7:04 am
cease fire has not stopped protesters from getting violent. this was the scene in times square last night. what happens now? we've got two reports this morning. let's get it started with nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel. >> reporter: good morning, we just arrived at the gaza strip. we're at the border crossing between israel and gaza. this part of the crossing is controlled by hamas as is gaza. for now the cease fire as fragile as it is, as incomplete as it is, appears to be holding under growing u.s. pressure, israel overnight agreed to a simultaneous cease fire with hamas brokered by egypt. president biden praising the deal. >> i believe the palestinians and israelis equally deserve to live safely and securely and to enjoy equal measures of freedom, prosperity and democracy. >> reporter: israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu said israel had achieved its military objectives and set back hamas by years. but many israelis are skeptical of the cease fire saying israel
7:05 am
was just defending itself after hamas fired first. >> i think the cease fire won't last eight hours. >> i'm skeptical that it will really be kept for a while. >> reporter: 11 days, hamas launched more than 4,000 rockets indiscriminately at israeli cities. israel says its iron dome defense system destroyed 90% of the rockets, but some got through killing at least 13 israelis. israel pounded gaza into submission, destroying what it described as hamas's tunnel network and killing more than 230 palestinians including 65 children. palestinians argue israel provoked this round with a raid on muslims praying in jerusalem, and many palestinians say the rockets and clashes are their only tools to resist what they describe as israeli apartheid that limits how and where they live.
7:06 am
what's not in dispute is that the people of gaza paid heavily for this. more than 100,000 gazans fled their housing during the fighting, many sheltering in u.n. schools. today they started heading back home. >> we feel very tired. we were so scared. >> reporter: in gaza, they're celebrating but in rubble. both sides say they are committed to keeping this cease fire, cease fires in the past have broken down, but what's different this time is egypt, which helps moderate the deal, says it is sending monitors to both the gaza strip and to israel to watch both sides. >> all right, richard engel in gaza for us this morning. we want to turn now to nbc news analyst jeremy bash. good morning to you. >> hey, savannah. >> obviously a cease fire is good news. the question is now what? and what have we learned from this 11 days of conflict between these two long-time enemies?
7:07 am
>> the region remains on a hair trigger because what hamas showed during this 11-day conflict is they've got the volume of rockets, they fired more than 4,000. in 2014 they only fired 3,000 over seven weeks. so firing 4,000 over a week and a half shows they've got the volume. they've got the range. their able to hit tel aviv and jerusalem. they've got the precision. so israel was in a precarious situation. it had to fire back hard. i think this was a diplomatic win for the biden administration because not only did they win this cease fire, but they actually gave israel somewhat of a green light in early days. i think the biden team knew that israel was going to have to retaliate and retaliate hard. >> it did expose rifts within the democratic party and the biden administration having to deal with progressives in its ranks who wanted biden to come down hard er on netanyahu and the israelis. >> they resisted. i would say at the end of the day, they gave israel some leash here, but this is a brewing issue within the democratic party.
7:08 am
you do have progressives like bernie sanders who are calling to stop arm sales to israel, america's traditional ally. i think this is going to play out. if israel has to go back into gaza through air strikes or later during a ground invasion, this is going to come to the fore again. >> another really disturbing aspect of this particular 11-day conflict is that we saw it spill into the israeli streets and tensions between israeli arabs and israeli jews. what is the significance of that in your mind? >> yeah, and i've talked to people in israel this week, savannah, and they said that's the most disturbing aspect. for the most part people live peacefully. they work together. they shop together. they mix and mingle, and this street violence, the lynchings, the demonstrations, the molotov cocktails, this has really shaken israeli society, and fundamentally that's the larger issue. israel and hamas are going to remain at war. hamas is a terrorist organization. jews and arabs have to live
7:09 am
together in a very small plot of land. this is an enduring challenge for them and the world. >> thank you as always, we appreciate it. also this morning, there are positive new signs when it comes to the pandemic. the nation is inching closer to president biden's goal to vaccinate 70% of u.s. adults with at least one shot by the 4th of july. this as the likelihood of a booster shot starts to come into focus. nbc's sam brock is in florida with the latest there. hey, sam, good morning. >> hoda, good morning. both pfizer's ceo and dr. anthony fauci are preparing for the possibility of another booster shot needed within a yea. here in coral gables so many of these tables over my shoulder are full in the middle of the week. the sight of friends and families breaking bread and bars bustling, part of a glass half full picture for a country that's now seen more than six in ten adults receive at least one shot of the covid vaccine. the nation closing in on the 70%
7:10 am
goal set by the commander in chief, who stood by vice president kamala harris for a bill signing thursday with no masks on. at the same time, pfizer's ceo says the prospects of a booster shot remain strong. >> likely there will be a need for a booster somewhere between 8 and 12 months, but that remains to be seen. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci also questioned about the need for a booster by "axios." >> we know that the vaccine durability of the efficacy lasts at least six months and likely considerably more, but i think we will almost certainly require a booster sometime within a year or so. >> reporter: still, the likelihood not raising many eyebrows. >> those who have gotten the vaccine i'm sure they're going to be fine. >> sheila isn't vaccinated yet, but says a booster won't make or break her decision. >> i'm on the fence, but i think
7:11 am
i might go ahead and get the vaccine. >> reporter: many already seeing a spike. >> as we look at all these people, is this typical in the middle of the week? >> this is very typical. >> reporter: in the miami area, a food and wine festival expected to draw hundreds as data from open tables shows the city's experience a more than 50% jump in seated diners compared to 2019 pre-pandemic. >> do you see this renaissance, a restaurant renaissance, a sign that things are getting back to where they were? >> absolutely. people are feeling good. we're talking about vaccines, people are feeling confident. >> reporter: large metros like new york and seattle under stricter rules for longer are down more than 60% in that span, but nationally, restaurants appear to be dancing their way to a recovery. >> and sam, there are a growing number of colleges are starting to say you must have a vaccine before you can come back to school. so give us the latest. >> reporter: hoda, that's right. the university of virginia just
7:12 am
became one of the highest profile schools in the country to require all of its students getting vaccinated that are living and taking classes on campus. that's about 25,000 people. it's also worth noting that the chronicle of higher education identified about 380 schools that required at least some of the employees or staff members to get the vaccine. in the state of florida, that's prohibited. hoda. >> okay. all right, sam brock, thank you so much. craig is off this morning, and we are delighted to welcome nbc's new senior national correspondent tom llamas. somebody we actually know well. >> you used to work across the street. >> i did, yeah. now i'm back here. this is great, it feels amazing to be here today. we want to turn to a new controversy surrounding new york governor andrew cuomo. his governor chris, a cnn anchor apologizing on his show last night after it was revealed he's been advising his governor on how to deal with ongoing sexual >> reporter: good morning, tom, usually we bring you the latest in the slew of scandals su
