i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. mike keeping an eye on the roads but first let's talk about the forecast. meteorologist kari hall, how is it looking? >> it looks pretty good to start out for a monday morning. we're going to have cool temperatures and a clear sky for most of us, heading through the tri-valley. a few clouds this morning but our temperatures go from the upper 40s to the upper 60s heading into late morning. we are going to have a little bit more of a warmup today compared to yesterday, but some of us hitting the mid 80s in the inland east bay and north bay. we're going to talk more about that also what's ahead for the rest of the week in the forecast coming up. mike, any problems now for the commute? >> we have one kari, sticking around for contra costa county. let's get you out to the maps and show most folks exactly what they want to see, green sensors. you see the green sensors through concord. northbound 242 counter to what will eventually be your morning commute at grant street the

off-ramp there, may be blocked when you get there in the next few minutes. there is a crash that happened overnight. pass by and use oliviera and the commute out of antioch is fine. the altamont pass into the tracy area on 205. back to you. we begin with a study on the minds of many parents this morning, bay area pediatrician addressing a new concern, the cdc investigation involving teens and heart problems surrounding the vaccines. they small number experience myocarditis, a condition that is inflammation of the heart muscle and it can lead to fatigue, chest pain and abnormal heart rhythms. dr. yvonne maldonado withstand ford recommends teens get vaccinated. >> these vaccines in my view are still extremely safe and effective. as i mentioned, these cases of myocarditis have been showing up

in reports but in many cases, these reports have been in older individuals and it's still not clear even in the older individuals that they're related to the vaccine. >> she also recommends that parents speak to the health care providers if they have any questions. dr. maldonado is also involved in vaccine trials for kids undered age of 12. she's optimistic the younger children will be able to get the vaccine in the fall. >> it's possible that the 5 to 12-year-old vaccine trials may be done by early fall, but the trials for children under 5 may not be done until the end of the year or the beginning of 2022. >> so moderna, pfizer and johnson & johnson are all working on vaccine trials for children. covid cases across the u.s. are at the lows, we're talking about lows we haven't seen in just about a year. counties the tracking some of lowest case rates anywhere. a group called covid act now tracks the case rates for 400

metro areas across the u.s. and its tracker lists san jose with the eighth lowest at 1.8 per 100,000. four other nearby are in the top 25, salinas, santa cruz, santa rosa and san francisco. l.a. county is number ten on the list. taking a live look at fremont the normally quiet city is on edge after three sexual assaults this month. police arrested the alleged attacker but neighbors still shaken. they gathered yesterday to learn what they can do to better protect themselves. "today in the bay's" marianne favro is in fremont where the community is banding together. >> reporter: the first sexual assault happened here at the fremont hub on may 5th. then eight days later, two women were brutally attacked on the same day. >> a sexual assault and intention to rape is something that is unthinkable for any of us living here and it showed us

that how vulnerable we are. >> sheila mani organized this event after learning two women were sexually assaulted in the middle of the day earlier this month in a 57-year-old woman near auto mall parkway and fremont boulevard. hours later, a 67-year-old woman attacked in the front yard of a home near grimmer boulevard, beaten so badly she was hospitalized with broken bones and major injuries. after a witness called 911, police interrupted the sexual assault in progress and arrested 28-year-old alexander lomax, now accused of three sexual assaults. >> it is awful. it is terrible, but it is incredibly unusual. >> reporter: police chief kimberly peterson met with the community which is rattled by the crimes. she says police increased patrols where the assaults happened but admits it's not

enough. >> we can't be everywhere at once especially in a city of size of fremont. we encourage neighbors to get to know one another, to organize. we have a neighborhood crime watch program, it's about 150 areas strong and we need more. >> reporter: fremont city councilmember teresa cox agrees, neighbors need to have each other's backs. >> it happens combat crime. we watch wha who comes and leaves in the area. >> two are asian, police say it does not appear race was a motivating factor but it appears the suspect targeted women in their late 50s and older. as a mom, sheila mani hopes by joining forces to ask tough questions and address fears, neighbors will feel empowered to make their community safer. in fremont, marianne favro, "nbc bay area news." happening today, governor gavin newsom will highlight a new plan to protect the state

from wildfires. the governor is investing $2 billion in emergency preparedness, the most pledged in wildfire safety in california history. the governor is expected to show off new fire fighting equipment. we'll have coverage on our air and digital platforms as we continue to cover the story. sonoma county releasing evacuation zone maps to help you be prepared in case of emergency. to look at each of the maps, plan your own evacuation route, head to nbcbayarea.com. as we keep thinking about the risk we can't help think about what the weather is doing with that. kari, how are things looking? we don't have a lot, no rain in sight but what about the wind conditions and temperatures for us? >> temperatures have been much cooler, we've also had some higher humidity. today even though the vegetation is dry we're watching out for a fairly low fire threat for today.

