lost their lives defending our country. a live look at arlington national cemetery often the site for ceremoies on this day. thank you for anyone who served and family members there to support them. we get a look at your forecast because you're going to want to know about it if you are headed outdoors today. it is going to be hot and downright dangerous. >> it really is. any time we inch into the triple digits especially with how quickly it warms up throughout the afternoon it's something to take note of and keep in mind. 57 degrees in livermore, notice by around 11:00 a.m. about 84 degrees and by 1:00 p.m. 90s but that's not as hot as it's going to get. it gets hotter through the afternoon. look at the temperature trend into the afternoon, in the upper 80s, a couple of triple digits. this will inch us near record high temps for the interior valleys, high heat advisory into effect at 11:00 a.m.

cierra? enjoy the cooler weather today while you can, as soon as the sun comes up, some temperatures and a heat advisory is about to go into effect for much of the bay area. "today in the bay's" bob redell joins us live from dublin. bob, this is another reminder of the fire danger we face. >> reporter: and something we'll notice today as we see the sun rise over here in dublin over the hills in the tri-valley, yes, don't forget we are in a drought, the hills are brown, it's hard to see with the back lighting but the hills are brown and the grass, the fuels are extremely dry, levels of dryness we normally see in august, not may. this wildfire danger increases as parts of the bay area are expected to hit triple digits later today as vianey mentioned. the national weather. to 8:00 t the north bay mountains and dia

because temperatures are forecast to be in the high 90s up to 105 in places. there was this fire yesterday afternoon along 680 which fortunately firefighters knocked down before it spread into a major wildfire. we spoke with one man who lives in a part of walnut creek that the fire department designated "high fire hazard area" because of vegetation there, it can easily explode into uncontrollable wind-swept flames. >> it's in your minds because we've dealt with it so heavily the last few years but thankfully, so far it seems like we're safe, but you know as we drove into lafayette today i thought, is that smoke i smell? it was just a barbecue but it's on our minds. >> also the vegetation is very high. >> reporter: be aware of the

threat of heat exhaustion and stroke is real. we'll be in the heat advisory from 11:00 this morning to 8:00 tonight, some places seeing temps over 100 degrees. bob redell, "today in the bay." we are tracking a fire in monterey county. firefighters battling the so-called sergeant's fire which burned 250 acres. at last check it was just 10% contained. this is burning northeast of bradley, which is just north of paso robles in southern monterey county. we'll keep you updated as we get more information. get the nbc bay area app to track forecast and teach tours in your area. it's free for iphones and android devices. turning to the memorial day with holiday travel over the weekend, with beaches

packed and businesses booming, travel experts say this could be the busiest travel day in more than a year. >> "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington, d.c., with a look at how america is looking past the pandemic. good morning. >> hi, cierra and kris, good morning. america looking past the pandemic, we're still there but people are thinking past that. we saw it with the crowds over the weekend and those same crowds we may see in airports today. despite a washout in the northeast, beaches across america were packed this weekend. >> everybody is so excited to be out. >> reporter: myrtle beach brought in extra police to handle crowds. hotels were predicted to be 80% full. >> i love it. i'm so glad we're almost back to normal. >> holding up all four, helio castroneves. >> reporter: in indianapolis the largest gathering in over a year, the indy 500 with 135,000 people and covid vaccines on site.

in washington, thousands of motorcycles roared through the nation's capital, rolling thunder is back. >> feels good. >> reporter: crowds packed national parks and movie theaters as president biden reminded the country why we commemorate memorial day. >> we only have one truly sacred obligation, and that's to equip those we send into harm's way with all they need. >> reporter: flags at arlington and other veteran cemeteries honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. >> we remember you and we want to celebrate you and we want to thank you more importantly. >> reporter: today, 5 million passengers who pass through airport security since thursday head home, officials say it could be the busiest travel day in over a year. tracie potts, nbc news. a live look in los angeles where people are among those helping to set new travel highs

