right now at 4:30, a harrowing situation unfolding on the streets of san francisco, a mountain lion seen prowling the city for days stopped in its tracks. we're going to take you inside the drama that quickly unfolded. "today in the bay" begins right now. and a good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us on this thursday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. more on that story in just a moment. first, we start this morning with a high wind alert. right now in the bay area overnight gusts so powerful they knocked trees down on the

peninsula. one person was hurt after an 80 to 100-foot tree crushed a vehicle in daly city. that person is expected to be okay. >> a tree in downtown redwood city ended up on a car there. thankfully no one was inside at the time. so we're waking up to a blustery morning across parts of the bay area. let's turn to meteorologist kari hall who has been tracking that wind and speeds for us right now. kari? good morning. yes, we still have this wind advisory for the next 30 minutes. and we are going to still see some of those very strong wind gusts continue throughout the day but gradually start to calm down. we were expecting some of those downed trees and power impacts due to the high wind event. as we look at what we're expecting going into the rest of today some of the highest winds do continue near the coastline, but then as we head towards 10:00 it goes from 30 to 40 miles an hour to about 25 to 30. so just once again gradually

calming down. it may pick up this afternoon and into the evening but due to the higher humidity we are not under a red flag warning but still the fire danger does remain because of the dry brush that we have around the bay area. so we're watching out for all of that in the forecast. we'll talk about our wind and our temperatures heading into the weekend coming up in a few minutes. kari, you showed that wind direction, those arrows northeast to southwest. we're looking at that crossing the bay bridge, san mateo bridge, dumbarton and richmond/san rafael bridge. there's a disabled vehicle that moves to the shoulder off the benicia bridge and here getting on to the san mateo bridge eastbound 92 looks like this moved to the shoulder. i'll bring you that update coming up. back to you. a dramatic scene now over in san francisco's bernal heights

neighborhood. a mountain lion prowling the city for days is now gone. at the oakland zoo now. >> san francisco animal control, animal care control officers managed to tranquilize the elusive big cat last night. our cameras were there as it all unfolded. authorities asking us to turn off our lights as they worked to bring that situation to an end. now this all unfolded on santa marina near mission in the outer bernal heights area. this is video we want to show you from the past tuesday morning. take a look at this from security footage. the animal does have tracking control on it and is also the same cat spotted in the neighborhood as well. friction over masks continuing this morning, and in a san jose restaurant workers had to deal with an unruly person who refused to wear a mask and spit at workers. >> reporter: this video posted

to tiktok appears to show a woman spitting at an employee after refuse to go wear a mask. it happened at umai savory hot dogs in east san jose. kristine nguyen was working behind the counter. >> she was like, no, i have the right to not wear a mask. and so i pointed at our windowsill which has a poster saying facemasks required upon entry. at that point she got too frustrated and spit at the screen protector. >> reporter: nguyen says she even offered a mask to the woman. right after it happened they called police, but the woman left before officers got there. >> we stood here in shock because this was my first time encounters this kind of thing. >> reporter: masking has become a top discussion at every business and store. the cdc says you don't have to wear one if you're fully vaccinated, but california says you still do, so that's the rule. >> lately we've been getting a lot more resistance of people not wanting to wear a mask.

i assume people feel more comfortable now either whether they're vaccinated or not. >> reporter: a report was filed and lapd is looking into it. he says it's actually the third time this has happened with this woman. they're asking on behalf of all local businesses who have been through so much the past 15 months for people to be kind. >> it's important to adhere to the rules when you're in a business. people are here to serve you. >> people, what they see on the news, things are opening back up. as a business owner, we're still going through it and it will be a long road to get back to normalcy. >> reporter: ian cull, "today in the bay." a teenager facing charges in an attack on an asian store owner in san francisco. some new surveillance video stemming from that incident. police say last saturday a 16-year-old tried to steal several things from the chinatown shop owner who is an asian woman.

