temperatures for today. i wanted to show you how quickly it's going to warm up in a spot like dublin. we're starting out nice and cool, upper 50s but look at the trend as we go throughout the morning, at 11:00 we're already in the mid 80s and reaching 90 degrees at noon. 11:00 is when that excessive heat warning goes into effect for parts of the tri-valley as well as the north bay, solano county and the areas shaded in pink, this is where we will see triple-digit temperatures possible today. heat advisories where we'll see some 90s this afternoon and you will need to make sure that you are listening to how your body is feeling and also taking care of yourself in this heat. we're going to see a high of 98 in livermore today. 95 in morgan hill and santa rosa reaching 96, even hotter tomorrow, we'll talk more about that and our fire danger coming up in a few minutes. tarting tomorrow, people in santa clara county willaccess t several locations will open from

"today in the bay's" susan maginnis is live in washington to update us on that. susan? >> good morning. just after 2:00 p.m. in geneva, the two leaders are inside the villa where talks are happening and they are under way, supposed to last about four to five hours but we shall see how things go throughout the afternoon. some of the items on the agenda,

these two leaders are expected to discuss nuclear arms and election interference and recent ransomware the attacks the united states blames on russia. not expected to be a lot of progress in those areas as russia denies a lot of that. for putin the stakes are especially low because the summit was not his idea, it was president biden's idea. from what we're hearing all he needs to do is show up experts say and it is a win for him but the u.s. president, president biden optimistic but armed with a warning the u.s. will respond if russian aggression continues. marcus? >> interesting to see how each of the presidents spins the meeting since they're not doing the joint press conference afterwards. thank you, susan. in the late night vote, the san jose city council approved new gun measures, measures in the works well before the recent vta shooting ram age. >> reporter: good morning, cierra. the proposed measures stem from 2019 after the gilroy mass shooting. >> jones row abouter toe. >> aye. >> reporter: the measures proposed in 2019 resurfaced after the vta massacre. it requires retail gun sellers to record video and audio of all firearm and ammunition transactions. the goal is to deter so-called straw purchases in which a gun buyer has someone else enter the store and pay for the weapon. the new law also bans the sale of firearms and ammunition from a home within the city limits. mayor sam liccardo reminded the public these measures have been considered for quite some time. >> it was focused on narrowing the flow of guns to those which are clearly legal and hopefully

doing something to deter the flow of guns that should not be as well, they're unlawful to own, that is the person to not legally entitled to own guns because of prior convictions or other reasons. >> reporter: and gunadvocates say the measures violate the rights of gun owners. reporting live in san jose, i'm sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." >> sharon, thank you. when it comes to making it in the bay, san francisco is still falling short in his plan to introduce new granny units. the city wants to create 1,500 new granny units but so far they're a third of the way there. part of the reason pushback from tenants. creating new units takes away storage, parking spaces and laundry rooms. the rent control require landlords to pay tenants for services taken away. states leaders approved a federal water release plan some

fear may jeopardize future salmon runs so "the chronicle" reports the plan involves water flows from lake shasta into sacramento river, because that water would be released earlier in the season, computer models suggest that river may be lower and warmer when salmon run during spawning season. water leaders admit there may be increased risk of extinction. nbc news is taking an in-depth look at the vulnerability surrounding the security of america's drinking water. >> the federal cyber security agency says at least half of americans water utilities are facing critical or high. jacob ward is here in california with more. >> reporter: good morning, you guys. back in 1930s, when reservoir systems were first constructed, the engineers at that time could never have imagined that they would be remotely controlling their systems via the internet, much less the criminal organizations might be able to strike those systems from across

the world. the question is how we as a nation are going to safeguard our water. 5:06, time to look at the forecast. kari we've been talking about the heat across the bay. people need to get prepared and have water available and listen to your body, pay attention to what it's telling you. >> definitely, heat exhaustion and heatstroke and hypothermia are things we have to watch out for as we go into the next couple of days. we are starting out cool and it won't be this cool tomorrow unfortunately. we see our trend way up early into the afternoon, by 3:00 we're seeing 90s, upper 90s in spots and once again temperatures coming down slightly before it heats up even hotter for tomorrow. we'll talk about what's ahead in the weekend in a few minutes.

