still warm going into the weekend, with highs reaching into the 90s. the excessive heat will be all across the region, and we'll be watching that as well as our fire danger. marcus? >> yes, okay. it is monday. thank you, kari. you know what? in less than 24 hours, california fully reopens there by lifting most of the restrictions put in place due to the pandemic. now, from san jose to l.a., things will look a lot different out there. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live for us in san francisco, moving us forward this morning. pete? >> reporter: good morning to you marcus. california governor gavin newsom will be in town later this morning to talk about the travel and tourition industry as we are less than 24 hours from the state officially reopening. let's talk aboutment so of the major changes we expect to see starting tomorrow on june 15th. ich of course put in place itch restrictions based on covid cases in a certain area.

also capacity and social distancing will no longer be required and for vaccinated individuals, they can go maskless in most cases. for some, the changes will take some adjusting to. >> like restaurants and stuff, it's already like you have to wear your mask until you get to the table and you take it off, which i think is a bunch of b.s. really, but like in walmart, target, like big public spaces, i think you should keep your mask on. >> reporter: as i mentioned, california governor gavin newsom will be in san francisco today talking about the tourism industry, specifically investments to jumpstart the travel and tourism industry and also he'll make an announcement about a new vax for the win program incentive. the press conference will take place later this morning at 9:30 a.m. reporting live, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> a day many people have been waiting for, for about a year and a half, pete, thanks. vice president kamala harris today is traveling to

greenfield, south carolina, set to kick off a national vaccination tour by top administration officials. the goal here is to get shots in the arms of 70% of u.s. adults by july 4th. according to the cdc, more than 143 million americans have been fully vaccinated, that's over 43% of the population. harris' vaccine push comes as president biden is waking up in brussels today for the next leg of his overseas trip, a one-day nato summit. his job is to reassure allies after four years of donald trump's america first policy, the u.s. has their back. "today in the bay's" tracie potts is live with a look ahead at that and wednesday's meeting with russian president vladimir putin. good morning. >> it's pull leading up to that, cierra, good morning, everyone. we heard from the president this morning, a few hours ago, in fact, when he spoke unexpectedly with reporteders headed into that native meeting in brussels.

at the nato summit in brussels meet the new american president, eager to hear that america is back on board protecting its allies. >> america is back in the business of leading the world. >> reporter: on their agenda, climate change, afghanistan, technology, and threats from china and russia. the biden team insists sanctions are working. >> you never know the dogs don't bark. sanctions on ukraine on russia for ukraine for example may well have prevented further russian aggression in trying to take more of the country. >> i think sanctions are great but i think it's time to start thinking about hitting back. >> reporter: russian leader vladimir putin meets with wednesday, proposed a trade turning over russian c hackers for those in the u.s.

>> are you open to that trade with vladimir putin? >> yes, i'm open to, if there's crimes committed against russia, that in fact are, and the people committing those crimes are being harbored in the united states, i'm committed to holding them accountable. >> reporter: mr. biden enters into today's nato summit after disagreement with g7 allies on competition with china and a royal sendoff from the queen of england. ♪♪ they talked about world affairs, including wednesday's meeting with the russian leader. tracie potts, nbc news. nbc's keir simmons sat down with president putin ahead of his meeting with president biden. watch part of the exclusive one on one interview tonight on "nightly news" with lester holt. tonight at 6:30. you can also catch a preview of the interview on the "today" show, right after "today in the bay." new overnight, one person is protesters. it happened during a protes late last night over a police shooting earlier this month. a car drove straight into the crowd. one woman died. protesters pulled the suspect from the car.

he is now in custody. police believe that that driver may have been impaired. new details on the weekend mass shooting in austin, texas. police are reporting the first death a 25-year-old man who died yesterday, more than a dozen people were injured. one juvenile suspect is in custody. another suspect is at large. investigators believe that the dispute between the two led to the gunfire. austin's police chief says that most of the victims were innocent bystanders. in san jose, meanwhile, friends are now talking exclusively to nbc bay area about the mother of three who died when a pickup truck slammed into an outdoor dining ware restaurant on friday night. that victim 35-year-old deanna parito was a waitress at the agave bar and grill, moved to america from colombia. authorities say that she actually died, when the driver suddenly threw a parked truck into reverse. the driver is now in custody. one close friend who did not want to be identified is stunned that the restaurant reopened the very next day.

