5:06 am
we'll take you there live. >> bob redell, you were one of the first reporters at his home yesterday. what do we know about the man behind all of this? >> reporter: marcus and laura, one neighbor we spoke with here in san jose didn't have very nice things to say about the suspect, samuel cassidy. he was 57 years old, worked for several years at the vta and he lived at a home on angmar court behind me here where you can see san jose police are out here guarding the scene. the home caught fire around the same time cassidy opened fire on his fellow co-workers. investigators are looking into whether cassidy used a timed device to start the fire so it would coincide with the shooting. a neighbor tells us cassidy lived by himself, wasn't friendly. cassidy's ex-wife tells the ap that about ten years ago cassidy had spoken about killing people at work. this morning on the "today" show sheriff laurie smith says law

enforcement is still trying to figure out the motive for yesterday's shooting. >> what in the world could prompt someone to take this kind of action? we don't know at this point. >> he scared me all the time. he never said hi. he didn't say anything. he looked like a scary person. >> reporter: that was cassidy's neighbor was mentioning. agencies like the fbi and atf spent much of the day out here collecting evidence from his home on angmar court. the bomb squad searched the home for explosive devices. none found, or at least they're not reporting they found any. neighbors were allowed to return to their homes last night. reporting live in south san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> you were out there yesterday, how much of that home actually burned?
5:08 am
the inside.: i did the police did find a gas can and smelled gasoline, so the belief is that was the accelerant used to start the fire. >> good thing that didn't spread to other neighbors homes as well. thanks so much, bob. as this investigation continues to unfold, loved ones are grieving enormous losses. participate of the main transit system is also at a standstill. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson with that angle to the story. this could affect a lot of people that are using vta services, cierra. >> reporter: that's right. good morning, laura. this investigation is ongoing all while a community and the greater bay area grieves for the lives lost in that tragedy. as vta works with those investigators, we're told services at those stations are
5:09 am
on pause. now right now the light rail service is canceled. vta tells us they are working to ensure the bus bridges are running along those light rail routes. now this morning commuters are being asked to plan their trips using regular buses. and with the disruption in service vta anticipating commuters and some travelers may have some transportation related questions. vta is sharing their customer line number. you can find that number on our screen right now or also continuously updating our website nbcbayarea.com with the up-to-date information. and, mike, i know you've been following this situation closely. any advice for those commuters heading out this morning as they navigate the city? >> cierra, you said it best and that's all i can add is you add time, you allow for delays and also that number. let's take the graphics on screen.

5:11 am

5:14 am
good thursday morning. right now at 5:13 as we take a live look outside in walnut creek, a cool start to the day and it will be a cooler afternoon ahead of a weekend warm-up. we'll have more on that in the forecast coming up in a few minutes. and a crash off the castro valley y on the shoulder for north 238. we'll track that. meanwhile, a live look outside. we had some debris reported on the san mateo bridge. it hasn't presented any additional problems. i'll let you know if they have to do a track break or whatever the other updates are coming up. all right. thank you very much. we continue our breaking news coverage of the vta rail yard shooting rampage. among the developments overnight a ninth victim now died from his injuries. doctors at valley medical center just couldn't save him. he was also the only survivor to be treated at a hospital. as we've been reporting since yesterday the gunman took his

own life. investigators are looking at evidence at his home which caught fire yesterday and neighbors there are finally being allowed to return. vta leaders are planning to hold another news conference later this morning to talk more about the workers who lost their lives in this horrific tragedy along with the impact for you on rail service. and more details now when you include the tragedy in san jose. the u.s. has now seen at least 232 mass shootings this year alone. that's according to the gun violence archive which defines mass shootings as those involved four. last year it was 600 even with the pandemic raging. scott mcgrew joins us now and, scott, the white house flag lowered at half-staff once again today. marcus was talking about those numbers, and we're
5:16 am
reminded how often our communities go through this grief. the number of times the president has ordered the flag lowered to half-staff above the what's is absolutely heartwrenching. mr. biden has only been president for five months, about 125 days, and that flag has been lowered five times for mass shootings. the most recent a shooting at a fedex facility in indianapolis but also shootings in south carolina, the king super shooting in boulder, the atlanta spa shootings as well. here's the vice president. >> it is absolutely tragic. it's absolutely tragic. i have family that live in san jose. i've worked for many, many years with the mayor of san jose and that police department. my prayers and my thoughts are with all of those families that have been affected. >> so prayers and thoughts and thoughts and prayers. that is, unfortunately, a standardized, if genuine, reaction. there are also the usual calls
5:17 am
in washington for gun control this morning as there are after each tragedy. now there was a time back in the 1990s when america was ready for gun control, and that, too, was because of a tragedy here in the bay area. the mass killing at 101 california at a san francisco law firm led the u.s. to institute an assault weapons ban. one fewer innocent person killed in that shooting than in san jose yesterday. but the u.s. was ready for change led by california senator dianne feinstein. >> yesterday our country was forced to endure yet another mass shooting. >> now that was feinstein in the senate just a few weeks ago. she was not talking about san jose. she was at the time talking about the massacre in boulder at the king supermarket which killed ten including a police officer. i'll return to what talking about, more than 200 mass shootings defined as four or more shot so far this year.
5:18 am
the most recent with the highest death toll was in colorado springs. that was 18 days ago. and i'm going to admit to you right now i don't even remember remember that one because they come so often. >> it's one after another and you sadly forget about the one before because then a couple weeks later or so there's another. something has to be done. the question is what? >> and now our kids -- are kids are asking about it. i had to talk to my kids about it yesterday. and then they're asking, can this happen -- could it happen in your work place? it's just horrible. it's horrible. and it hits so close to home. >> we've had that training. >> thanks, scott. >> it's 5:18. we want to take a moment to take a look outside. look at the golden gate bridge.
5:19 am
at first i thought the light was the sun. >> after that moon yesterday. >> it's just a light there. meteorologist kari hall tracking that. 5:18. how will it shape up? hopefully a nice sunrise, kari. it will be. and we're about 25 minutes away from sunrise right now. let me show you this live view from the cupertino hills. it is a beautiful start to this thursday morning. and we will have a slightly cooler day. a clear sky across the bay area. we'll get much more of an ocean breeze today. palo alto is heading up to 71 degrees and some upper 70s from the tri-valley to the inland east bay. some low 80s for santa rosa and morgan hill today reaching 78 degrees. check out the seven-day forecast as you make holiday plans. we are going to see some changes. we are seeing scattered showers to the north of us keeping it
5:20 am
cool for the next couple of days. but then high pressure builds and high pressure for us usually means heat. that's because it shifts our wind direction, our wind flow and with a northerly win it's going to make it feel hotter as those winds actually at times blow off the coast. so here is a look at the weekend planner if you are planning to go to the beach. for stinson beach some mid-60s. and then the warm-up on sunday. we'll see that across the bay area. much more comfortable and a milder warm-up from half moon bay to santa cruz compared to the inland areas where we'll go from the mid-70s to the mid-80s for san jose. livermore going from 81 degrees to 92 degrees on sunday. and that heat gets even hotter for memorial day. here is a look at our seven-day forecast. some 70s and 80s today for our warmest spots inland. going into memorial day, yes, 9.
