what a safeway executive told the crowd. s harvey milk day. we'll show you the celebrations in the city. >> first, a huge re-opening in the south bay. great america back open for families for the first time in more than a year. we begin with breaking news tonight. this video just into the newsroom showing the aftermath of a fire in windsor. this is when it was going full tilt. one home, several cars caught fire earlier today. the fire started about 1:00 this afternoon, the west side of highway 101 and it certainly impacted traffic. chp had to shut the southbound lanes for a little more than an hour. the fire burned about five acres and the crews said they have a handle on it now. here's a look at san rafael, and you can see the trees in the distance swaying in the wind. you can also see a lot of the dry, brown hills behind them. for more on the conditions, let's bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. >> it's the wind and the

humidity and you saw the fire, and the milk fire in windsor. we had winds about 10 to 20 miles per hour and the fuel moisture content and how dry the grasses and the hillsides are in the north bay and midsummer-like conditions and it's right near the red line and you might have noticed the droughtf the north the highest level exceptional drought. v4, the scale doesn't get higher than that, into contra costa and alameda county. even if the sea breeze and the mild temperatures, any wind over the parched sides, that will lead to problems and the winds can pick up the strong sea breeze and that will bring our temperatures down around the bay and those gusty winds around the dry hills and as long as the winds stay up and the drought conditions continue to persist around the bay area. back to you. >> thanks a lot. another top story, a major re-opening in the south bay. >> great america welcomed guests

back into the theme park in more than a year. >> kristi smith is scomplooif you've been talking with visitors today. >> reporter: that's right, and there are plenty of families that were ready to be the first ones back and boy, are they excited to be here. you hear the rollercoasters again. you can hear the music as they step through. it's been a while and there are some changes. >> at california's great america, visitors are back. >> feels like 2019 with a face mask. yeah. it's good. >> this family came in from oakley. >> it's good. we got, like i said, limited people. we all have our masks on and yeah, we're good. >> we're vaccinated. >> they want to do some rollercoasters. >> i just want to walk around and let the baby grandson have his first theme park experience.

>> the park also a huge draw in the south bay has been closed since march of last year. >> we are so excited. this is our official opening day. >> granter is vice president and general manager. the park is open at 35% capacity and there are covid protocols in place. >> at the moment, you need a reservation and that's so we can spread people out a little bit and make sure that we're social distanced and currently, we're still wearing masks and there are sanitation stations all over the park. >> it is key to check for changes and some seats are left empty for covid safety. there are food options and something to look forward to. >> a brand new water park called south bay shores and double the size of the original water park. >> mike is ready to hit it with his family. >> last year it was closed so we can't go, but this year my son has to go and he's tall enough to get to the ride, so we're

people ages 12 and up having received one shot and this comes with cases of 19 and santa clara county have reached an all-time low and here's how the bay area compares for the rest of the country and it shows the counties which have the most fully vaccinated people across the united states and this is for counties $25,000 and more. number one, folks, marin was more than 60% fully vaccinated ask i'm talking about contra costa. it looks like you'll see probably -- san mateo, and i was look looking at sonoma county and 21st in the country with 48% of the people vaccinetted. seven of the 11 bay areas rank across the top ten in the entire

have the local state and local capital, and about 300 people are there gathering for a prayer vigil in memory of george floyd. you remember george floyd, and the organizers say the prayer disparity and recent attacks in the aapi community, as well. this event is set to last until 5:30, so about another hour. >> several church groups and may 25th marks one year since george floyd's killing. >> after weeks of demanning a formal apology from safeway they gathered outside this been for another -- last month he bought a sandwich at the deli here, but security guards accused him of stealing even after he showed them his receipt.

nbc bay area's investigative unit has been tracking the whales turning up in the san francisco bay. >> you can watch his investigation by visiting nbc by area.com and clicking on investigations. >> the tragic accident in san pablo overnight after a driver swerved to avoid an animal in the road. the chp happened around 12:30 a.m. on i-80. the driver told officers he saw a raccoon on the highway and swerved crashing into a wall and the car caught on fire. the driver was able to get out, but his passenger was not. when a small animal croeses your path, you should -- if something small of that nature leak a raccoon or some staller avenue, and due to the fact that yoi won't won't have limited time, and been hit into a concrete

family. i was going to say raccoon. back in march the rangers spotted the elusive animal for the first time and only had a grainy photo and they captured video of a second one. they are nocturnal and rarely seen in california. people trap them for their fur and they are one of the nine mammals as fully protected species by the state department fish and wildlife. >> this is very educational. >> you're welcome for educating you on the ring tail. >> i appreciate the ring tail education. let's check in with rob mayeda to get an education on the forecast for the rest of the weekend. >> we are enjoying a sea breeze and foggy conditions moving back into san francisco. you have 60s and 70s across most of the bay area right now and drizzle on the way as we head toward tomorrow morning and the golden gate bridge, currently 60 degrees west-northwest at 11 miles per hour. we are also seeing the southwest