>> we are upset because we felt that they have to close one day in honor. >> the restaurant did not comment. two men were also injured and are expected to fully recover. the driver now facing charges, including vehicular manslaughter and felony dui. happening now, temperatures across california are expected to break records this week and that means the fire danger is high. so fire crews were warning everyone that they need to be prepared for wildfires and the possibility of evacuating. one san diego county woman who lost her home wishes she and her family had been better prepared. >> i think that everybody hopefully will make a plan and make the important things easily accessible. >> firefighters say everyone should have an emergency kit ready along with important documents and safe accessible

place and an evacuation plan. 6:07, as we get you started with your day on this monday. earlier i said it was friday, i just feel so good. >> i was hoping. >> you know, someone probably said it is. >> fine, done. >> but it is monday and we're getting started off with some cool temperatures, kari. >> yes, and we can see the fog in san francisco as we get a live view of the golden gate bridge, this is what's going to help keep the city cool as well as much of the coastline, not only today but the next several days, so as you get ready to head out for work in oakland, we are seeing some clouds, temperatures in the mid-60s. it's a little bit milder than what we normally see to start out the day. it won't heat up reserved for wednesday into the end of the week. our high temperatures today reach into the low to mid 80s for our warmest spots inland and we'll talk about that heat coming are you watching right now for the morning commute? >> a slower whether weather than the heat, slowly building at the

bay bridge toll plaza, about almost ten minutes, since i first saw the signs of the backup the toll plaza and the maze, the approach is looking fine. east shore freeway typical slowing through richmond coming out of vallejo for 37 toward novato and highway 4 coming through pittsburg and bay point toward concord. typical pattern more traffic on the roadway. more slowing in san leandro. san jose shows more slowing north 101 easing up the next build will happen, this is sticking around, south 101 toward the airport. i don't see any crews in the area but let me know if you know what's going on i can tell you the slowdown toward 380. back to you. with less than one day to go until covid restrictions are dropped, many employees in the bay area are gearing up to return to the office. next on "today in the bay," the all new revelation facebook ceo mark zuckerberg is making about working from home. we started -- closed with

the time is 6:12, time to get up, get moving, get this day started. it's beautiful, sunny and warmer than what we normally start with mid-60s in the south bay. we'll see a slow warmup today and looking at another mild one, with highs here reaching into the upper 70s. we'll talk about a midweek heatup, coming up in a few minutes. and even though the slowing headed south on 101 and also on 880 down toward the san mateo bridge, you're looking at, it moves nice lay cross the bay in either direction. we'll show you where things are starting to build in the south bay, coming up. good morning, very happy monday to you as well. the s&p 500 will start at new stock market records today, maybe go up from there. i want to take you out to the futures, as you can see, there's not a lot of movement one way or

the other, but it comes after friday's record-setting close. the s&p 500 a really good measure of the market, taking account of 500 different companies compared to the dow 30 industrials, which have just 30. generally good news on the market, despite the very obvious threat of inflation. the federal open markets committee starts a two-day meeting on interest rates tomorrow, so it would make sense you're not going to see a lot of movement on the markets until they announce a decision on wednesday. the big news in the small world of electric vehicles is the ceo and cfo of lordstown motors have both resigned just a short time ago. earlier the company said it was struggling to continue. lordstown is named after the factory in ohio that general motors was going to shut down when it was rescued by the electric truck maker and now it faces another shutdown. elon musk talking about bitcoin that caused the price of bitcoin to spike well below its all-time highs.

you may recall, tesla said it would accept bitcoins, then said it wouldn't because the creation of bitcoin by powerful computers solving math problems used so much electricity it was hurting the environment. musk said when those computers could be powered in a green way, tesla will once again accept bitcoin. that's what he said yesterday and exactly what he said a couple of months ago. marcus and cierra, it's hard to take bitcoin seriously as a currency when one tweet from one person can move the value of that currency and the tweet said absolutely nothing new. he restated tesla policy. everybody seems to be abuzz about it. >> seemed fluid for me. wishy-washy. >> just give me a dolla. >> increasing inflation about 5%, $1, yes. >> thank you. new this morning, mark zuckerberg is talking more

about the positive side of working from home. he says he'll be logging on at home for six months over the next year. the facebook founder says the pandemic left him to spend more time with his family making him happier and more productive and giving more facebook employees the option to keep working remotely. in a memo, zuckerberg said anyone whose role can be done remotely can request remote work. facebook plans to open an its offices at full capacity in october. a new photo app taking over social feeds, voila uses artificial intelligence to turn your photo into a 3-d cartoon version. select a photo or take one yourself and choose another photo. it takes a few seconds to do, waiting before it turns your picture into a work of art. voila. our team decided to do it as well. take a look at this. cierra this morning looking so beautiful. i love your smile.