as we start out in san jose, our humidity at 83% and temperature at 53 degrees. we'll see temperatures with a cool start this morning in the low 50s start to warm up by late morning and a nice warming trend for today. if you plan heading out for hiking trails, be careful. we'll see temperatures a such warmer today compared to the past few days. we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> kari, just checking on the latest. we have a second crash, let me show you the map first of all, mostly green closer to the water, what most of our viewers want to see but over on the right side, we have two icons. they're on 205, for the folks in tracy. by the time you join 205 and 580 and the altamont pass you're back at the normal flow of traffic, slowing around grant line road, there may be another

good monday morning. right now at 4:41 as you get ready to head out the too in oakland, it's going to be another cool start to the day, a few clouds as well. temperatures at about 50 degrees and then a lot of sunshine, another really nice day for us ahead. we will talk about all of the changes in our forecast that we'll see as we head into memorial day, that's coming up in a few minutes. and chp said got a little gusty for a couple of cruisers across the bay bridge and benicia bridge but not the san mateo bridge, not what they reported. we look at a smooth drive, i don't see a problem with the camera or the drivers. two folks are changing lies.

we'll check in with kristina. >> i'm kristina partsinevelos from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher. the dow posting its fourth negative week in the past five. the s&p 500 suffering its first back-to-back losses since february but the nasdaq did manage to snap a four-week losing streak. bitcoin dropping more than 15% yesterday, but it's up billion above 4% today and this comes as china calls for stricter laws around mining cryptos. the majority of the world's bitcoin mining is done in china. in focus for investors this week reports on housing, consumer confidence, income and spending and first quarter gdp. prices at the pump keep rising. the average price of gas jumping eight cents to $3.10 a gallon, more than $1 higher than it was a year ago.

analysts say mostly due to the ten-day shut down of the colonial pipeline and higher corn prices. in the bay area, gas is averaging just about $4.30 a gallon and last but not least, twitter is previewing its ticketed spaces feature in the coming weeks. you could apply to host paid live audio rooms but you got to be 18 years old, you have to have at least 1,000 followers and you have to have hosted three spaces in the past month. twitter is teaming one striped to handle payments and says users will get 80% of the revenue after apple and google take their cut from in-app purchases fees and spaces is twitter's answer to clubhouse, the popular social audio app that is invite only, so i guess imitation is the greatest form of flattery? who knows. back to you guys. >> it is. maybe we should go live right now, i don't know. we're member.

a very good monday morning to you, waiting for the sun's arrival on this monday morning, but taking a live look outside, the east bay in walnut creek this morning. hope everybody had a really nice weekend. got a little rest and relaxation, because you got to get back at it today. what are we going to be a littlt warmer today but still pretty nice for the bay we really can't explain about this, as we start out this morning with temperatures

anywhere from the mid-40s in the south county to the upper 50s, what we're seeing right now in clearlake. most of us in the low 50s and it's going to be a cool start with a lot of sunshine again today. let's head to antioch, head out to the park today, by 7:00, heading out for a walk, it would be 57 degrees, at 9:00, you can see that warmup, it will be at 64 and 72 at 11:00, eventually we'll reach into the mid 80s here, so there will be some warmer spots where you may think should i turn on the air conditioning for a little bit? you will not need that for oakland, reaching 72 and we'll see some mid-60s in san francisco. napa today reaching 81 degrees. so here is what's in store for the week. all of the rain staying to the north of us, but we will have some cooler air at times, kind of moving down into the bay area, as we go into memorial day weekend, we are going to have a warmup as some high pressure builds but before then, we are going to have an exciting event on wednesday morning.

the lunar eclipse happening before sunrise, and it's going to appear orange at a few hours, but it's anywhere from 1:47 in the morning to 6:01, but the peak will be at 4:18, so be sure to check that out. that's before "today in the bay" starts on wednesday morning. here's a look at our temperatures throughout the week. we have some 70s, and 80s, but overall our inland areas will stay fairly mild throughout the week. san francisco seeing the fog each and every morning and highs reaching into the low to mid-60s. mike, what's happening out there now for the commute? >> i'm just happy there's a reason to get up early on wednesday, besides "today in the bay." let's go out to the roadways, the issue out of, actually into the altamont pass. mostly green sensors all around the bay, close to the bay, and getting in through livermore a little slow through the altamont pass so the crash back at 205 westbound is at the on-ramp for mountain house and not a problem

as far as the flow. you see the traffic building right on schedule, typical build there, none out of brentwood, discovery bay, antioch, pittsburg, bay point, fine into concord. crash 242 cleared. bay bridge toll plaza in backup, no problem. back to you. a viral video led to a party that got wildly out of hand in huntington beach over the weekend. police say they were forcd to fire nonlethal rounds into the crowd. 2,500 people showed up to this birthday party dubbed adrian's kick back on the beach. some set off fireworks even, around 150 people were arrested. hundreds gathered on the beach last night continuing the party, causing police to issue an overnight curfew. another whale washing ashore in the bay area in pacifica on lindamar beach. since february 11 other whales are found dead or near the bay.

malnutrition, entanglement and trauma from ship strikes are the most common causes of the deaths. the investigative unit has been tracking this and find out ba bigad shaban found, watch the piece visiting nbcbayarea.com and clicking on our investigations. turning to a live look at capitol hill where national guard troops are set to start heading home. more than 2,000 in the guard soldiers have been providing security since shortly after the january 6 insurrection. after nearly five months the national guard is turning over full security of the area to capitol police, it comes as democrats and republicans have yet to agree on how to fund fortifications of the capitol. democrats want to form a bipartisan commission to investigate the attack. many republican lawmakers have been downplaying the violence and say a commission won't find anything new. new this morning, most sonoma county businesses are reportedly choosing privacy over
