records for memorial day monday. who will be climbing into the 100 degree temperature range. first, san jose continues to grieve after the mass shooting at the vta rail yard. emotional scenes in front of city hall. plus, people who live near the gunman tell us what's happened to their neighborhood since law enforcement left. the news at 4:30 starts right now. thanks for joining us. the grieving continues as the memorial outside city hall grows. many never even knew the victims. >> nbc's bay area christi smith is live at city hall. there's a new resource for people who are hurting right now. >> reporter: yeah, that's right. throughout the day people have been stopping by, spending time here quietly looking at the pictures, the flowers, the growing memorial. and there are efforts underway. chaplain is here to speak with

people who want to talk. this woman named sylvia brought flowers and a candle to the memorial at city hall. >> i'm a citizen of the -- of this community and i care rr she did not know the nine vta employees who were killed but was shaken by the tragedy and remains heart broken for the grieving families. >> i care and i hurt. it hurts that all these people are suffering. >> reporter: chaplains are here for the people who come by. >> we are there to listen to them and based upon what they share with us, then we're able to respond back to them. we want to provide that emotional care and spiritual care as well that they ask for. >> reporter: the vta rail yard where the gunman carried out his assault remains taped off and there were little signs of

activity. a few miles south the home where the shooter lived is still boarded up with debris in the front yard. investigators found multiple cans of gasoline inside, suspected molotov cocktails and 20 rounds of various ammunition. today it was quiet except for a delivery driver leaving a package there. it's the first day since law enforcement left the scene. neighbors say people are driving by to see it. >> you never know who lives next to you. >> jackie roblis said the gunman seemed peculiar when people pulled up. >> i know a lot of people left. >> reporter: now the chaplains tell us that they plan to be here at least through wednesday. again, they keep an eye as people continue to come by and grieve. reporting live in san jose, christie smith, nbc bay area news. >> we see them hugging each other there in the background.

thanks so much. a somber moment for what should have been an exciting day in san jose. the tech interactive reopened for the first time after being closed since the pandemic. the museum used the opportunity to honor the lives of those lost in the shooting. the reopening ceremony started with a moment of silence. after paying their respects, dozens of families filed through the front doors. tech interactive as we mentioned has been closed for more than a year. reaching out to neighbors in the south bay during a very difficult time. chalkboards are going up throughout sacramento. people are encouraged to write messages of love and support for people affected by the vta shooting. organizers hope the well wishes will provide some closure and relief to victims families and encourage californians to come together. >> people are terrified that this is going to happen in their community so they definitely reciprocate well. you can just also see from the messages themselves, a lot of them are positive and just trying to spread love and peace.

we're seeing begins to go away as we head towards tomorrow. so while we've got some 70s and 80s inland today, look at our high temperatures tomorrow. up towards santa rosa, 97 degrees. even bay side locations like san francisco and oakland seeing highs in the 70s and 80s. we'll trend even hotter by monday. some places adding 30 degrees on top of today's temperatures. it will be 100 degrees to wrap up the holiday weekend inland. things will get progressively hotter and dryer and breezy at times. fire danger is something we have to watch closely as we also head into monday where the humidity levels could be dropping into the teens on top of some very dry hillsides made worse by exceptional drought as we saw expanding across the bay area. we'll talk more about how long these hot temperatures and dry temperatures will stick around. seven day forecast coming up in

ten minutes. we have a live look at the area. tsa says nationally 1.9 million people were screened at airport security yesterday. again, the busiest day since the pandemic began. comes as more and more americans are vaccinated and ready to travel once again. for the first time in more than a year, many of the nation's health experts do not expect a major surge in covid cases after a long holiday weekend. nbc's chris pollone explains why. >> reporter: the unofficial start to summer, soggy and cold on the eastern seaboard. windy and wet in texas. less than ideal conditions for some of the 37 million americans projected to travel this long holiday weekend. the nation's airports are as busy as they've been in more than a year with the vast majority of travelers hitting the road. >> traffic is ridiculous.

devastating fire damaged part of big basin redwood state park is back open, the cvu fire burned 97% of the historic park. the most popular part of the park across from waddell beach reopened to visitors. more of the park will reopen as experts assess the damage. it's expected to be years before the public can enjoy the whole park. the state has set aside tens of millions of dollars to help. vietnam has discovered a new covid variant that spreads easier than other versions of the virus. if the hybrid first found in india and the united kingdom. earlier in the pandemic vietnam was a standout success in battling covid. in the past few weeks they have seen 3500 new cases. health experts say the new variant could be to blame. vietnam has banned all religious events and closed public parks and non- the major cities. coming up, it is the second year of carnival during the pandemic.

there was a two-alarm fire in oakland this afternoon. you can see it in this video right here. this was posted on the citizen app. this is the sunshine biscuit building on 81st avenue in oakland. used to be a cookie factory but now has at least 46 residential units. the fire started on an outdoor deck. >> time to stop. here are pictures posted on facebook. several agencies have more officers on patrol. they're hoping to prevent what happened last weekend.

