form at the toll plaza so there goes the end of the clear drive, here as well as on the incline and the decline getting into san francisco for west 80. over to you. >> thanks so much. 6:01. developing unanswered questions in the aftermath of a deadly police shooting that sparked protests last night in san jose. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of san jose police headquarters and bob, police will talk more about what happened later today, is what we're hearing. >> reporter: correct, good morning to you, laura and cierra. the san jose police chief anthony motta expected to hold this news conference sometime later this morning. we expect him to share more details about why his officers initially made contact with the man they shot and killed and what happened in those moments before the shooting. 50 protesters shut down the northbound lanes of highway 87 chanting the name demetrius stanley, the man killed by two san jose police officers earlier this week. police released surveillance

photos from the moments just before the shooting they say shows stanley was armed. this happened monday night at around 9:45, on tufts drive near 680 and berryessa. the two officers were in plain clothes and were in the neighborhood to collect information about an armed robbery. one of demetrius stanley's friends questioned why police were there that late at night. >> that was the man defending his home by some people that were in plain clothes that came with weapons and ammunition and he defended himself like he was supposed to with the constitution that we were given as americans. >> we were not there last night to arrest him, to try to capture him. we had two officers at that location gathering information. it was related to an armed robbery that the suspect, he was the suspect in that armed robbery. >> reporter: san jose released three pictures from the street, the one shows stanley

with the gun and another one shows stanley pointing the gun at officers and third close-up of the handgun itself. it's unclear if the officers had body cameras on at the time because they were not in uniform, they were plain clothed. police met with stanley's family for at least an hour last night. again, a news conference sometime later this morning with the san jose police chief. reporting live here, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> 6:04 right now. oakland police chief laron armstrong will follow up with actions from officers following last year's george floyd protests. they suggest officers may be facing disciplinary action. the protests happened exactly one year ago and at times got out of hand. you may also remember law enforcement from across the state assisted oakland police in trying to get a handle on things. chief armstrong will hold a news conference this morning which will be also viewable on facebook.

developing in southern california, an outpouring of grief after a deadly workplace shooting inside a firehouse. it happened yesterday morning about 50 mills north of l.a. and authorities say the gunman was an off-duty firefighter who later returned home, barricaded himself inside and set his home on fire. he was eventually found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. last night dozens gathered to remember the 44-year-old firefighter engineer killed by the gunman. >> we are a family. we live, we work, we cry together, and just don't think something like this will happen. >> the station's fire captain was also shot. he is said to be in critical but stable condition. when covid vaccine booster shots start rolling out, the type of shot you got for your initial vaccination may not matter. federal health leaders are looking at what happens when fully vaccinated adults later receive a booster, not produced by the same drugmaker. say for example getting a

moderna booster after receiving a pfizer vaccination. the new trial comes as the likelihood for booster down the road or new shot every year just like the flu shot. if you live in contra costa county, the county may have you covered offering no-cost tdap immunizations at the same school campuses offering covid shots. the tdap is a required immunization for students entering the seventh grade, boosters will be offered in clinics through the summer, three schools started offering the booster yesterday. alkalinis and kenny high school and dallas ranch middle school. happening today, san francisco firefighters will remember two comrade whose died in the line of duty ten years ago today. lieutenant vincent pa rez and firefighter anthony valerio died when super hot gases triggered a flashover as they fought a fire in a four-story home in diamond heights. at 9:00 in the morning the fire department will transmit a radio

message and following that each of the city's fire station also will ring their bell to remember the pair. new details this morning and as fire danger really increases, people in alameda county will have a new system telling them when they need to evacuate. it's called zone haven and scheduled to go live on june 15th. all alameda county residents have been divided into zones. which you can see on this website. in two weeks residents can enter their address to learn their zones. during an emergency, emergency alerts will be released showing which zones are in danger. parts of san francisco and santa cruz are already using this system. in the meantime in san mateo county leaders are talking about what's being done to reduce fire risk along the peninsula, holding a virtual forum tonight at 7:00 held on zoom and livestreamed on youtube. to our climate in crisis and a looming decision today that may impact bay area air quality. here is a live look at the skies above in san francisco this

