5:02 am
>> reporter: good morning to you, laura. folks around the bay area are showing up at their local pharmacies like this rite aid in santa clara rolling up their sleeves, getting their first doses, their second doses and now we have a better idea of when we might need that booster shot. front line workers got their first round of the authorized pfizer vaccines in january, and then they will need the first round of boosters if it becomes necessary. according to the heads of both pfizer and moderna, the boosters may be needed around september, though dr. anthony fauci says it could be later than that. >> likely there would be a need for a booster somewhere between 8 and 12 months but that remains to be seen. >> we know vaccine durability of the efficacy lasts at least six months and likely considerably more, but i think we will almost certainly require a booster sometime within a year or so.
5:03 am
>> reporter: you might be thinking, come on, i just got my second dose. i'm into the even fully vaccinated yet. it is an easier process because there won't be a bottleneck for booster shots, should we need them. three vaccines are available and the supply and distribution chains are more robust, and because we rolled up our sleeves at different times, we all won't be showing up at the same time for a booster shot. in santa clara county, 75% of people 16 years and up are now at least partially vaccinated. we are ahead of the nation right now, 60% of americans are partially vaccinated. the president's goal is 70% by the fourth of july. in santa clara, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> okay. we've got numbers here as well because at least half of adults in 19 states are fully vaccinated. the data was cited by "the mercury news" but did not include california, this comes as experts say the vaccination rates are slowing nationwide.
5:04 am
cdc data indicates 38% of the u.s. population is fully vaccinated. developing now, take a look at this video from boston's logan international airport, look at the many places where airline passengers were dealing with travel headaches this morning. major technical issue forced a delay of flights around the nation. the firm saver confirming it experienced outages impacting american and jetblue airlines. i want to show you video taken by a woman waiting at lax, she says that her travel plans will be put on hold for hours because of this snafu. many passengers taking to twitter to express frustrations. there will be some residual flight delays because of all of this delay. developing now, after two weeks of bloodshed a cease-fire has been called between israel and hamas. 5:10 am
cool for the next few hours, and then fairly mild for the middle of the day, as we check out our temperatures across all of our microclimates that's going to be 70s for later today. we'll talk about the weekend coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute to work? >> well, kari, as marcus eloquently said, it's friday so folks do like to as you know pack up right on time or maybe a little early to get out of there. we look at your map at 84, the construction crew there was able to get out and clear the roadway before 5:00 and so that's great news if you're headed for alvarado niles and rest of the bay great drive. tracking 101 at old middlefield road, watch out and roadside fire, a tent and a bush and a tree i believe, south 101 over at story road. we have no problem now that the earlier disabled vehicle cleared from the bay bridge, but then we had a motorcycle reportedly someone standing on the shoulder of mechanical issues, just a