that's when they stopped four side shows. they stopped more than 50 cars. they issued a dozen citations and towed cars. they confiscated two guns made one arrest. they hope this shows they are not messing around. a very covid carnival this weekend. they're celebrating over two days this year instead of the week-long series of events. the theme is our existence is resistance. it's part vaccination clinic, part community resource fair and part celebration. the pandemic hit san francisco's latin excommuity hard. all good things come to an end but not without a proper good-bye. today a dance party at portsmouth square in san francisco marked the end of aapi heritage month.

the group called revive san francisco chinatown hosted that party highlighting voices of the asian community. this was the group's first event to unite the community during a very difficult year. organizers say the aapi community is stronger than they think and it's important to stick together. congratulations to hundreds of high school students in pleasantton. amador valley high school held the graduation in person. they were ecstatic to graduate with their friends. they posted these pictures on twitter. you can see students wore masks. seated slightly apart outdoors on the football field. families were also seated in distanced pods. now among the graduates, terry? >> i saw her sending this out on twitter. >> on twitter. >> our very own jessica aguere's daughter olivia. >> we want to say congratulations. >> fantastic. that's a sign that things are getting back to normal. >> yeah.

degrees hotter by this time tomorrow out in the tri valley. 66 degrees northwest wind at 13 miles per hour. so air quality wise there is enough wind to keep things moderate for air quality sunday. keep an eye on the aqi numbers for monday. we'll get close to the spare the numbers for monday. memorial day plans. allergies. we haven't had a lot of rain to rinse some of the stuff out of the skies. moderate. not high. pine, oak, olive, cedar, grass pollen. a pretty big lineup. south of highway 50 this afternoon, getting the thunderstorms firing up. that will start to weaken once the sun sets. from thunderstorms in the sierra to the drizzle storm that continues on the coast and all the fog you saw there along the san mateo bridge across the bay. you see it right there in the satellite. south of the bay bridge over the san mateo bridge. not quite to the dunn barton

bridge. you still have the fog. banked up along the santa cruz mountains. good strong case of ocean air. we wake up similar to what we had this morning with more low clouds. drizzle and fog on the coast. unlike today, clearing skies even out near the coast as temperatures start to climb over the next couple of days. patchy fog inland. some 40s and 50s to start the morning off. as we head towards the afternoon, take a look at the temperatures tomorrow. upper 80s in san jose. saratoga, 90 degrees. hottest places, contracosta county and you'll see numbers up in the mid to upper 90s tomorrow. oakland, 87 degrees. peninsula temperatures into the 70s and 80s. the temperatures on the peninsula even hotter than the areas in the bay area. downtown san francisco likely into the 70s. north bay, numbers here starting to climb through the mid to upper 90s. so the heat setting up in the

north bay and then by memorial day, monday, heat advisories in the north bay and east bay valleys where we could climb above 100 degrees. concord, livermore, fairfield, santa rosa. san francisco, 80 degrees. 90s. that's your memorial day monday with the hot temperatures trending cooler back into the low 90s inland as they give up some ground. you see how the high starts to weaken. storm passing by the north. a little bit of cooling into thursday and friday then as we head towards next weekend. first weekend of june, just like that the year just flies on by. could see another warming trendsetting up for next weekend. take a close look. san francisco, monday the hottest day. could be near record on monday at the bay. 80s and 90s. upper 90s to 100 degrees. trending cooler, really kind of a two to three-day heat spell before things cool down for the

california has the nation's strictest gun laws. that was not enough to stop this latest mass shooting. tonight nbc bay area investigator takes a closer look at the laws we have and whether they're working. >> through the loss and pain and anger, there is what is becoming an all too common question in these tragedies. >> could the mass shooting in san jose have been prevented? >> i think it could have. >> robin thomas is executive director of the giffords law center. >> what we have is the easiest access to incredibly lethal firearms of any country in the world. >> what do you say to those who point to the fact that while california has already some of the toughest gun laws in the country, the state is still susceptible to gun violence. >> we have one of the lowest

rates of gun violence in the country because of comprehensive regulations. no matter how good california's laws are, if we don't have federal regulationthem. the truth is guns are being trafficked from states with weak laws to states with strong laws. >> it won't make us any safer argues california assembly man james gallagher. instead, he wants to increase the number of mental health providers and better equip schools to better identify troubled individuals at younger ages. >> the issue is not the inanimate object they use to kill themselves. >> they would argue what all of these mass shootings have in common are people used guns to kill people. >> people can use trucks to kill people, people can use bombs to kill people. i mean, what's the answer? do you want to ban all guns and no one can ever own a gun? >> those on both sides of the

gun debate do agree on at least one thing. california needs to do a better job of adhering to the laws it has on the books. the state is one in 20 that allow gun restraining orders where the government can take away someone's firearm if they're thought to be a threat to themselves or others. in california more than 1200 guns were taken away from people last year but today there are still more than 23,000 people in the state who still have their guns. even though they've been banned from owning them. >> lives are at stake. >> dr. darryn winton heads the violence prevention program at uc davis. the findings are due out later this year, but winton says it's clear part of the program's problems include a relatively small staff responsible for collecting guns from people all across the state. >> the transaction at the door is, hi, we're sorry. we understand that you own firearms and you're not allowed
