>> it helps to stay strong remembering his legacy as a hero as a fighter. >> the bay area continues to mourn the loss of 9 vta workers. we'll take you to an emotional vigil in san jose and tell you how one family is remembering. >> we'll hear from the sister of the man responsible for the shooting and why she believes it may have happened. the bay area communities that could see record breaking temperatures this memorial day weekend. thanks so much for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area. >> more than three days since the mass shooting at the vta rail yard and the bay area is still just beginning to process the tragedy. >> the plaza outside san jose city hall has become a memorial to the nine victims of wednesday's tragic shooting. all day we saw people stopping by to pay respects with nine families mourning the loss of loved ones who will never come home again. the bay area is mourning with them as we learn more about the

investigation into the massacre and also more about each of the lives lost. tonight family and friends are gathered at a sikh temple in san jose remembering one of the victims. he leaves behind a wife and two young children. >> nbc bay area is live at the vigil. this man is considered a hero. >> reporter: that's right. he has been remembered in those stories of heroism leading up to the last moments of his life. his family, other families of the victims' families, entire communities mourning for the nine vta victims who lost their lives earlier in the week. an entire community p their own. you can see behind me here the memorial is still taking place for the vta victims outside of the sikh temple here in san

jose. other members of victims families are here as well. his dear friend, a san jose city councilman, is here. they are remembering and speaking about the victims and lives they led. we spoke to his brother before the memorial. he is still very much comforted by the shared stories of heroism of his brother. >> his focus was saving other people. he never called his family between those moments. nobody received a message from him. i was calling him. i know all his friends, his focus from what i'm hearing it was just the people around him. what he can do to save them and

not focus on his own life. >> reporter: he had so much pride for how his brother lived the last moments of his life. the sikh community here also proud in the middle of their grieving for the way he lived the last moments calling his co-workers and warning them to stay away and thinking of those lives that were very close to him. we've got more for you later on in the night coming from this memorial. back to you guys in the studio. >> thanks so much for that report. we are looking forward to it. tonight the gunman's sister is speaking out in an e-mail to the mercury news ann cassidy says something must have happened at work on tuesday to set the gunman off and told the paper, quote, i imagine he spent all night tuesday night pacing and ruminating and making his

plans. that he didn't feel he could call me that night is by far the worst part. she continued, quote, in recent months he has felt lost to me. but now i have to live with the fact that i didn't try harder. yesterday the gunman's father said his son was bipolar and apologized to the families of the victims and also said his son's mental illness is not an excuse for the shooting rampage and he and his wife were blindsided by the tragedy. as people continue to pay respects at a growing city hall memorial people who lived near the gunman say they notice something new in their neighborhood. >> reporter: this woman named sylvia brought flowers and a candle to the memorial at city hall. she is a long time san jose resident. >> i'm a citizen of this community and i care. >> reporter: she did not know the nine vta employees who were killed but was shaken by the tragedy and remains heartbroken for the grieving families.

>> i care and it hurts. it hurts that all these people are suffering. >> reporter: trained chaplains with the billy graham rapid response team are here for people who come by and arrived friday. >> we are there to listen to them and based upon what they share with us we are able to respond back. we want to provide the emotional care and the spiritual care as well. >> reporter: the vta rail yard where the gunman carried out his assault wednesday remains taped off and there were little signs of activity today. a few miles south the home where the shooter lived is still boarded up with debris in the front yard. investigators found multiple cans of gasoline inside, suspected molotov cocktails, and more than 20,000 rounds of various ammunition. today it was quiet except for a delivery driver in a fedex truck leaving a package there. it is the first day since law enforcement left the scene. neighbors say people are driving

by to see it. >> you never know who lives next to you. >> reporter: jackie robles said the gunman seemed particular when people parked outside his home. she did not know him but lived on the block. >> a lot of people -- >> reporter: nbc bay area news. with the flags outside of greenfield city hall flying at half staff today in honor of timothy romo, greenfield is about 30 minutes south of salinas where this man was from. he was killed in the shooting. romo was 59 years old and is survived by his wife and three children as well as grandchildren, two brothers, and his parents. his father mike romo is the police chief and former mayor of the small city. the mass shooting affecting so many people not just in the bay area but other parts of the state as well. chalk boards are going up throughout sacramento. people are encouraged to write messages of love and support for people affected by the vta shooting. organizers help the well wishes will provide some closure and

