6:01 am
impacted as the third hour of "today in the bay" continues right now. and a good morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. our entire team has been covering the story since it first broke. we went on air for a day of extended coverage yesterday to bring you all the latest as this unfolded. and the news keeps coming. here is what we know this hour. the vta light rail facility in downtown san jose where this all happened remains locked down as detectives are still on the scene. >> the gunman killing nine people during that shooting before killing himself. overnight that ninth victim who was in critical condition at valley medical center died. at 10:00 this morning vta is holding a tuesday conference and more information about the employees who lost their lives. we have pictures of four of them.
6:02 am
taptejdeep singh, michael rudometkin, jose hernandez iii, 49-year-old timothy romo. 63-year-old abdolvahab alaghmandan and 63-year-old lars lane. we'll do our best to learn more about who these people were as they lived in our community. they were amazing. >> absolutely. this morning we will continue to bring you the very latest from our reporters throughout the bay area this morning. first kris sanchez is live and, kris, we're learning a lot about what happened and the act of heroism during scary times. >> reporter: we talked about the swift response because of the geography. the shesheriff's department acr the street. they actually did an active shooter training inside the rail yard just in the last year, and
6:03 am
so they were ready to go when this all happened. there were employees inside the rail yard who maybe prevented their co-workers from dying at the hands of that gunman as well. everybody shares their stories at their own pace. taptejdeep singh was 36. paul megia was 42 years old. we spoke with the singh family. they told us he was inside the rail yard, heard gunshots in the morning, called for his co-workers to get to safety, even shoved some of them out. the family waited for hours to find out what happened to him, agonizing the whole time and now that agony will continue forever as they know he will not see his 1 and 3-year-old children grow up. >> we suffer a lot.
6:04 am
he's family. he has too many friends. >> reporter: all of the families have been notified. we are hoping that they will share more about their loved ones with us in the hours and weeks to come. the city of san jose and the county of santa clara hosting a vigil at san jose city hall for people to gather together to try to heal from this knowing this is not the first time we've had a mass casualty event here in our community. we also received word from the sheriff this morning. we now know that gunman had two handguns on his person, but he also had 11 magazines. so he turned the gun on himself only when law enforcement approached him so he was in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> what happened yesterday, i've talk to friends all across the country calling in. i think the one thing a lot of people could do, that show of
6:05 am
support, is attend those vigils. i think it shows the family they're not alone in a situation like this. it's that one little thing that you can do to help out. thank you, kris. well, as for the gunman, the investigation is now well under way at his home. here is a map showing that house in relation to where the shooting was. it's in south san jose on angmar court just about eight miles from the vta rail yard. we have video that shows the gunman, sam cassidy, leaving his home yesterday morning. he was carrying a black duffel bag, putting it into his white pickup truck there right on his front driveway. police continue to guard that home this morning as well. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is on the scene. you were one of the first out there yesterday tell us what's going on. tell us about the person behind the scenes, what his neighbors
6:06 am
are saying about him. >> reporter: one neighbor didn't have very nice things to say about sam cassidy. cassidy was 57 years old, as we've been reporting, worked for the vta for the past several years and lived in the home behind me on angmar court just off mclaughlin in south san jose. san jose police officers are out here guarding the scene not letting people in unless they're a resident. this house caught fire yesterday morning around the same time that cassidy opened fire on his fellow co-workers. investigators are looking into whether cassidy used a timed device to start the fire at his home so that it would coincide with the shooting. a neighbor tells us cassidy lived by himself. as i mentioned, that he went friendly. cassidy's ex-wife tells the ap that about ten years ago cassidy had spoken about killing people at work. this morning on the "today" show sheriff laurie smith of the santa clara county sheriff's office says law enforcement is still trying to figure out the motive for yesterday's shooting.