'cause we are.
5:14 am
implgts right now at 5:13, oakland chilly start to the day and probably light jacket weather throughout much of the morning into early in the afternoon. we're going to have a warmup going into the weekend. we'll talk about that and where we could see some rain, coming up in a few minutes. looking at the bay bridge, where i still have that report of a disabled motorcycle with the rider standing over on the shoulder there, as you pass through the treasure island tunnel, what it looks like from the latest report. slowing getting into san francisco and may be able to get over there now. we'll get the update from chp.
5:15 am
i'll get that over to you. good morning, very happy friday to you as well. as you plan your weekend or perhaps you're looking forward to your summer vacation, know that spring and summer of 2021 are going to be the season of shortages. restaurants are complaining they can't get their hands on enough meat and other menu items. the "wall street journal" says prices on pepperoni are up 60% over the past five weeks. you may see unusual things on your favorite restaurant's menu and that's because the restaurant owner answer chefs are running short of what they used to offer and are trying to think creatively about the things they can get their hands on and serve those, whatever their buyers can find. earlier this week talking about lumber and the shortage there, led to higher lumber prices. the high prices encourage saw mills to double their efforts in supply and that brings the price
5:16 am
down, the solution to high prices is high prices. one of the biggest shortages is car rentals not just in popular vacation spots but everywhere because car rental companies are moving their cars from less popular locations to more desirable areas to try to even up with demand. shortages of new cars as well as car manufacturers shut down production because there's a shortage of computer chips. the white house says it will not grant car makers requests to be put in the front of the line for new chips. now the one thing you can probably find lots of for super cheap is hand sanitizer, some stores offering a buy one get three deal. a lot of companies ramped up to meet demand. demand has fallen, they can barely give the stuff away and i think that's a good indication, laura and marcus, that all shortages turn into oversupply eventually, so eventually there
5:17 am
will be way too much pepperoni in the world. weekend plans. >> and you remember the toilet paper craze? >> oh yeah. now there's way too much. >> you still have stashes of it, scott? >> yep. >> thanks, scott. just in time for summer travel, southwest bringing back booze to its flight so the first flight to see that return of alcoholic beverages will be from hawaii and here on the mainland at the end of june and in july, southwest will start selling beer, red and white wine, vodka and whiskey on all of its flights except for the shortest ones, the ones under 250 miles, and if you're not a drinker, fr 24th. okay, so you've got to see this shot one pro golfer took.
5:18 am
watch sebastian munoz's tee shot on the 18th. badly off course, way left, heading for the spectator grand stands but a funny thing happened as the ball was headed to the grand stand, it landed in a mounted trash bag, a hole in one but certainly not the hole in one he was looking for there. i'd be happy if i had that. it's hard when it goes in the drink. >> here we go, friday morning. >> all right, good day to get out there maybe and golf a little bit? let's check in with kari, hitting the links today, huh? >> yes. absolutely. i mean, it's been perfect weather although the wind has been so gusty, it adds a little bit more of a curve to the we'll still have the same conditions today and as we take a look at what we're starting with, temperatures are very chilly in parts of the north bay. check out napa, we are 36
5:19 am
degrees right now. but then you compare that to oakland where it's 53 so we're already seeing a wide range in temperatures as you get ready to step out on this friday, and those winds have been the other story. this shows the wind speeds and the forecast in miles per hour. here we are taking the time line through 10:30 this morning and becoming gusty near the coast. a lot of us in the inland areas feeling a breeze at about 15 to 20 miles per hour. notice the afternoon how strong the winds will be in san mateo, half moon bay, san francisco, even in santa rosa, it's going to be gusty again today. so it's still going to be another one of those windy days, where at times the gusts really start to pick up as our temperatures reach into the upper 60s. so here's what's going on, we have a storm system just to the east of us, bringing some rain over to the sierra and we've seen the thunderstorms bubbling up there as well, some of the clouds moving into the bay area, and if you will be traveling to the sierra, heads up if there
5:20 am
will be some rain, even some thunderstorm chances and some snow in the upper elevations, but we've also seen a little bit of activity into the north bay. into this afternoon and evening watching out for a stray shower or thunderstorm possible in parts of the north bay later on today. heads up about that. most of the day will be dry and most of us won't see any of that rain but a lot of changes here in the forecast. we'll be warming up as we go into next week. mike, you've been watching the roads. how is it looking right now? >> kari, one roadway, i-80 across the bay is the concern right now. we had the earlier crash that cleared and there's still a report of a motorcycle rider standing on the right shoulder with his or her motorcycle there, and there was quite a bit of distraction as you'd imagine coming out of the treasure there, cause me to hit the brakes. the rest of the bay diablo fire

people feel lik him everywhere. what are the not understanding about what's going on? >> you know, i asked for privacy and i'm talking all the time. so i think being able to have a life that you are not intruded upon by photographers or people flying overhead or invading your life. >> you can watch the entire interview coming up on the "today" show. also coming up next on "today in the bay," we're going to cover some top stories including covid restrictions that are easing across the board as a lot of people in california are getting vaccinated now. why some bay area businesses say they're not ready to play ball just yet with some of the loosening rules.

5:46 am
on a bipartisan independent panel would be introduced in the senate despite it looks look it would nots. schumer said he wants people on historical record as to how they're going ovote. the independent commission would be modeled on the 9/11 commission and not made up of lawmakers but independent experts and things like law enforcement and terrorism appointed by both parties. how contentious is capitol security? a house bill to give more money to capitol police barely passed. it would also harden doors and windows and create a quick reaction force. republicans who voted no said it was too much money. left wing democrats put themselves in the defund the police camp also voted no, said the exact same thing. it was too much money for police. we're learning more about the president's test drive the other day, the ceo of ford says his team had no idea the president would drive the truck. they thought he was kidding when he asked. everyone laughed politely, he
5:47 am
said, then realized he was serious. one of the stranger fact checks we've ever had to do, the head of ford also had to react to right-wing media which claims the president didn't really drive the truck claiming there were two steering wheels. a secret service agent had his hand on the dash, not the other steering wheel which there wasn't one. the ford f-150 has a big battery but one steering wheel. the president's dad was a ford dealer and owned a '67 corvette for years. >> i didn't get a chance to flash it into second. i was afraid i'd go through those guys.
