right now firefighters gearing up for what may be a difficult firefighting season. the risk if california goes in underprepared. president biden's international trip is getting under way. a live report on his jam packed schedule and message to world leaders. "today in the bay" continues right now. and good thursday morning to you. thanks for joining us. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm laura garcia. the same area that burned last year in the santa cruz mountains may get an order to evacuate today. this time it's only participate of a drill as firefighters want people that live in the area to be as prepared as they can be for this upcoming fire season.

>> the own potential wildfire problems. the story at the summit atop of highway 17. kris? >> reporter: this drill does not involve any active wildfire so if you are in santa cruz county, san mateo county near the czu and you burn smoke that is not part of the drill and you should call your local fire agency or 911. cal fire and other responders will test their planning and their emergency operations which could include the reverse 911 system call going out to remote areas. other agencies around the bay area are also conducting some of the similar operations testing some of them are also using wildfire or control burns to simulate that fire.

be in tune to what's happening in your community. the danger in burn zones. at first glance it shows housing policies in what researchers call wild land urban interfaces in places like santa rosa, paradise and ventura will contribute to a growing fire danger. that report was just released in the last few minutes. we had a quick look at it. we're going to take a deeper dive and will bring you that at 6:00 this morning. in the santa cruz mountains, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." all right, kris, thank you. president biden this morning just getting started on his first overseas trip as commander in chief. video of him touching down as he prepared to meet with british prime minister boris johnson later today. we are expecting the pair to announce a new agreement to reopen trade and travel between the u.s. and the uk. our washington insider, tracie

potts, is live in washington this morning and this all comes ahead of the pivotal g7 summit. >> reporter: exactly. but some news coming out of the meeting today, we expect travel, of course, hindered during the covid pandemic. the president also planning to announce this week 500 doses of vaccines that the u.s. is purchasing to distribute worldwide with the pandemic being a key issue on this week's agenda. >> in preparation -- >> reporter: today's meeting between president biden and british prime minister boris johnson will focus on climate change, security, trade, democracy and travel. the two are expected to announce a new atlantic charter, an agreement that includes a task force to quickly reopen travel to and from the uk. tensions over northern ireland could come up. all of this ahead of the g7 summit tomorrow where president biden hopes to strengthen ties

with america's allies. >> we share the president's emphasis on open societies, open markets, liberal democratic values. >> reporter: they also share concerns about russia. >> we want a stable, predictable relationship. >> reporter: the one-on-one will take place at this 18th century swiss villa. administration officials expect it will be long and tense with no agreement. >> i'm not impressed with this statement nor his deeds. >> reporter: he will address cyber attacks, ukraine and nuclear capabilities.

leaders are trying to map out a road to recovery when the state fully reopens. they're holding a virtual town hall at 6:00 tonight and will focus on what the reopening means. go to the link on the marin county facebook page. the vaccine lottery, anyone who has received at least one shot is eligible to win $50,000. the last drawing had winners in three bay area counties. these days there are other incentives to get you vaccinated. marin county is offering $25 gift cards that you'll get after the first dose. >> we want to achieve a high rate of security and we're working in whatever way possible to try to reach out to those that may be hesitant and a financial incentive might be all

from yesterday but still pretty nice with highs in the upper 60s in oakland, low 70s for the east bay as well as the north bay. we'll take a look at our weekend forecast and a big spike in temperatures coming up in a few minutes. >> yeah, no kidding. i'll let you take the bad news. the san mateo bridge, this is good news. taillights westbound. did you know there was that much traffic at 5:14? well, now you do. over to you. a very happy thursday to you. a super important day involving something super important to you even if you don't realize it. we get the consumer price index, the cpi, at 5:30 this morning, the monthly measure of inflation. last month it was really high. we think it will be high this month as well. there will be inflation and core inflation. core inflation sets aside the cost of food and fuel. and while all of us care about

food and fuel prices, they move all over the place and mu muddy the true numbers. you probably don't notice when you pay extra for paint. inflation is sneaky. the other thing we're facing as you well know are shortages, part of the cause of the price hikes. starbucks is running short of cups in some locations and those little green things that they plug the top with and, brace yourself, they are running short of cake pops. people go to baseball games but they never went normally but they do it because they can and logically that will fade over time.

