carotid holds and no knock warrants. it's unclear if it will have support in the senate. on tuesday join marcus washington and jessica aguirre for "race in america" as we reflect on the racial reckoning george floyd's death sparked and the important conversations we continue to have. join us tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. shifting gears now, half of all californians have now been fully vaccinated against covid-19 and nbc bay area political analyst larry gerston says that is great news for governor gavin newsom's effort to defeat his looming recall. let's bring in larry now. hi, larry, good morning to you. californians beating covid and newsom beating his recall? >> it seems to be, kira. i'll give two sets of numbers to you and it may explain that. first of all look at the general support for newsom with respect
7:49 am
to how people feel he's doing. people are reluctant to support recall of newsom than before. it's topped out. 36% now, 36% in january but the no means we want to keep the governor. it's inched up from 45% in january to 49% now, and how so, well you see the don't knows going down. all the don't knows are going toward keeping the governor. when you vote no, you vote to keep the governor nap seems to be an indicator they topped out at 36%. one other set of numbers i'll tell you briefly, how people feel he's doing with respect to covid, managing the vaccinations as they rolled out and we find that today a h governor is doin managing covid, compared with 22% last january. you put those two sets of
7:50 am
numbers together and it looks like the governor is managing his way back to the good graces of californians. >> so you just said 54% sounds like approve of his handling of covid. so why is there more support for his management of covid compared to people who want him to still be governor? >> it's pretty clear. people believe that's doing well with covid, but as far as his role as governor, there are concerns, the same concerns that began this recall from the very beginning. concerns about the governor's role with respect to sanctuary state, governor's rhe reasons that originally brought this march toward recalling the governor. those are still there as far as his enemies go, but really when it comes to the vaccination, people feel pretty good about
7:51 am
what he's doing. so in that respect, looks like they just haven't, the anti newsom folks haven't broken through probably because the governor is managing covid much better than he had been a few months ago. >> so before i let you go, given that new recall data, and voter approval of his covid management, so to speak, do you think the governor is in the clear or is he still running the risk of being recalled? >> oh, if we only knew. several months now between where we are and the election itself. i think there are three things we want to watch for as far as the governor's fortunes go. number one, will there be some unexpected disaster, fires, for a good example, okay. the drought we talked about, to the extent those occur and the governor doesn't manage it well, that could hurt him. number two, will the governor commit another gaffe, think
7:52 am
french laundry what that meant and cost him dearly and number three, watch the way the voters come out. the polls show right now that democrats and independents are not that interested in the recall issue. republicans are. one-third of republicans -- one-third of democrats and independents are interested. 75% of republicans. if the republicans come out greater than that, watch out. the turnout could be skewed and low turnout election, anything can happen's special will i in a state like california. the governor is not out of the woods but looking pretty good right now. >> all right, we know you'll keep on top of it, larry, we'll check back in with you in a week from now. thanks so much. at 7:52, next a quick look at top stories we're following including some young adults and teens experiencing an unusual condition after getting their second covid shot, a new investigation from the cdc and what you and your teen need to know.