relief to the victims' families and encourage californians to come together. >> they have the genuine desire to help the community even though they are not part of the same community. >> a group called social expressions organized the project. a somber moment in san jose. the tech interactive reopened for the first time since the pandemic started and used the opportunity to honor the lives lost in the shooting. the reopening ceremony started with a moment of silence for the vta shooting victims. after paying their respects dozens of families filed through the front door. you can learn more about the nine killed in the shooting by going to our website and we've posted ways to donate to the families and the latest on the investigations. turning to our micro climate weather coverage a live look outside. that is walnut creek. you may not believe this but it is going to heat up a lot over the next 48 hours or so.

triple digit temperatures heading to parts of the bay area. tonight the state power leaders say don't worry. there is enough energy supply we should not see any power outages even with demand expected to spike as people run their ac and their fans. let's bring in our meteorologist. how hot is it going to be and how long is it going to last? >> the good news is this heat event won't last particularly long you about temperatures will climb quickly between now and monday. right now outside a good case of ocean air conditioning with the same temperature in san francisco as out toward livermore with strong winds throughout the day along the coast into san francisco and still blowing from 20 to 30 miles per hour into contra costa and solano counties. as the seabreeze backs off look at the 90s showing up inland. at this hour 54 degrees in livermore. tomorrow should see temperatures climbing to the low 90s in the tri valley. santa rosa up to 97 degrees tomorrow and finally warmer

temperatures bay side 70s and 80s. from there memorial day monday trends hotter out toward solano county and contra costa county with temperatures approaching 100 degrees, 80s and 90s. bayside something we have to watch for fire danger brought down a little bit to the low clouds in the marine air today. look at the conditions by monday. things drying out across the north and east bay valleys. exceptional drought this week. those same areas under the head advisory for memorial day monday you can see all across the north bay interior east bay. we'll take a closer loork at those temperatures location by location for your holiday plans on monday and also when the cooler weather makes a comeback in the seven day forecast. >> rob keeps us updated about the heat. his twitter page is a great resource. >> we have a live look at sfo where more people are traveling than any time since before the pandemic. tsa says nationally 1.9 million

people were screened at airport security yesterday. again, the busiest day since the pandemic began. it comes as more and more americans are vaccinated and ready to travel once again. the bay area is celebrating memorial day in a much more upbeat way than last year all thanks to vaccinations increasing and low infection rates. nbc bay area is live at the embarcadero in san francisco tonight. lots of visitors seem to be more at ease. >> reporter: yeah, we've been watching people walking up and down the embarcadero pretty much the way they used to prepandemic. we are seeing that people are still wearing their masks. but there is no doubt that visitors are feeling a little more adventurous this weekend. the traffic on the golden gate bridge was solid especially for those headed to vista point to snap their pictures of the bridge and the city in the distance. most counties in the state are in the orange or yellow restriction tiers and are the least restrictive.

those improving conditions fueled largely by people getting vaccinated has prompted lots of visitors to hit the road this weekend. >> this is our first time in san francisco. we just literally got here driving. we came to the bridge first before we looked for a hotel. we don't even know where we're going to stay. we just got in the car and said we're going. >> the most important thing is we are vaccinated now so we feel free and we are here. >> reporter: that feeling of safety seems to be the same across much of the country as no you just a little more than half of the population has received at least one dose. americans are venturing out to enjoy beaches, outdoors, amusement parks in large numbers for the first time in more than a year. according to triple-a at least 34 million americans will hit the road. airports are expected to break post pandemic travel records with more than 2 million flyers passing through check points already. when they do get to the destinations, they should expect a few major changes that'll require some preplanning.

