this was? >> this was the san andreas fault, so a lot of people are really concerned about this. we had about 300 people who were shaken out of bed and reported to the usgs, yeah, i felt that and this heat map shows you the light shadings, exactly where and which areas in the bay area that felt that quake, so we are seeing that and feeling that in the south county right now. once again that was on the san andreas fault. it happened a little while ago a 3.5 but we continue to watch these very closely because it could be a foreshock to a bigger event. we'll be watching this. hopefully no more shaking. does this have any impact on the b.a.r.t. lines? >> b.a.r.t. doesn't start for another half hour, no problems reported. most of us in the studio didn't feel it here but we'll check. the closest station is berryessa just off of 680. 84 has the normal closure. here is silicon valley, san

go. so that hill right there, he beat me up there. >> reporter: after a few words for friends and those gathered, nicholas husted, liam's father, hiked up that hill as a way to honor and remember his son. this case spans three states. investigators say liam's mother left san jose with him may 24th. hikers found his body on a trail outside las vegas, nevada, may 28th. 11 days letter she was arrested, 35-year-old samantha rodriguez at a motel in denver. the last time he saw his son was sunday, may 23rd as he headed to work. >> normally i would sleep with him and sunday i didn't. normally i'm in bed holding his hand, and i didn't. and these are the type of things that i'll never get back. >> reporter: las vegas police detectives have not described the condition of liam's body or how he died when he was found near the start of mountain springs trail just outside of las vegas.

moreno left a note for husted describing why she left but no hint of potential harm. >> "i'm sorry i had to do it like this. i'm going to try to get a house for liam and i." >> reporter: family members described liam as having special needs but would not talk about recent difficulties or his mother. during the event, nicholas spoke about his son as if he's still here as he described the vigil. >> the first thing i told him when i saw this stuff this morning, look how many people loved you. >> reporter: sergio quintana, "today in the bay." >> i can't imagine the heartbreak. an east contra costa police investigating a shooting at a popular outdoor shopping mall. one person was shot at the streets of brentwood parking lot. two shooters in two separate vehicles fired shots at about 5:00. a 21-year-old brentwood man was hit. he has non-life-threatening injuries. a gunman was found at the scene.

police do not have a motive so far in the case. develop this morning, new details on the gunman in the vta rail yard mass shooting. the agency talking more about the conduct of that person at work with specific information from his personnel file. during the gunman's 20 years at vta there were four incidents resulting in discipline, all happened over the past two years. in july of 2019 he was sent home for two days without pay for insubordination. he refused to follow company policy signing out a two-way radio for his job and january of 2020 he and a co-worker got into a verbal altercation, the unnamed co-worker said they were scared of him, saying "if someone was to go postal, it would be him." but the case was eventually referred back to his department manager, after finding nothing in the gunman's history to support that claim. in october of 2020 he refused to attend a mandatory cpr class citing covid concerns. the case was never resolved and one final incident last

"today in the bay's" cheryl hurd gives us a look. >> reporter: oakland's grand lake theater has been open for two weeks. new movies are out and people can't wait to see them on the big screen after covid-19 forced theaters to close for more than a year. >> the most important thing is being back in the cinemas and sharing film with an audience. >> reporter: an audience has to wear the mask and reserve seating, which is six feet apart, from people you don't

know. the owner of this theater says those rules won't change much next tuesday. >> we're not going to go 100% capacity like so many people are planning to do. we're going to keep requiring masks. >> reporter: bowling is becoming popular again for kids. the general manager jorge garcia recently started alowing people inside. he's ready for the reopening, but he knows there will be challenges. >> we don't know the guidelines yet as to what's going to happen. people think they're going to be completely free to do whatever they want to do. so we still are going to enforce rules and regulations. >> reporter: masks will be required inside. the oakland zoo's ceo says policy changes are coming on june 15th. >> we're going to keep our time ticketing so everybody still needs to get a reservation to come into the zoo. >> reporter: the zoo will maintain capacity restrictions at 50%. it will stay there for a couple of months. masks will be required in areas

