"early today" starts right now. >> i'm frances rivera. >> i'm phillip mena. just moments ago we learned that a ninth victim has died in a workplace shooting in san jose, california the city is mourning the lives of those senselessly killed by this uniquely american epidemic of gun violence. police say a worker at the silicon valley transportation rail yard shot and murdered nine of his co-workers before killing himself. this morning we are learning the names of those victims they are there on your screen. they range in age from 29 to 53 years old. most if not all were vta employees. president biden be flown at half staff he's urging congress to pass gun control measures our dan sheneman has the latest.

>> reporter: investigators scouring the scene of a san jose, california, rail yard after a gun man opened fire. >> this is an active shooter. >> reporter: it was about 6:30 a.m. when the shooting started the sheriff's headquarters is nearby >> they did not wait they went to the scene and rendered first aid and rescued victims out of the building as fast as they can. >> reporter: in all eight victims shot and killed. the suspected victim found dead. >> deputies exchanged gunfire and we're going with the guess it was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. the home of the victim up in flames identified as 57-year-old samuel cassidy. a worker at the rail yard. the motive, unknown. his ex-wife told nbc station