bracing for big changes. nowhere will the change be more drastic than solano county. it is the only bay area county still in the red tier. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez checked in with two health officers in counties with two very different situations. >> reporter: molly is counting the days until solano county can say good-bye to the red tier and businesses can open at full capacity. >> this restaurant has never been opened at a hundred percent. we are anticipating that a lot of folks will be coming out just eager to come out and enjoy dining again. >> tou opened her restaurant during the pandemic and is anxious to moveon the state lif restrictions on june 15th. >> i'm kind of choosing not to look back at all the ups and downs this past year has brought. >> we are at a point now where as a community we are as close

to as good as we'll get. >> reporter: solano county's health officer says reopening fully is the right thing to do though this remains the only bay area county stuck in the red tier he says nearly everyone who wanted to get vaccinated has had a chance to, about 60% of those eligible. he says the shutdown may have done more harm than good >> i think it is time to reopen in the sense i am not really convinced it was ever necessary to close. the impact on businesses has been very real. many people in our community have lost their jobs, would have lost their homes had it not been for eviction moratoriums. >> reporter: in nearby marin county where nearly 75% of the entire population is expected to be vaccinated by june 15th the health officer says he still worries. that county is leading the way in vaccination rates, but dr. matt willis is urging the community to continue to be cautious. >> it will be up to every

business what they choose to do and i think many will choose to continue to practice facial coverings for vaccinated and unvaccinated people indoors as a matter of safety. >> reporter: molly tou hasn't decided whether she'll continue to require her staff to mask up but will allow customers to choose. some told us they can't wait to leave the masks behind. >> i am ready to party. i'm ready. >> reporter: in solano county, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. vietnam has discovered a new covid variant that spreads more easily than other versions. the health minister says it is a hybrid of strains first found in india and the united kingdom. early in the pandemic vietnam was a stand out success in battling covid but in the past few weeks the country has seen more than 3500 new cases. health experts say the new variant could be to blame. vietnam has banned all religious events. authorities have banned large gatherings in closed public

parks and nonessential businesses in major cities. while cases remain low more signs of norms normalcy talking about costco's free samples. at long last costco is bringing back free samples that customers including my husband have been longing for throughout the pandemic. slowly but surely the store will kick off a phased return in early june. that's next week. employees will prepare the samples behind plexiglas, make them in smaller batches, hand them out one at a time to avoid loud crowds. the company put the kibosh on the freebies in march of 2020. a very covid carnival in san francisco this weekend celebrating carnaval over two days this year. usually it goes on for a week. the theme is our existence is resistance and the weekend is part vaccination clinic part community resource fair and, yes, even got in some

celebration. the pandemic hit the community especially hard. the celebration continues tomorrow in three locations in the mission district. a memorable commencement speech by an unforgettable high school graduate who spoke to fellow graduates at oakland technical high school today, the first black male to be valedictorian in oakland tech history. his commencement speech highlighted what his class has been through and the road ahead. >> yes we're the class of n-95 masks and the class of black lives matter and yes we are the class that had the obnoxious tiktok dancing and also the class that inaugurated the first woman vice president. >> we here at nbc bay area say the class of 2021 is one of resilience, strength, hope. congratulations to you all. let's check in with rob

mayada. tomorrow warmer and monday flat out hot. >> abrupt shift to winter-like chilly cold conditions on the coast and then a big warmup heading our way. right now san francisco not all that surprising. all day seabreeze with temperatures in the low 50s. misty skies and some of the low clouds. similar conditions at times heading up toward tiburon at 57 degrees. south wind 17 miles per hour. what is unique is what is happening in the tri valley, only 54 degrees. west wind at 17 miles per hour. i know it's hard to believe considering it is only 54 right now. we'll be looking at low 90s out toward the tri valley tomorrow as the seabreeze really backs off some tomorrow and more so heading into monday and more 50s there in san jose. northwest wind at 16 at 57 degrees. air quality tomorrow moderate around the bay area. we'll have to watch for the monday update to see if levels around the inland east bay are high enough for a spare the air alert. so far nothing issued for monday but we'll watch it closely this time tomorrow night. the day begins tomorrow similar

