attack as "today in the bay" continues right now. good morning to you, i'm laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. the healing is only starting and the vigils can be a powerful way for those grieving to realize they are not alone. kris sanchez is live outside san jose city hall. this is where a growing tribute for those victims is growing. we can see it behind you there, kris. >> reporter: hi there, marcus. there were so many people packed here in front of san jose city hall last night trying to make sure that the families knew that they were not alone. these families have lost so much. these men were sons, they were brothers, they were fathers, they were grandpas, and yet their families were generous enough to share some of their stories with us. these are the vta nine. some of them were at the beginning of their careers and some nearing retirement, driving buses, operating light rail trains, repairing the

overheadlines. many families talking about how much their loved ones loved their jobs but all of them spoke of how much they loved their families. paul megia, his family was here. his wife said he was full of life, jokes and energy. this is his father, his son and his wife. >> he's a good father and a good son and my best friend. we love you. >> i won't know how to do all these activities like snowboarding, wakeboarding, i won't know how to do all this without him. >> god took my best friend and husband too soon and i'm wishing i could give him a hug one last time and tell him how much i love him. >> reporter: now, that family said something that other families also echoed, that they never thought they would find themselves in this situation

trying to talk about their loved one in a public setting, at a public vigil and memorial. other families spoke of not knowing how to process what happened on wednesday. we'll share more of those family stories through the morning. if you are moved to help these families heal and move forward, we have a link to resources at nbcbayarea.com. kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right, kris, thank you. we spoke with the father of jose hernandez as well. he says he's still in shock but wanted to talk about his son whose life ended much too soon. >> what i'm going to miss the most is i know i'm not going to hear the sound of his motorcycle or the sound of his car when he was stopping by. >> the 35-year-old worked for vta since 2012. jose's father says he had many friends and was always quick to lend a hand to those in need. >> away from the large memorial at city hall, friends and former

classmates of the shooting victim adrian balleza held a smaller get-together at yerba buena high school. the recurring thing from friends and teachers alike said adrian always seemed to be smiling or was making everyone around him smile. >> i knew exactly who he was. i knew his first and last name which after 19 years of teaching, 150 kids every year, it's hard to remember faces and names, but he was unforgettable. >> that was his former teacher. now, the laughs and fond memories helping them deal with this pain but they say it does not mask the shock that adrian is gone. 40-year-old michael rudometkin was a childhood friend of city council member raul morales. he was a graduate of mission college's apprenticeship program. 63-year-old abdolvahab alaghmandan was a vta

employee nearly 20 years. he was a substation maintainer. 63-year-old lars lane worked for the vta since 2001 as an electromechanic and overheadline worker. 49-year-old alex fritch died at the hospital. he was a substation maintainer. now chilling new video showing the gunman that was walking methodically between the two buildings where he gunned down those co-workers. investigators are still at the rail yard collecting evidence. nbc bay area learned that he was going to be subjected to a disciplinary hearing scheduled for the day of the attack. >> bob redell is live outside of the scene of that shooting in san jose. bob, do we know why that hearing was scheduled? >> reporter: well, law enforcement sources tell our investigative unit, marcus and laura, that the vta employee who shot and killed nine of his co-workers at the facility behind me was under investigation for allegedly making racist remarks to his

co-workers and that on wednesday, the day of the shooting, he was scheduled to attend what's known as a skely hearing, which could have led to discipline or another determination. in recent weeks the suspect bragged about having guns and explosives. the sheriff's office describes him as, quote, a highly disgruntled vta employee for many years. yesterday law enforcement released this new surveillance video from the vta maintenance yard that shows the suspect with a black duffel bag. you can see him in the top portion of your screen there, walking from one building where he had just shot some of his co-workers and walking to a second building where he would shoot more. sources tell our investigative unit that evidence collected so far indicate that the gunman moved methodically going from room to room shooting at close range more than three dozen times. >> i don't think he was specifically targeting. there was someone there that was not an employee, and he said to him "i'm not going to shoot you" and then he shot others.

i don't know if he was going for specific people or just shooting who was there that are employees. >> reporter: investigators recovered three semiautomatic handguns plus 32 extra clips with additional ammunition. at the suspect's home about eight miles south of here, investigators removed at least nine gas cans that the suspect might have used to set his house on fire. the fbi says that the fire destroyed a lot of evidence, possibly including cell phones and hard drives that could have helped in their investigation. reporting live here in downtown san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a lot of people stepping in to do what they can. all right, bob, thank you. for the first time vta employees were allowed back to the yard to get their belongings and their cars. one man told us that one victim saved his life. he was in building b at the vta yard wednesday when his phone rang.