6:07 am
>> we don't have that information now. obviously we're looking into that. what in the world could possibly pr of action? we don't know at this point. >> he scared me all the time. he never said hi. he don't say anything. he looks like a scared person. >> reporter: that was the neighbor i was speaking about earlier. investigators from several agencies including the fbi and atf spent much of yesterday here at the cassidy home collecting evidence. at one point the san jose bomb squad searched a home for explosive devices. none were found or they're not reporting any were found. neighbors were allowed to return to their homes last night. reporting live in south san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> since the neighbors have been allowed to go back home the threat is not there for them. how long are police expected to stay out there guarding the home? >> reporter: we're making the
6:08 am
assumption there's still part of the home that needs to be processed, so we're assuming the police are out here to guard the scene until the investigators come out here today. they're going to need the rest of the day and possibly tomorrow. we just don't know. >> bob redell, thank you. >> making sure it remains untouched. the investigation continues to unfold, loved ones grieve their losses. part of the main transit system is at a standstill this morning. that's affecting people that usually take vta. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson joins us live with more on that part of the story. >> reporter: yes, good morning, laura. folks are waking up this morning. many here in san jose and the greater bay area are grieving that tragedy that played out miles from where i'm standing, and as you can imagine vta working with those investigators in this investigation so there will be some pauses to the transit system here in the san
6:09 am
jose area. right now all light rail service is canceled, but vta tells us they are working to ensure the bus bridges are running along the light rail route. this morning commuters are asked to plan their trips using regular buses and with the disruption in service vta anticipating commuters and those travelers may have transportation related questions. for those questions vta is sharing their customer line number. you can see the number on your screen. you are asked to call that number if you have any questions. we'll continue to update our website nbcbayarea.com with any updated information, any information we receive from vta. mike has been keeping an eye on everything transportation related since the situation played out. mike, what can you tell folks getting out this morning? i want to make sure folks know the vta light rail service is canceled indefinitely. just like yesterday afternoon
6:10 am
they're trying to provide as much coverage as they can using a bus bridge. it may get confusing and you will be delayed. i put the number in the orange section there. do that before you plan your route. the freeways are moving relatively smoothly. like yesterday some unusual slowing southbound 880 out of hayward. overnight road work cleared as far as the grid goes. contra costa, alameda county. a live look at the toll plaza shows you the backup in the middle lanes and that will, of course, gradually build, maybe some haze out there. kind of cool but you have some definite changes ahead. yes. we are starting out with some cooler temperatures and a live look outside in san jose as the sun rises this morning and you're making your way out the door, we'll see our morning start at about 50 degrees. enjoy today and the next couple
6:11 am
of days because it will be a little bit cooler than we've seen recently. here we are our lunch time temperatures still in the 60s in the south bay and we'll see our highs in the mid-70s for this afternoon. here are some upper 70s to low 80s in the north bay and san francisco in the low 60s. i just got the drought update and we're going to check that out and talk more about it in a few minutes, laura and marcus. thanks so much, kari. 6:11 right now. ahead our breaking news coverage continues this morning. san jose for the rest of the bay area continues to be in mourning after being robbed by this latest mass shooting at the vta light rail yard. >> and we'll talk live to get more on the senseless violence and what lies ahead in the push for change. can some of that change come from washington? we'll have washington leaders' reaction as well.
6:12 am
when you're born and raised in san francisco, you grow up wanting to make a difference. that's why, at recology,
6:13 am
we're proud to be 100% employee owned with local workers as diverse as san francisco. we built the city's recycling system from the ground up, helping to make san francisco the greenest big city in america but we couldn't do it without you. thank you, san francisco. gracias, san francisco. -thank you. -[ speaks native language ] let's keep making a differene together.
6:14 am
right now at 6:13 as we get a live look outside from mt. allison, some exceptionally dry brush and hills around the bay area. just got the drought update. we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. and we're looking at the build from the toll plaza. not too dramatic but kicking in right now. those outside lanes are looking pretty good. that's the pleasant news. unfortunately, the flags lowered to half-staff.
