kris sanchez, a lot of questions for people. what can we expect, kris? >> you know across the board a lot of folks are feeling a little bit anxious about reopening california but a lot of folks say they are ready to go. our local businesses and counties can make rules that are more strict. we want to look at those that includes businesses after 15 months are doing things differently as we try to figure out how we move forward into the new future. san francisco mayor london breed announced on the whole it will be business as usual but we talked with customers who say they are ready for things to go full speed ahead. >> if the business is comfortable, i am. i am fully vaccinate . >> we're ready mentally and emotionally really, really ready. >> reporter: we'll break down

president leaving washington with key issues unresolved. >> right and we're tracking those unfinished issues, marcus and laura, as the president prepares to board marine 1 and then air force 1 to the uk. he'll land later today at the royal air force base. the first thing he plans to do is to speak to members of the u.s. air force station there. tomorrow a one on one meeting with britain's prime minister and then that g7 summit leaders have a lot of issues to discuss. the covid pandemic, cyber security, jobs, climate change, all on the agenda as president biden heads to the g7 summit in europe. world leaders agreed to charge corporations at least 15% tax to prevent them from shopping around overseas for cheaper rates, but it's his meeting next week with russian president vladimir putin that's drawing a lot of attention. the white house says the president will lay out america's

expectations and russia's consequences. >> the days of the united states rolling over in the face of russia's aggressive actions, interfering with our elections, cyber attacks, poisoning its citizens, are over. >> reporter: critics are concerned this meeting could backfire. >> i think this meeting is premature in the sense i don't think biden fully understands what his objectives with russia are or how to achieve them. >> reporter: biden leaves washington after infrastructure talks with republicans feel part. a bipartisan group may still come one a compromise but democrats are also preparing to push through biden's jobs plan on their own. >> we're not going to sacrifice the bigness and boldness in this bill. we will just pursue two paths and at some point, they will join. >> reporter: the effort to expand voting rights also hit a snag, only one senate republican supports it. one of those pieces of unfinished business the

president wants when he gets back. the press, by the way, following him to the uk, they were delayed several hours overnight when the pesky bugs, cicadas, got into the press charter, the plane that was waiting at dulles airport, they had to wait and get another one. i don't know about you guys, my friends out in california tell me they don't see them, they don't hear them. they are all over the place here, they are noisy and they are annoying. >> we don't see them here but i was in your neck of the woods last weekend yes and i saw them while having lunch. >> check your suitcase. don't you bring those things here. >> thanks, tracie. we are tracking a developing story south of the border, at least seven people are dead after a bus crashed nero saree ta near south of tijuana, 15 miles from the u.s. border. the bus was reportedly carrying more than 50 hyundai factory workers t rolled over on its

side. firefighters and paramedics worked to rescue multiple people in the wreckage. authorities are still not clear what the cause was. as the greeflg continues for the vta family in the railyard mass shooting a patchworkalserv. it's not clear when the lightrail trains will relaunch. vta looders said in the past maybe weeks or months. muni, sam trans and ac transit are helping bridge the gap in bus service. the largest shortages sadly have come on the days for funerals for one of the nine men killed. 5:05, happening today california's new attorney general will speak about racial profiling when it comes to traffic stops. the advisory board is holding a virtual mennule. rob banta will open that hearing. the last report the board along with the department of justice analyzed nearly 4 million traffic stops conducted by california's 15 largest law enforcement agencies.

