so for me, home is come on rose. lowe's is honored to save military families 10% every day. right now at 5:00 powerful gusts of winds leaving damage to parts of the bay area. trees and power lines knocked down. we'll talk about where conditions are the worst and when those winds will finally die down as "today in the bay" continues right now. good thursday morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. it's been a busy 24 hours with wind gusts exceeding 60 miles an hour. >> we begin with team coverage for you. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson is live with the area seeing the most of that strong wind. but first meteorologist kari hall is tracking those

conditions for us right now. and we still have this wind advisory. i'm waiting to see if they'll extend it as we were still expecting some of the gusty winds to continue at least throughout the morning. and as we go through the forecast take a look at these wind speeds in miles per hour what we're expecting for today. still pretty gusty out there and at times may exceed 40 miles an hour especially near the coast. that's where we've had the strong winds but it will gradually calm down as we go into late today as well as early tomorrow. overall we are looking at a lower fire danger because of the higher humidity we've seen coming in especially with this being an onshore wind. as we go into later today, we are going to continue to monitor for that very dry vegetation. and i know, cierra, y downed tr of these high winds near the coast. >> reporter: that's right, kari. right now things seem to be pretty quiet coming over that

golden gate bridge from san francisco. my car wasn't rocking. it didn't feel quite as windy. standing here it seems pretty fine, but yesterday a completely different story. we have some video of just how bad things were. we're going to start in the peninsula. redwood city there was some damage there, that wind knocking over a tree in the downtown area. that tree ended up on a car. thankfully we're hearing that no one chls injured in that situation. around 10:00 last night crews were busy in the daly city area. those winds also left a tree in the roadway. this time it was one person left with injuries. crews not sure if the tree fell on the car or that person ran into the tree. take a listen to the battalion chief there. >> the wind is very strong tonight, approximately 25 with gusts up to the 30s. i can hear the wind now coming down. this is a tree 80 to 100 feet in

height and knocked down with c right there in the interview, that same wind also has some damage in the san francisco area. there was a tree in an intersection in bernal heights. we are expecting the wind to stay mild today but pick back up in the overnight hours. if you saw any wind damage or had damage in your home, send them to cierra johnson tv on twitter and facebook. we love to see the damage so others can see what their neighbors experienced. cierra johnson for "today in the bay." investigators say they now know what started a small grass fire that destroyed a home and numerous cars in martinez. officials say three kids were playing with fire that got out of control burning a hillside. so this started yesterday in a backyard on arthur road. the home filled with combustible materials. witnesses say they heard a lot of explosions and then thick,

black smoke could be seen for miles. >> the wind took it and hit the grass and then it went up on the hill. there were a lot of cars up there that caught fire and some propane tanks exploded. >> three juveniles were questioned and released to their parents. as for the three people who live in the home, they all got out safely. 5:03. a follow yum on the capitol hill riots. the efforts to investigate it in congress creating new dividing lines between lawmakers. "today in the bay's" tracie potts joins us live. lawmakers are fighting over that and mask requirements inside the capitol building, i understand. >> reporter: they are, laura. good morning, everyone. here is what's interesting about both of those issues. on the day that we saw lawmakers really mixing it up, democrats and republicans, in some of their sharpest exchanges yet, nearly 3 dozen republicans actually voted with democrats.

house speaker nancy pelosi says the party should focus on getting all their members vaccinated. tracie potts, nbc news. 5:05 this morning.ng those returning to the future. what kind of mask rulings you'll have to follow if you're fully vaccinated. kris sanchez is moving you forward live in milpitas this morning with a look at what's on the table. kris? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, marcus. we have about three weeks left before the state fully reopens on that june 15th target. we're starting to look at what the work place is going to look like. this is today what state leaders are going to consider. they are going to talk about making changes to the mask requirements in the work place vaccinated. they could also eliminate social distan requirements as well. ose and then the proposal goes

through one more level of approval before it's a go. they are in support of keeping the mask guidelines in place through june 15th when the state reopens but then aligning with the cdc guidelines after that. as you likely know by now the cdc guidelines are that, fully vaccinated people can go maskless outdoors and indoors, but that will take a level of faith that people are being honest about getting vaccinated and some people aren't feeling the trust. >> i'm vaccinated at this point, i'm dancing in the streets. i don't care anymore. >> i wouldn't require any sort of, like, vaccine passports or any sort of proof of vaccine. >> if i know they're not vaccinated, i might step back a few. but it's their choice to not have been vaccinated and it's my choice to keep going. >> reporter: so there is no vaccine passport and no vaccine mandate, but santa clara county has upped the ante a bit with a