this year. last friday lax had nearly 80,000 people pass through airport security and a peak that adds to the may average for lax already above 60,000. it is only half the volume compared to the same period during 2019, the year before any of us heard of covid-19. we have some of the bay area events honoring military members who made the sacrifice. marin county veterans online memorial day ceremony a wreath laying livestreamed from veterans memorial auditorium getting started at 10:00 this morning and los gatos memorial park will hold a ceremony an event that gets under way at 10:30 this morning. watch the "today" show at 7:00 this morning, right after "today in the bay" for a look at memorial day remembrances happening today in the nation's capital. now to an emotional memorial honoring the nine vta workers who police say were killed by

their co-worker and took on a political tone as friends and family of the victims spoke out against rising gun violence and mass shootings. they also shared memories and well wishes for each other as they deal with the tragedy. many called on elected leaders to do something about mental health and gun violence as the event was held at this park in union city. for nearly two hours, family members shared emotional memories of the nine men who police say were killed at the hands of their co-workers. the cousin of adrian balleza smard her memories of him and the family of taptejdeep singh spoke about leadership. >> i will figure out to honor my brother to help out as many people as i can. >> it's not just gun violence that needs to end and be addressed at the national, local and state level. it's mental health. >> we have additional details. vta light rail service is canceled until further notice.

you need to find another way to get to work this week. the vta encourages people to use the regular vta bus services, due to higher demand, commuters are suggested to allow more time to complete trips. the vta bus system will operate on a holiday schedule for memorial day. learn more about the nine men killed in the shooting by going to our website and we posted ways to donate to their families and latest updates on the investigation, just go to nbcbayarea.com/vtayardshootings. as the grieving continues in san jose, people in florida are also now in mourning for a different reason. two people were killed and more than 20 people were injured in an early sunday morning shooting outside a northwest miami-dade banquet hall in florida. miami-dade police believe this was a targeted attack, saying that three people got out of an suv and began shooting into a crowd. the mother of one of the victims said one of her sons was there for an album release for an up-and-coming rap artist.

>> he called us frantic, telling us he had been shot and hurts. and he loves us. my husband is like no, stay with us. stay with us. >> the suspects fled after the shooting. there are three of them. investigators are working to find them. there have been more than 230 mass shootings in the united states since the start of this year, 2021. turning now to the pandemic, and the progress we are making, more than half of the total u.s. population has gotten at least one dose of covid-19 vaccine according to cdc data. in california, 17 million people are fully vaccinated. the state has given out more than 38 million doses. and employers across santa clara county face a deadline of tomorrow to comply with the new requirement to obtain records of the covid status of their workforce. the county issued the rule about two weeks ago, immediately raised questions about privacy and enforcement, but come

let's get a quick check of traffic conditions. contra costa, antioch bridge to highway 242, 28 minutes and we are not seeing any slow spots even through the tri-valley, through the south bay, so far smooth holiday light commute. full traffic report in a few minutes. just as you prepare to fire up the grill later today the cost of beef and pork is on the rise you probably already noticed that as you shopped. meat prices have gone up 20% because of the pandemic and gas being more expensive. overall food costs have risen 2.5% over the last year alone and probably noticed your paper products and also things like aluminum foil will cost you more. i you get your covid vaccine as a food 4 less store you could win $1 million or debris groceries for a year. get a vaccine at one of the

locations, parent company kroger is launching its community immunity campaign. the sweepstakes runs for five months beginning thursday. five $1 million cash prizes and 50 free grocery recipients. kroger owns foodco here in the bay area. trending this morning, it's a concert for the sake of science in paris. >> 5,000 music fans crowded together this weekend for an indoor rock concert which was also covid-19 experiment, this might be giving you anxiety seeing that crowd right now. the concert goers had to wear masks and take covid tests before and after the event. the paris hospital authority devised the test to assess how concerts resume as france gradually ends their coronavirus restrictions. as people lined up for the event, people carried the test kits they will use next week. for thai post concert test. the results of the experiment will be out by the end of june.