a north bay school superintendent under arrest this morning accused of molesting a child. shoreline unified district superintendent robert r.e.i.n.s. is charged with suspicion of lewd contacts with a child under the age of 14. marin county school district released a statement saying in part the health, safety and well-ing with of all our students is our most important priority. the district says it took swift and immediate action placing mr. r.e.i.n.s. on leave. mandatory water restrictions may be coming to the south bay. the board is also expected to call for a 15% mandatory cutback in water usage. if it approved it will be up to each agency to someday how to meet restrictions. leaders in sonoma are asking residents to reduce usage by 15% after the council declared a stage one drought emergency. on saturday, drought tool kits come, first serve at sonoma city hall. in the meantime, sore isry

to say your water bills are going up for nearly 1.5 million customers in the east bay. mud directors unanimously approved a 4% hike taking effect next month and a second 4% hike will kick in next july. it affects customers in cities including san ramon, oakland, berkeley and richmond. customers may also be hit way separate surcharge months down the road if the drought persists. palo alto leaders are keeping an eye out for alternatives in an event drought conditions worsen. councilmembers aproved a new water management plan. the city gets its water from sf puc which this week called for a 10% irrigation customers leaders embrace for worst case, water audits, bans on sprinklers and the possibility of drawing water from other sources including the san joaquin river. we turn things over to meteorologist kari hall and i know a lot of times we hear

about the heat waves on land but not so much about marine heat waves. we hear about that phenomena known as the blob that may be on its way back to the pacific. >> yes, so we're starting to see that redevelop, so this is something we'll be talking more about. what happens is high pressure builds over parts of the pacific, and causes the sea surface temperatures to warm up, also causes very stagnant conditions and affects marine life in the bay area as well, first standard in 2013 and we've been seeing waves of it coming every few years. there is the possibility as the sea surface temperatures warm up, we could see impacts to our marine life and sea lion pups, they start to have impact there as we could see them not being able to find enough food and this is something we'll be following as those sea surface temperatures warm up out there in the pacific. we're watching our air temperatures here in the bay area warm. i'll have more in a few minutes. mike, what's going on right now

as the morning commute really starts to get under way? >> it's not so bad but i honestly didn't expect to hear you reporting about the blob so we know know what's out there. 280 this has been out there for a while and slowing intermittently toward de anza, the crash is on the shoulder but involved a crash that hit the roadway, the wall on the side of the road so that was a little bit sticking out to the slow lane. we're tracking that and also tracking 84, which reopened over the last 20 minutes and a smooth drive as you expect now into and out of sunol and fremont and no major issues for the rest of the freeways throughout this portion of your map. we look at the -- moving smoothly through san rafael without issue. folks moving at speed to the golden gate bridge. >> thanks, mike. 5:09 we are moving you forward with more local news we added another weekday newscast and "nightly news" in a new time

traffic over here, palo alto northbound with the taillights. the flashing lights no worries and north of university, there is construction a little farther north without delay. we'll check on the rest of the bay coming up. happy -- good morning, happy wednesday to you. a leak of tax information about some of america's richest people show they don't pay much tax, barely at all, in fact. the journalists at pro publica made the discovery, jeff bezos and elon musk who trade places at the richest men alive fairly often paid little to no federal income tax and they did so legally using loopholes in the law. one of the prole is publica reporter also be on the "today" show coming up at 7:00. >> and it's not just tax returns, it's also a lot of the information that goes into making those tax returns like partnerships and stock trades and gambling winnings and we also have audit information, it's a never before seen trove

of information. >> you may recall the "new york times" discovered donald trump who is not nearly as rich as bezos or musk paid just a few hundred dollars in federal income tax in 2016-2017. the nation's poorest do not pay federal income tax either, meaning that puts the burden on the middle class. we're keeping our eye on high prices. chipotle is paying more money because workers are hard to find. kevin roos a reporter at "new york times" prediction prices on the san francisco favorites like scooters and uber rides will continue to stay very high. used to be companies provided you a service at a loss in order to grow its business, that roos writes is probably over. we get inflation numbers tomorrow in the form of the consumer price index. they'll likely be high. the $64,000 question or the $72,000 question with inflation is how high those prices are going to go, and how long they're going to stick around,