sell the pie to patrons. i love all things ohio but that is one thing i cannot do. that is gross. >> i was cool until i saw the wings. >> for some reason that was the dealbreaker for me, too. >> when they told us about the story this morning, i knew kari was a no, no for you, kari, right? >> absolutely. you got to work with the health department? you know that's not good. i mean, come on. that's gross. all right, let's get -- hopefully that didn't ruin your breakfast. let's talk about a nice day ahead as our highs today reach into the mid-70s for milpitas. a high of 76 degrees there. it will start to heat up for the south county but this is basically what we had over the weekend and that continues today. the seven-day forecast is already up in the bottom of the screen as you look at that and we move toward the east bay, pleasanton reaching 80 degrees. 77 in fremont. we'll see some low 60s near the coast, and redwood city reaching into the mid-70s for today.

we'll feel comfortably warm weather today with mid-60s in san francisco, and low 80s for parts of the north bay, in santa rosa. still pretty breezy here, too. but once the winds calm down, the heat will start to ramp up and for solano county, starting on wednesday, continuing through friday, we will have an excessive heat watch in effect. now, solano county is not the only one that's going to have some high heat. it's going to be all of our inland areas as this high pressure continues to build and we know that that high pressure a lot of times changes our wind direction. we don't get the ocean breeze, and as that air descends, had warms up. let me show you a spot like livermore and our trend over the next seven days, going from the upper 70s, low 80s today, upper 80s tomorrow. 99 on wednesday, and then we'll reach the triple digits on thursday. it's still going to be hot on off, going into the weekend. so our today is actually the coolest day of the week. we better enjoy it, before we have to crank up the air

conditioning and blast it pretty much all week long for a lot of our inland valleys. mike, you've been watching the commute. how is it looking right now? >> sorting out but a little different pattern. we're worried about the state opening up tomorrow with more traffic and i thought that's the case for san jose. we saw an early slowdown that lasted longer and then it kicked in and it just kind of held over the last few minutes. so there you go, 101 sat oakland road again, kind of your usual pattern again, i thought it was going to be a little different for this 6:00 hour, from what i was seeing. keep tracking that. we do see some slowing still southbound 101, heading toward the airport and then just past 380, another pocket of slowing. no crew is registered in the area. the caltrans were cleared early this morning but we see slowing out of the area. early crash north flynn west 580 and caused a huge backup. use byron highway to get around that and get out of vasco road r for folks. if you're wondering why it was a

this morning, tributes are pouring in for legendary actor ned beatty. his manager says that he died of natural causes at his home in los angeles yesterday, surrounded by family and friends. beatty broke into the movies in 1972 "deliverance" playing a friendly vacationer terrorized by backwoods thugs. he went on to have memorable roles networks "suleiman" "all the presidents men" and "nashville." he received one oscar namm nomination, he was part of a popular movie of his time. ned beatty was 83 years old. other celebrities are posting

tributes on social media, oswald.ng seth the highest volume of air traffic has been since last march when travel was brought to an abrupt halt. the surge is causing a summer staffing scramble. tsa is projecting more than 130 of the nation's largest airports will experience staffing shortages this month. the agency is looking to hire 6,000 new officers to handle the summer travel rush with only about half hired so far. nbc bay area responds to a north bay family who felt fedex owed them 300 bucks. >> they sent consumer investigate why are chris chmura and his team a video clip that opened a can of worms for the shipping company. >> good morning.

take to you santa rosa and show you video from the shreve family household in january. a fedex truck backs over a light fixture here. the driver gets out of the van, picks up the toppled light, sticks it in the dirt and then drives off. greg and monica shreve say he broke their light, sent us this photo and a close-up here showing what they say is damage. they filed a claim with fedex, but they say they didn't get a response. so the shreves called us. we asked fedex to take another look. soon after monica and greg got a check for $301.90 so cover a new light and installation. here's what a fedex spokesperson told us "we regret any inconvenience caused by this incident and we worked directly with mr. shreve to resolve the issue." the dmv says it's not okay to hit something with your vehicle and just leave. in fact, it says if you are involved in a vehicle collision, stop. if you don't stop, you may be convicted of a hit-and-run, and could be severely punished.