wind at 17 miles per hour, and temperatures comfortably in the mid-70s and the numbers in the north 70s and the northwest wind at 18, and even though you see the sun shine outside you'll want a jacket as temperatures approach sunset, dropping into the low 60s by 7:00 tonight. so we begin tomorrow morning with previews of what's happening around right now as the low clouds, 40s to low 50s for the morning and our highs today into the low 70s near san jose and cooler 60s near san francisco to oakland and inland tomorrow and the warmest places making a run at the mid-70s, concord and livermore seeing the weekend finish into the mid-70s. you can see the wind and the fog is keeping the ocean tomorrow, and the wind off the ocean at 15 to 25 miles per hour and notice the showers we've had over the last few days over the north bay hill. that's likely to push farther to the east, but you've still got a

lot of low clouds on the coast and the drizzle at times across the bay and the area of low pressure that did, and the scattered showers starts to move away from the bay area and just the sierra seeing lingering showers during the day tomorrow, but behind it, high pressure will not have much time to build in as the pattern resets itself and notice another system bringing rain to our north and we'll keep the's breeze going and keeping our temperatures staying comfortably mild and the onshore wind at times and san francisco to finish the weekend and valley temperatures, no real sign of any upper 80s or 90s. so the temperatures will be staying cool and slightly warmer on monday and wednesday, and the sea breeze winning the battle as the shower stayed just to the north and as we approach memorial day weekend, we'll see the temperatures climbing just a little bit, but still pretty comfortable and that's good news and the higher humidity in the

after scattered clashes in jerusalem it was a night of relative calm with the cease-fire between israel and hamas still holding. >> nbc's richard engel reports from gaza. >> gas anns this morning are still picking up the pieces. aid is finally arriving. thousands of families are returning to their homes. they've been living in schools to hide from israeli air strikes. from above, the scale of what happened here is clear. 8,000 homes damaged or destroyed. 156 holes where stood. hamas didn't win this war militarily, but the group is more popular than ever. >> because hamas kept firing rockets until the end.

>> more than 4,000 rockets launched into israelis cities fired indiscriminately into populated areas. most were shot down, and some got through killing more than 13 israelis and more than 240 died in gaza. mohammed alhadidi is greeting mourners. he lost members of his family in an israeli air strike, including his wife and all, but one of his five children. i ask him if he thinks the cease-fire will end. >> this is an enemy that can't be trusted. maybe in one hour they will resume the bombardment of children sleeping in their homes and the kids, what have they done, he asks? >> this is sealed off like a prison that makeses another round of fighting all, but inevitable. in israel they expect that and many wanted the air strikes to continue. >> i'm against the cease-fire with gaza. i think we should continue the fighting, continue the fighting

until hamas will collapse totally. >> but hamas is being disputed y of jerusalem. there were more clashes yesterday at the al aqsa mosque. it was battles just like these that started this latest round two weeks ago. >> here in gaza, we are seeing no indication that hamas is preparing to launch more rockets. it seems that israel and hamas is taking a pause, seeing what, if anything, was accomplished in this latest round. richard engel, nbc, gaza. a new ship ready to set stale. we will show you a boat that will be stationed in san diego and tell you the unique story behind the ship's name. let's step outside and take a look at part of the golden gate bridge. the other half covered in fog. we don't have much choice over the weather and rob is saying it will not be next several days.

a video of the president boarding marine one this morning before leaving the white house, the biden administration put out a memo about the state of the economy. the nation continues to recover from the pandemic, a lot of businesses are struggling to find workers offering more money and more money. you saw an article from scott budman this week talking about how much people are putting out to get -- there we go, get people to come in and work. many people are not willing to work for low wages anymore. the republicans say the problem will lead to inflation. >> today marks the commissioning of the new "uss mobile" combat ship in alabama. there it is, it is the fifth in history to carry mobile's name

and the second naval ship commi city that it was built in and named after. mobile will be used for defense warfare missions and security operations. the ship's home port will be at naval base death. there is a new normal for hurricane season. a named storm in the atlantic brewing again even before the official start of the hurricane season. that's really redefining the whole thing. the hurricane named ana made landfall earlier today. this is the seventh straight year there's been a named storm before june 1st. it is considered the season's official start. things are changing. this follows a week of wild weather along the gulf coast and leaves at least five people dead. heavy storms have dumped up to 15 inches of rain in parts of louisiana, southeast texas continues to get hit by high

just more than two month away until the start of the summer olympics in tokyo and with each passing day the olympic torch relay continues to make its way through japan. we have been following it today, and it went through a city totori. some parts of the relay have been held without people. in parks due to the covid restriction and that looks different. this looks like a torch relay is supposed to look. it remains under a state of emergency because of an increase