to today. areas of low clouds. drizzle. notice what changed here. during the day tomorrow in the future cast less clouds on the coast. clearing for the inland locations. this sets the stage for a warmer afternoon on sunday despite the fact the morning starts off cool with 40s and 50s. notice the high temperatures tomorrow. most places jumping. 15 to 20 degrees from the highs we saw today. still 80s around san jose. we'll find 90s south of downtown. inland east bay, tri valley, livermore climbing into the low to mid 90s. tomorrow out toward contra costa county. 60s around half moon bay. 70s around the peninsula. downtown san francisco climbing into the low 70s for sunday. here is the hottest place in the bay area tomorrow likely to be around santa rosa up to 98 degrees. things are heating up. the heat adviser for the north bay and east bay valleys. for monday here is a look at t

and red on your tv set right now. out toward solano county in the tri valley the hottest locations areas above 100 degrees may be closing in on some records and inland locations but notice the bay side temperatures also into the 80s and 90s. that is for memorial day on monday. fast forward into tuesday. less red on the screen as the seabreeze starts to pick back up. we'll get some cooling for most bay side locations on tuesday. inland areas probably waiting until about wednesday before the temperatures inland cool down to the 80s. the system passing by to the north will trigger the stronger seabreeze. it leads to mid week cooling. then as we head toward the weekend could see another rise in temperatures. san francisco hottest day coming up for monday where we'll feel pretty hot near downtown with the 80s possible for memorial day monday. valleys really heating up. taste of summer as we finish off the memorial day weekend there. monday cooling as we head toward the middle part of the week. we might see more 90s on the way as we head toward next weekend. we'll take a closer look at the

twin peeks has been busy in anticipation of pride month. today volunteers worked to outline the huge triangle to be lit up on june 1st. thousands of lights installed. wednesday, thursday, and friday. the lighting ceremony is set for the coming tuesday night. all lit up for the entire month in honor of pride celebrations. san francisco's presidio is breaking a very long tradition this memorial day. for the second year in a row. this is video for memorial day commemorations in 2019. that is the last time the

presidio held its special services in honor of veterans on memorial day. it's been tradition at the presidio since 1868. leaders called it off again this year because of covid-19 concerns. hundreds of people in san diego spent their morning placing flags at fort rosekranz national cemetery in honor of tens of thousands of veterans who died while serving in the u.s. military. last memorial day the public was not allowed at the cemetery because of coronavirus. today many brought children or other family members to pay tribute. some, like jenny riddle, come from military families. >> it is a very emotional feeling to be honest. i feel as i mentioned a deep amount of respect for these individuals and so in many cases i feel like i can feel their spirits and appreciation for our time and effort. this is a very minimal amount of time out of my day and yet it

right now families of the victims are gathering tonight to show support after the week's tragic shooting at the vta rail yard. thanks for joining us in this special edition of nbc bay area news. >> an emotional memorial in san jose tonight with people gathered at a sikh temple in honor of 36-year-old taptejdeep singh. he leaves behind a wife and two young children. his family says he was trying to warn colleagues there was a shooter when he himself was gunned down. at city hall today people were visiting a growing memorial all day. a place for the community to grieve together and show support for the victims' families. trained chaplains were there to support people visiting the memorial. >> we are there to listen to

emeryville. they're not really getting anywhere close to the limit. bumper-to-bumper. weekend travel comes as the u.s. hits another milestone on the pandemic. good news for the first time in a year many experts do not expect a major surge in covid cases after a long holiday weekend. nbc's chris pollone explains why. >> reporter: the unofficial start to summer. soggy and cold on the eastern seaboard u windy and wet in texas. less than ideal conditions for some of the 37 million americans projected to travel this holiday weekend. the nation's airports are as busy as more than a year. >> traffic is ridiculous. bumper-to-bumper. >> reporter: since the start of the pandemic the nation's health experts feared covid spikes following holidays. not so this weekend >> i think it is very unlikely.