requirement that all businesses, public and private, in the county ask their employees their vaccination status and verify that. a lot of businesses are trying to figure out how they're going to do that because it has to happen within the next couple of weeks. in milpitas, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." california is hitting a new vaccination milestone. two-thirds of the state's adults are now at least partially vaccinated. nationally that number is about 60%. now that number is higher here in the bay area and this map here is showing the percentages of people in each of the counties receiving at least one shot. now the entire bay area hits that mark about 60%. marin county is well above that, as you can see, at 84%. a follow-up for you now. winston mayor may be on the outs with town councilmembers, but it's not stopping him from trying to retain his position. >> can you hear me, mayor

dominic? >> i didn't hear that. >> he briefly made a remote appearance during last night's town council meeting. "the press democrat" reports he's fulfilling a pledge to do so at least once every 60 days to avoid having his office be declared vacant. he did not stay past the call to order. the state is currently investigating allegations of sexual assault raised by more than half a dozen women and organizers are still gathering signatures for a recall. some news bay area fathers may love, no close dancing at prom if it's happening in san francisco. teenagers who are not vaccinate willed have to stay six feet apart. indoor events will of vaccination or a negative covid test and mask, but no mask for outdoor dances. in normal years san francisco hosts prom for high schools across the bay area. so keep away, keep your

trend for this morning looks a little chilly out there especially with the breezy winds. as we go into today we start out with some upper 40s but heading to the low 60s by late morning, making it into the upper 60s. a little bit cool for this time of year. we'll talk more about that. the wind and the weekend forecast coming up. and breaking news for walnut creek, they may have cleared this incident earlier than the expected hour blocking one lane am we'll follow that. i had to show you this beautiful shot. there's no problems on the golden gate bridge, but that international orange looks great with that sun coming up. we'll track the traffic and see how great that looks coming up. good morning. very happy thursday to you as well. another tough day on the markets. let's take a look at the futures calling for a lower opening this morning. investors worry about inflation. there are hints in the notes from the latest fed meeting just released the federal open

markets committee may be open to relaxing some of its efforts to help the economy. that's pushing markets lower. on wednesday the dow fell just a half a percent, but the nasdaq barely budged. the point here is losses on the market today would be four in a row and that would be unusual. the real loss is coming in cryptocurrency. bitcoin is down to $40,000 a coin. that's about 40% off from its all-time highs. did you hear about that wobbling skyscraper in shenzhen? i'm surprised by the number of people i've talked to have been there, worked there. then again shenzhen is where so many of our gadgets are made. the tower was briefly evacuated after it wobbled and now u.s. citizens are told to not go inside. colonial pipeline is open, someone who can oversee the development of a cyber security

program. and ford officially rolled out its new electric ford f-150 pickup truck. we got a sneak peek when president biden peeled out across the parking lot. ford figuring, well, it was a day early but if the president wants to drive a truck he can drive a truck. the f-150 has 563 horsepower, 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds. this would be an interesting move into the electric car market. you don't think of pickup trucks being electric, but there's no reason they shouldn't be. it gives them a tremendous a.m. of torque and pulling power, so why not? >> my pops would love that vehicle, trust me. i know that for sure. >> just have to have the plug-in capacity at some of the farms to use them. >> that, too. new this morning, we're learning just how big a hit wine country is taking from the pandemic and the recent

wildfires. according to a new report the value of napa county's wine crops dropped to 460 million in 2020. the reduction increased by 60,000 tons. the agricultural commissioner says the wildfires last year had the most impact. trending right now the one where you realize this is really happening. >> yeah. >> in this case the previews letting all "friends" fans know it's on. >> rachel wrote ross a letter and demanded he read it before they got back together. how many pages of that letter? >> 18 pages. >> 18 pages -- >> front and back! >> front and back. >> you see it there. the official preview of the "friends" reunion. hbo max dropped it yesterday. all your favorite characters are back, the entire cast seen on the soundstage playing a trivia game. i bet many of the fans can

answer those questions, too. we're also learning about cameos coming from the likes of reese witherspoon, lady gaga. it premieres one week from today and it will be there to view. >> very cool. just have to find the time to watch it now. >> absolutely. maybe getting up early, heading out the door, getting on that morning commute will help. let's check in with mike right now. >> i think we have some good news. out to the maps. the first bit of news you'll notice no red squigglies. the peninsula and the south bay, silicon valley looks great as it should. highway 84 is green now as it reopens from the overnight low. a little build, 84. the issue at walnut creek i've circled there looks like it may be cleared from the roadway.