morning, and bay area air district leaders will vote on technology to be installed that reduce particulate matter up to 70%. the federal government requires it used at the valero refinery in benicia chevron and bp argue the retrofit is expensive and may force them to shut down their facilities. >> need a breath of fresh air out there this morning. let's check the weather and traffic together, as the commute is picking up, so many people heading back into the office these days. the temperatures though let's check with vianey in for kari this morning, are they holding steady? >> we're getting some cooling, laura but thanks to the high pressure that sort of hot air mass helps trap some of the particles that are close to the surface level, with enthey decide to issue spare the air alerts. things are shaping out better in the next couple of hours. i want to talk about the drought monitor. if you notice we're still doing not so well, up through the

napa, oakland, concord area, we're talking about an exceptional drought. d4, which is the worst category in the index when it comes to drought monitors. some things that you could do to maybe help water conservation tips, take shorter showers, i saw kris sanchez has a timer she popped up for five-minute showers. i thought that was neat. over to you. we'll take that advice and out to the roadway, exceptional is not great talking about drought but the drive is not bad. we have the build consistently now hayward and union city along the nimitz right about this time from 5:45 to 6:15 is when that starts to kick in, that's what's going on right now. same thing for the slowing, the longer drive that lasts half mile of vasco road around the dump entrance things back up slowing around the bend and here at the bay bridge toll plaza the build now really kicked in over the last couple of minutes, that's what you encounter out of

sweet. tesla isn't buying samsung. it could theoretically, tesla is that valuable. the stock market started strong tuesday and fell back. futures call for a higher opening and amc at an all-time high as investors think people will return to the movies. the hacks against one of the world's largest meat packers was worse than the company indicated. earlier yesterday the plant owned by jbs here in america would not close but close they did, at least for a day. they'll reopen today. this is the second major hack against american infrastructure, though not nearly as bad so far as we understand as the colonial pipeline hack. they'll take a closer look at how vulnerable american companies really are, coming up on the "today" show. >> what we know is that companies of all sizes, large and small, are vulnerable to cyber attacks. so every company needs to be

pandemic, binx and i, i mean if we weren't close before, definitely bestie now, which is why i'll fight a bear for him, okay? san jose right now we've got the cloud cover and you know what? it's going to be cooler today, so definitely keep that in mind, but here is the thing. if you live in the interior valleys, still kind of hot, in the 80s and 90s. let's see what's going on here. we have the morning fog, this big "h" that you see here was the high pressure that dried us out, the warm air mass that brought the record-breaking highs moving east now. behind it we've got a cooling effect and see how much cooler we'll be seeing this, this is going to stick around for today and also for tomorrow. 24-hour temperature changes in livermore, eight degrees cooler and notice the cloud cover so the low clouds helping keep the temperatures below the triple digit mark so just how much cooler are we going to be today? we've got a couple of 60s around the coastline, a couple of 80s down through the south bay, if you live in concord and livermore, you already know you're one of the warmer spots in the upper 80s still but over the next seven days, we have a little bit of that relief on the

way into friday though and saturday we've got sort of a change, we'll see some of the clouds burn off but a good weekend outside, hiking activities early on in the morning. we get 70s in the forecast. san francisco 61 degrees headed into tomorrow and as we look ahead towards the weekend, also expect a lot of sunshine, but mike, how are the roads? >> vianey, looking pretty good. we've been talking about for the last month we've been seeing a lot more traffic on the roadways in the morning and afternoon and evening commutes. looking at the bay bridge toll plaza filled in, in the last 15 minutes, things really just packed in here, as we look at your map, we don't have a lot of surprises. the travel times coming in building up for the top two numbers, highway 4, over toward 242 and 680 out of walnut creek out of pittsburg, cut through kirker pass and holds steady at 20, 22 minutes throughout the day. that is a smooth-moving traffic flow. the rest of the bay an easy drive. the bay bridge toll plaza

