"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning and thank you for joining us. i'm marcus washington. the healing is starting to begin here in the bay area. more than 2,000 people gathered at san jose city hall plaza for a vigil to remember the vta employees whose lives were taken. cheryl hurd was at that vigil and talked to many family members. >> reporter: the memorial paying tribute to the nine people killed in wednesday's mass shooting is growing after hundreds came to honor them. the grieving started before the formal ceremony. paul de la cruz mexia's father wanting people to know about his son. >> he's a good father, and a good son and my best friend. we love you.

said her husband was proud to work for the vta. >> god took my best friend and husband and i'm wishing i could give him one last hug and tell him how much i love him. >> reporter: this man said no one will be able to replace his brother. >> my nephew an niece will not have a father. they're 3 and 1. no matter how much i love him, no matter how much everybody else lives him -- >> this morning everybody remembering the youngest victim, 29-year-old adrian balleza. his friends and family held a small get-together in front of yerba buena high school last night. for those when knew him since he was a kid, there's sadness and anger why they try to piece together why someone who knew him would take his life. michael rudometkin worked with

the vta since 2013 and was a graduate of mission college's apprenticeship program. 63-year-old abdolvahab slaghmandan was an employee for 20 years and 63-year-old lars lane worked for the vta since 2001 and was an electric mechanic. 49-year-old alex fritch died at the hospital. 35-year-old jose hernandez iii worked for vta since 2012. his father said jose had many friends and was always quick to lend a hand to those in need. now to the investigation. chilling new video this morning showing the gunman walking casually between the two buildings where he gunned down his co-workers. you can see him at the top left of your screen there.

it was taken just after 6:30 wednesday morning. right now investigators are still trying to collect evidence at the rail yard. they say that he was a very disgruntled employee for many years. reportedly he was detained by dhs in 2016 and had books on terrorism. ian cole has that new information. >> reporter: new surveillance video shows the suspect slowly walking between two buildings. deputies say this is after the first set of shootings and before he'd kill others, a black duffel bag in hand. federal sheriff and investigators continue to go in and out of the vta rail yard where nine people were killed. investigators recovered three semiautomatic handguns plus 32 extra clips with additional ammunition. >> there may be more guns because we haven't gone into his backpack. we're estimating preliminarily 39 shots fired. >> reporter: sources tell our investigative unit the evidence collected so far shows the gunman moved methodically going from room to room shooting at

close range. crime recreation experts set up their mobile unit, hoisted the american flag and began documenting multiple complex crime scenes. >> i don't think he was specifically targeting. there was someone there that was not an employee and he said to him i'm not going shoot you and then he shot others. i don't know if he was going for specific people or just shooting who was there that are employees. >> reporter: "the wall street journal" reporting homeland security officials flagged the gunman in 2016 when he returned from a trip to the philippines. customs agents found several books about terrorism as well as a black memo book filled with notes about how he hated the vta. at the suspect's house, at least nine gas cans were taken out of the home. the fbi says it lost a lot of evidence when the shooter's house burned in a fire they believe he started. among the things damaged may

have been cell phones and hard drives that could have helped in the investigation. ian cole, "today in the bay." law enforcement sources also tell us that the shooter's co-workers recently complained about him making racist remarks and boasting about having guns and explosives. we've also learned the shooter was subject to a hearing scheduled for wednesday. those can lead to discipline or termination from work. if you would like to honor the victims of the tragic shooting, you can donate to a fund that's been set up by the south labor council. that money will go to the families of the nine vta workers. if you'd like to know more about the nine victims lost, we posted about them on our website. just go to nbcbayarea.com. our team continues to update this gallery and you can find that information there. 4:37 this morning as we get started on your friday. mike keeping an eye on that commute, but first we have to start out with the forecast. friday forecast, kari, hopefully a good one for us.

>> yes, it will be. >> i'm sorry. we'll go to the forecast first. >> okay. we're going to have a really nice, pleasant day and also as we head into tomorrow we are going to continue that nice weather but we will be heating up from sunday into memorial day. so we are going to see our temperatures as you get ready to head out the door nice and cool, the sky is clear, enjoy today. we'll talk more about those temperatures ramping up. that's coming up in just a few minutes. we've also seen our high temperatures that have been very mild reaching into the 60s near the coast, some 70s for the inner bay and for the inland areas some low 80s in the forecast. so going into memorial day, we'll have some excessive heat watches in effect. we'll talk more about that. mike, how's the commute early? >> that excessive heat

definitely a concern coming up. i also wanted to touch on the follow-up for vta. there are much bigger issues and much bigger concerns for the family at vta, but for the practical purposes there is no light rail. once again it's cancelled until further notice. they're filling in with a bus bridge. look at the orange section, that's the number you should call if you have any questions regarding the schedule, the service. if you try to take the bus bridge, you'll probably be delayed a few minutes because of the potential for less coverage there. as we look at the rest of your maps, we are looking at a smooth flow of traffic for the freeways but there is debris north 87 coming up past coleman. there may be a traffic break. i don't think so given the amount of concern there is regarding response over there. a circle on 92 getting off of the san mateo bridge, an easy drive and a closure for highway 84 should be cleared up in just the next few minutes, marcus.

relax. >> yeah. today and tomorrow would be the best days for spending more time outside. by sunday you'll want to start to limit your time out there as temperatures in our inland areas will really start to heat up. here's a live look outside in san francisco and a lot of people may be visiting this place heading out for the weekend. if you have a long weekend, maybe catching a flight, it's going to be all good heading out this morning. let's get you to work in pleasant hill. so we're starting out with mid-50s in the east bay and we'll see a few clouds throughout much of the morning but also keep that ocean breeze that keeps our temperatures from warming up too quickly, so it's going to be a gradual warmup today as we head into the upper 70s for parts of the tri-valley as well as the south bay. morgan hill reaching 79. 80 in santa rosa and in san francisco 62 today. seven-day forecast is already up at the bottom of the screen, take a look at the heat that's headed our way in your microclimate. here's possibly a few

pop-up thunderstorms in the sierra. here we're dry and high pressure builds in. that's where we really start to see those temperatures heating up on sunday and it's mainly because it shifts our direction of wind. we no longer will have that ocean breeze. in fact our wind turns more northerly and that's going to make those temperatures heat up as it blows off the coast. so the national weather service highlighting these areas in red including solano county, much of the sacramento valley, for an area where we could have excessive heat. we're expecting temperatures anywhere from 105 to 108 degrees. so you do have to be really careful if you're going to be in those areas. here in the bay area we're also going to see our temperatures heating up from concord in the upper 70s tomorrow to the low 90s on sundays. livermore reaching near 100 degrees on memorial day. and our inland areas will see more of the same, but thankfully the spike in temperatures do not

last that long. we'll really start to cool off by next wednesday. mike, any problems heading out the door for the morning commute? >> kari, we do have one crash. there was a quick traffic break as well in contra costa county. let's take you out to the map and we'll show you up toward the benicia bridge. just around highway 4, northbound 680, there was a quick traffic break starting at concord av as they cleared the vehicles involved in the crash to the shoulder so no longer an issue. the residual slowing will clear shortly. over here still a closure picking up probably shortly as well, 84 through alvarado niles. and the crash getting off the san mateo bridge is still there. it looks like it's clearing. back to you. thank you very much, mike. the mass shooting at the vta comes as we approach the two-year anniversary of the gilroy garlic festival shooting. experts say you don't have to be directly involved in either