6:15 am
the tragedy in san jose. we continue our coverage, laura. back over to you. trying to unfold any information at that we can for you this morning. so amongst some of the developments overnight a ninth victim has now died from his injuries. he died at valley medical center. this is the only survivor to be treated at the hospital. we know the gunman took his own life and now investigators are really trying to piece together why he snapped. what was his motive? they're being looking at evidence at his home which caught fire as well. neighbors there are finally able to return. vta leaders are planning to hold another news conference at 10:00 to talk more about the workers who lost their lives in this horrible tragedy along with the impact we're seeing on rail service which is shut down this
6:16 am
morning. joining us is the state senator cortese. >> i'm happy to be here in one sense and sad in another sense. >> it's a sad time for a lot of people. share with us your thoughts emotions when you first heard what happened. >> for those of us who lived through the garlic festival shooting a couple years ago, for those of us who lived through the michael johnson shooting, the san jose police officer shot by a mentally ill sniper as he did a routine welfare check, he was a close friend of mine, suddenly those feelings come up again, those feelings that you kind of pushed down a little bit so you could move on with your
6:17 am
life. they all start to surface again. >> a lot of people are just angry that nine lives were taken. and every time we have a situation like this we hear things of gun control, of gun reform. i know california has some of the strictest gun laws out of all the states here in the country. so what do we do here at this point? i know you pushed for gun reform. what do we do in a situation like this? do we add more for mental health? i'm turning to you as one of our elected officials. so many are locking for that answer. >> it's a great question. the vigils have already started and they'll continue and all of that is appropriate. to extend condolences at this point is not enough. when people do not feel safe in what should be some of the
6:18 am
safest places in the city of san jose, a place like the vta rail yard which is adjacent to the sheriff's office, across the street from where the county board of supervisors meets, in a place where maybe 800 or 900 government employees are coming in and out to that plaza and the police station is next door, all of a sudden people feel more unsafe than others. i've been focused on that from the mental health treatment side where we should be focusing but also this issue of finding out after the fact that somebody was unstable, that somebody was imbalanced mentally to the extent that they would do something like this and that combination of firearms ownership or possession combined with some of our more significant mental health
6:19 am
diagnoses, we have to deal with it. >> honoring those victims with a moment of violence, what advice or words do you have for the community that's hurting right now? >> we have to heal. one of the strengths of our community over the years has been its ability to heal, whether it was post-9/11, whether it was post some of the other tragedies that we've had. the community does a wonderful job coming together. the backbone of the community, i think, is still our faith community, our interfaith community, folks who take charge in situations like this and say we're going to come together. we're going to begin the healing process. we understand what to do. i think as elected officials there's more. the red flag laws that d.a. jeff rosen was talking about yesterday so poignantly need to be expanded and elaborated on i think by the state legislature.
6:20 am
i'll be reaching out to ask for his partnership in strengtheni between the data and information about folks who are unstable and shouldn't have guns in the first place. >> truly great change. senator cortese, thank you for taking the time to be with us this morning. >> thank you for keeping the public informed about everything that's going on. we appreciate it. >> and we do have more details for you now when you include the tragedy in san jose. just yesterday the u.s. is now seeing at least 232 mass shootings. that's just this year alone . last year in the u.s. more shooe covid pandemic raging. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. the white house flag lowered to
6:21 am
half-staff once again. of course this is happening throughout the country. marcus talking about those numbers, we're reminded how often communities like ours go through this grief we are experiencing. you look at the number of times the president has ordered the flag above the white house lowered and it is absolutely heartwrenching. mr. biden has only been president for five months, about 125 days and that flag has been lowered five times for a mass shooting. the most recent in the kings super in boulder and the atlanta spa shootings as well. here's the vice president. >> it is absolutely tragic. i have family that lives in san jose. my prayers and my thoughts with all of those families that have been affected.
6:22 am
>> prayers and thoughts, thoughts and prayers, these have all been, unfortunately, a standardized way, if genuine, of reacting to this. the usual calls for gun control as there are after every tragedy. there was a time back in the 1990s when america was ready for gun control and that, too, was because of a tragedy here in the bay area, the mass killing at 101 california at a san francisco law firm. one fewer inowe seven person killed in that shooting than in san jose yesterday. but the u.s. was ready for change at the time led by dianne feinstein. >> yesterday our country was forced to endure yet another mass shooting. >> now there was feinstein in the senate a few weeks ago not talking about san jose, of course. she was talking about the massacre in boulder at the king
6:23 am
supermarket which killed ten people including a police officer. marcus and laura, i'll return to what marcus was talking about, more than 200 mass shootings defined as four or more shots. so far this year the most recent with the highest death toll, i looked it up, was colorado springs at a birthday party. this is 18 days ago. i will admit i don't even remember that one at all. some of these you hear about them like king supers, oh, yes, i remember that. these ones not at all. they are coming so quickly. >> yeah, i think we're familiar with them in the news business is what we do but i think a lot of attitudes of people, well, it happened over there. it happened over there. but right now, for us, it happened right here. and for those people as well. the thing is they're just happening all the time. thank you very much, scott. a lot of people after this compassion is there with these people, these victims. how can we help them?
6:24 am
mayor sam liccardo asked the public to donate to a fund set up by the south bay labor council. that money will go to the families of the nine vta workers who lost their lives. we've posted information on how you can help. you can head to our website, nbcbayarea.com. also mayor sam liccardo will join us live a little later in this newscast and we'll talk to him about the fund and also his reaction to the shooting that happened yesterday. it's beauty, - [macaw vo] pretty boy. - or the beast.