is the issue still for vta. they have cancelled light rail service understandably indefinitely until we get further notice. they're going to have a bus bridge in place to cover that route. we're looking at the number 408-321-2300 to get any questions answered. there are no other delays reported for the other transit agencies. roadways are moving pretty smoothly right now. a nice easy flow of traffic even toward the benicia bridge. the earlier crash did clear. no more delays through contra costa county and just your typical early friday morning traffic. back over to you, kari. >> and we are starting out with nice, cool weather across the bay area, some fog near the coast. that's what's helped to keep it cool so we continue on with pleasant weather for today and tomorrow. but then on sunday, our temperatures start to heat up as we lead into the holiday. if you're about to step out the door in oakland, expect our morning start with some clouds in the mid-50s and then we'll

right now at 5:12 as we get started on our holiday weekend, whether you're going for a hike or just stepping out for a few minutes for some fresh air, we're going to see you are temperatures in the north bay starting out at 52 degrees and reaching into the upper 70s for this afternoon. just a mix of sun and clouds but we are getting ready for high heat. more on that and the forecast coming up in a few minutes. well, i am looking at reports of a car fire, getting more confirmation and we'll check on where that is exactly but it looks like somewhere in the tri-valley. meanwhile a live look outside shows you traffic flowing west. 580 coming in out of the altamont pass. traffic flows smoothly in the eastbound direction.

but traffic may be right now we've got some work to do with bertha. that's right, good morning. i'm bertha coombs from cnbc. wall street is set to open higher this morning. we've got futures pointing to the dow opening up about 150 points or so. we've got some data coming this morning, though, as well. yesterday we saw the dow up about 140 points, the s&p was up fractionally and the nasdaq was flat on the day. for the week and for the month both the dow and the s&p higher, the nasdaq down for the month of may as we close out the first half of the year. we've got some data coming this morning. we'll be looking at consumer prices and spending. also we'll be spending at manufacturing data as well as consumer sentiment. i'll having trouble with my prompter but let's talk about airbnb. airbnb is going to extend that ban that they did last summer on

having big parties at people's homes. if you rent one, at least through the end of this summer, they are basically trying to avoid getting these large gatherings that make people more susceptible to covid. certainly there's some owners who don't like the thought of big parties either. there's going to be a lot of demand this summer as more people are getting vaccinated and more people want to travel, so you're likely also going to pay more to travel anywhere this summer because of that high demand. they also are going to make it so that if you do not have a good rating or if you don't have any long history, you will not be able to do a one-day rental for the fourth of july weekend. i know you don't have an issue because have great ratings and you are not destructive, but if you're going to have a big party, do it at home. back over to you.

limits could change with health restrictions loosening. california hoping cold, hard cash will entice more people to get vaccinated. if you've already gotten vaccinated, i'll feel your pain with this next story. governor newsom announcing a new incentive aimed at getting people to roll up their sleeves. the next 2 million californians to get their shots will get $50 gift cards. then on the first two fridays in june, ten people will be picked to split, get this, $15 million jackpot. 30 others will each win $50,000. >> these are an opportunity to say thank you to those not only seeking to get vaccinated as we move forward, but also those that have been vaccinated. >> i bet if you're fully vaccinated, you're like, damn, i could have waited. any californian who has at least started the vaccination process by the drawing date is entered to win. now, if the winner is underage,

and we are going to see some nice weather heading into the start of our holiday weekend. that's the key. let's get a look at our beautiful sunrise. we're less than 30 minutes from seeing the sun coming over the hills of the south bay and we are going to have another beautiful one for any more time outside. let's head out to the park in milpitas today. we'll see temperatures in the mid-50s. there will be some clouds in the mix but that also slows down the warming we'll see for today. the seven-day forecast is already up. yeah, take a look at that before you make some weekend plans. we are going to reach into the upper 70s. a few spots in the north bay will be in the low 80s today, but some mid-60s for oakland and some low 60s for san francisco. as we go through the forecast, we are looking at a chance of some pop-up showers and thunderstorms in the sierra. here in the bay area remaining quiet, but our temperatures will really start to ramp up on sunday as this high pressure gets closer and those temperatures will actually peak