"today in the bay" continues right now. good monday morning. thanks for making us a part of your morning. i'm marcus washington. >> and i'm cierra johnson, laura garcia is off. a warmup is headed our way. meteorologist kari hall is tracking it all for us. how is it going, good morning? >> good morning. it's going to be a big week of changing for the bay area. it's still going to be nice today with some cool coastal temperatures, and our inland areas a little bit warmer but not anything compared to what we'll see by midweek with highs reaching near 100 degrees and yeah, it's still going to be hot as we head into the weekend. those excessive heat warnings and heat advisories going up across the region. we'll get a closer look at the bay area and what we're expecting, coming up in a few minutes. marcus? >> thank you, kari. >> breaking news overnight on a possible new covid vaccine. the drug company novavax says

vaccine is safe and 100% effective against moderate to severe disease. it adds the vaccine is effective against covid-19 variants. novavax finished phase three trials in the u.s. and mexico. it plans to apply emergency use authorization soon. the novavax vaccine is given in two doses 21 days apart. this comes with a new court ruling that may play a big role in whether or not your employer can require you to have a vaccine. over the weekend, a federal court sided with a texas hospital after employees filed a suit over a covid vaccination policy. that judge ruled that the 117 workers had no case. she also denied a request for a restraining order to block the hospital from suspending vaccinated employees. this morning we are less than 24 hours from the state fully reopening. here is the countdown clock, less than 18 hours. star capacity limits and physical distancing requirements will go away.

california mask mandates will be lifted for fully vaccinated people in most situations. >> but this morning there is a lot of confusion especially when it comes to whether or not you'll need to wear that mask to work. >> "today in the bay's" sharon katsuda is live in downtown walnut creek where employees are still totally uncertain how this will play out. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. cierra and marcus. you feel for the employees. an hour ago none of the cars were here but they're here now because there's a yoga class going on. a lot of movement this morning, a lot of excitement but the yoga instructor tells me she herself doesn't know if her, the people in her class will have to be wearing masks tomorrow. she is still waiting to hear from her company on what will be allowed in her class. california says it will alinegn basically says fully vaccinated people should be able to do things like grocery shop and go to restaurants without masks, but businesses could still ask

you to wear a mask, if you're not vaccinated, the state says you must still wear a mask at businesses. and whether or not you're vaccinated, you still need to wear it when on public transit, at health facilities and schools. for many places you may find out the rules when you get there starting tomorrow. >> everyone should keep a mask handy. we know that 60% of oaklanders are fully vaccinated. 76% have had at least one shot, but that means not everyone is, and it's a way of showing your respect to your server, people that you're around, to remind people that we are not completely out of the woods, but we do want to start spending our money at these local businesses. >> reporter: cal osha are expected to vote thursday to drop virtually all mask requirements for fully vaccinated employees and so you can see why employees are a bit

confused because this vote comes two days after the state reopens. so the main message this morning is still bring a mask with you as the state reopens tomorrow. back to you. >> some good advice there, sharon. these roles are confusing for many businesses, everyone is excited to fully reopen and checking for vaccinated and unvaccinated customers. what is the state health leaders, what are they saying about that? >> reporter: cierra, they say businesses basically have three options and the first option would be to have the customer self-attest so trust they're vaccinated as they say they are. the second option to have a verification app to check to see if certain customers are vaccinated, or businesses can still ask customers to please wear your masks at all times, and that would be like how it is right now, as the state reopens. it's going to be interesting to see how the businesses and the customers react to all the changes, starting tomorrow. >> all right, sounds good.

and just as more states prepare to reopen, the u.s. is hovering on the brink of surpassing 600,000 deaths from covid. in california, the positivity rate is dropping, compared to one year ago. last april it was at 11%, at the end of the year on december 31st, the positivity rate rose to 17%, the highest it got. right now at 0.8%, the lowest it's been since the start of the pandemic. there's a lot happening this week, we get you through it all. head over to our website nbcbayarea.com and click on june 15th what to know in our trending bar from mask rules to what's happening in your county. we break it down for you there. a follow-up out of las vegas people touched by the recent death of 7-year-old liam husted gathered in a park yesterday. authorities say his mother killed him on a hiking trail in southern nevada desert last month after abruptly leaving their san jose home. several moms who gathered say

they can't believe what happened. >> as a mom, it strikes every chord in my body. >> it resonated with me very deeply that i have not been able to sleep for multiple weeks. >> those images really got to me. >> tears your heart out. >> liam's mother, samantha moreno rodriguez, is still awaiting extradition to las vegas after authorities captured her in colorado. two homes are destroyed and one firefighter injured from a wildfire in southern california. this started a little before noon yesterday in san bernardino national forest, about 30 miles south of palm springs. evacuation orders are in effect for pinion pines and alpine village and part of highway 74 is also closed. the flames damaged at least three more homes. it's not really clear what kind of injuries that firefighter suffered, as of last check the fires burned at least 400 acres and is 10% contained. 6:37, time to get a look at the forecast for you. meteorologist kari hall looking at that and we're starting off

