and thank you famiies for your sacrifice as well. we get to meteorologist vianey arana who is looking at a forecast that's very hot this morning. >> it is hot and quick to warm. it's 5:00 a.m. and 59 degrees in walnut creek so this gives you an idea. wind speeds are calm, overall noticing the icons, a lot of sunshine. by 9:00 a.m. we'll be in the 70s. by 11:00 a.m. bumping into the upper 80s, not as hot as we get. we expect to get triple digits hotter. san jose topping out in the 90s today. 58 degrees right now but in through the interior valleys we talk about near record heat in the triple digits for the valleys. so anywhere from 98 plus to 101, 103, maybe even hotter. i'll talk in more cierra? >> sounds good. enjoy that cooler weather while you can, as soon as the sun comes up, the temperature and that heat advisory is about to go into effect for most of

"today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from dublin. bob, this is another reminder of that fire danger we face. >> you are correct, cierra. we're already in a drought of the hills behind me here in the tri-valley, which the sun comes up you'll remember they are very brown and the fuels are a level of dryness that we normally see in august, not now in may. this wildfire danger will increase as parts of the bay area as vianey were saying are expected to hit triple digits later today. the national weather service issued a heat advisory from noon until 9:00 tonight for the north bay mountains and valleys, the east bay interior valleys, diab because of the temps forecast in the high 90s to 101 degrees. there is this fire 680 yesterday afternoon firefighters knocked down before it spread into a major wildfire.

they had to be prepared because of the wildfire season over the last several years. one man lived in walnut creek the contra costa county fire protection district designated a "high fire hazard area" because of vegetation can easily explode into uncontrollable wind-swept flames. >> it's in your minds because we dealt with it heavily the last few years. thankfully it seems we're safe. as we drove into lafayette i thought is that smoke i smell? it was just a barbecue. it was on her minds. >> be aware of the vegetation in the county is dry. if you are out out in it, be cautious. >> reporter: the fire department warning us to avoid heat exhaustion or stroke especially if you're a memorial day barbecue and outside. stay cool and hydrated and be aware if you feel faint or sweat excessively. reporting live in dublin, bob redell, "today in the bay." we are tracking a fire in monterey county, not what we want to hear.

firefighters batting the so-called sergeant's fire which burned 250 acres. at last check it was just 10% contained. this is burning north east of bradley, which is just north of paso robles in southern monterey county. we'll keep you updated as we get more information. turning to the memorial day weekend and america is bouncing back, that was evident over the holiday weekend with beaches packed and businesses booming, travel experts say this could be the busiest travel day in more than a year. nbcbayarea.com/vtayardshootings. as the grieving continues in san jose, people in florida are also now in mourning for a different reason. two people were killed and more than 20 people were injured in an early sunday morning shooting outside a northwest miami-dade banquet hall in florida. miami-dade police believe this was a targeted attack, saying that three people got out of an suv and began shooting into a crowd. the mother of one of the victims said one of her sons was there for an album release for an up-and-coming rap artist. >> he called it frantic, telling us he had been shot and hurts. i want him to know stay with us. >> the suspects fled after the shooting. investigators are working to find them. there have been more than 230 mass shootings in the united states since the start of 2021. turning now to the pandemic, and the progress we are making, more than half of the total u.s. population has gotten at least one dose of covid-19 vaccines

according to cdc data. in california 17 million people are fully vaccinated. the state has given out more than 38 million doses. and employers across santa clara county face a deadline of tomorrow to comply with the new requirement to obtain records of the covid status of their workforce. the county issued the rule about two weeks ago, immediately raised questions about privacy and enforcement, but come tomorrow if a company does not have the records on file, it can face fines of $5,000 each day. the county stresses the mandate is not a requirement for anyone to get vaccinated and it does not require businesses to disclose the information of other people or agencies. also, workers can choose not to answer. turning back to our forecast, a live look outsidealr but we know that there is fire danger looming, now we also kno

francisco so the old record was set back in 2001 at 90 degrees. we top out in upper 70s. san jose inching near the 101 mark at 94 degrees. how much longer is this heat going to last? the concern headed into tonight and tuesday because of this high pressure is going to be the uptick in the winds for tomorrow. that's always an area for concern. we get the three factors roll in, the humidity, the heat and the wind, that raises fire concern danger. we're in serious drought. tuesday 90s in the forecast into wednesday and thursday, we get some relief from the heat especially for inland areas and hopefully we see the diminishing winds help out. san francisco windy conditions. it will feel like summer. 70s in the forecast and we start to dip back down into the 60s. let's get a look at traffic conditions. we have a wide picture here and i did check on that accident down in the south bay in san jose, looks like it's a fender bender along 280 but that has moved over to the right-hand shoulder so no serious delays

texas democrats staged a dramatic walk-out to block a restrictive voting bill this prevented a vote from being held on texas senate bill 7 also known as the election integrity protection act. the fight is far from over. some of those proposed changes end drive-through and 24-hour voting, adds proof of identity requirements for absentee voting and makes it easier for a judge to overturn election results even without proof that fraud affected the outcome. members of the texas naacp say the bill would have disproportionately affected people of color. >> what is at stake is there an attempt to make this into an apartheid state to make sure that a small minority of conservative extreme white citizens can dominate our government. >> the bill passed the senate early yesterday morning and came up in the state house for final approval. texas governor greg abbott

announced he would order lawmakers back to the capitol for a special session but it's unclear when that will happen. memorial day weekend is under way and we see a huge uptick in travelers compared to last year. for those hitting the roads you're probably seeing sticker shock when it comes to gas prices. "today in the bay" pete joins us with live details. what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning to you, cierra. sticker shock when it comes to high gas prices. what we see across the country and especially right here in the bay area but it's not stopping people from traveling this memorial day weekend. let's look at projected numbered by aaa. they expect more than 37 million people to travel this holiday weekend, a 60% increase from last year when of course we were still in the midst of the pandemic. more than 2.5 million people are expected to travel by air but a big chunk of the 37 million, roughly 35 million will be traveling on the road and that's