the disabled vehicle were able to get the car moving. building a little bit but over on the right side look at the flags really moving. chp says the bay bridge, the dumbarton bridge and san mateo bridge should get gusty winds. you are on the same page. good. yeah. and the national weather service allowed that wind advisory to expire so the winds are calming down just enough. it's still pretty breezy. take a look at the top wind gusts reaching 61 miles an hour through the altamont pace and san francisco had a wind gust of 58 miles an hour at the airport. byron, 53 there. oakland, 40. and 30 in san jose. so it was very windy and it still looks to be pretty windy as we go through this forecast. look at the afternoon as we look at san francisco, we could still

see the 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts. it's going to be very high especially near the coastline today. some of the valleys get a lighter wind but still pretty breezy going into today. but then calming down by tomorrow. we've been watching these wind speeds because we know that the brush is extremely dry at this point and any sparks could spread quickly with the winds rushing by. the good thing is that the hume has been higher and that slows how fast the fires spread. no quickly moving fires. take a look at the temperatures reaching the upper 60s. this is all happening because of a storm system passing to the east of us. we're just seeing clear skies, but it is raining off and on in the sierra and that will continue the next couple of days, even some snow in the upper elevations. that's great to see. as our temperatures reach into the low 70s, we'll gradually warm up heading to the end of the weekend while san francisco will see some of those temperatures staying in the 60s and gusty at times. now let's bring in our

new details of an 11-year-old girl this morning speaking about how her quick thinking led to the arrest of a man now accused of trying to kidnap her.

>> we showed you that story yesterday, that video out of pensacola, florida, showing the girl fighting off the man trying to kidnap her. she was able to break free and coat the man's hands in that area with blue slime that she had on her hands. this is so police knew when they caught him they got the right suspect. this morning she's talking about that on the "today" show. >> you knew if you put some of that blue slime on him that what? that the detectives would identify him? >> yes. they would have better evidence. that would be better evidence. >> you were thinking about all of this while it was going on? >> yes. >> quick thinking. so the suspect is now facing charges including attempted kidnapping of a child and aggravated assault. can you watch that entire interview on the "today" show at 7:00 a.m. right after "today in the bay." >> wow, i guess she learned it. interesting. top stories we're following today including muni bringing back new routes geared towards

francisco, a mountain lion seen prowling the city for days stopped in its tracks. we'll take you inside the drama that unfolded and where that cat is now. "today in the bay" continues right now. and a good thursday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we'll get to that story in just a moment. first the howling overnight winds. a large tree came down crashing on a car. it happened near the mall. the driver actually suffered some minor injuries. the car, of course, has major damage. >> in redwood city another tree coming down on a vehicle. take a look at this near downtown. no one was hurt but the driver of that car tells us it was a rental. in milpitas you can see the flag whipping in the wind. meteorologist kari hall has been tracking the winds and the speeds. how is it looking for us this

morning? it was so gusty yesterday evening. we are starting to see the wind calm down just a bit. let's take a look at the top wind gusts we had from the past 24 hours and got up to 61 miles an hour through the altamont pass. san francisco had a wind gust of 58 miles an hour. you can see why some of the trees came down and even rushing through the delta a 53-mile-per-hour gust. oakland, 40-mile-per-hour winds and even in the valleys we had winds at 30 miles per hour. now the wind advisory has expired but it's still going to be a breezy day. we'll talk more about that in the forecast. an update coming up in a few minutes. thanks so much, kari. 5:32. a mountain lion causing quite a stir this week in san francisco. became a video sensation. it's now been removed, however, from the neighborhood. >> "today in the bay's" bob