pretty cool there especially in san francisco this morning, some drizzle as well. >> yes, you can see the fog that we're getting over the golden gate bridge right now. it's keeping it cool there, and this would be the case throughout much of the week. so even stepping out the door in oakland, we have those clouds overhead but temperatures feel a little bit milder, in the low 60s today and a slow warmup as we enjoy some comfortable weather today, reaching 70, but we'll see some mid 80s for some of our north bay as well as inland east bay spots and even down to the south county. we'll talk about that midweek warmup coming up in a few minutes. mike, how is it looking for the commute? >> i can do this, thank goodness, right about a weird pattern going on. it's northbound 101, slowing would likely caused by a crash at oakland road. we talked about the slowing being focused, in the middle lane, why there's more growing traffic back to about story road now from north 101, that may ripple traffic over toward north 280 and cutting over on capital

recover a bit. typical slowing for the virk tri-valley and recovery 24 cooled the caldecott tunnel. let's see what popped up in walnut creek. as travel increases across the country, new problem is emering the number of unruly passengers on planes is skyrocketing. here is nbc's tom costello with the new action being taken by the faa. >> reporter: good morning. so we have seen a post-pandemic high of surge of travelers friday, nearly 2 million people on friday and with that surge in passengers we've also seen a surge in bad behavior that we've been reporting on for weeks and the most recent incident occurred on friday when a flight from l.a. to atlanta had to be diverted to oklahoma city, because a passenger on board, according to delta airlines an off-duty flight attendant began behaving erratically and tried to grab the p.a. system and then the captain himself got on and asked for all able-bodied men to help detain and restrain this

passenger at the front of the plane and they did that and then they diverted to oklahoma city, air traffic control telling other planes in the air that they had an inbound emergency. the bottom line we've seen according to the faa nearly 3,000 reports of unruly or bad behavior since the start of the year, just an unprecedented surge in bad behavior according to the faa. some people are being fined 10,000, 17,000, $20,000 and more and banned for life by the airlines for behaving badly. you can also be put in jail. the faa says a big reason for this is because people are simply upset about and don't want to wear the masks. the masks are still required on board planes and in airports, why? because half the population isn't vaccinated, including children under the age of 12, so the faa trying to protect all of those passengers and some people simply don't want to supply. the faa says if anybody

walnut creek, while oakland today tops out at 70 degrees. some mid-60s for daly city and 75 for redwood city. san francisco reaching 66 in the mission district and our north bay highs reaching 80 in santa rosa. so let's talk about what's ahead after some nice weather today and tomorrow. then we start to see those excessive heat watches going up for solano county, most of the really big heat will be for the central valley but we're going to feel it here for our inland areas. i'll stop it here, 3:00 on wednesday, and we're seeing some low 90s in napa, mid-90s for santa rosa and into the tri-valley as well. we'll see some mid-90s in livermore. gets even hotter on thursday, this is when the heat peaks and we could see the triple-digit temperatures for parts of the north bay, down to the south bay as well as the north bay. so this is for our inland forecast. even once we get past the triple digits it's still going to be hot this weekend but san

authorities say that she died when the driver suddenly threw a parked truck into reverse. the driver is now in custody. happening now, at least two homes are destroyed and one firefighter is injured from a wildfire in southern california. it started a little before noon yesterday in san bernardino national forest, just about 30 miles south of palm springs. evacuation orders are in effect in pinion pines and alpine village and part of highway 74 is closed. the flames damaged at least three more homes. it's not really clear what kind of injuries that firefighter suffered, as of last check the fires burned at least 400 acres and was 10% contained. here we go on this monday morning, as we get ready for the work week. meteorologist kari hall has been monitoring that and take a live look for us here in san jose, as you can see, those conditions still dry, coming off of a good weekend, kari and going to be nice this week and we'll get hot which is the fire danger we're worried about. >> right, any time that we are going to have hot temperatures,

we're also going to have the fire danger, due to the dry vegetation we've seen and the excessive drought, exceptional drought that we've had, we're going to see our highs today reaching near 80 degrees, still fairly nice today, mid 80s for tomorrow and then look at what happens on wednesday, we have some triple-digit temperatures that will continue into thursday, and it's still going to be hot this weekend. doesn't look like we'll see those kind of temperatures in san francisco, but it will be warm with some mid-70s for the middle of the week. mike, how is it looking right now for the commute? >> kari, the south bay is where there is extra slowing 101 north recovers from the earlier crash at oakland road. we talked about the possibility of that rippling around. north 87 shows more slowing than we see coming off capitol expressway. the last couple of weeks the south bay more traffic. the state reopening tomorrow we'll see some different patterns develop. over here we're just now seeing traffic driving slower over half hour through concord into walnut