or is this just a weird post-pandemic moment that's going to go away? and really extraordinary story from around the world, hundreds of sophisticated and dangerous accused criminals behind bars after several countries, including the united states teamed up and gave those bad guys fake secure phones. the criminals then used those phones to make their criminal plans and the police were reading their texts the entire time. laura, i don't know if you overheard a conversation i had in the newsroom yesterday with ruben martinez. i said to him it's a wonder the governments haven't come up with a fake signal or telegram or one of the apps and used it to catch bad guys. they did. >> wow, no, i didn't hear the conversation, with all the plastic things separating us, i can't hear. like, what? >> the one moment i get everything right, i have to drag ruben in here, remember yesterday i told you that is a possibility and then it came true. >> we'll take your word for it. a healthy dose of learning

missed that. i have to check it out before it comes out in december with the live version. so that's pretty cool. let's get a live look outside right now in san jose, as we wake up and we are seeing a clear sunrise across the south bay, we're going to see more sunshine today. check out the seven-day forecast as it comes up at the bottom of the screen, we're going to take a look at our high temperatures for today, starting in the south bay, with some upper 60s in milpitas today, reaching up to 70 for parts of the south county. we'll see a few more low 70s as we move over toward the east bay, reaching 70 in antioch but look at the upper 60s through the tri-valley, pleasanton reaching 66 today. oakland with a high of 64 degrees, and still a very strong ocean breeze near the coast, daly city reaching 57 today, redwood city reaching 64. mostly 50s in san francisco, especially the outer sunset and the marina district and for the north bay, we're going to see highs back in the 60s so this at

all does not feel like june. it feels more like march because we've had the storm systems moving just to the north of us. there will be a couple more and look at how close that rain gets to the bay area, it does move in to far northern california and we'll be watching that from friday night into early saturday, and then after that, temperatures go up, so let's take a look at the trend and the spot like napa, upper 60s today, low 70s tomorrow. the weekend feels nice, spring-like, low 80s and it will be warm into the start of next week. so looking at our overall inland forecast for the next seven days, we go from the low 70s and breezy today to upper 70s by friday. next week we'll see temperatures continuing in the mid 80s after a warm weekend, san francisco seeing some minor changes with highs in the low 60s to the upper 60s for highs. mike, any problems right now as the commute starts to build? >> we're all right at the bay bridge and i was wondering if your seven day would be with

welcome back. it's 5:4. with vaccination rates slowing down, the cdc is now warning johnson & johnson vaccines are at risk of expiring. health leaders are concerned doses distributed across the nation will go to waste. it comes after the fda put a pause on one-dose shots in april due to clotting risks but now the cdc director is urging people to get their shots. >> i support the acip's recommendation that the johnson & johnson covid-19 vaccine be used for persons 18 years of age or older in the united states population. >> the cdc says just over 11 million americans have received johnson & johnson doses. president biden making sure we never forget one of the deadliest school shootings in u.s. history. >> he praised this year's graduating class of marjory stoneman douglas high school in parkland, california, at the commencement ceremony.

some businesses it's going to be >> yeah, we need to take the chairs down and get some bodies in the seats. >> the way it works, repurchase our inventory and specifically to a venue like ours, we are booking tours from around the country and around the world. >> reporter: so many other places are, too. santa clara, contra costa, alameda counties, they are revealing their plans now. santa clara county has not yet revealed their plan, however, and we know that they have a little bit more strict, so that will be interesting to see. contra costa and alameda county say they are going to align with the state and that will mean no capacity limits for businesses, no social distancing requirements, masks will be up to individual businesses, except in health care settings or in public transit or at large events and such, both indoor and