we're going to have some hot weather and you do need to plan your day around the heat. let me show you walnut creek, if you're getting outside, jogging or you have some yard work to do, any outdoor activity, look at the temperature trend. we're starting out with upper 50s. you can see how quickly it warms up, by 10:00 upper 70s and then in the upper 80s by lunch time. we are headed here into the upper 90s for this afternoon. we'll see a high of 101 in fairfield today. livermore reaching 98 degrees. san jose looking at a high of 90 degrees, and palo alto 89. in santa rosa, we're reaching 96 degrees and 74 in san francisco. so it's going to be warmer today. our seven-day forecast shows that for napa, we are going to see highs peaking over 100 degrees tomorrow. it's still going to be hot this weekend, and if you're making plans, even though we're not talking about triple digits, it's still not going to be the best weather for spending long

periods of time outside. as we look at our seven-day forecast for a lot of our inland valleys, some spots will peak at 106 degrees, where we will see excessive heat warnings going up and then it's still going to be in the triple digits for friday. weekend outdoor plans 90s, but then look at what's happening for early next week some significant cooling headed our way, upper 70s and low 80s for san francisco. we have mid-70s in the forecast. here is where we can find some natural air conditioning even though it's still going to feel warm in the city, that's nothing compared to what we'll see in the valleys. next week we'll see some highs in the upper 60s so we will be cooling off after a spike in these temperatures. mike, heading out the door this morning, it's not quite warm yet but you have the ac blasting later today. >> so if you're fortunate to have that in the car that's great. not everybody has it in the house. we have the cooling centers cierra talked about and movie theaters reopening.

harry weinstein is headed back tole kaical, at yesterday's hearing a judge denied his request to deny extradition and ordered him sent back to l.a. immediately. the 69-year-old disgraced hollywood mogul was convicted last spring of criminal sex acts and third-degree rape. los angeles prosecutors want to bring him to california so he can be tried on charges of assaulting five women in los angeles and beverly hills from 2004 to 2013. weinstein maintains his innocence and contends that any sexual activity was consensual. a follow-up this morning, southwest is canceling another 500 flights as it struggles with connectivity issue. those include flights out of several california airports, the new round of problems come after the airline grounded flights on monday for a separate issue. the airlines third party weather program experienced coast to coast issues as well which have

"today in the bay" continues right now. good morning, and thank you for joining us. i'm cierra johnson in for laura garcia. >> and i'm marcus washington. we're going to check in with traffic in just a minute but first, we have to talk about that heat expected to really ramp up across the bay area. we have team coverage for you this morning on our microclimate weather alert. "today in the bay's" thom jensen is tracking the lingering fire danger but first, we want to turn to meteorologist kari hall. when can we expect the heat to move in? >> it's going to be moving in starting with our heat advisory at 11:00, temperatures are going to heat up quickly today, starting out with a clear morning over the south bay and also seeing that near the coast. this is where we have heat advisories, areas shaded in orange and highs reach into the 90s here where we see the pink it will be hotter and we could see triple digit ngs some spots. it's going to ramp up today but

the peak of the heat will be tomorrow reaching 102 in antioch. mid-90s for much of the north bay but a bigger concern as well with the heat is the fire danger and this is what you see as you go out hiking at some of the parks it shows you the fire burn index for today at a high level today and higher tomorrow as we look at how dry the vegetation is, a major concern as the hot temperatures continue and we're watching that more coming up in the next microclimate forecast. >> thank you, kari. along with the extreme heat in the forecast for days ahead comes the greater fire danger. firefighters in the north bay have their hands full putting out a grass fire that damaged at least two homes. >> "today in the bay's" thom jensen is live in the vallejo neighborhood just off of i-80 near the redwood parkway. thom, firefighters are they

still there? >> they are still here. two firefighters from vallejo fire department on the scene. this is one of six homes damaged and this is one of two that sustained the most damage. as we look in the doorway some of the damage the fire started in the back up into the front of the house. this was a fast-moving fire first reported about 5:35 last night and by 6:30, 15 to 20 homes in this immediate area here on skyline drive where we are and also two courts that are adjacent to this were evacuated. other homes in the area people were asked to shelter in place. meanwhile, homeowners were trying to do what they could with their garden hoses and firefighters were trying to stop this before it spread to more homes. >> we had 15 to 20 homes threatened and we had ember casting in the houses off of silver view and we had a few

