news of the day. it highlights contrast, doesn't it >> sure does the middle east cease-fire is still holding as the world watches and both sides begin to rebuild. here in the u.s., new flashes of violence amid a rise in anti-semitic incidents we have two reports including n nbc's richard engel who's live in gaza. on the covid front, cases and deaths continuing to fall across the country there are some new questions this morning over teenagers and the vaccine. the cdc examining rare incidents of heart inflammation in teens we have it all covered and start with nbc's tom costello. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the good news is this is now really starting to feel like the pre-pandemic days. we have, as you mentioned, cases down dramatically, hospitalizations are down, deaths are down. more than half of americans have had at least one vaccination shot already so as we watch all of this unfold, america is opening its

doors again. from parades and packed sporting events to concerts and graduations, to the streets of south beach packed for the food and wine festival, the nation is turning the corner on covid, and there is plenty of reason to celebrate. covid cases at their lowest point in almost a year the average number of daily new cases is down 20% last week compared to the week before. hospitalizations down 15%. >> that's driven in large part by vaccines, as well as the fact that the majority of people over the age of 65 have been fully immunized. they were driving the surges of hospitalizations and deaths earlier this year. >> reporter: and while the daily pace of americans getting vaccinated has slowed, more than 60% of adults have received at least one dose so far, inching closer to the president's goal of 70% by july 4th a milestone nine states have already achieved the latest, new mexico and rhode

saturday >> it's definitely concerning, but i feel a little safer knowing that it is a very small chance it hasn't happened to a lot of people. >> reporter: yeah, the cdc is emphasizing that at the moment, there are not that many reports of this myocarditis report the bottom line is that it is an inflammation of the heart muscle so far, the symptoms in these adolescents appear to be minor savannah, back to you. >> thank you very much joining us now is dr. richard besser, the former acting director of the cdc, now president and ceo of the robert wood johnson foundation. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. >> what do you make of the action by the cdc? there is a small number of myocarditis reported in adolescents and young adults what red flags does that raise for you? >> first, it tells me the system is working there is an independent advisory committee that is monitoring safety data every week, looking for any potential signal that there could be a safety issue
7:07 am
from the vaccines. in seeing these cases of myocarditis, which is an unusual, rare inflammation of the heart muscle, what they're saying is, well, is this more than we would normally expect to see? because this is, unfortunately, a condition that you can see in children and in adults so far, they're saying no, there aren't more cases than we would expect, but we want to make sure there aren't some out there we've missed we want to make sure there is no connection they're gathering information. they're gathering data to make sure there is no situation that they need to be worried about in terms of vaccines and myocarditis. >> i just want to underscore that because we don't know if there are any more cases of myocarditis than there would have been whether you had a vaccine or not, and we don't know if there is a cause and effect yet we don't know if it is just a correlation or if it is really causation. >> yeah. i mean, this is one of the most challenging things whenever there is a new medication or a

new vaccine, to tell if it is something caused by it or is it something you'd normally expect to see there are a lot of viruses that can cause myocarditis. as the warm weather comes, that's when we tend to see the viruses. there's also drugs and other inflammatory conditions that can do this. so you'd expect to see a certain number, and they're seeing that number but some of these cases are in that timeframe after someone has received a vaccine, and they want to make sure that isn't just coincidence, and that none of these were caused by the vaccine itself. >> doc, you're a pediatrician. you know there are parents who are watching that are going, wait a minute. i'll hang out and wait who knows? this causes me concern maybe i just won't have my adolescent get the vaccine what would your advice be? >> well, i mean, my advice would be, there is something we do know we know covid infection itself can be very serious and that we've lost hundreds of children
7:09 am
and thousands have been hospitalized so even if there is a connection with the vaccine -- and right now, we don't know that there is -- we do know covid infection itself is much more serious than that so i would recommend that parents go ahead and get their kids vaccinated. there were 600,000 children between the ages of 12 and 15 who got vaccinated last week, which is terrific. i think it is a sign that our children, at least our children older than 12, will soon have ed same protection that so many adults have. >> richard besser, appreciate it. >> thank you, savannah. over the weekend, israel and hamas continued to honor the cease-fire that brought an end to the most recent round of fighting, but the region is still very much on edge. this morning, the white house is announcing the secretary of state will travel there in the coming days. nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel is there for us in gaza richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning.