jose 97 degrees. in through the interior valley oakland 87. walnut creek 102. danville 100 degrees. pleasanton 101. your pets don't wear shoes so if it's too hot for the back of your pal. it's too hot for their paws and can burn their paws. downtown 80 degrees expected in san francisco and up through the north bay, 103 ukiah, santa rosa 101 novato 100 degrees. we have high humidity now because we tend to see the humidity recover overnight. we continue to dry out and humidity through concord, livermore, fairfield we start to fall less than 30%, where the fire index goes up as the conditions get more dry so we see elevated fire danger, critical in through the sacramento area, areas fairfield, concord and livermore. near record heat tod

and towards tuesday the windy conditions, another element we have to look out for when it comes to fire danger, temperatures remain in the 90s and into wednesday and thursday for inland areas we see decrease in temperatures with the arrival of cloud cover throughout the coastline and interior valleys, helps cool us off and next weekend we expect to warm it back up again in the interior valleys. quick check of traffic conditions, it's been really great so far when it comes to the traffic, if you have to get to work, you can relax and take a second cup of coffee even from your couch, you're not in a hurry. travel times right now doing good, westbound 4 from the antioch bridge to highway 242, 28 minutes, tri-valley drive times usually westbound 580 from grant line road to 680 would have been busy but today only 17 minutes and southbound 068 from 580 to vargas road about ten minutes. back to you.

one unique veterans group is getting a lot of attention along with donations this memorial day. the group is called wing man foundation and was set up by three active military members who experienced the loss of cam rads. when a servicemember is killed, the military focuses on next of kin travel to hospital or a planning of a funeral, leaving out extended families or non-spouses. the wing man foundation seeks to bridge that gap. >> by amplifying the voice and understanding that the government wasn't able to provide the same type of support that we thought the families families and remember the heroes. >> check out the full story and

going to get dry this afternoon with the winds picking up into tuesday that brings fire concerns which is why we have bob redell out there monitoring the situation. how is it looking out there? >> we get the sunrise over the hills in the tri-valley as we stand over dublin, the hills have been braun for weeks now, another sign that we are in this drought and the heat advisory concerns of the possibility of wildfires today especially with the fuels at historically dry levels. the heat advisory from the national weather service goes in at 11:00 this morning until 8:00 tonight for the north bay mountains and valleys, east bay interior valleys at the east bay hills and diablo temps forecast in the high 90s up to 105 in places. this knocked down before it spread into something significant, no

passing. michael rudometkin was one of the nine who died in san jose. his family says that family members are experiencing a roller coaster of emotion. his cousin says michael got along with everyone. >> always good times with mike. if you were having a hard time, could you call mike, he would make his way down from wherever he was at, cupertino, santa cruz. >> michael rudometkin graduated from evergreen college and a big fan of local sports teams including the giants, 49ers and the san jose sharks. more details on something our cameras captured over the weekend a delivery driver left a package at the gunman's home in san jose. he did not survive that attack, he turned the gun on himself. in the video you see the package delivery. the driver was not sure what to do but ultimately left it there at the home. the package is benign and not relevant to the investigation.

as the grieving continues in san jose, people in florida are mourning as well. two people were killed and more than 20 injured during an early morning sunday shooting outside of a northwest miami-dade banquet hall in florida. police believe it was a targeted attack. police say three people got out of an suv and began shooting into a crowd outside of a banquet hall. the suspects fled and investigators are working to find those suspects. new overnight, texas democrats staged a dramatic walk-out to block a restrictive voting bill this prevented a vote from being held on texas senate bill 7 also known as the election integrity protection act. the fight is far from over. some of those proposed changes end drive-through and 24-hour voting, adds proof of identity requirements for absentee voting and makes it easier for a judge to overturn election results even without proof that fraud affected the outcome.