numbers are out, tsa screened nearly 2 million people at airports across the nation, friday through monday. that is six times more than last year's holiday weekend, but still more than 20% below the levels back in 2019. ohio's second round of vax-a-million winners have been chosen and announced today. this week's million-dollar drawing included more than 3 million adult entries and about 130,000 young people under 17 had a shot at a full paid college scholarship. overall the latest drawing had about half a million additional entries compared to the week before, so i guess it's working. >> and in west virginia they're going all-out with their vaccine lottery giveaways, two custom outfitted trucks, 25parks and fg and fishing licenses and five rifles and five shotguns. trending this morning a sky

few weeks, for the last month through may. highway 4 concord jams up approaching 242 and slowing for the nimitz as well as the tri-valley, typical build. back to you, laura. >> thanks, mike. hard to believe but one week ago today the unthinkable happened. a gunman taking aim at co-workers in the vta rail yard mass shooting. now we're seeing it actually from a different perspective, showing deputies and police officers as they converged moving in trying to stop him. >>bay's" kris sanchez is live from the memorial at city hall. this is a difficult four minutes of video to watch. >> reporter: i have to tell you, i had a hard time watching it myself as it was released by the sheriff's department last night, but will tell you we're not going to show you any of the victims in the video, we're into the not going to show you the gunman. this is from the perspective of one of the santa clara county sheriff's de

cam, he and four others went into the building looking for the gunman after getting a key card from a supervisor, who managed to make it out safely, even after the bullets were flying. they paused on the third floor, and then we hear one gunshot, then another, which we now know was the gunman turning the gun on himself. >> i see the gun right there. >> okay, stand by. stand by. let's just clear it off. hold it, hold it. >> i got it. >> i got the subject, i got somebody down here. get the gun. >> reporter: sheriff laurie smith says that she released that body camera video to show the community how well sheriff's deputies and san jose police officers worked together nearly without words because of that active shooter training they got. >> i thought it was important to show that this protocol i believe saved lives. there are over 100 people in that area. he had a lot of additional ammunition.

>> reporter: and the officers did respond quickly, according to their time line, 6:43 is when dispatch got the first call and officers were sent within one minute. within three minutes, they were on scene, within nine minutes they are on that third floor of the building, where the gunman was. >> just so hard, so hard for the people what they had to go through and now the victims and their family members, let's talk about that a little bit, kris. >> reporter: things are not going to be the same for them forever really, but we know that they are having to move forward with the logistical pragmatic things like planning funerals and memorials, and the community still can reach out to help the vta, it set up a fund through working partnerships that we can link you to our website nbcbayarea.com, but denny's restaurant chain in santa clara county is doing something today as well, so as you head out for lunch today if you have your meal at a denny's restaurant in santa clara county, they will

send 50% of the proceeds of the profits to the families to help them out in this very difficult time. >> that's nice to see the community really banding together. thank you, kris. stay with us, coming up in less than ten minutes, we'll talk live with vta board chairman glen hendricks about the impact on lightrail service as well and how the agency is working to help his employees heal from this horrific tragedy. as of this morning, all bay area counties are officially out of the red tier, if you live in solano or marin counties you're waking up to loosened restrictions. solano county is officially in the orange tier, it's the final bay area county to qualify. marin meanwhile is moving onto the least restrictive yellow tier effective today. under that tier, indoor capacities for businesses like restaurants and gyms can be ex-paneleded, while bars can reopen indoors at 25%, sonoma county has run out of time to

move on from its current covid restrictions and will remain in orange tier status until the state reopens june 15th. moderna is seeking full fda approval for its covid vaccine. the fda granted an emergency use authorization in december. at least six months of data is required before an application can be filed for full approval. last month pfizer made a similar move for its vaccine. new details on the effort to recall governor newsom, getting new support from labor unions. the california labor federation is endorsing the government calling the drive to remove him "anti worker." the federation has more than 2 million members and here are the three possible candidates now seeking to replace newsom, businessman john cox, will be making a campaign stop today in monterey and happening today windsor town council begins a new chapter following the resignation of its embattled mayor. councilmembers will hold the