maybe some lag and flashing lights in the area. the bay bridge where the traffic will build over the next hour. a live look and we see there's no fog and no traffic. kari, you get to do the sun rises most of the time. i thought i'd show one. >> oh, that looks nice. we are starting out this morning with a mostly clear sky. it is looking pretty good here. another day to enjoy more time outside. let's get a look at our south bay temperatures reaching into the low 70s in cupertino, downtown san jose reaching 72 degrees. we'll be up to the mid-70s for morgan hill and gilroy and the seven-day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen as we move over to the east bay. fremont a high of 70 degrees.

that's just perfect. redwood city in the upper 60s. downtown san francisco in the low 60s and our low 70s today, even some mid-70s as you head up to ukiah and still windy today. the reason we have the storm systems moving close by. but no rain expected for the most part. high pressure will build back across the bay area and temperatures will be heating up. that will be the main thing we talk about. the temperature trend in antioch. back to that really quickly as we are going to see our temperatures going from the mid-70s to the 80s and take a look at next week. yeah. we're going to have that up.

an early heads-up. we're in the mid-70s. mid-80s and then we start to see that trend going way up for the middle of next week. low 60s today and low 70s as the inland parts of the bay area will get some high heat. we're talking about bad greenhouse gases causing our planet to warm up at a faster pace than expected. we just hit a new record with carbon dioxide emissions and there's a sensor in hawaii that just peaked at 419 parts per million. the highest ever measured in its 63-year history. despite the pandemic and the global shutdown we were still putting out carbon dioxide.

>> reporter: preventing a wildfire from destroying your home requires some small steps, get in the habit of taking a walk around your home, perhaps weekly. look for hazards like dead plants, weeds, or other debris. then check the rules. >> if you're in an area affected by wildfire more than likely you'll have a defensible space. >> reporter: the buffer you create like that dry vegetation we mentioned. that's one third of a football field of clear space around your home or to the end of your property line. for many people that buffer will include your entire yard. call your city or county, too. they might have additional rules. finally, consider making fire prevention a community priority.

your neighbor may need some help and you may be able to help them. illegal drone activity is being blamed for a big hit to a threatened bird species. the species is the elegant turn. each year they are at the wetlands in huntington beach. someone last month crashed a drone there and even though they're banned from flying over the preserve the nesting birds were scared off some 2,000 eggs were reportedly abandoned. those eggs, sadly, could not be saved. up next, the top stories including a mask when it comes to work. there's some new confusion as cal osha suddenly back tracks on its ruling. coming up the latest on that and the places you will need to mask up.

"today in the bay" continues right now. thursday morning, we thank you so much for starting your day with us. i'm laura garcia. >> first we want to start out with cal osha and what's going on here. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you, marcus and laura. cal osha says it will now go along with the guidance put forth by the california department of health, public health, when it comes to mask guidance. the new rules will be if you are at work and you are vaccinated you can take the mask off regardless of the status of your co-workers. they were recommending people stay masked if anyone else in the room was unvaccinated. these were rules that did not line up with governor gavin newsom's plan next week.

after hours of public comment the board voted to rescind those rules in alignment but they can't officially adopt the rules until next week. ? spite of the rule change he's going to keep wearing the mask. >> we let them know that we still want to make everybody feel safe and welcome. we're going to have everybody wearing the mask. >> reporter: when the governor drops the mandate for vaccinated people next tuesday the state has said it will rely on the honor system to enforce the new rules that only vaccinated people can take off their masks. the safety board will meet again two days later, next thursday. the board must publish any new rules five business days before members can vote to adopt them. reporting live in downtown danville, bob redell, "today in the bay." a lot going on with that. a reminder on california's new

masking rules effective next tuesday. if you are fully vaccinated you will not need to wear the masks indoors in places like the grocery store, restaurants, even hair salons. but if you're not vaccinated you will be required to wear the masks in those situations. as bob was saying all on the honor system. now everyone will be required to wear those masks on public transit. this includes the airport and everyone will have to mask up. california fighting back after the legal decision that overturned a decades old assault weapons ban. a judge found the law unconstitutional leaving it in serious limbo. "today in the bay's" cierra johnson live with details on the heavy hitters heading to the bay area to lay out the state's next steps. tell us about it, cierra. >> reporter: yes, good morning. that ruling calling an assault rifle ban unconstitutional overturned nearly three decades worth of law and this morning the governor will be here in the bay area to discuss the next steps as much of the bay area is

still healing. the governor is expected to speak at 10:00 this morning and will be joined by several leaders including attorney general and dr. andre campbell with zuckerberg san francisco hospital as well as the executive director of giffords law center to prevent gun violence. the state is expected to appeal which is referred to as fundamentally flawed and a report shows an ar-15 to a swiss army life writing, quote, the popular ar-15 rifle is a perfect combination of home defense and homeland defense equipment. california first banned assault rifles in 1989. it was in 2019 james miller. saying assault weapons and a dozen mass shootings this year