members of the texas naacp say the bill would have disproportionately affected people of color. >> what is at stake is there an attempt to make this into an apartheid state to make sure that a small minority of conservative extreme white citizens can dominate our government. >> the bill passed the senate early yesterday morning and came up in the state house for final approval. texas governor greg abbott announced he would order lawmakers back to the capitol for a special session but it's unclear when that will happen. memorial day weekend is under way and we see a huge uptick in travelers compared to last year. for those hitting the roads you're probably seeing sticker shock when it comes to gas prices. "today in the bay" pete suratos joins us live from daly city with an update. what are you seeing? >> reporter: good morning to you, cierra.

here in daly city gas over four bucks a gallon so there is a bit of sticker shock places like daly city of course and other areas up and parts of the bay area but that's not stopping folks from traveling this memorial day weekend. let's look at the projected numbers from aaa how many travelers they expect this holiday weekend. they expect more than 37 million people to travel this holiday weekend, a 60% increase from last year when of course we were still in the midst of the pandemic. more than 2.5 million people are expected to travel by air but a big chunk of the 37 million, roughly 35 million will be traveling on the road and that's where they see those high gas prices as we mentioned, the national average is around $3 a gallon but in san francisco, oakland and san jose roughly around four bucks a gallon. travel numbers represent an increase from 2020 of course but still 13% fewer travelers than 2019. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay."

>> thank you, pete. now a live look at arlington national cemetery, where president joe biden is set to visit this memorial day. he will participate in the traditional wreath laying ceremony at the tomb of the unknown soldier. this is mr. biden laying a wreath in new castle, delaware, last memorial day. the first lady vice president kamala harris and the second gentleman will accompany president biden to virginia to are this year's ceremony. the president is also set to deliver remarks on the national memorial day of service. lots of memorial day event are planned for around the bay area today, many were canceled because of the pandemic. today people will gather at 10:00 a.m. in walnut creek for the city's annual memorial day commemoration which happens at civic park near the gazebo. at 11:00 a.m. the "uss hornet" will hold its ceremony and wreath toss, one of several events on board the aircraft

carrier located in alameda. maybe you noticed or heard memorial day week in fly-overs conducted yesterday in skies above the bay area. here are photos from the 20 vintage planes that make up the memorial squadron usa. pilots took part in flyovers across the bay area and sacramento including above the "uss hornet" in alameda. it will host several public events later today. turning to a live look in downtown san jose, we see the sun really shining there, rise in temperatures leading to a spare the air alert being issued. "today in the bay's" vianey arana tracking what we can expect today and i think it's heat, heat and more heat. >> that's a great way to explain it. heat and record highs potentially in some spots, santa rosa and concord. let's compare today's forecasted highs to the record set back in 2001. santa rosa 101 today, the record

was 100 degrees back in 2001 in concord. expect a high near 103 that could inch near 105. san francisco has a long way to go but 78 for the city is pretty hot for this time of year. oakland 87, nearing the 90 degree mark and san jose expected to hit the upper 90s. not nearly triple digits but close enough. a quick check of traffic conditions so far so good. a couple overnight crashes that cleared out, the maps are doing great. bridge drive times no metering lights just yet but the chp issued a high wind advisory for the golden gate bridge, something to keep in mind, west toward the bay bridge seven minutes. now we have seen the winds die down but they pick up again tonight. i have an update on that, cierra, back to you. california is working to return to normal. still ahead on "today in the bay," a look at how crowds are returning and push towards herd immunity. plus as we close our asian-american pacific islander heritage month, we have to talk

heritage month many immigrants arrived in the united states looking for safety and opportunity. sometimes they can find the taste of home in chinatown, japantown, little saigon or little manila. over the years many towns have been displaced. >> san jose has the largest population of vietnamese. little saigon was recognized by the city of san jose in 2007, it is alive and vibrant. around the bay area there are a lot of towns that have disappeared. this plaque on a corner of a building at chavez in downtown in san jose marks the first chinatown destroyed by a mysterious fire in 1887. four other chinatowns emerged after that but none remains in large part because of anti-asian sentiment of the time. san francisco's little manila or manila town's 12 blocks gone, gentrification is the driving force behind the forced