on memorial day before that high pressure moves on. so let me show you a few spots where you may be headed. napa, we go from 79 degrees on saturday to 90 on sunday and 95 degrees on memorial day. san francisco, the warming is a lot milder, so we'll reach into the mid-70s on memorial day. while santa cruz will have a heat up with temperatures in the low 80s there. for our inland temperatures as we go into the next several days, pool weather on sunday and monday. tuesday, a lot more people heading back to work. we'll still have some low 90s and it will bring it back to the mid-80s by the end of next week. san francisco will go from the low 60s to the mid-70s on memorial day. , i know a lot of people willeling for the first time this weekend. >> exactly. a lot more folks hitting the roadways. we've seen that in the morning and evening commutes as well, the volume increasing. right now things are pretty

calm. there is a crash south 101 at whipple. it may be in the slow lane, at least for the next few minutes. over here a big concern, car fire on highway 84. it's eastbound as far as the direction goes but one lane in each direction at times through that area. dry grass on either side so watch out. that will slow you down getting into or out of livermore. you might have to continue over toward the dublin interchange for that commute into livermore if they have blocked the off-ramp. i want to let you know, folks, today is the final friday of the asian-american pacific islander heritage month so we're going to continue with our coverage over on the social media side here. i wanted to get you to my facebook post as we're looking at -- yep, there you go on the facebook post we're talking about do you think they all look alike? we're talking about the asian written languages. granted there might be a lot of similarities amongst a lot of them. you see them here, a number of them. there are pretty specific ways to identify them. i've got some of those listed

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live out there with what was a difficult night for the community. >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. the flags are here at half staff this morning in memory of these victims who died so senselessly on wednesday. so many people showed up here at city hall plaza to show their

support and to offer the family whoever comfort is possible in this really difficult moment. so now there are flowers and candles surrounding the vta nine who spent years working to keep the public transportation here in this county going. you may have ridden on their buses or their light rail trains years ago or been on the ones that they worked to keep running smoothly. many of the families talked about how much their loved ones loved their jobs, but all of them spoke of how much they loved their families. the men were sons and brothers, husbands and fathers. >> almost every time i talked to my dad he's always say who's my favorite little girl, and i'd always respond, i'm your only little girl. >> reporter: she went on to say that he was the funniest man and she was going to miss him forever. the other families also spoke of not knowing how to process what happened on wednesday. we'll share more of the families' stories through the morning.

hearing that could have led to possible discipline or even termination from his job here at the vta. this is all according to law enforcement sources who told this to our investigative unit. yesterday the santa clara county sheriff's office, if you want to look at your tv screen, they released new video from the maintenance yard that shows the suspect with a black duffel bag in the top portion of the screen walking from one building where he had just shot some of his co-workers to a second building where he would shoot more. sources tell our investigative unit that evidence collected so far indicates that the gunman moved methodically going from room to room, shooting at close range more than three dozen times. investigators recovered three semiautomatic handguns, plus 32 extra clips with additional ammunition. sources also tell us that in recent weeks the suspect bragged about having g explosives. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, before you go, just what you said right there, it's no

surprise that the department of homeland security actually had interest in the gunman prior to wednesday's shooting. >> reporter: correct, marcus. "the wall street journal" reports that the department of homeland security had flagged this suspect back in 2016 when he returned from a trip to the philippines. custom agents found on him several books about terrorism as well as a black memo book filled with notes about how he hated the vta. marcus. >> all right, bob redell live for us this morning. bob, thank you. well, mental health experts say you don't have to be directly involved in a mass shooting to be emotionally impacted. at last night's city hall a community vigil for the vta victims, several people encouraged people to seek out emotional support and ask for help if they need it. san jose state adjunct professor of psychology says violence can impact every member of the south bay community and beyond. >> the biggest piece here that

we'll look at the impact as we look at the grid. we're talking about light rail service. that's still cancelled, but vta continues to provide service using buses to bridge that gap. call that number if you have any questions. the rest of the bay, south bay included, move very smoothly except for the tri-valley. this is the concern, kari. we have a car fire in the dry hills here just heading towards livermore, eastbound 84 is closed at little valley road. that will mean folks are backing up heading out of livermore and pleasanton getting over toward 680 as well. your alternate would be sunol boulevard or the dublin interchange. we're tracking that and again the car fire in those dry hills, kari. >> i hope they can put that out soon, mike. that's really going to be a concern as we head into the holiday weekend as well as a lot of people hitting the road. you just want to be careful out there. if you're going to sfo, here's a view this morning of some patchy fog and we're going to see our