first meeting since dominic foppoli stepped down against numerous sexual assault and harassment claims. the first order of business is how to fill his position. the "press democrat" reports councilmembers will weigh appointing a new mayor or calling for a special election to fill the seat. water levels at lake sonoma getting so low it's starting to expose underwater hazards. that's all according to "the press democrat." the low water levels prompt a new set of rules for boaters including extending so-called no wake zones to all but the widest and deepest parts of that reservoir. lake sonoma is at a little over half of its seasonal capacity. that's really tough to see. >> really hard. the winter snowpack not helping us out either, vianey. >> it's not. at this point the latest measurement showed zero percent of average. that doesn't mean that all of the snow is completely melted off the peaks but what it does mean is that the snow why where these are measured and compared next to water levels are now dry

and what that will unfortunately do is we're not going to get that boost the reservoirs need, typically once the snowpack melts during may and in through the spring it helps to boost reservoir rivers and lakes and streams that flow into it. in the south bay, 29.2% of historical average. mike, how are the roads? >> we have the backup at the bay bridge toll plaza, forms the traditional time we've been seeing that pattern sort of solidified over the last few months, last few weeks we've been seeing more traffic flow. as we get out to the maps overall things are moving smoothly, slowing of course through concord, actually out of pittsburg and bay point and 880 has started the early slowing from hayward into union city, where we see the first signs in there alvarado niles and across the bay in san mateo a crash at sky line for 92, checking on lane status and let you know. back to you. >> thanks so much, mike. it's 6:38. coming up next our top story as

shootings. nationwide over the past two decades there have been more than 330 active shooter incidents and nearly 3,000 people have died. that report comes today as it marks one week since the mass shooting at the vta rail yard in san jose. we have a live look outside san jose city hall, you see the growing memorial for the nine men killed and every day we learn more about who they were and the impact each and every one had on their families and of course our community. the entire vta agency is still understandably in mourning. joining us live this morning is vta board chairman glenn hendricks. thanks for taking the time to join us this morning and we're so sorry for your loss. i mean, you're a family there at vta. i saw how emotional you were on that very day when you had to come out and speak to everyone at that news conference. how are you doing? how are you coping? how is your family coping? your vta family? >> i'm moving along one day at a time and thank you very much for

that we're following and developing right now. some unanswered questions in the aftermath of a deadly police shooting that sparked protests last night in san jose. >> that's right, "today in the bay's" bob redell is live outside of san jose police headquarters and bob, police will talk more about what happened later today? >> reporter: yes, san jose police chief anthony motta will hold a conference at police headquarters at 11:00 this morning to discuss and share more details why his officers initially made contact with the man they shot and killed and what happened in the moments leading up to that shooting. last night here on your tv screen about 50 protesters shut down northbound lanes of highway 87 chanting the name demetrius stanley, the man killed by two san jose police officers earlier this week. police released surveillance photos from the moments before the shooting show stanley was armed with a handgun, it happened monday night around 9:45 on tufts drive near 680 and

berryessa. the two officers were in plain clothes and were in the neighborhood to collect information about an armed robbery they say stanley is the suspect in. reporting live here in san jose, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. in southern california, an outpouring of grief after a deadly workplace shooting inside of a firehouse. it happened yesterday morning about 50 miles north of l.a. the 44-year-old firefighter engineer killed by the gunman. the station's fire captain was also shot. when covid vaccine booster shots start rolling out, the type of shot you got for your initial vaccination may not matter. new this morning, federal health leaders are looking at what happens when fully vaccinated adults later receive a booster, not produced by the same drugmaker. say for example getting a moderna booster after receiving a pfizer vaccination.
