>> and i'm laura garcia. we'll have more in a bit. good morning to you. first, let's check in with kari with a look at our forecast. how are we looking? >> it looks pretty good, laura. we're starting out with the coastal fog that we've been seeing for the past few days, getting this beautiful shot of the golden gate bridge and the fog just rolling by. as we go into today, we're going to see some of our temperatures in the inland areas still heating up and looking at some 60s near the coast, but some low 80s for the inland valleys. by the weekend, temperatures heading up while the sierra gets rain. high temperatures today reaching into the mid-70s for san jose and 80 today in livermore. mike, how is it looking for the early morning commuters? >> kari, overall looking great except on the peninsula, breaking news. we have a crash and an alert from chp as we look at your map, you can see the green and the

closure in alvarado niles which is overnights as well all week. the slowing northbound 101 north of the dumbarton bridge is because you're down to just one lane around woodside road into redwood city. it was a stall and turned into a crash when someone hit that stalled vehicle. so far no update from chp. 101 northbound the tail lights headed past willow they should start tapping the brakes outside of camera range. i'll bring you the latest from chp. back to you. >> sounds good. we'll check back with you. today marks one year since the death of george floyd in minneapolis. the killing touching off a firestorm of protests and change. >> president biden will meet with floyd's family at the white house today and really hoped to have a deal on police reform passed in congress by now but the two parties are still

negotiating. the white house says the president wants to form a more meaningful relationship with floyd's family and hear from them about their perspective on reform and rebuilding trust. in minneapolis a day of events planned to honor the life of george floyd including concerts, candlelight vigil. floyd's cousin says a year later, his death is still raw in his mind but he is happy to see some change. >> our hearts are still broken, because we'll never have him again to be able to hug user talk to us but we're optimistic that some things have changed as a result of his death. >> the naacp will hold a remembrance ceremony at 10:00 this morning and a march planned at los altos high school at 2:00 this afternoon. a vote that may forever change the face of downtown san jose. city councilmembers are voting on whether to approve the massive downtown west development in the area around diridon station. this is google's plan to expand

to san jose in an area covering 80 acres. going the hopes to break ground as soon as next year provided it gets that green light. oakland's bishop was robbed at gun point over the weekend. he says he's telling his story to bring awareness to an end to gun violence in the city, a problem that is actually he's been vocal about. "today in the bay's" cheryl hurd has more. >> i go out and walk in the afternoon and say the rosary, a man pulled a gun on me, pointed it at me and said "give me your wallet." >> reporter: shocking testimony from bishop michael barber at the cathedral of christ the light in oakland. >> i was terrified. i was afraid. i'm sorry for my sins, lord. >> reporter: the bishop was robbed at gunpoint of his wallet, filled with cash by a man on a bike near the stage

guns in the homes and on the streets. oakland police spokesperson johnna watson. >> we are looking at a 50% increase from last year, robberies different times throughout the day and evening, most of the robberies are armed. >> reporter: on sunday, the bishop tells his congregation to be careful. he is living proof gun violence is real. cheryl hurd, "today in the bay." the a's next stop on their relocation tour may be portland according to various reports indicating the team executives will be conducting a fact-finding visit there soon. this week the team is visiting las vegas. major league baseball has cleared the team to begin actively shopping due to the howard terminal stadium deal at a crawl. oakland leaders insist the howard terminal plan is still in play with the project review scheduled for july, today mayor

london breed is set to announce support for businesses still struggling amid the pandemic. she's holding a news conference at 1:00 this morning in union square. she will be joined by representatives from the art, hotel and restaurant industries. they announced a building back stronger program to help local businesses try to rehire workers to get everything up and running again as we all emerge from our little cocoons and come outside. we've been at least having some pretty glorious days, guys. how are we looking today, kari? >> it's going to be very much like yesterday, really nice, starting out cool, and with some clouds as well, but then we'll get some sunshine as we go into today, and let's check out san jose's forecast. 56 degrees right now. you can see the clouds that will be in the forecast throughout much of the morning, and then clear for the rest of the day as our temperatures will be a

