peter, thank you very much. and now to another breaking story overnight. a stunning report that shows the justice department under then president trump forced apple to hand over data from the accounts of at least two democrats on the house intelligence committee. nbc's senior washington correspondent hallie jackson joins us with the latest on this one. good morning. >> reporter: hey, craig, good morning. this extraordinary new reporting shows the lengths the trump administration was willing to go to to hunt down leaks related to the russia investigation, showing almost no one was off limits, not even family members as the trump justice department zeroed in on key members of congress with access to some of the country's most sense tifd -- sensitive and secret information. a bomb shell report this morning about the justice department taking almost unheard of steps to investigate members of congress and their families under former president trump. the department seizing records of at least two u.s. lawmakers on the house intelligence committee. both vocal trump critics.
7:08 am
"the new york times" reporting that in 2018, the justice department targeted records of the communications of key democratic lawmakers, their aides and family members, including one child. the committee confirming to nbc news that the doj secretly subpoenaed tech giant apple for the data of congressman adam schiff and eric swalwell, both democrats from california. it was all part of an aggressive push by the trump administration to determine who was leaking classified information to the media. at the time, the intelligence committee was investigating russian interference into the 2016 election. >> at the down of the trump administration we saw a spate of classified information be released into the press. it threw the white house into chaos, and there was a lot of pressure first on attorney general jeff sessions, later on attorney general bill barr to figure out who was the source of these stories. >> reporter: the times writes that early in the trump administration, the data and other evidence did not tie the

committee to the leaks and investigators debated whether they had hit a dead end. but the investigations continued under attorney general bill barr. >> they ought to investigate adam schiff for leaking that information. he should not be leaking information out of intelligence. they ought to investigate adam schiff. >> reporter: schiff has denied the president's allegations and now condemns the investigation. >> it's extraordinary, maybe unprecedented for the department to seek records like this. >> reporter: the justice department declining to comment to nbc news. it's not clear if any republicans were also subpoenaed. nbc news reached out to former attorney general jeff sessions, former attorney general bill barr, no comment there. barr declining to comment to the "new york times" as did apple. certainly more on this to unfold throughout the day. there's a concerning development in the fight against the virus. the cdc has scheduled an emergency meet to discuss growing evidence that certain vaccines may be linked to a

heart issue in teens and young adults. we're going to talk about that with dr. ashish jha in just a moment. first, morgan chesky with our report. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, and this study found higher than normal cases of heart inflammation in patients under 30 after their second shot. meanwhile, here outside houston methodist, more than 100 staffers are refusing to get their shot and are now headed to court. from the exam room to the courtroom, this morning, new fronts in the fight against covid-19. the cdc finding 16 to 24-year-olds who received the pfizer or moderna vaccine have experienced higher than normal cases of myocarditis, inflammation of the heart muscle. myocarditis symptoms include fever, fatigue, shortness of breath and chest pain. the cdc said the higher rate of cases occurred special young men following their second dose of