redell live across the bay at observing zoo. this is where authorities took the cat last night, bob. >> reporter: correct, marcus and laura. the oakland zoo agreed to accept the mountain lion and to take care of it until a decision is made on what to do with it. the mountain lion was spotted yesterday morning as you can see in this photo taken by a neighbor who lives in the bernal heights neighborhood spotted in a tree. animal control believes this is the same mountain lion spotted twice before. they tranquilized the lion with a dart as it sat inside a tree outside a house. eventually the big cat jumps down, went on to a front porch where it hung out and eventually passed out. the officers were able to retrieve it and take it to the oakland zoo. >> so i came downstairs to take the garbage out and i got about

three steps down and there was a man sitting in the car out here who looked at me get back inside, there's a the tree. and i thought it was a joke, but i went back inside and, sure enough, police showed up. animal control, i guess, and it became a whole scene. it was very exciting. not what you expect when you move to the city. >> reporter: fish and wildlife tells us it is a young male, 1 is 20 pounds. it is wearing a tracking device. they do not know why it came into the neighborhood. as i mentioned it was sighted twice tuesday morning, once by someone's surveillance camera in the 3:00 hour and another time later that morning by someone near bernal heights. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> everyone saying it was a cool sight. cool because no one was hurt. thanks, bob. >> that mountain lion waking up

a little groggy this morning. the fallout over mask rules is reaching a new level at a south bay restaurant. take a look. a customer reportedly refused to wear a mask and spit at workers. it happened at umai savory hot dogs in east san jose. an employee described what happened. >> and she was like, no, itch the right to not wear a mask. and so i pointed at our windowsill which has a poster saying facemasks required upon entry. she got frustrated and spit at the screen protector. >> workers say they've had prior run-ins with the same customer. the mask confusion is lingering after the cdc said vaccinated people can take them off but california's mask rules are still in effect until the state fully reopens next month. new this morning a teenager now facing charges in connection with an attack on an asian store owner in sanfrancisco.

so we have some new surveillance video stemming last saturday 16-year-old tried to steal several smartphone cases from the china shop owner who was an asian woman. that's when he allegedly hit her in the face and took off. several hours later he returned and sprayed the owner in the face with what she believes was pepper spray. after reviewing the surveillance video investigators recognized the suspect from the neighborhood. nbc bay area's own raj mathai is leading a summit surrounding the challenges the asian pacific islander communities are facing today. the asian pacific fund virtual summit starts this morning and you can help the efforts to stop the hate. nbc bay area, telemundo 48 and our parent company comcast will be partnered with the bay-area based asian pacific fund and your efforts have helped raise more than a million dollars. if you want to help and continue to donate we've add did a link.

the trial over the massive covid outbreak that struck san quentin prison. they are accused of mishandling the transferring of infected inmates during the pandemic. 29 inmates and one staff member were killed due to covid-19. the number of infections at the prison during the pandemic exceeded 2,200. the hearing is expected to last several weeks. there's a new call in san francisco to help renters struggling to make it in the bay. advocates demanded more money be added to the city budget to help those on the verge of losing assistance after june 30th. san mateo county leaders say so far less than 1% of available emergency funding has been handed out to struggling renters and landlords. the county had $47 million available with more money coming in.

$314,000 has been granted. the reasons vary including s unwillingness, they say, by landlords to take part. new details now on muni's return to normalcy. more routes will come back online in august. "the examiner" reporting the focus will be on school routes. however, no word on when the aboveground l or the m ocean view lines will resume. those will be a huge boost for san francisco students of san francisco state who return august 23rd. san francisco supervisors will soon vote on whether to make all muni free for three months to track more riders. social distancing rules, they're relaxing out on the bay. golden gate ferry now requiring three feet of distance between passengers instead of six. it's 5:38 right now. i have been loving the weather lately. it's so great to get out and about and do a little movement, a little exercise. kari has a look at our forecast for today.