right now at 6:26, a breaking drought update. we are now at the highest level of a drought much more in the bay area. look at how expansive for much of the region. we're not the only ones dealing with this very dry weather that we've seen recently and mainly due to la nina and the lack of rainfall we've seen. but as we get a closer look right now we are seeing much more of the north bay and parts of the sacramento valley. we'll be following that as we go throughout the day and more dry weather in the forecast. >> thank you very much. coming up next we'll have more breaking news coverage as well of the vta rail yard mass shooting. our team has spanned out across san jose. >> reporter: i'm kris sanchez just outside the maintenance yard where 24 hours ago the gunshots rang out. we're learning more about the victims.
6:28 am
we're learning more about the weapons that gunman had on his person. we'll tell you more about that. >> reporter: and i'm bob redell outside the suspect's home here in south san jose still under guard this morning. what law enforcement is saying about a possible motive. you're watching "today in the bay."

somebody was shooting. >> the pd has multiple units, code 3. >> this morning all of us woke up to a new nightmare. this one two blocks from my office. this whole county carries the scars, mental and physical, of gun violence. >> there's a numbness i imagine some of us are feeling about this. >> a somber and sad morning. nine families now know their loved ones will never return home. this all after a gunman, samuel cassidy, opened fire at a vt an rail yard in san jose, and the search for answers far from over. >> we're going to be there throughout the night to clear every room and every crevice of that building. >> where the investigation will play out from here. also, we're learning more about one of the victims now being called a hero for alerting others as the chaos unfolded. "today in the bay" continues right now. and a good morning to you am
6:32 am
thanks so much for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. we are approaching the 24-hour mark since all of this unfolded. and our entire team has been covering the mass shootings since the story first broke. here is what we know this hour. the vta light rail facility in downtown san jose where all this happened remains locked down as detectives are still at the scene. >> the gunman killed nine people before turning the gun on himself. the ninth victim died. at 10:30 this morning vta is holding a news conference and they will share more information about all of those employees who lost their lives. >> tragically, tragically. we do have pictures of four of them this morning. the youngest victim 29-year-old adrian balleza. also, 36-year-old taptejdeep singh. 40-year-old michael rudometkin and 42-year-old paul megia. 49-year-old alex fritch,

35-year-old jose hernandez iii, 49-year-old timothy romo, 63-year-old abdolvahab alaghmandan, and 63-year-old lars lane. we'll do our best to learn more about who they were and who they loved. >> our team live this morning across the bay area getting more information. we want to start with kris sanchez outside of the shooting scene. we're learning so much about the true heroism throughout not just from the officers but from those employees as well. >> reporter: right. santa clara county sheriff laurie smith said the suspect had two weapons on him and 11 magazines. perhaps he was planning a much -- an attack that could have been much worse if not for the quick action of law enforcement. the law enforcement agency just did an active shooter training here at this rail yard in the last year, so they were ready. and we know that inside the
6:34 am
building there were at least a couple of employees who helped their co-workers make it out to safety. we talk with the family of deep singh who said he heard gunshots and shoved some of his co-workers out. the family waited for hours agonizing and now that agony will never end. he has a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, and he will not see them grow up. >> we suffered a lot. this morning his body is still there. anybody could grab the purse and see the i.d. and who it is. it's the nicer one in the family. he's family. he has too many friends. >> reporter: now all of the families of the victims have been notified. santa clara county will be providing victims services to families and co-workers as they try to move forward. tonight people are invited to join together, to grieve together in community at san
6:35 am
jose city hall, the county and the city will be hosting a vigil there tonight at 6:00. we know that the motive is still in question. however, even when it's determined it will not make sense. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. we do have some more details for you right now. that gunman has been identified as samuel cassidy. police believe that he took his own life. 57 years old and an employee of vta. at this time that motive still unknown. >> we are getting reaction from some of his neighbors this morning. one describing him as scary and his ex-wife says he talked about killing co-workers. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell live with that and much more outside of the gunman's now burned-out home in san jose. any idea of why this may have happened?
6:36 am
>> reporter: not yet. not according to law enforcement. sheriff laurie smith says they do not know why samuel cassidy shot those nine people. they are investigating motive. san jose police are guarding his home here on angmar court in south san jose near the intersection with mclaughlin where cassidy lived. this surveillance video from a neighbor who lived across the street shows cassidy leaving his home yesterday morning. you can see him carrying a black duffel bag that he puts in the back of his white pickup truck. his house burned a little bit later. law enforcement is investigating whether cassidy set fire to his house using a timed device to coincide with the shooting. we spoke to his ex-wife. she said he would come home angry about work and in an interview with the ap said cassidy talked about killing people at work.