>> reporter: about 51% of the nation's adults are fully vaccinated and millions more have recovered from the virus. >> when you look at the total picture around 70% of the population has some form of immunity either through vaccination or prior exposure to the virus. >> reporter: in sunny miami beach city leaders are trying to keep the momentum going. >> i'm hoping we'll find people that want to take the time to get the vaccine. >> reporter: giving shots to beach goers right on the sand >> i actually had johnson & johnson's shot. it was awesome. took like two minutes. >> reporter: with the nation still short of the biden administration's july 4th goal 70% of all adults having at least one vaccine shot cities and states continue trying to find the hard to reach and vaccine resistant. chris pollone, nbc news. part of the reason health experts are so optimistic is so many people are vaccinated. this is the percentage of people fully vaccinated county by county. most counties are in light green

meaning more than 60% fully vaccinated. marin has the most with 73% of the population fully vaccinated. sonoma and napa in dark green. sonoma county 59%. solano county a little behind but not bad compared to the national stage. 49% fully vaccinated. a two-alarm fire in oakland this afternoon. you can see it in this video. this was posted on the citizen app. there is a lot of dark smoke there. this is the sunshine biscuit company building on 81st avenue in oakland. it used to be a cookie factory but now has at least 40 residential units. firefighters say the flames started on an outdoor deck on the fourth floor and then spread. no one was hurt but several people are now displaced. new tonight cal fire has announced it will keep an additional firefighting helicopter at the airport. the large chopper is holding up to 2800 gallons of water.

local cal fire leaders are calling the extra helicopter instrumental to its goal of keeping wildfires to ten acres or less. also being called in to help this fire season food trucks from off the grid to feed first responders and fire victims. the company is now partnering with the state and red cross to recruit bay area food trucks and restaurants as food responders. a short time ago i spoke with kim alter, the chef and owner of night bird in san francisco hayes valley. kim, thanks for joining us. i understand your restaurant, one of the first in san francisco to sign up for the food responders program. why did you decide to do that? >> it's super important. through the pandemic we at night bird, instead of opening up and doing what we have in the past which is a menu that didn't translate to deliveries so we've jumped in and have been cooking for unhoused folks and seniors and did victims from the fire

and i think now we've done over 120,000 meals for people in need in the last year. it feels like we need to continue though we'll be opening in the next few weeks. >> you're not a food truck. >> no. >> are you going to move during a temporary kitchen during fire season? >> no. we'll just do it out of night bird and we are going to figure out a way to let it run while we're doing our normal service. i hope we don't have to. i hope the fire season doesn't happen this year. we just want to be prepared and they want to be prepared so we'll cook everything out of night bird. >> let's say there is something going on up in the north bay. who calls you. >> what do you do then? you've got regular customers to deal with. how does it work? >> so what we did last year it

was kind of on the fly. wan few hours people were getting evacuated and brought into san francisco into hotels and would just call and be like could you do 13 dinners for this place and, you know, 20 dinners for this place and deliver them? and we did. we just kind of looked through what we had and hopefully always kept stuff on supply to be able to cook for he folks who needed it and then delivered them. >> you cook it on site and deliver it. these are people brought to san francisco. >> yes. >> you are not trying to deliver something up to napa or lake county or something like that. >> not on -- we talked about that in the past but they block off and evacuate folks so bring people they couldn't house in napa and sonoma to san francisco and we were able to cook for them. >> very good. are you encouraging some of your fellow restaurants to get involved in the program? something really good for the community. >> yeah, a hundred percent. i know there are about seven

other great restaurants who are doing the program as well. and i think the first thing, restaurants are always the first in line to help when there is a need or charity and i don't think anyone would say no to this because it is so devastating when fires happen. i'm telling everyone we should jump in and help when it happens. >> i'm glad you didn't say no. thank you very much for talking to us. >> thank you so much. it's been a pleasure. nine months after devastating fire damage, part of big basin redwood state park is back open. the fire tore through the area last year burning 97% of the park. today the most popular part of the park reopened to visitors and more will open as experts assess damage but it is expected to be years before the public can enjoy the whole park again. the state has set aside tens of millions of dollars to help. the games will go on. still ahead how organizers are responding to calls to cancel

ship and it aired for almost ten years. time to stop. this holiday weekend the police in the east bay are cracking down on side shows. these photos are posted on facebook last night. the police department and several other agencies have more officers on patrol hoping to prevent what happened last weekend when police responded to side shows in four different stays in eastern contra costa county. last night officers stopped more than 50 cars, issued more than a dozen citations, and towed some of those cars. they also recovered two guns and made one arrest. police hope this will show they are serious about cracking down. memorial day weekend fun gone wrong. a rescue at six flags, texas where people were stuck on a rollercoaster. the name of the rollercoaster was the poltergeist which could have tipped you off. you can't expect much from a ride called poltergeist. it stopped right in the middle of the ride. crews helped 20 people get seated securely upright.