where they see those high gas prices as we mentioned, the national lounge is around $3 a gallon but in san francisco, oakland and san jose roughly around four bucks a gallon. travel numbers represent an increase from 2020 of course but still 13% fewer travelers than 2019. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> all right, we were just talking about that in the newsroom, those really high prices, thanks, pete. okay, it is 5:37 now and we want to take a live look at arlington national cemetery, where the sun is up and where president joe biden is set to visit this memorial day. he will participate in the traditional wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier. this is mr. biden laying a wreath in new castle, delaware, last memorial day. the first lady vice president kamala harris and the second gentleman will accompany president biden to virginia to are this year's ceremony. the president is also set to deliver remarks on the national memorial day of service.

lots of memorial day event are planned for around the bay area today, many were canceled because of the pandemic. today people will gather at 10:00 a.m. in walnut creek for the city's annual memorial day commemoration which happens at civic park near the gazebo. at 11:00 a.m. the "uss hornet" wreath toss, one of several events on board the aircraft carrier. maybe you noticed or heard memorial day week in fly-overs conducted yesterday in skies above the bay area. here are photos from the 20 planes that make up the memorial squad ron usa. pilots took part in flyovers across the bay area and sacramento including above the "uss hornet" in alame da. veteransrsan enjoy some of california's state parks.

some locations are angel island, half moon bay, mt. diablo and tamales bay. to get in free you just have to show your valid military i.d. or proof of honorable discharge. 134 of the state's 280 state parks are participating in this program this memorial day. nice perk. the climate in crisis also hitting home in the bay area, that includes fulsome lake in the sierra nevada foothills, heading to the east of us. water levels are surprising visitors over the holiday weekend. the lake's surface is sitting at 70 feet below where it normally is during an average year of wet weather. it's usually about 460 feet deep and means boat launch ramps in all but one area are now closed. that is tough to see. >> it is tough. we turn our attention to a live look downtown at san jose

"today in the bay's" vianey arana is tracking what we can expect today. >> because of the heat and also of course the fire danger concerns any time that we see temperatures above the triple digits, right now we've got decent humidity so we're doing okay when it comes to that. that elevates the heat, so about 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. when the advisory is in effect. 90s and triple digits for the 8 of 90s possible. records compared to today's highs. santa rosa expected to beat an old record in 2001 of 100 degrees. 103 for concord, 105 was set in 2001 and look at san francisco, so san francisco gets warm above normal but the old record high

was 90 so even though it's not nearing the record it's hot out there. oaklandle 7 degrees, old record was 90 and san jose staying in the upper 90s. we're also monitoring the wind concerns because right now wind speeds are calm but as we head towards this afternoon we are expecting to see the winds begin to pick up into tuesday as well. once the winds pick up what happens is this high humidity we get with the nice recovery overnight starts to dry us out. when we see humidity fall below the 0% park pair that up with dry conditions that increases our concern when it comes to the fire dang sore i'm going to be reviewing that and the time line over the next seven days of what you can expect but for now look at traffic. this looks good. green on the traffic map means there is no slowdowns, chp tracker reports any fender benders cleared out out of the south bay. one along 880 cleared out nicely. let's look at your bridge drive times, smooth commute westbound 580 toward the richmond bridge seven minutes, westbound 92

percy priest lake near nashville site. a controversial figure she appeared on national television programs touting her best selling book "way down diet." the ntsb is working with local rescue officials hoping for answers about what led to this tragic crash. a follow-up now new video of an attack on a san francisco police officer we have to tell you you might want to look away. the video is hard to watch. the sf police officer's association posted this video on twitter, sf pd says friday night an asian female officer confronted that man after he was making threats toward other people. you can see he then attacks her, bystanders jump in to help until backup arrived. all this happened just before 7:00 on friday night at the intersection of kearny and commercial, right near portsmouth square. the officer was taken to the hospital and we're told her injuries were not life-threatening.

105 and hayward upper 80s in the forecast. expect to see sort of above normal temps for the peninsula as well. san mateo 85 degrees and as cierra mentioned, visiting from out of town we'll be in the upper 70s and 80s but breezy. we have the southwest winds at 17 miles per hour, you need a light coat. usually you need a heavier coat, not tonight. north bay temperatures at 103 for ukiah, sonoma 98, novato 100 degrees. here is where it gets tricky. good humidity now but look at the temperature trend and the winds because this is a time stand right here. 2:00 the wind speed they pick up, getting breezier, 15, 20 miles per hour but into the afternoon we really start to see the winds pick up near the san francisco area san mateo through san jose, fremont, livermore, 20 plus-mile-per-hour winds. when the wind starts to kick up

we see a decrease in the humidity so even though right now we're above the 50s through 10:00 a.m. we remain good except fairfield, concord and this is where we start looking at the fire danger index. notice the time stamp, monday, 3:00 p.m., look what happens in fairfield, concord, livermore, we fall below the 20% and normally you see a decent amount of humidity above the 30% mark. once that starts to drop, pair that up with the heat and that brings a concern for fire danger. so long range outlook we have the high pressure, it's been keeping us hot since the weekend and going to stick around and linger through monday and tuesday and by the middle of the week, wednesday, thursday, we get some cooling in the middle of the week, the valleys cool down by as much as 20 plus degrees, back down into the 80s around the coastline we get a little cooler as well and for the first weekend of june, warming is going to make its return thanks to high pressure yet again. we see the return of that heat in the bay area, so let's look at the seven-day forecast for
