out in an email to the ""san jose mercury news" ann cassidy something must have happened tuesday before the shooting. "i imagine he spent all night tuesday night pacing and ruminating and making his plans, that he didn't feel he could call me that night is by far the worst part." she continued "in recent months, he has felt lost to me, but now i have to live with the fact that i didn't try harder." the gunman's father james cassidy said his son was bipolar and apologized to the families of the victims and says his son's mental illness is not an excuse for the shooting rampage and he and his wife were blind-sided by the tragedy. one of the shooting victims is honored the greenfield city hall about 30 miles south of salinas where flags are flying at half staff in honor of tim thigh romo, the greenfield native was 59-year-old, survived by his wife and three children

francisco, we just literally got here driving, and we came to the bridge first before we looked for our hotel. we don't even know where we're going to stay. we got in the car, we said we're going. >> just pure joy. the theme of safety seems to be the theme across the country, according to aaa, 34 million americans are hitting the roads and airports, expecting to break post-pandemic travel records with more than 2 million flyers passing through checkpoints yesterday. mel ree day marks the unofficial start of summer, which means boating season. the contra costa county sheriff's office wants to take this opportunity to remind voters to follow the rules and stay safe. anyone 40 or under who operates a boat must have a california boater card. there must be life jackets for every person on the boat and children 13 and younger must keep their life jackets on at