temperatures across the state heading into the mid-70s for l.a. in san diego we're going to reach 68 degrees. 102 in palm springs. lake tahoe mid to upper 70s and mt. shasta in the low to mid-80s. if you're traveling beyond that spot, just a big heads up that parts of the midwest and east coast are expecting very cool temperatures and some off-and-on showers. but as of right now no flight delays. across the country everything looks to be on track, especially here across the region. so the flights are looking good at this point. if you will be maybe driving or flying to l.a., expect temperatures in the low 70s for today and tomorrow. really nice holiday weekend ahead. and if you're going farther to the north, maybe enjoying some more outdoor time, expect temperatures to heat up. shasta trinity national forest reaching 103 on sunday. we'll talk about the high heat and fire danger in the bay area coming up in a few minutes,

laura and marcus. >> all right, sounds good. we'll check back with you, kari. new stanford research shows just how long some covid patients continue to suffer from ongoing symptoms. sometimes they're referred to as long haulers, meaning people still experiencing covid symptoms months after getting sick. researchers found more than 70% of hospitalized covid patients reported lingering symptoms. they include depression, shortness of breath, fatigue, brain fog, and the continued loss of taste and smell. most of the patients studied initially had moderate to severe covid cases. >> i know i'm not alone in this one. do you finding yourself slipping more often when it comes to following the covid safety measures? maybe forgetting your mask in the car or the house? if so, you're not alone. fewer than half of americans have maintained proper social distancing over the past week. mask wearing outdoors is down 13 percentage points over the past two weeks and now at they do no trust complete strangers to be

have a disciplinary hearing the day he opened fire killing nine co-workers before taking his own life. authorities so far not speculating about a motive. the rail yard has been closed with the light rail service suspended ever since wednesday morning's rampage. there's still no timetable of when that's to reopen. hundreds of people gathered for a vigil last night at san jose city hall. this is to remember the friends and loved ones they lost. the u.s. senate still in a holding pattern on a planned procedural vote for a possible 9/11-style commission to investigate the capitol siege. if and when a vote does happen, the yes votes are not expected to be there. gop senators may also deploy a filibuster. yesterday the mother of a d.c. police officer who died one day after the siege came to ask lawmakers to support it. gladys sicknick says she wants answers and can no longer remain silent. >> this is why i'm here today. usually i'm staying in the

background and i just couldn't stay quiet anymore. >> her son's cause of death was later determined to be natural causes. brian sicknick suffered two strokes after fighting the insurrectionists for several hours. leaders on both sides of the aisle meantime are admitting to the broad divide when it comes to president biden's $1.7 trillion infrastructure plan. senate republicans yesterday submitted their own pared down counteroffer. it comes in at under $1 trillion. it also loses some of the president's key elements, including spending to fight climate change. the gop measure is focused on core infrastructure, including bridges, roads, transit systems and water storage. 5:47. a big holiday weekend is officially upon us. many californians have travel plans with it being the first holiday since the vaccine rollout. here's a live look at sfo and the bay bridge this morning. you can expect both of those spots to be very busy today.

sierra -- cierra johnson is live with what travelers should anticipate. >> reporter: good morning and happy friday. we are officially approaching that long memorial day weekend. things here at sfo are relatively quiet. those crowds are coming in spurts. right now there's only a few airlines that have flights leaving. but this situation can change in just a matter of hours. that's because all three major airports here in the bay area are expecting some big crowds. let's start with what the folks here at sfo are expecting to see this long holiday weekend. officials say right now they're still 50% below pre-pandemic passenger levels but are expecting an uptick in travel. just last week this airport saw a high of 31,000 passengers in just one day and they're saying they could see as many as 38,000 passengers on a peak day coming soon. today is also expected to be the busiest day of holiday travel.