maybe a peek at the weekend, too? yes, and it's going to be a great weekend. let's head to napa valley as we check out some of those high temperatures. does it get any more perfect than this? the mid-70s and sunshine, upper 70s by sunday, and it's also going to be nice and breezy. so that makes it great for enjoying more time in the sunshine. we're going to see temperatures comfortable along the coastline. if you're going to santa cruz expect mid-60s throughout the weekend, just a few clouds here and there. watch out for those showers, possibly even some snow in the upper elevations for tahoe and for l.a. we're going to see temperatures reaching into the 70s so our nice weather does continue. we'll talk more about our forecast and those winds. mike, how is it looking driving to work? kari, the early drive through contra costa county, highway 4 looks great right now. show you the general map taking you to walnut creek, northbound

good thursday morning. it is 5:43. let's get you ready for work in oakland this morning as you get ready to head out. cool and breezy. we're starting out at about 48 degrees. yes, a heavier jacket but we'll still see the jacket weather continue throughout much of the morning. as we stay on the cool side what's ahead for the weekend in a few minutes. and we're looking at a smooth build. we still have the crash in san pablo west 80. still no lane information on that crash. things do look smooth past that scene and at the bay bridge a little bit of a build as far as the volume of traffic and a lot of movement for these flags still breezy across the span. just keep that in mind. thanks so much.

it is 5:44 right now. breaking news, the recent jobs report is out and some good news as the country recovers from the shutdown. first-time claims dropped to 444,000. that's actually a low for the pandemic. fewer than analysts expected. continuing claims rose slightly to about 3.7 million. despite the good jobs report markets are still pointing lower this morning. israel continues to pound the gaza strip with air strikes despite calls from the u.s. to wind down the violence that has left hundreds dead. now that large plume of smoke could be seen for miles billowing after a raid rattled gaza at day break. president biden pushing for, quote, significant de-escalation. this is after ten days of heavy fighting, but israel's prime minister not ruling out further escalation of the conflict in gaza.

rosa through oakland and down to the tri-valley. this is definitely an emergency situation here. this is what exceptional drought means for you, that we have a year round fire season and that we are going to have very low water levels, fields will be left fallow where we see a lot of irrigation needed and those water levels are so low it's hard to find anywhere to get that and that makes food prices rise. water becomes a lot more expensive as well and then as we go through the summer poor air quality. when we think what that means for our agriculture and how much of the food we make for the rest of the country. this does not just affect california. this is going to affect the whole country as we make 90% of the country's wine and also some very high amounts of the nuts, fruits and vegetables. this is something we'll continue to watch for today. we'll have more updates throughout the morning, but our

temperatures at least are right now very chilly and it's been also nice to see some of the showers that we've seen moving through parts of the sierra causing those gusty winds. we're going to watch the rain chances continue there as well. let's head over to mike now. you have an update on the morning commute. yeah, kari, but thank you for that unfortunate update about the drought. we know it's dry out here. look at the roadways, folks, a smooth drive right now. watch for that snow as kari talked about. wow, that's a big contrast in reports. some early slowing, just started to clear and shows up on our sensors as well. you see the orange lights, not flashing. don't worry about that. i circled the area. there is still the alert on 680 at ignacio. we see a tad bit of slowing and build there and also at the bay bridge toll plaza a little bit of slowing as folks approach the left edge of the screen there.

meteorologist kari hall is tracking fire danger as "today in the bay" continues right now. she has some interesting new drought information. good thursday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. speaking of that drought condition, kari, what have you been seeing? i know it's just coming out this morning. yeah, just came out a few minutes ago and it is showing that we are at the highest level of drought here in the bay area now. that coming along with some gusty winds that we've seen over the past 24 hours at times gusting over 60 miles per hour coming through the altamont pass. byron had a wind gust of 53 miles an hour and just got off the screen there but 40 for oakland and 30 miles per hour wind gusts for san jose and once again the drought emergency continues as we're seeing more of the dark red showing the exceptional drought spreading across california. we will talk more about that. but let's head over to cierra

johnson live with a look at the tree damage and some of the other wind impacts we've had from this wind storm that blew through. cierra? >> reporter: yes, good morning, kari. right now all is calm on the other side of the golden gate bridge. things are quiet but a completely different story this time yesterday and into the afternoon hours. take a look at your screen. crews throughout the bay area capturing some of that damage. crews were busy in daly city. the winds left a tree down on a roadway. one person there was left with minor injuries. first responders aren't sure if it's because the tree fell onto the car or the car crashed into the tree, but take a listen to what they had to say about the strong winds. >> the wind is very strong tonight, blowing approximately 25 with higher gusts up in the 30s.