an mrna vaccine but notes the reports are rare given the number of vaccine doses administered and that most patients quickly felt better after receiving care. federal officials calling it a clear imbalance but adding nor research needs to be done to confirm whether the vaccines are to blame. >> the benefits of getting vaccinated far outweigh any of the potential risks or side effects. >> the fda turning its attention to kids, a top adviser saying all children should be vaccinated, stressing herd immunity is critical with more contagious variants on the way. now under fda review, moderna's new covid vaccine specifically for 12 to 16-year-olds. in texas, houston methodist, doubts over the vaccine have led to legal action. >> you're willing to lose your job over this. >> yes. >> tell me why. >> because i am not going to take that vaccine. >> jennifer bridges, one of 117 hospital workers now part of a mass action lawsuit, suing houston methodist for its policy requiring all staff to be vaccinated or terminated.
7:12 am
the hospital thanking the more than 24,000 other employees who followed policy. >> what the mandate has allowed us to do is go that last mile and get everybody vaccinated so we have every layer of protection for our patients that we possibly can. >> reporter: and a court hearing has been set up later today regarding that lawsuit at houston methodist, they are far from the only hospital group to have a vaccine mandate. johns hopkins medicine, based in baltimore, maryland, has a similar rule in place. no pending litigation there so far. savannah. >> morgan, thank you very much, and we're joined now by dr. ashish jha. the dean of brown university school of public health. dr. jha, good morning, good to see you. >> thanks for having me back. >> this came up a few weeks ago. now we know according to federal health officials that the incidents of myocarditis, this heart inflammation in young people is higher than you would otherwise expect. what do you make of that? >> we're still obviously sorting
7:13 am
out to what extent it's linked to the vaccine. it does look like in rare instances, the vaccine is leading to a number of kids, a very small number of kids getting myocarditis. we need to figure out is it really the vaccine, and if it is, can we figure out who it's going to happen in and prevent it. those are the major issues in front of us right now. >> how serious is something like myocarditis? >> almost all of the cases are incredibly mild, people recover quickly. we have not seen much in the way of severe cases, obviously hoping we won't. but occasionally it can be more severe. it rarely ever leads to anything as horrible as death, but we have to keep an eye on it. it is an inflammation of the heart. it is not irrelevant, and we just have to make sure it stays mild and the kids recover quickly. >> here we are trying to get the last, more hesitant folks vaccinated and something like this comes up, and i can imagine
7:14 am
it gives skeptics a little ammunition, and wait a minute, here's another example of something, the smartest folks, the officials, the regulators didn't know about. they start vaccinating young people, and lo and behold, potentially there is this side effect. what do you think when people are watching that and might think, well, see, now, this is why i want to wait and see about this vaccine? >> what i would say is two things. first of all, we know that every vaccine, every medicine can have side effects. there isn't a single medicine i have ever prescribed in my life that doesn't have some side effects, and we learn about them as we give them to people, but we want to make sure they're not serious. and most importantly, we want to identify them relatively early. the other point of course is you can get myocarditis from covid itself, and your risk of having computations from the infection remain way higher than your risk from vaccine. no vaccine is completely perfect. these are very safe but we're
7:15 am
going to identify side effects every once in a while, it's a normal part of any therapy, any vaccine that we give out to people. >> on another subject, president biden and the other leaders of the g7 have committed to 1 billion doses shared with the rest of the world, particularly the developing world, how significant is that, how important, and is it happening fast enough? >> you know, on one hand, it is absolutely significant. it's important, that's a good amount of doses to get us started. i have two thoughts. one is it is not fast enough. a lot of those doses won't come until early '22. we've got to get them out faster than that. and the second is it's just not enough. we have 7 billion people in the world, we need close to 10 billion doses. it's a good effort, a good start, but we need to do more. >> real quickly before i let you go, doctor, always take advantage of getting to talk to a doctor. i've got a little cold, my kids have a little cold. it does feel anecdotally like people are starting to see that common cold circulating again.
7:16 am
what do you make of that? >> by the way, the same thing in my family as well. you know what it is, it's us starting to spend time together. >> when people spend time together, viruses spread. this is why we couldn't hang out last year. the up side is that we can now spend time with each other, but the downside is we are going to see some of these colds starting to pick up again. this is just a normal part of getting back to normal. >> it is. all right, dr. jha, thank you so much, take care. >> thank you. >> craig, over to you. >> savannah, tom llamas joins us now with some heart stopping moments for boaters in texas. >> that's right, good morning, guys, the weekend excitement started early for a group of four women. take a look, emergency crews were called to the longhorn dam after a boat was spotted hanging precariously over the edge. eventually, rescuers finally got there, they lowered the vest to the group and used another boat to pull them to safety. the electric boat got swept up in a current and it wasn't powerful enough to escape, you can see how close they came to the edge right there.
7:17 am
>> i'll say. that's a little scary. glad there's a happy ending there. let's bring in al for our first check of the weather. hi, al, happy friday. >> happy friday to you, savannah, and happy friday to all of you, we've got to make sure our air conditioners are working now. especially to the south. 18 million people under heat advisories, heat watching, heat warnings, from california all the way to oklahoma and texas. 10 to 15 degrees above average temperatures from the southwest all the way up into the great lakes. look at some of these temperatures today, green bay, wisconsin, 13 degrees above average at 89. minneapolis, for the seventh, i think eighth day in a row temperatures above 90 at 13 degrees above average. 94 in st. louis. detroit, almost 90 degrees. as we move into the weekend from omaha, salt lake, phoenix, lubbock, oklahoma city, temperatures five to ten degrees above average, and look what happens into early next week. kansas city, you're going to be in the 90s.