nine other areas. unlike in years past when fans poured in from around the world foreign spectators have been banned and the head of the olympic organizing committee is hinting japanese fans might not be allowed either. a final decision is expected next month and could mean athletes competing in empty stadiums with no cheering crowds. still, olympic officials insist the games will go on that testing, masks, temperature checks will be in place and no singing or chanting allowed. even without spectators some 90,000 people including athletes and their delegations are expected in tokyo in july. with less than 3% of japan's population fully vaccinated there is growing public concern about welcoming in delegations from around the world. this man says he is worried about new covid variants being brought in from overseas. polls show 60% to 80% of japanese want the games to be called off. this morning organizers face an

most of us do pine, oak, olive, cedar, tree pollen still moderate. grass pollen moderate at times around the bay area. the wind is not helping. the winds are all the way into contra costa county and solano county and the same areas tomorrow will see about a 25-degree jump in temperatures. the morning starts off with patchy, low clouds inland. what'll change tomorrow is they'll start to clear more quickly and even on the coast clearing skies setting the stage for a warmup for your sunday. 50s for the most part to start off the morning. now check out the high temperatures tomorrow through the santa clara valley into the 80s as you head south through the coyote valley down into morgan hill, gilroy. numbers closer to 90 degrees. tri valley up toward walnut creek, alamo, concord into the 90s. should see some 80s bay side from oakland into hayward down into fremont. peninsula temperatures, not an ocean air conditioning wind chill event for you tomorrow. for a change we got some 70s and 80s bay side even on the coast upper 60s closer to half moon bay and downtown san francisco.

thinking 70s tomorrow. chance of climbing closer to 80 on monday. the north bay looks to be the hot spot tomorrow with numbers in the mid 90s and even a few upper 90s possible for your sunday afternoon. now check out monday's temperatures. now you're looking at 80s. it may be even near 90s in the south part of the bay into san jose near hundred-degree temperatures inland toward the tri valley. concord, fairfield, out near santa rosa. san francisco, half moon bay not much of a change but inland the temperatures jump up. then as the seabreeze takes hold for tuesday the good news about the heat shouldn't stick around too much. mainly monday into tuesday as the storm system is passing by to the north and triggers more after seabreeze toward another part of the week that should lead to some cooling but no rain. we'll take a look here at the two-week outlook heading into june taking us through the second week of june. above average temperatures likely to continue for the first couple weeks of june. rainfall also near average and what is june average rain fall looking like? it is best to keep your expectations grounded. we're in the dry time of year so

welcome back. i'm anthony flores. the giants lighting up hollywood today. game three of the four-game series at dodger stadium. it's a one-run game in the top of the third. donovan solano smacks a two-run shot then with the orange and black up 7-4 and the bases loaded in the seventh, a double to right. that plates the pair. the giants beat the dodgers 11-6 the most runs they've scored at dodger stadium in eight years. >> i don't know, trying to prove anything, i think we just kind of roll with kind of the underdog team and i think kind of the way we've been playing has proven that. >> in oakland the as and angels with last night's win. tying tony la russo for the most wins as a manager in oakland. the green and gold were dragging a bit this afternoon. top five, ohtani comes through with a two-run single.

two runs scored. 3-0 angels. cobb scattered three hits over seven shutout innings. the final 4-0. nascar returns to the bay area next weekend for the first time since the start of the pandemic. i recently spoke with chase elliott last year's cup series champion to get his thoughts on road racing at sonoma. >> a long ways from home but it's a cool area. and part of the country we don't really see a lot. i guess because it is so far away for everybody. but it's nice to go out there, a cool race track. that area of california is really nice. >> you had a lot of success on road courses. what is it about the driving aspect of being on a road course that challenges you more and elevates your game. >> it is definitely a different kind of driving i guess. you know, a little different approach. sonoma has been a place i feel like we kind of struggled at.