where there are crowds. vaccinated people can take their masks off outdoors. unvaccinated people have to keep their faces covered throughout their visits. so things will be a little confusing on june 15th, whether or not masks are required, it's probably best to keep one with you because you never know when you'll need it. in oakland, cheryl hurd, "nbc bay area news." the cdc says early data indicates a higher than expected number of case of heart inflammation in young adults following the second dose of a covid-19 vaccine. half reported myocarditis occurred between the ages of 12 and 24, even though they accounted for less than 9% of doses administered. the cdc also says there have been reported cases in people 16 to 24. the majority of the cases occurred in men following the second shot of either the pfizer vaccine or the moderna vaccine. most of the patients had a full recovery from their symptoms. the cdc's vaccine advisory

guess what? it's friday. >> yay! >> meteorologist kari hall has a look at that forecast for us. oh, i love frizz, kari. >> don't you love us? >> you, too, and it's going to be a good one. we're getting ready to head out the door, taking a look at our forecast in pleasant hill, some low 50s as you step out to a cool start, we'll get a lot more sunshine for today and a slow warmup as we go from the low 60s at 9:00 to the upper 60s by 11:00 and i think we'll see some low 70s in time for lunch. it's going to be a good day to head out for a hike. forecast for the south bay, we'll start out in the low 50s, but then at 10:00, we're at 62 degrees. we'll see some low 70s at 2:00 and really a pleasant day once again. i think we should really enjoy it as you check out the seven-day forecast at the bottom of the screen.

you'll notice some changes especially farther down the line. we're still in with the mild weather today, reaching 78 degrees in morgan hill and 75 in cupertino and toward walnut creek 6 for a high. fremont reaching 72. we've been doing very well this week with our natural air conditioning continuing and slightly warmer today compared to the past few days. low 70s on the peninsula and mid-60s in san francisco. our north bay temperature also reach up to 73 in santa rosa. as we go through this forecast, we are going to have a big time warmup. i want to show you this ten-day forecast for gilroy, so we're in the upper 70s today, low 80s tomorrow, really nice weekend, but then as we go into next week, take a look at these bars and how far they go up, reaching 96 on wednesday, and still really hot on thursday as well as friday. overall as we look at our seven-day forecast for the inland areas, one thing you can see the trend will be in the upper 70s today, mid 80s tomorrow, and we'll see those

i need someone to help me, but they can't resolve it on their own. i think that's what stops people the most is fear of being judged. >> reporter: supervisor peskin has a history of making stinging comments about department heads, unhappy with the fire department response to a fire in his district in 2018, he called for the fire chief's resignation as crews battled the flames. he later apologized. responding to complaints about tuesday's board meeting, san francisco mayor london breed's office issued a statement saying "there have been too many cases of city staff feeling disrespected, berated and harassed for too long. the mayor will not tolerate a work environment where department heads and staff don't feel like they can do their jobs." she has asked the city attorney and department of human resources for ways to handle these issues when they occur. experts say people in treatment can and do continue working. tonight, peskin's staff members say they will provide an update on the situation next week. in san francisco, jean elle, nbc

bay area news. we get a better idea of how much the upcoming special election to recall governor newman reports, the tab at $215 million about half earlier high side estimates. the state not county also likely have to pick up the tab and it's possible the projected date for the election may be moved up. democrats are expected to waive a lengthy financial review allowing the election to be held sooner rather than later. the stanford baseball team is one step closer to a major title. what it will take for them to get into the college baseball world series. a huge development is going up near union city's b.a.r.t. station. the city council approving that project. the mixed use buildings include a grocery store, 146 of those units will be below market rate, nearly three dozen buildings will be built. the first part of the construction demolishing old industrial buildings could happen as soon as this year. the project will take about four years to complete.