outdoor. in our next half hour we'll look at san francisco, marin and napa, which have some of the highest vaccination rates in all of the bay area, so their rules will be a little bit different because they have a little bit more freedom to move around. if you want to get your vaccine before we head into the new normal, i'll post a link for you so you can find a shot near you so that you don't have to be perhaps the one person with the mask while everybody else is going maskless. in milpitas, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> always looking to help out, thanks, kris. two more counties are waking up in the yellow tier one week before the entire state goes green. napa and alameda counties have joined the majority of the bay area in yellow. indoor bars with open at 25% capacity, gyms increase to 50% capacity and wineries and tasting rooms increase to 50% capacity but this tuesday, all capacity restrictions will be dropped. as we move forward, there is a lot to keep track of, head over to nbcbayarea.com to see

what will happen in your county come june 15th. it's top of the home page for you. san francisco leaders are still holding out hope for a rebound in one of its critical money makers, the convention business. according to "the examiner" at least 30 moscone conventions have been canceled this year alone. in 2019 events accounted for about 20% of the city's tourism business. the first convention on the calendar is dream force, it's a big one this september. the crowds will be actually extremely limited this year, less than 5% of what is normally 140,000. we know summer is coming as well. vaccines doing their jobs and now it seems like everyone is itching to maybe get away. new this morning, you won't believe how many people say they are ready for an escape. i'll keep those to myself for now but good morning. we've been out here for several months updating folks on some of the traveling and the ebbs and flows of restriction and i can tell you, there is a little more traffic than we've seen in months. there's a lot more cars whizzing by and a lot more folks going in to catch a flight and the new survey is shedding light on to why. according to a u.s. census bureau survey reported by "the chronicle" more than 1 million adults in the san francisco metro area plan to travel at least 100 miles in the next month. researchers say that is a higher percentage than the state and the national average and these numbers come as more californians as we've been discussing than ever are vaccinating following that mask opening on april 15th here in the state of california. and as many make those plans for trips, pay close attention to your destination. the cdc has issued a color coded map and it shows the risk assessment levels for countries around the world.

this map is broken into four various risk levels, ranging from low to very high risk, it's going to be a good starting point when you're looking for your next trip and today is a big day for one european country, france officially welcoming visitors from the orange level countries and that includes the united states. now folks will no longer need to quarantine upon arrival in france, but they still will be asked for a negative pcr test, no more than 72 hours old. take a listen to what this travel expert has to say. >> these days of the nights of june which is a special reopening is important for us because it will reassure all the people and they will be much more confident in reservation booking anything for the summer. >> reporter: it is important to note that all passengers coming to the united states and this does include those u.s. citizens, they're also required to provide that negative covid test or documentation of covid

they left san jose. the father told police he never thought something bad would happen. >> there was nothing suspicious from that message, indicated that samantha had basically left him, and took the child or took liam with her. >> rodriguez could be extradited back to las vegas the end of the week. the vigil will be held at 5:00 p.m. at la colian park in san jose. police are issuing a new warning about a surge in car break-ins. "the examiner" is reporting fisherman's wharf is the latest hot spot for car break-ins in the city. police say crimes have more than doubled since last year, with over 2,000 incidents so far in 2021. officers are warning visitors to not leave valuables showing in their car. signs are posted around the fisherman's wharf area warning people about the rise in crime. a reprieve this morning for santa rosa renters struggling to make it in the bay. city leaders are backing off of

a plan from a county wide eviction ban in place through at least the end of august. councilmembers voted it down last night after a lengthy hearing. the proposal got blow-back from tenant advocates fearing it might spark a wave of eviction notices. it's 5:38 on your wednesday morning, half way through the work week. boy, the winds were kicking up in the south bay. like to play tennis and had to cut my game short yesterday, kari. how are we looking today? >> it's still windy today, laura. may have to hold off for another day or two. we're starting out cool with some low 50s and our live view of san jose, we have a nice cool morning. it's actually going to be a lot cooler than normal for our afternoon highs. take a look at this. this is more like march, rather than early june. where we reach up to 70 in antioch. mostly 60s here, and those winds still gusting at about 25 to 35 miles per hour today. we will warm up over the next