6:37 am
she never believed he would actually carry out the threat. >> i would tell him that's how it is on the job, you have problems, and people may not like you and you may not like so and so for whatever reason. that's how it is. sometimes he did not like my sponsor would get more mad. >> reporter: an ex-girlfriend who doesn't want to be identified said cassidy was you be unstable. she remembers him being angry with co-workers, being stressed with his job, and complaining about his bob. reporting live in south san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> wow. hard to hear all of these accounts of what he was like and now knowing what he did. thank you, bob. 6:37 for you this morning. mike, dealing with that situation, the vta service

highway 101. the bigger impact, ofcourse, the cancellation of light rail service. laura, over to you. we're trying to gather as much new information as we can in regards to the shooting rampage that happened yesterday morning just about this time right now. among the developments overnight a ninth victim has now died from his injuries at valley medical center. this was the only survivor to be treated at a hospital. as we've been reporting since early yesterday the gunman took his own life. now investigators are trying to piece together a motive why he snapped. they're looking at evidence at his home which caught fire yesterday. neighbors there are now being allowed to finally return to their own home. vta leaders are planning to hold another news conference this morning to talk more about the workers who lost their lives in this horrible tragedy.
6:44 am
we'll continue to follow that this morning along with the impact rail service affecting entire bay area that use vta. we're also learning b.a.r.t. board of directors will hold a moment of silence at their meeting today. >> more details to the people who lived in the bay area for some time probably find themselves thinking back to 1992. "the chronicle" reposted its front page following the 101 california shooting in san francisco. this is where eight people died before the gunman took his own life. san jose rampage is the deadliest in the bay area since. our investigative unit has looked at some of the more recent shootings and the locations include a tragedy at the university of oakland, u.p.s. facility in san francisco, the veterans home in yountsville, san bruno and most recently the gilroy garlic festival. that shooting happened nearly two years ago when the gunman killed three people including a 6-year-old boy.
6:45 am
this was before turning the gun on himself before deputies moved in. >> so tragic to see all of those and realize we've covered them all here in the bay area. this is not to mention the other tragedies that have happened across our nation. in fact, president biden says the san jose shotting is piercing the nation's soul. >> scott mcgrew, more reaction from the white house this morning. we've seen the president reacting with compassion and grief quite a few times now in the just 127 days he's been president. he, himself, so familiar with the loss of a spouse and a son and a daughter. the president writing immediately after the shooting the families who will never be whole again. there are children, parents, and spouses waiting to hear whether someone they love is ever going to come home. president biden has called for congress to take action but his own legislative agenda has not, in fact, included any major push
6:46 am
for gun control. after two mass shootings in a week in april, the president was asked whether he would push for significant change, and he said he would after the infrastructure bill. that led a top gun control advocate to say i'm disappointed he has the nerve and audacity to say he's going to do things in sequential order. it's out of order to have to bury your child. it's out of order to be shopping for eggs and have your life disrupted. president trump actually work closely with california's dianne feinstein, author of the assault weapons ban of 1990 on gun control after the stoneman douglas shootings only to reverse himself after meetings with the nra. governor gavin newsom, who has never been shy on his position on guns, was not shy when speaking about our tragedy. >> it begs the damn question what the hell is going on in the united states of america? what the hell is wrong with us?
6:47 am
>> here is a look at some of the other statements from bay area leaders. eric swalwell, enough is enough. lofgren, my heart is with you. laura and marcus, technology has made it very, very easy for leaders, and regular people, to speak their grief, as they should, and i'm sure they feel it. not a whole lot else has changed, unfortunately. >> you're right. thank you, scott. many people are asking, how can i help? how can i help the victims? mayor sam liccardo is asking the public to donate to a fund that's been set up by the south bay local council and that money will go to the families of the nine vta workers whose lives were taken. and we've posted that information on how you can help. just head over to our website nbcbayarea.com. once up get there you click on the how to help victims at the top of the trending bar, the top of the page.