this weekend at oakland airport with more than 30,000 passengers expected to pass through and more than 130,000 for the entire long weekend. those with destinations that require proof of a negative covid test, airport officials say that free testing is available there on site at the oakland airport. heading down south, san jose is much of the same story. an increase in the number of travelers for this holiday weekend. it's the unofficial start of summer and it's expected to bring more than 58,000 passengers through this airport compared to just 8,700 this time last year. and in addition to more travelers, airports like oakland are continuing to reopen some of those closed shops andyour favor airport is opening. we did have a chance to speak with some folks right before i was live this morning. they said they're excited about traveling, but they said they still want to remain vigilant. we are still in the middle of a pandemic.

over $13,000 in fines as well as a suspended license. >> an important reminders from cal fire ahead of the three-day weekend. conditions across the state will lead to higher fire danger. they're tweeting, reminding everyone to be extra cautious enjoying the outdoors. something to keep in mind as you make plans to do a memorial day barbecue. you know what, if you're doing that, hopefully the forecast lines up with all of that fun outside. meteorologist kari hall has a look at that and what we can expect. hopefully the forecast is participating. >> yes, but it's going to be hot and we've been talking about the fire danger. that was the big story coming out of yesterday's update of the drought monitor, that the drought is expanding. no sprinklers -- or sparklers, no fireworks. don't even do the charcoal. you have to make sure that you dispose of them properly if you are going to be grilling this weekend because it just takes a small spark to cause a fire to

spread very quickly. we've had extremely dry vegetation and now we're going to be dealing with some heat. so look at these areas shaded in red. that's under an excessive heat watch. it includes solano county over towards the sacramento and san joaquin valleys. we're also going to see in those spots temperatures reaching 105 to 108. yes, it's going to be unbearably hot in a lot of those areas. here in the bay area we're also going to be heating up. so here's what's going on. high pressure building. it's changing our wind direction and also compressing that air, making it warm up as it comes down toward the ground and we are also going to see at times some gusty winds. we could also see some showers developing over the sierra and that's going to kick up some high winds moving through the valley and into the bay area. we do have a couple of more days of the mild temperatures and ocean breeze that's bringing in higher humidity, that westerly wind and our temperatures today staying in the low 60s.

as we go into the next couple of days, you can see the temperatures that will be heating up. so i wanted to show you a spot like concord. very nice for today and tomorrow, but then on sunday we reach into the low 90s and then some mid-90s on memorial day. thankfully that hot weather doesn't last that long. we'll go back to more seasonal weather for the middle of next week. here's what to expect once again. some low 80s today and then 90 degrees on sunday reaching 97 degrees on memorial day for many spots inland. and then we'll see some sunshine and also some of the cooler temperatures moving in by next wednesday and thursday. san francisco will also warm up just a little bit, though. still staying comfortable with highs in the low 60s today but then we'll see some low to mid-70s for the start of next week. so really watching that fire danger, mike. what are you watching right now for the morning commute? >> kari, we had that car fire over there in sunol just off of 680 for highway 84 in the dry

area with the brush there. fortunately it cleared. no injuries and no spreading from what i understand. and in fact the slowing has cleared up very quickly. so a little slow as you cut down from 680 -- or from 580 over to 680, cutting that corner of the dublin interchange but that will recover quickly. a little slowing over here on the nimitz heading down through union city and that's pretty typical all week over there. no other problems throughout the area, a very smooth drive as we look at the south bay and peninsula. no slowing through concord or bay point just yet. antioch a smooth drive. friday sees a lighter commute of course. as we look outside, we see live shots of the golden gate bridge. the drive is a smooth drive but there's low clouds hovering around. no problem for visibility. that's a great shot here. we'll get more traffic because it is a holiday weekend so folks will visit spots like the golden gate bridge and also west 92, like the taillights here heading over towards the coast. 92 goes through the hills over toward half moon bay. back over to you.

>> thanks, mike. well, some new help at hand for people in san francisco struggling to make it in the bay. applications open today for millions of dollars in rent relief. the city is providing $90 million for new emergency rental assistance program. it can provide up to six months of rental assistance, including three months of future rent. and the city's most vulnerable tenants will get priority, including those who have been homeless before or families with extremely low income. hey a's fans, did you harry the coliseum opens at full capacity just about a month from now. the first fully reopen game takes place june 29th. mark that on your calendars. the a's have opened a four-game series against the angels at the coliseum. there's a little controversy behind this one. did you hear? last night the angels star ohtani was supposed to pitch but the team bus got caught up in bay bridge traffic of all things. so he and the other players, they had to jump on b.a.r.t.