he already took off. >> i thought it was friday but they told me to come back. >> okay, he's back. >> let's get you ready. what's the forecast? we're heading out the door to cool temperatures, and they were already starting the commute rolling across much of the tri-valley this morning as we get a live look outside in dublin. it's been so windy these past couple of days especially yesterday evening, and we're going to start out cool and breezy but gradually starting to see the winds calming down and temperatures heading up. here is where we're heading for today reaching 67 in livermore with mostly some upper 60s for parts of the north bay and to the east bay as well as santa clara valley. but then we head to the coast where it stays coo up to 60 in francisco. we'll get a look at some of those top wind speeds we've had around the bay area comin

mike, once again, tight grip on the steering wheel for drivers especially on those bridges. >> exactly. it might not be but you might get challenged by the win. at the san mateo bridge, one of the spans that got the warning and the dumbarton bridge. the big rig is off the roadway off to the shoulder eastbound 92 around foster city boulevard. no problems there. in fremont a new incident just off 880. a disabled vehicle. not a problem. 84 is still closed. not a problem. it's been like that over the last three weeks about this time yesterday it reopened just before 5:00. a little ahead of schedule. 680 near the exit, another disabled vehicle there. crews should arrive soon. more details. no problems for the bay bridge. back to you. thanks, mike. coming up next on "today in the bay" an investment with no dairy. why investors are coughing up

temperatures starting out chilly in the south bay with upper 40s and it's still going to be windy today as our temperatures make it into the low to mid-60s later this afternoon. a little bit on the cool side for this time of year. we'll talk about a warm-up in our forecast in a few minutes. kind of like it the way it is. we'll watch what you've got, kari the on the san mateo bridge, a disabled vehicle. westbound a crew may have some flashing lights, they have to close an access gate somewhere across the span, so we're looking for that. no problems right now, though, for drivers. back to you. >> reporter: travel destinations will be expanding june 9th. france will begin welcoming vacationers back. >> americans will be able to enter if they are fully vaccinated. >> reporter: the french government is working out exactly how this will be

61-mile-per-hour gusts there and then san francisco, 58-mile-per-hour winds out at the airport. in byron to 53. the winds roaring through parts of the delta over toward oakland reaching 40 miles per hour and 30 in san jose which is also pretty impressive considering it's in the valley. so we are going to see still some cool temperatures today reaching into the upper 60s for the south bay. now we should be in the mid-70s this time of year, so this is much cooler than normal. up to 66 in observing. 68 degrees in martinez as well as santa rosa and san francisco only 60 today, so keep that jacket on and it's still going flag warning is because the humidity isf a westerly wind and in the middle of the afternoon when the humidity is the lowest we're still looking at 40% to 50% relative humidity for some of the hills in napa at

about 30% humidity and below 15% for red flag warnings to be issued. so all of this happening because of a storm system passing just to the east of us over the sierra. and it's also bringing in some snow. the thunderstorms popping up. we're going to see a chance of showers today, and it continues into saturday. sunday is looking quiet if you're heading there. look at how much snow we can see, anywhere from 1 to 5 inches of snow. occasionally we get it late in the year, but it's nice to see it happening this year when it's been so dry, and our temperatures will be warming up for the inland areas. by the weekend we're back in the 80s. enjoy the cooldown. mike, how is it looking now for the commute? interesting for your forecast. there's a wind out there. the chp report, same thing. san mateo and dumbarton bridge, the bay bridge as well, all have advisories from chp overnight saying gusty at times so hold

on. highway 84 has the overnight road work. traditional the last few weeks. should be reopening in theright gusty wind advisory for kari. vasco road, no problem. look at the flags moving there. that's a reason the bay bridge has caution for folks there. very few drivers comparatively speaking. a smooth drive over the crossing and we did get word of the disabled vehicle over in walnut creek. 680 northbound at ignacio should be out of the lanes. at the benicia bridge, not a problem. no wind advisories for the north/south bridges, the benicia and the carquinez bridges. back over to you. >> thanks, mike. israel continues to pound the gaza strip with air strikes

today. calls to wind down the violence that has left hundreds dead. a large plume of smoke, as you see there, billowed after one raid rattled gaza at day break. president biden is pushing for, quote, significant de-escalation and talking about soon, after ten days of that fighting. the prime minister is not ruling out further escalation. >> there are only two ways you can deal with it, either conquer. that's always an open possibility. or you can deter, and we're engaged right now in forceful deterrence. >> medical officials say 219 people have been killed in israel. authorities put the death toll in israel at 12. there's a new call in san francisco to help renters struggling to make it in the bay. advocates yesterday demanded more money to be added to the

city budget to help those on the verge of losing assistance after june 30th. in the meantime san mateo says so far less than 1% of emergency funding has been handed out to landlords. $47 million available with more money coming. just $314,000 granted. the reasons vary including some unwillingness to take part. new details now rolling out about muni's efforts to get things back to normal. more routes will come back online in august. "the examiner" reports the focus will be on school routes. however, no word when they will resume. by the way, san francisco supervisors will soon vote on whether to make all muni services free for three months to bring back those riders. meantime, social distancing rules are relaxing out on the bay. golden gate ferry is now