backyards and porches catch fire as well. >> my mom's in the house with two other dogs >> we're expecting hot weather over the next two days. there's still a lot of brush down there. >> reporter: there was one person treated at a local hospital for smoke inhalation. no other people were injured in this fire, all of the evacuees were allowed to return home last night at about 9:00, all allowed to return home except for the two homes that sustained the most damage. evacuees could soon be asked because of this heat that's just ahead to start conserving power. the electric grid folks, people who manage it could ask people very soon because of the triple digits coming inland to start conserving power in the late afternoon, 4:00 to 9:00, set thermostats up to 78 degrees. so that could happen to try to

mental health counselors. according to "the chronicle" the counselors who are both jewish were included in an anti racism program with other white employees. during one session they claim the group ignored an incident involving swastikas despite objections which they believe amounted to religious bias. the two have since filed a complaint to state and federal civil rights agencies saying the program created a hostile work environment for jewish staff members. stanford is investigating the complaint and told "the chronicle" is forcefully rejects anti semitism in all forms. new this morning the details in the public battle supervisor's public battle with alcohol. he spoke yesterday apologizing for previous behavior as he seeks treatment. >> i owe you all a sincere apology. this is not how i hope to come out of this pandemic, but with or without alcohol, with or without stress, i am accountable for my behavior and i am profoundly sorry for and frankly

embarrassed by the tenor that i have struck at times in my work. >> supervisor peskin will continue to serve his role on the board while in treatment. other supervisors expressed their support for peskin as he gets help. happening today, reverend jesse jackson is coming to the bay area. he's partnering with the interfaith community and activists to promote solidarity between the african-american community and aapi community. today he will hold a press conference at the chinese cultural center in san francisco to commemorate the 39th anniversary of the murder of vincent chen, and to condemn the recent attacks on asian-americans. chen was killed by two white autoworkers while celebrating their friends at his bachelor party in detroit, michigan. the press conference starts at 11:00 a.m. alameda county supervisors plan to do more research on a proposed $1 billion new ball park at howard terminal.

a marathon meeting yesterday lasted several hours, as the future of the a's was front and center. the board plans will discuss this ball park plan again in august. on the field at the coliseum, the a's last night continued to roll. a sean murphy home run on the bottom of the eighth capped off the a's scoring, they won the game 6-4 to notch their fifth straight victory. oakland activists believe more needs to be done to help those most in need. the alliance of californians for community empowerment want to stage what they're calling an oakland budget tour. the idea is to convince leaders to invest more in struggling neighborhoods and redirect police department funding. several councilmembers have been invited to attend this meeting. a recently renovated commercial building and a prime south bay location reportedly just sold for nearly $18 million.

according to "the mercury news" the building is located between valley fair mall and santana row and steven's creek boulevard in san jose. the two-story building houses a verizon store on the bottom floor enat the other office space above. as we've mentioned all morning, it is going to be a warm one. listen to your body, drink water, do what you can to stay cool. meteorologist kari hall talks about what we can exactly see. >> you can't do it. you can't say it. >> air conditioning. >> yes, and if you don't have air conditioning, you want to make sure you call a friend, maybe somebody you haven't seen since the pandemic began. go ahead and hang out with them, find someplace where you can get some air conditioning. let me show you what we're expecting, because even though it's nice and cool now, the trend goes straight up for today, as it will heat up even hotter than yesterday. so even by late morning, we're feeling some upper 70s/low 80s and we're headed for the 90s

there. now along the coastline, this is where we will have some much cooler temperatures, staying mostly in the 60s for today, but there will be a wide range in temperatures, even though there will be 60s near the coast, for our inland areas, it's going to be almost 40 degrees hotter in some of those spots especially tomorrow, more widespread triple digits. we'll talk more about that in a few minutes. mike, what's going on with the morning commute? >> having a heat wave is like winning the lottery, everybody comes out of the woodwork. a note for the north bay a crash, major damage reported for the suv but no major injuries. i'm tracking that information closely. south 101 is jammed up in petaluma right now. petaluma boulevard gets you around the east washington street, the location for that crash blocking two of your three lanes. this is 116 so it's just before you get to highway 116, coming southbound. over here the earlier crash 101 at cesar chavez we heard possibly a pedestrian was involved. no slowing i'll sayll