all times while on board. san francisco's presidio is breaking a very longstanding tradition this memorial day for the second year in a row. this is video from memorial day 2019 the last time the precede yo held special services in honor of veterans on memorial day. it's been a tradition since 1868. they called it off again because of covid concerns. coming up, we take you live to washington d.c. for our weekly interview with chuck todd who has a review as opposed to preview of this week's "meet the press," how senate republicans blocked the creation of a commission to investigate the january 6th insurrection. calling on food responders, how one group is partnering with local firefighters ahead of virus season.
7:10 am
7:11 am
welcome back.
7:12 am
it is time for your weekly discussion with chk, moderator of "meet the press." as always, thanks for joining us this morning. we aired "meet the press" right before our newscast today because of the indy 500. >> yes, you did. >> hopefully people got to see it, if not hopefully they dvr'd it and we appreciate your time, to talk to us after your show. so health leaders in the bay area announced two days ago they plan to fully support california's plan to reopen all schools for full-time in-person instruction come this fall. you had a children's vaccination specialist on your show today. is there any indication that more children will be vaccinated by september or what were you able to glean? >> well, actually, we were talking about the origins of covid with him as folks who may be watching this willze that was that segment there. i've talked the good
7:13 am
news is, essentially for sixth grade and higher, there is an anticipation that you're going to have most of those students by the start of the next school year vaccinated. i think the question mark is going to be about the vulnerability of students that are below the age of 12, right, there's no vaccine yet on the market for anybody below the age of 12, so i do think that that's what we're going to learn a little bit this summer and you talked to not just peter otez but some others saying as they learn more about the circulation of the virus among folks under the age of 12, the good news, it appears to be less risk of severe illness or worse, but there's still vulnerabilities there and i think there's still data over the summer that a lot of scientists are going to want before we know for sure how smoothly particularly younger elementary schools are going to
7:14 am
be in the fall. >> yes, and i do dvr "meet the press" each week so it will be interesting to hear about the origins of covid. >> yes. >> i do want to turn our attention to the insurrection. senate republicans a couple days ago blocked the effort to create an independent commission, so is this further sign that republicans are still aligning themselves with donald trump because he said he was against the commission? are they worried about the 2022 midterms or what is it? >> well, they've said that they are. i mean, mitch mcconnell in some ways and many senators are point blank, they think democrats are going to somehow benefit from the commission or exploit the results of this commission, so take that logic to its complete end point. republicans are nervous that any bipartisan commission is going to come to the same conclusion, that donald trump had a role, if
7:15 am
not the role in fomenting this insurrection. the biggest unanswered questions revolve what did the president do before the insurrection, during the insurrection. these are things we don't know the answer to. so i guess that's the most amazing things about this debate is how straightforward republican leaders have been about that their sole reason for not wanting to support this commission is they don't like the potential political outcome. it's kind of brazen, kira. i don't think we fully have appreciated that we're so polarized now that we've decided what is bad politics should trump what may be necessary to bring the country together. i don't mean to polyannish but that's the only thingday, ss as a member of the political party you acknowledge may have members who acted improperly, but there seems to be real fear there and it begins and ends with donald trump. >> and i think unfortunately we
7:16 am
have to let you go, through i wonder, will chuck schumer bring it up again for a vote in the future? >> he said he would. we'll see what happens. >> we'll continue to talk to but that, chuck, we always puerto rico your insight. great to see you. >> kira, thank you. switching gears, still searching for a covid shot, anyone out there? starting today at 10:00 a.m., a pop-up vaccine site will open an the mayfair community center in san jose. anyone aged 12 and older as we just discussed with chuck can come to the clinic to get their shot, no appointment needed, all vaccines are free. and some more signs of normalcy, a costco favorite is making a comeback, talking abou. the stores will k phased return in early june, employee also prepare the samples behind plexiglass, make them in smaller batches and hand them out one at a time to avoid large crowds. the country put the kibosh on
7:17 am
freebies last march. i may have to rejoin costco for the free samples. okay, wear a mask, pay a penalty. a mendocino restaurant is slapping a fee on customers who order while masked. the sign posted at fiddle hens cafe reads "$5 fee added to orders placed while wearing a face mask." the fine print adds that anyone overheard boasting about having a vaccine will get another $5 surcharge. the owner tells us the fee is actually an optional donation and goes to charity but it's causing controversy, several people have spoken out about it and told us about it and sent these photos to us. okay, now to food trucks. they're getting a jumpstart before the fire season. they want to help feed first responders, and fire victims. the company off the grid here in the bay area is partnering with the state and the red cross as food responders, it's something that evolved during last year's
7:18 am
historic fire season. >> it was kind of on the fly, within a few hours, people were getting evacuated, being brought into san francisco and into hotels and they would just call and be like could you do 13 dinners for this place and 20 dinners for this place and deliver them and we did and kind of looked through what we had and hopefully kept some stuff on supply to be able to cook for folks who needed it, and then we would go and deliver them. >> that woman, kim alter, estimates night bird has made more than 120,000 meals for people in need over the past year. and now to people in san diego, hundreds of them placed flags for fallen soldiers at ft. rosecranz national cemetery. tens of thousands of veterans who died serving in the u.s. military were bury there had. last memorial day the public was not allowed because of coronavirus but many brought their children and other family members out yesterday to pay tribute. some of them come from military families. >> it's a very emotional feeling to be honest.
7:19 am
i peel as i mentioned a deep amount of respect for these individuals and so in many cases, i feel like i can feel their spirits and i can feel their appreciation for our time and effort. >> and then tomorrow's memorial service will be virtual. the public can visit grave stones in person, though. and trending this morning, a north bay man is attempting a major feat by kayaking from california to hawaii all by himself, if successful, sir el deremo will be the second person to cross the pacific in a kayak. it starts tomorrow morning, it's expected to take 70 days. we wish him all the best, and we're going to turn to our own superhero, rob mayeda, for a look at your microclimate forecast. somehow you did not gain the covid-19 quarantine 19 i gained,
7:20 am
you're still doing cross-fit in your garage. >> going back to the costco story, i love the costco pizza so much, so i did put on -- >> makes me feel better. >> look outside for the folks that will be heading out around the bay, still got a little bit of patchy low clouds and fog but more sunshine earlier in the morning as the low clouds start to clear for you on this sunday morning. 51 degrees currently in san francisco, hazy skies in walnut creek, still technically a sea breeze but that's going to be going away. the ocean air conditioning is not going to be sticking around for the afternoon, 55 currently in walnut creek. 53 in n livermore, seeing the sunshine there, too, around the tri-valley and a pretty view of san jose, santa clara valley patchy areas of low clouds, 56 for city cameras, low clouds starting to go away, more sunshine on the coast and all signs point to a warmer day, temperature wise, some places 25 degrees of warming compared to yesterday. so you got about upper 80s for