our climate in crisis is heading home when it comes to our precious water supply. a major drought-related decision from the federal government may mean new water restrictions, really within weeks. the bureau of reclamation decided to drastically cut water shipments. a source the santa clara valley relies heavily on. as a result valley water leaders are reportedly hinting at tight new restrictions by the time the next meeting takes place on june 8th. and the drought related news, there are some big ones out there this morning. kari is keeping tabs on that for us. this is really concerning. it is and we've been seeing the impacts of exceptional drought. you have very little watt he and it's possible that we could see our fire season year round. look at how expansive this drought is where we see the

darker red that shows the highest level of drought and it's much of nevada and moving over to utah. much of arizona as well as new mexico. we are still looking at worsening conditions here in the bay area. now we're seeing more of this dark red shading in parts of the north bay, the east bay. it expands over to the sacramento valley and on to the north. so it's looking very dire at this point. and we've at least had cooler weather. spots reaching the low 80s. showers to the north will move out and high pressure will be moving in. that will change our wind direction and give us a dry northerly wind and our temperatures will be heating up. so we're going from the upper 70s in our inland valleys to the mid-90s by memorial day. it's going to be extremely hot

and some spots maybe even hotter than that. while san francisco, thankfully, doesn't see too much of a change here, keeping temperatures in the 60s through the weekend. mike, what's the update now on the morning commute? kari, still looking to the east bay. the big view but the arrow shows you southbound 880 through hayward still slow, clear by the time you get to highway 84. that's been the pattern for the last few days. we know this pattern, concord really jamming up. pittsburg, bay point, down to pleasant hill as well. and also slowing down the east shore freeway. these travel times are bumped up. the top two numbers cutting over for highway 4, 242 and 680 to walnut creek and the east shore freeway. richmond into berkeley is congested. back over to you. >> thanks, mike. happening now senate republicans are preparing to deploy a filibuster to block a commission on the capitol siege. a vote is expected later today. if the gop goes forward it will
6:51 am
be the first successful use of a filibuster this year. most republicans oppose the bill and the investigation into the january 6th attacks by donald trump supporters over the election results. breaking news coverage of the vta mass shooting continues just ahead. next on "today in the bay," more live team coverage including the new stories we're learning about some of the victims and what others are now saying about the gunman. we will also talk live to san hope say mayor sam liccardo to get his reaction to this horrific shooting. you're watching "today in the bay."

6:56 am
the first 911 call in just after 6:35 yesterday morning. where were you when you first heard the news, and what was your reaction? >> i was actually on my way to work at the time. i was going to be speaking at a conference and was hearing the news from the fire chief about a fire and then from our vta general manager and then finally from the police chief. a lot of information coming at once. we were trying to make sense of what was going on and very disorienting until we finally could determine that san jose police officers had gotten there to at least stop this horrible, horrible killing. >> i know they did what they could storming in and trying to prevent more lives from being lost. yesterday i know that you hinted at working on something but out of respect to the situation at hand and with compassion you didn't want to talk about it
6:57 am
then. can you tell us now about any possible new policies you're putting together after this tragedy? >> i think there are a lot of things we can do to prevent gun violence. i don't think anything i suggest will suddenly stop mass killings. this is the reality of a country with 300 million guns on the street and inadequate mental health resources, frankly. a couple weeks from now we'll hopefully be able to implement a measure that will reduce purchasing, require videotaping of gun purchases. something we've been working on around insurance mandates to reduce the public cost of gun violence. these are small, modest measures. there's no one measure that will suddenly stop gun violence but a lot of things we need to do and
6:58 am
mental health is a key component to start to really reduce gun violence which is an epidemic in all of our cities. >> i know you've offered messages of condolence to the families of the victims. you've asked the public to donate to a fund set up. tell us more about that. >> the council has stepped in to do everything they can to help families. we appreciate any donations folks may give. what we've seen certainly through this pandemic, we've had so many tragedies the last couple of years that our community comes together like no other. that heartens me and gets us on the paths.
6:59 am
>> that's what we can do. thank you for trying to lead us through this. tough days ahead as well. the vigil is coming up for the victims as well, but we thank you for taking the time to join us this morning. once again we talked about the fund that is being set up by the south bay labor council. you can find more about that on our website and i will try to tweet out more information. again, at 10:00 this morning vta holding a news conference. we'll share more information about the employees. tonight at 6:00 that community vigil will be held for all nine victims at the city hall plaza. we'll cover all of it on air and online, nbcbayarea.com. >> this has been an incredibly emotional 24 hours for so many people. right around this time yesterday we were just learning about the active shooter situation, just blocks away. >> and since then it's been so
7:00 am