it turns out even the honors for bravery during the capital siege are politicized more than five months after the january 6th riot, house lawmakers agreed to award the congressional gold medal to first responders. 21 republicans voted against the legislation. none are from california. the senate is debating a similar bill. and new this morning, the latest twist is any indication don't expect a special recall election to take place before mid-september. that's because county election offices this week asked the lieutenant governor to wait that long in large part because the print ballots may not be ready before then. the recall question deciding governor newsom's fate appear on the ballot. because the contest is not certified it's not clear how many replacement candidates will be listed or how much paper will be required. giants fans celebrating not just baseball but maybe some newfound freedom. last night at oracle park, california's full reopening meant fans had the option to go

biden at this very minute meeting with russia's vladimir putin. >> and scott mcgrew, putin has met with sometimes gotten the best of u.s. presidents. >> putin's been in power since bill clinton was president so dealing with him as been a battle for five different presidents. the american and russian president started their meeting in geneva moments ago. putin and his cadre accused of poisoning political opponents, harboring cyber criminals, invading ukraine and of course interfering with the american elections at least twice. a live picture outside the hotel which they're meeting. we'll keep an eye on the scene bringing you updates with special reports. president biden has not said much about his planned strategy but it's reasonable to guess he will be talking with putin about things like election interference but not too tough. the ideal situation for biden

would be for putin to not be that much of an issue during his presidency so he can concentrate on the problems at the border, passing new bills. putin knows that's what biden wants. past presidents have tried to find that balance with putin, who remember is a former kgb officer, in russian intelligence. he used all kinds of maneuvers to stay in power in a country that is at least on paper democratic. president george w. bush says he was able to see into putin's soul. one of the most notable thing president trump ever said in a presidency full of notable things was that he trusted putin more than he trusted his own intelligence agencies during this summit in 2018. trump doubled down with that just the other day in a written statement. john mccain at the time called it the most disgraceful thing a president has ever done. president obama and putin with a staredown in 2013.

area, kari. >> yes, absolutely especially when you ramp up the temperatures and usually water is how we stay cool but really not recommended to turn on sprinklers or anything like that, that could waste our water but as we take a live look outside in mt. diablo looking over the tri-valley, as the sun rises this morning, we know it's going to be a hot day. so let's talk about taking care of yourself in this heat, make sure you're staying hydrated, drinking lots of water even if you don't feel thirsty and set your thermostat to 78 degrees. we don't want to put a strain on the power grid. use cooling centers like libraries, malls or if the city has cooling centers open and also beware of the dangers of being in a hot car. never leave your children or pets inside of a vehicle, not even for a little bit. check on children and the elderly, especially if they don't have air conditioning or the kids are outside playing and

also care for people if you provide a bottle of water or give shelter that's needed during the hot temperatures. inside a vehicle, these temperatures get so hot, and you may not realize it, even to 70 degrees, it could be 90 degrees inside of a vehicle within a few minutes and then you look at how the temperature goes up, and how the temperature inside of a car can go up, from 80 degrees, it could be 123 degrees over the course of an hour, but when you think it's 90 degrees, it could be over 133 degrees inside of a vehicle. we're going to see these hot temperatures starting today, as our highs reach into the mid-90s in the north bay, some triple digits for the far inland east bay, from fairfield as well as antioch and over the next several days we could be as hot as 108 degrees in livermore, starting tomorrow, continuing into the weekend, as we could see the hot weather into at least the weekend but much cooler early next week. mike, what's the breaking

welcome back. 5:56. you're watching "today in the bay." we want to tell you developing now the race to protect the river from runoff after monday's chemical plant fire in northern illinois. the focus has been to try to safeguard rockton's drinking water supply. this comes from the rock river. thick black smoke this hung over the village there as trenches were dug to help block the residue from leaking into that water. the cause of this fire is under investigation. >> now to a follow-up, southwest airlines is canceling another 500 flights including ones in california cities, as it struggles with connectivity issues. this new round of problems comes after the airline grounded flights on monday for a separate