"l.a. times" reports state senators pass the bill and is awaiting consideration by the assembly. the bill's author is an irvine senator who is seeking to end an event held at the orange county fair because so many fair grounds have recently ended their gun show events. it's not clear how big it will be statewide. a stabbing attack that may leave a san francisco man partially blind. this is the video showing a truck crashing into the franklin

market in russian hill last week. a short time later the 72-year-old store owner was arranging repairs when a man who asked to use the bathroom refused to leave. that's when his daughter says the man pushed the store keeper and pushed the weapon stabbing him in the eye. >> he was stabbed in his left eye and his arm repeatedly and his chest as well. >> police say officers arrested donovan catron monday. they recognized him from the stabbing. the district attorney's office is still trying to determine the charges. happening today a follow-up hearing in san francisco on the effort to boost protections for the asian-american pacific islander community. members of the city's human rights commission will update what's already being done. yesterday some said more has to be done and that starts with stopping the recent efforts to defund police. they believe that police budget

of lake berryessa. it was said to be out of control. no structures have burned. let's get an update on it. this one fully contained after burning 900 acres. at least one home was destroyed there. breaking news this morning, the latest weekly jobless report is out and claims fell to the lowest numbers since the start of the pandemic. 376,000 people filed first-time claims. some 3.5 million more americans filed continues claims. in the meantime president biden is in england getting ready for the summit. >> biden says he wants to make sure our allies know we have their back. >> that's absolutely the key message. both of the g7 and then at nato where he will re-establish to defend our allies if they are attacked the same way they came to our defense after 9/11. biden spoke to american troops at raf base in cornwall.

great weather and we're finally getting to enjoy it next to each other. >> moving us forward. >> how are we looking today, kari? it's going to be another nice and cool day. the update of the drought monitor where we are still seeing more conditions worsening especially for the bay area where we see the spreading of the dark red color indicating the highest level of the drought now moving closer to the coastline. the updated drought status levels. let's once again take a look at the cooler weather that we've been feeling across the bay area for now as you look at the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen you'll see those changes ahead. today we're in the low 70s, the mid-70s, from morgan hill as well as gilroy. for the east bay we're going to see more mid-70s. and cool for the peninsula.

we'll see upper 50s in san francisco, too, but will see a few more 60s from the mission district downtown reaching 63 degrees there. reaching 73 in sonoma and still a brisk wind picking up today. windy at the ballpark this evening. you will see those temperatures at first pitch in the low 60s dropping down to the upper 50s, maybe harder with those extra layers on but we are going to see still those breezy winds picking up today. the storm systems are passing to the north of us and we've seen it really causing some cooler than normal temperatures gusty winds and really close in far northern california not making it to the bay area. once those storm systems move out high pressure will be moving in and that's going to cause those temperatures to spike as we go into next week and, unfortunately, we may see really hot temperatures.

a plan to call the air conditioning repair person because we'll be in the mid-70s for the next few days and then we go into the upper 80s for the weekend in antioch and then some upper 90s even topping out at 102 degrees by next thursday there so, yeah, it's going to be really hot going from what we've been feeling some early springlike weather to the summer. still windy. tomorrow it starts to warm up. it doesn't look like we're going to see some significant warming in san francisco. so we go from the low 60s and then to about 70 degrees and hopefully we can have somewhere to go to find some relief from the inland valley heat. mike, what do you have going on

is expected to plead guilty to helping him run his mexican cartel. he was arrested in february. el chapo, guzman, was arrested by mexican authorities and extradited to the .s. in 2017 after twice escaping from mexican prisons. he is now serving a life sentence. you have to see this thing in mexico, it keeps on growing. it appeared in late may on a farm in central mexico but is bigger than a football field and is drawing a lot of crowds. the mexican government sent in soldiers to keep people away from the edge of the hole. it is 50 feet deep. some residents believe it is the result of groundwater or a water bottling plant in the area. tourists may be returning, the source of thieves. the car break-ins on the rise. now we have some dramatic video to prove it. our nbc bay area reporter was in