monday. another thing we will avery to watch, fire danger, dry hills by tomorrow afternoon, could see humidity numbers below 20% as that late day sea breeze tries to make a comeback during the day tomorrow, these wind speeds will be picking up leading to a cooler tuesday forecast. so there you go, temperatures by tuesday back into the upper 80s and low 90s, as a sea breeze starts to cool things off. hot summer-like high pressure gives up some ground for the middle part of the week, to see some showers for areas north maybe mendocino county, has a slight chance of seeing a few showers as we head towards the first weekend in june, high pressure builds back and we'll see a warming trend again. a real taste of summer here, around the bay area, san francisco at least 70s next two to three days, trending cooler for the second half of the week and our valleys upper 90s to some 100s inland, heat advisory for your memorial day monday and trending cooler midweek but moving towards june, kira, those

dropped back into the upper 80s and low 90s. still plenty hot, not as hot as the temperatures will see for memorial day. the trigger of the cooling is a stronger sea breeze set up wednesday into thursday as the system brings showers close to us but not quite heading to parts of northern california and temperatures rise as we head into the first weekend of june, so a very summer-like forecast around the bay area, san francisco has a chance of getting closer to 80, to wrap up the weekend for memorial day, numbers quite hot inland. morning temperatures are fine. it's a hot outdoors the next couple of days and breezy and cooler. could see 90s as we head toward next weekend. key camera, back to you. >> you know if it's 80 in san francisco, it is toasty everywhere else. rob, thanks so much. some of that forecast was beautiful. not so sure about the rest. 7:44 right now. and we do have much more ahead on "today in the bay," including nbc bay area political analyst

shootings, kira, that's almost two a day in this country. the good news is, is that this year, the trends suggest that we're maybe going to have around 550, if that's good news, i guess, but the other interesting piece i think of really good news is that although california has 12.5% of the nation's population, this year it has only 7.7% of mass shootings. of course, any mass shooting number is too much, but clearly, this state is not as bad of a state, if you will, when it comes to mass shootings as most others. >> why is that? why is california relatively low in comparison? >> yes, the interesting thing is, we are be a state with the strictest gun control laws in the nation. california sets the gold standard for gun control, with respect to background checks, types of weapons weigh low in
7:50 am
this state, the opportunities to make sure that the wrong weapons don't come in or are not purchased in state. that's the big thing. the problem is states around us, for example, nevada, arizona, just to mention a couple, they're not strict gun control states so it's all too easy for somebody to bring a gun or assault weapon if you will into the state just crossing state lines. so yes, we are the number one state but it doesn't make it easier because of the easiness in transporting weapons. >> without getting too political, try as i might, what about a national requirement for background checks, would that help? >> 21 states like california have background checks. the fbi estimates because of the 21 states and background checks, 3.5 million people were denied
7:51 am
the opportunity to purchase guns, because these people were fell yonls, or people with mental issues, things you find in a universal background check. multiply that nationally and the likelihood millions of people checked on and because of that perhaps not allowed. the interesting thing is that 84% of the nation supports universal background checks. seems okay, it's easy enough to do, no brainer. the house passed earlier this year, happened before, waiting for the senate. is going to get around to it this year, much like the last number of years, and so the time being this troubled issue for so many of us is likely to continue. >> it is just really depressing to talk about this so many

unite in their grief. singh's brother, karman says he is proud of his brother lived out his last moments. >> reporter: did you hear from your brother in the last moments? >> i wish i did. but his focus was saving other people. he never called his family between those moments. nobody received a message from him. >> reporter: many leaders of that temple are calling on local politicians to make substantial changes to prevent further tragedies. there will be a vigil for all nine vta victims tonight at 5:00 at charles f. kennedy park in union city, that is the hometown of taptejdeep singh. learn more about all nine of those men, all of those innocent victims on our website nbcbayarea.com, we also have information on how to donate to their families. it's again nbcbayarea.com/vtayardshooting. before we go, one last look at the forecast on this memorial
