head to tracy or stockton for today. tomorrow gets interesting. changes in the seven-day forecast show that we might see showers moving away from the sierra, bringing a chance of isolated showers even in the bay area by late tomorrow and saturday night, one thing we're tracking as the system impacts mostly the cierra, moves off to the south and east sunday and monday, a cooler seven-day forecast. san francisco the drizzle at times today, may see more than drizzle possibly late tomorrow watching that closely and around some inland locations numbers in the 70s. we go through the weekend with a cool start headed into next week. headed toward san jose, you have to shift over to your right for 680 continuing to follow this, the alert that chp wants me to pass along i'll do that of