degree or two cooler than yesterday so enjoy some time outside, maybe go for a hike in the east bay. temperatures at 10:00 at about 62 degrees, reaching into the upper 70s so it's going to be nice with all of that sunshine. we'll talk about a few changes in our forecast ahead. mike, what's going on now the morning commute? >> kari, we still have the breaking news on the peninsula for folks. the update is the chp definitely has one lane open but three are closed over there as you travel, i'd say four are closed including the on-ramp from 84 there, actually from willow or marsh and where you'll find the approaching the marsh on-ramp for north 101 up toward redwood city out of east palo alto, menlo park. 280 is clear. 84 overnight closure for niles canyon, keep that in mind 'til 5:00, no other problems except a crash in novato. highway 37. back to you. >> 4:38. coming up next on "today in

mike is keeping an eye on that this morning and want to look at the forecast for you today. i like to call it terrific tuesday and hopefully the forecast keeps up with my predictions. >> i think so. it's going to be another really nice one. we've had the coastal fog that helped to cool off all of the bay area. let me show you our live view in san francisco, taking a look at hayes valley and our temperatures here staying in the 60s, but then as you make your way inland, it's still going to be warm. so brentwood headed to 80 degrees and santa rosa will be in the upper 70s for a high as we start out with some clouds and then we get some afternoon sunshine. so let's talk about what's ahead. a lot of people are making holiday weekend plans and a lot of the rain will continue to be off and on for the pacific northwest, missing the bay area, and if you do plan to head to the sierra on sunday, there will be some showers moving through, possibly some thunderstorms and

for the bay area it's going to warm up even though we'll have the storm system very close by, so here we're looking at quite a few changes, but of course, the rain staying away from us as we'll see mostly clear conditions for the next couple of days. let's talk about this lunar eclipse that we have coming our way, so it's tomorrow morning, and it's before "today in the bay," so we want to make sure that you know when to look and also the reason why is called the super blood flower moon. well it's at its closest path to the earth and will be a supermoon, appear much brighter but the blood comes from how it gets its red color from the sun kind of shining through the earth's atmosphere and onto the moon and flower is happening in the spring when the flowers are blooming. you want to make sure you are taking a look out for that, early tomorrow morning at 2:45 when it starts but the peak will be at 4:19 so something to look

forward to and look up early in the morning. mike, how is it looking, you were tracking that breaking news on the peninsula. >> it's still there. no major injuries reported but i think three cars have to be addressed with an evidence tow, chp and police trying to get those cleared from the area but right now as we look at the live look from palo alto, we have some slowing. here is the camera, ben in the operations center moved the camera a bit north and you can see things are starting to slow a little bit toward the top of the screen. you'll bunch up just after the willow on-ramp there, traffic moves smoothly here, most of palo alto but the map shows you as you passly it university where our camera is located things start to slow down just before we lose sight of it around the bend in toward woodside road. that is the stretch for just one lane of northbound 101 opened, none of the lanes for 84 open through alvarado niles, cleared by 5:00 and the only other incident novato westbound 37 approaching 101.

a crash but traffic is getting through. back to you. >> thank you very much, mike. family members are marking 25 years since the disappearance of kristin smart, she was last seen at the school she attended cal polysan luis obispo. a long time person of interest was recently arrested and charged in her death. the body has still not been found but the family recently visited san luis obispo to meet with law enforcement officers and thank them for their efforts. new details, authorities in southern california have taken a former ucla gynecologist into custody on criminal sexual assault and conduct charges. it comes in the wake of a 21-count criminal indictment issued by grand jurors against james heaps. uc reached a $73 million deal civil settlement tied to nearly 7,000 cases involving heaps over three can he cades. he was arrested in 2019 and had been free on bond.

experts are optimistic about the worst of the pandemic being behind us, as covid cases trend down across the country. we haven't seen numbers this low in nearly a year. look at this graphic, you can see here. look at this, may 20th, 2020, look how many cases we had in one day, 25,146. those are new cases that day. and then may 20th, 2021, less than 28,000 cases. another big plus is that nearly half of the population here in the united states has received one dose of the vaccination as we head into what many say will be a normal summer. "today in the bay's" jean elle has more on what our future with covid will look like. >> normal life will really resume this summer for everywhere in the united states. >> reporter: ucsf disease dr. monica gandhi says because covid case numbers and hospitalizations are dropping across the country. >> cases have decreased in the last month by 56%. we're below 30,000 on average

"the chronicle" is reporting leading bay area democratic lawmakers have signed a letter calling this a poor attempt to get in under the deadline for that $12 million in state pandemic funding. assem lehman phil ting says the district cared more about money than getting children back in the classroom. the district said it was intentional to stagger returns and staffing levels. the final decision on the money is in the hands of state auditors. how much does it cost to