moved across the terrain in yuba county. that fire burning near wheatland, not too far from beale air force base. cal fire overnight put it at 25% containment. and those flames have burned close to 1,000 acres. that's right. napa county is actually looking for a new sales tax to try to help prevent future fires as you probably know, wine country really devastated by wildfires in the last few years. yesterday supervisors agreed to explore a quarter cent sales tax to pay for wildfire prevention efforts like fuel breaks. voters may see it on the ballot next june. the new tax would help pay for $42 million wildfire prevention plan. fires in napa county since 2017 destroyed about 1,500 homes, businesses, and other structures. quarter to 6:00 right now. president biden headed to europe this morning for his first overseas trip as president. >> scott mcgrew, this is his first as president but years of

video of the reunion, we'll start at the beginning here. a couple of weeks ago a king's county deputy posted about the homeless veteran whose dog had gone missing and the social post went viral, a local station ran the story. you look at him reunite there had. the family had found a dog during a road trip to the sequoia mountains, they saw the coverage and you know what? they traveled all the way to the city to return that dog and reunite, so nice. the dog took a little vacation in the meantime. >> heading out. anywhere around here vacation is the home is what we can do because the weather has been nice. >> it has been nice and we have had cooler weather, so if you're heading to the beach on your time off, well it's going to be quite chilly out there. same thing again today. a live look in san francisco, all of those high winds have mixed out the fog so it's been pretty clear and it will stay clear. wind speed forecasts another

windy one, so like having a hard time holding my hair down. we'll see the winds gusting at about 25 to 35 miles per hour, that's at noon. gets even stronger as we go into later in the afternoon and the evening, all of this bringing in that cooler than normal air as we get that strong ocean breeze, santa rosa look at that, 38-mile-per-hour winds again today. so as we go into tonight, the winds start to calm down but that's after only seeing temperatures reaching into the upper 60s today. so we're looking at the calendar, like what month is this? yes, it's june, and it's only 61 for a high in san francisco, 68 degrees in martinez, and 68 today for san jose. it's not going to stay that way. you can see the changes at the bottom of the screen with our seven-day forecast. we've had a couple of storm systems moving to the north of us, they've been so close to bring us some rain, but it does stay north of us, going into the weekend, as we are going to see that rain moving into far northern california. after all of this, we will be

warming up, check out livermore and our seven-day forecast from the upper 60s today to the low 70s tomorrow, upper 70s by the end of the week and then the weekend we're warming up to the low 80s, not too bad. that's about what we usually see for spring and so we are going to see more normal temperatures going toward the weekend, as well as early next week. we'll come out of the 70s and head toward the mid 80s for the start of next week, while san francisco still going to see a loot more sunshine, breezy winds, highs in the low 60s today with some upper 60s for the weekend into next week. mike, how is it looking right now as commuters get ready to head out the door? >> pretty good. look at the green sensors around the bay, kari. folks look at here in the south bay, the last few minutes have seen slowing continue but starting to move better for the speeds overall, just one section of silicon valley. the rest of santa clara county moving up the peninsula an easy drive. over here this is what i was seeing for ten minutes, i saw slowing south 680 coming down

toward mission south from mission north, past washington and that was a slower drive, mission boulevard itself shows n toward the rest of san jose, and silicon valley and looks like things have calmed down. haven't seen this develop over the last few minutes but look here, south 880 slows into hayward, typical pattern and we've been seeing the last couple of weeks slowing through union city earlier, right now still holding off at the limit, so keep that in mind and easy drive through contra costa county, getting toward the bay bridge, a little build on the span itself, but let's look at the backup that's forming at the richmond side of the san rafael bridge, just a little slowing, i shouldn't say backup. the build happening for the traffic flow a smooth drive so far. back to you. thanks, mike. 5:52 right now. an east bay mom speaking out saying her pride flag was stolen not once but twice. christine started flying the flag last year after her daughter sadly took her own life. she says it reflected who she was but then it was stolen. the first time she posted it on
